Hi, I acquired a used polaris touch cruise 1 and nand flashed to RLS10.
I am wondering what performance this device has with modern apps. I had issues to run youtube videos and flash. I also tried to run sipdroid (sip phone app) and it stucked with sound or completely crashed. Is there a chance in terms of performance do get this apps running?

The YouTube app suffers from a known problem that we hope it would be fixed.*
For VoIP you can use a great application that really works: Nimbuzz. It can make call using Skype accounts and Windows Live Messenger accounts. Be sure to check it out.
And... welcome!! Polaris is still a quite good device.
Yepp, I second that.
I find Froyo a little to much for my old Polaris. It really anoys me the lack of Flash support in the browser. Even with Skyfire I can't get it requires a lot of resources. One thing I must say, I enjoy Android more then Win Mo that's for sure.
The best ROM so far for me is Valilla Eclair. Fast with very good battery life.
I agree with alinescoo, the new Android ROMs (e.g. froyo) are too heavy for Polaris.... Not a bad thing though, but as long as you know the limitations u can be a happy user.
Ive had my Pola100 for almost 2.5 years now, and the reason I moved from WinMo to Android is cause its much much faster, stable and cause Im looking forward to finally buy a new phone. And Android is defintely the OS to go for...
I guess the answer to ur question depends on whether u wanna use ur Polaris as a stable everyday phone or u wanna try everything u can on it...
Cheers
Oh btw, Im using Incubus Super Froyo RLS13 with Liqu1d's 16/07 nbh. Very fast and quite stable...
Hope it helps
Hi,
We have been working on this app, is my fourth android app.
The aplication searchs over internet for tv-shows links capables to be played directly on your device, with full screen support using megavideo, frogmovz, karambavidz and other hosting services. The search resoult are shown in a intuitive and easy to use interface.
EDIT: This application is not available anymore.
Samsung galaxy vibrant user here:
Using Nerov3+voodoo
on wifi
While the interface of the app was very easy to navigate. Non of the the videos I tried to play from the few websites I selected would play. I picked monk and the x-files. I also tried multiples of the sources.
It basically opens a webpage and ask you to verify that you are human. Nothing happens for "me" beyond that.
Vibrant user..nerov3..no voodoo Dexter works fine !!
Will this ever support HDMI out for the EVO?
Try megavideo servers first
The best integration is when megavideo is used as stream server, it goes directly to full screen.
I have been watching X Files and Dexter without any problem on my HTC Desire.
Sounds Great I'm in
I purchased the full version. So far so good
I have not had any problems loading videos on the Droid Incredible. However, there seems to be a delay on the sound by about a second or two.
I downloaded the lite version and experienced it both on Prison Break and Lost.
Excellent so far when I use megavideo streams. Awesome that its got its always sunny - thats not even on netflix streaming!.
watching dexter on my nexus one running MircoMod777 Gingerbread V.19
havent tried any others yet but im sure most if not all work, theres alot of sources to choose from so dont start crying if the first one doesnt load up right away, its the lite version, deal with it
Can you add Fringe?
I m a fan.
Beauty! I bought the full version right away. Great app.
same here, great app but would like to suggest maybe an integration with tv show favs app, maybe. I see the bookmarks app which is good, also how often will these be update, are we looking at 30 mins after show aired?

same with me full version on EVO cm7rc0. I will try fresh ROM later.
Hi,
This app has not been tested with custom ROMs. If you experience problems try uninstalling the rom flash player and install flash player from the market before changing your ROM.
so far so good.....most likely will upgrade soon...........great work..........
AWESOME
Bought it right away. And I never buy apps haha

that worked,
thanks for the great app
works flawlessly with cynagen only problem is that still no 4g only in alpha stage when done, it will be amazing, try to see if it will work on my nook.
Running Rod's latest MIUIMOD rom on my N1(running on base 12.31). I didn't even screw with the lite app, I went to the jugular and bought the app.
Watch a few mins of a show and works great! Thanks for the app!
Works fine on my Droid X. It's running Rubix 1.9.5.
Hey
The first (Android) smartphone with camera that can really compete with the digital cameras and no section for it?
Modding it would be great
Altek A14 Leo
Altek Leo Section
regarding the serious problems the Altek Leo has, as no google apps, not even market, no rooting published, no adobe flash, firefox will not install and so on,
a section would be useful for the distessed owners of this camera phone which
is more a fumble phone than a smart phone. Its advantages are a very good lens, an outstanding CCD chip, a xenon flash and professional camera software.
True, is buggy
I bought one actually and despite it being pretty buggy, I just absolutely love the camera.
Definitely needs some software love though:
1) Interface is pretty sluggish and 2.1 isn't helping, the latest android performance improvements would be nice.
2) Touch-screen is strangely inaccurate. Swype was a must for me.
3) Battery life is pretty bad (not certain how much a newer Android would help, but any amount of powersaving fixes would help).
4) Buttons/widgets to lock the screen (e.g. Extended Controls) don't work.
5) The camera button doesn't open the camera when the phone is locked (debatable I guess, but imo, the camera button should just open the camera, period).
6) Default alarm clock doesn't ring randomly.
7) Not to mention apps randomly crashing, strange animation bugs in the Album viewer, no google apps, terrible GPS, etc.
But despite those, I've managed to work my way round them and am in love with it.
Alex
I have one of these and I do like the quirkyness .
I would love to improve the experience by modding.
Quirkyness fits well
To continue the list (more than enough for a forum)
- Backups by Titanium, AVG or Nandroid do not work because i have no idea
how to root the Altek Leo.
- WLAN range is still very short and does not always an automatic reconnect.
- I could not manage to make any browser play flash files, but the moboplayer
plays flv files well.
- Apps like soundhound say the microphone is blocked.
About half of the apps i need are not available because they will not install
or they are exclusively available over google market and getting them from
file hosters seems a bit risky to me. Most of this problems seem to be caused
by the small software space of 120 MB for files and 83 MB for running
applications.
But i will keep the Altek Leo and use it because the camera prooved itself
as outstanding among mobile phones.
- I use the application stores Applanet, Amazone Appstore, Handango,
SlideMe SAM and the tools Memory Booster Lite, Android Tweak.
Does anyone discovered any other useful helpers for this half of an
ANDROID device ?
"We do not need any adobe flash, we have got a real xenon flash."
Where To Buy
Does anyone know where to pick up/order one of these units?
Here To Buy
Search at Ebay, you will need a Paypal account.
I bought mine from Wifigadget.
Eason of Yupitek provides International Customer Service,
have a look at the facebook pinwall.
Thanks for the tips! Really like Memory Booster and Swype.
If you're on a mac, the "missing sync" from markspace is well worth the buy - particularly given that there does not seem to be a way to add a Google account under accounts and sync - it's missing on my altek leo! Anyone elses too?
Also recommend "Lookout" if you're worried about virus from no easy way to get apks other than file sharing sites.
Despite the quirks, very happy with this all-in-one device - music player + phone + camera - 3 down to 1! Fantastic!
Vignette
Sidenote, 'Vignette' is the perfect app for this device.
It doesn't fix any of the quirkiness, but it's a photo manipulation tool which complements the fantastic camera perfectly.
You can take your pics and then touch them up making the phone a studio for all things photography.
You can purchase it from the AndAppStore.
By poor battery life, how many days do you get out of it?
root and market
Has anyone tried the Gingerbreak exploit? I heard it might work on older devices. Also, if you don't trust file sharing sites and want stuff from the market. You could try running an emulator and installing the Market on that, then sideloading the APKs. I haven't tried it myself yet, but it seems there are a lot of people doing this. Here's one HOWTO which is specific to Mac but I think it's prety much the same or at least you should be able to use the same system image. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1387830/how-to-install-android-market-app-on-the-emulator there are lots of other links if you google "android market emulator" I don't have the Leo yet because they're sold out in Taiwan, but I've got mine on order. I'm most interested whether the google apps work at all if they're sideloaded. I've just sort of bricked my older Cyanogen device. Any feedback would be appreciated.
Oh, here's a Windows specific link - http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/10004/accessing-android-market-from-android-sdk/
and be careful with Gingerbreak!
There's also UniversalAndRoot to try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=747598
and SuperOneClick http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
Poor battery-life
@rocky7st
It depends on usage. Light usage is ok. Any sort of medium/heavy usage won't get you through the day.
I bought it from an ebay seller which sent me 2 batteries which was helpful:
cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230614421067
It's is useful since it allows me to occasionally geek out with the camera, playing with apps or using the GPS (i.e. 2 hours straight) and and it'll completely run out of juice by late afternoon.
I usually wait till I get home to recharge it on those occasions, but it's been very useful to be able to switch to the backup battery if I'm out and about and I really need to use the phone.
@everyone_else
On the topic of side-loading apps, my gf has an Android phone with a market on it, so I use the "Astro" file manager which allows you to "Backup" the apks, and then I transfer them to my phone via email.
I've been unable to get my device to show up with adb, so not far enough to try SuperOneClick.
UniversalAndRoot says something like "unable to root"
Z4Root says "running root exploit" and does not progress..
That's bad news but good to know at the same time. Hopefully there will be a method soon. Still waiting on mine but I unbricked my older one. Seems to be an almost total lack of hands-on reviews (outside of a trade show) so I thought someone might be interested in this one. Also, I emailed the author to see whether and how he installed the Market app.

Cheers for the reply jackflap. Do you guys know anything about the Android 2.2 upgrade, I've heard Altek is meant to be releasing it next month.
Okay, I got SuperOneClick working so I have root. ADB worked in windows after installing the Altek software.
ADB in linux still cannot find the phone..
So I tried installing various vending.apk files but keep getting MISSING SHARED LIBRARY or out of date SDK.
@daktak I've been trying to develop for the Leo but have not been able to get ADB to work in windows. Where did you obtain the Altek software?
Hi All,
I am a complete noob here and non technical.
Recently bought an altek leo with the sole purpose of loading an app called Passport Photo Plus and using the device to create passport photopgraphs and to send by Bluetooth to a compatible printer.
We have been doing this on other android smartphones but wanted to use the altek due to its camera features.
It appears that our desired app is ony avaiable on Market.
Being non -technical we have tried and failed to find a way to install this app on our leo.
I'm sure there may be other apps available but we specifically want this one due to it's features.
Does anybody know if this can be done, and if so how? Can anybody point me in the right direction (in easy to understand non tech terms please!)
Would happily pay a small fee for succesful step by step instructions (not sure if I can post that here, if not please ignore / mods pls delete).
Many thanks in advance.
Apparently this feature is acting up on other devices but was wondering if anyone had this working on their G2x and if so how did you manage to get it working?

What sort of issues are you having, and what ROM are you using? I had some issues with bluetooth and tts with CM7. I've switched over to EB 2.3.3, and all is working well.
Make sure you have everything you need installed.
Go to settings/voice input & output/text-to-speech settings/
If "Install voice data" isn't grayed out, click on that...it will take you to the market to download the voice engine.
I haven't noticed any problems with my tts, running my current ROM, but I also don't use Pico. I use Svox. It cost around $2-3 for the voice download, but it's much nicer than Pico.
Good Luck.
I'm running stock GB 2.3.3
I was hoping it would read text as they came in similar to the new WP7 Mango update but apparently the framework doesn't support that yet.
It takes me to the market, i download the application but then it uninstalls itself and shows that i have never downloaded the application before. I might install Faux123 rom and see if i can get it to work.

What app are you trying to d/l? I've never really tested out text message readers. I know Handcent will read the text, but IDK if you can set it to read as they come in.
I did test out Vlingo way back, and I must say...it was pretty good. I just don't like that it requires data usage (I'm on a limited data plan). But, for reading texts, Vlingo was pretty awesome. It even understood things like LOL (rather than say L-O-L, it would read it as "laughing out loud"). It even translated WTF, which of course made me laugh like a 12yr old kid.
I'm not downloading any. I was hoping the stock messaging application would do this as i kind of like the layout but sucks as far as security is concerned but that is an android thing.
I'll give the Vlingo a try and see if it works.
Thanks for the help.
If you are running a teamdrh rom with JB, or ICS with the 2.6.39 kernel, you can use a webcam and this hack to make skype video calls or take pictures/ record video with the stock camera app. I have tested this and it works great, skype calls are getting video and audio but i have only done a couple of five minute calls so I do not know if you will have the same luck with the MIC that I have had. on the stock camera app, if you "switch" from front to back camera, it inverts the video image, but video recording works, however on the stock app the MIC will cut off at around 10 seconds, but videolooks good, and pictures work too. All other camera apps I downloaded have worked as well.
REquirements:
1) a UVC webcam, which means compatible with Video4linux, or Video4windows, really most webcams work. The easy way if you buy one is to find on the box anything that says "no drivers/cd required." But check here: http://www.ideasonboard.org/uvc/#devices
I bought a $17 gigaware at radioshack, the cheapest one in the store.
2) You need to download this file:
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B4ltl2zYxU7yVTVnM1RzVlBNaUE/edit?pli=1
BUT EXTRACT AND ONLY COPY THE camera.tegra.so FILE INTO your tablet's /SYSTEM/LIB/HW folder, and reboot. If you copy the other stuff you might find that your device will NO LONGER BOOT!!!
3) Plug your webcam into the usb port and in terminal run these commands:
su
chown system.camera /dev/video0
chmod 660 /dev/video0
*If you download gscript you can enter these commands once, and then it is just a couple of clicks, WAY EASIER! they need to be entered everytime you plug the webcam in, and before you run a camera/skype app.
Enjoy, I am hoping some people will test this and confirm it works for them too, please!

There is a possibility that this already works on TeamDRH's ICS rom. The support has been added in the kernel awhile back but never been tested.
Thanks and much credit to rajeevvp!!!! I have gotten a webcam to stream video onto my gtab with DRH 1.3.2
Its kind've choppy, and a little blurry but works in a stable manner.
I am beggining to learn programming for android and trying to figure out a way to have any apps divert to my working video source instead of looking at the factory camera for a source. It seems it should be possible but I am just still too newb to Know any better.
If you would like to test this, then refer to this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29457353&postcount=11
I have had success with a uvc compatibe webcam so far.
If you might have an idea as to how to trick the rom into looking at the usb port for its default video source I would like to know. Or if you can conclusively tell me that this is not possible I would like to know that too. My understanding is that there are two ways to approach this. One is to have the rom divert any frame capture requests to the usb video source as opposed to the original location. The other way, and probably more likely way, is to take an app like skype and hack it to go to usb for video, as opposed to the "stock camera location." Any insights would be very helpful. At least then, we could video chat with a small webcam, as opposed to no camera at all.
If this works for you, hit the thanks button on RAJEEVVP's post.

That binary source code may also work on other ROMs (Froyo-, GB-, or HC-based ones)--if the Android<->HW camera interface hasn't changed. (The binary, unfortunately, doesn't load on GB and HC.)
This is how it should've been done by nVidia in the first place. I had expected them or VS/Malata to write a kernel driver for their camera which implemented the standard V4L interface. Instead, they have a binary-only shared object which directly controls the camera HW in a completely opaque way. There's hardly any camera-support code in the official (2.6.32.x) kernels at all--I was very surprised when I looked into this some time back.
nVidia's HW is nice and all, but, from now on, I'm just not going to buy any more of their products if it relies on any proprietary blobs.

I found out I didn't have a dev/video0 folder. I created one but the camera fcs. Is ther supposed to be files in the video0 folder? I noticed in the audio folder there were several files. I am running DRH ICS 1.3 It didn't have the camera app installed since it didn't work anyway.
Any help would be appreciated. I restored the camera app with Ti from an earlier backup.
Thanks
btw: Thanks to all who got this working. I've been looking for something just like this.
Um, /dev/video0 is only created after you plug in your camera. You do not create this yourself. If your camera is UVC compatible, then after it is plugged in you should have /dev/video0 on the stock rom with no modifications! Did you check the link to see if it is listed?
These terminal commands give the camera permission to use the camera apps, along with the camera.tegra.so file. But, a totally unmodded rom will give /dev/video0 if your camera is compatible, because TEAMDRH already included the needed drivers. download the app "usb host controller" and open it after you plug your camera in. under the USB tab, does it register or list your camera? If so, then google your webcam, not the brand name, but the brand that is listed under "usb host controller" to see if it is UVC. My camera is a Gigaware, but under usb host controller it is listed as an MSI Starcam.
This positively works for me, but I have been waiting for anyone else to tell me it worked for them too so I can confirm. I am happy to help, because I want this to work universally as it should so it is a viable option.
Thanks

It works. I haven't actually taken a pic or video yet, but I got a picture. I'm using my Logitech 270 HD webcam and the picture looks great. This is what I've been waiting for. I downloaded the free version if Camera ICS off the Play store. May have to buy it. The older stck camera app still FCs but the ICS one fired right up. Now I'll have to make my script.
Thanks a great deal... :good::good:
On a fresh install of the JB alpha, if you swipe left on the lockscreen instead of right, the camera app pops up, if you do a factory reset, then it will be in your app drawer!
I am so glad to hear it works for someone else.
TO use video recording or skype video, any video, you have to swap from the front to back camera. It shows an inverted image, but when you play back a recorded video, it is proper, also skype might be inverted but it looks right on the other end. I do not know why this is, but it works!!
***To clear up any confusion, the terminal commands only need to be entered once, after the camera is plugged but before you try to use any camera apps. They do not need to be re-entered until the next time you plug your webcam in, or restart the tab. With the gscript, you can put a shortcut on your homescreen, and the process becomes: plug cam in, tap one button, then load camera app or skype, etc!!
I can confirm it works with ICS Beta 1.3.2 (using the Camera ICS app). Camera, and Skype work just fine!
At last, my gTab is complete again! (well... almost...).

Random newbish question
would this be able to work on other tablets as well? albeit slightly modified and what not... i've been thinking of integrating a dell streak 7 into my dash and an external web cam would be a neat back up cam
Im gonna guess no, but it is possible. YOu need a kernel with V4l2 support, and a file like this to direct the rom to communicate with it. I know nothing about dell streaks, but if you ask a developer of the rom you're using to look at Borkata's github source you might get a solution, but I really do not know.

I've tried this with on a gTablet, testing both G-Harmony & SmoOther Beam 4.1.2, but I haven't been able to get it working.
I'm testing it with a Microsoft HD-6000 webcam. Any suggestions on where I might look to determine if the problem is related to the ROM/approach, or the hardware?
I've already checked the UVC compatibility page. Unfortunately it's a bit out-of-date, and the HD-6000 is not yet listed, yet the sister HD-3000 is listed as supported.
Thank you in advance for any ideas!
