Stay Awake - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

Alright, so I used to have a T-Mobile Samsung Vibrant (3G). The "Stay Awake" (while charging) setting would keep resetting itself to not stay awake while charging. I figured it was a ROM bug or an SD card bug or whatever...
So I just got a new Samsung Galaxy S 4G, I'm using the Audiophile ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1161553), and the "Stay Awake" option still won't stay on. Every single time I restart the option resets itself to not stay awake. Anyone have an idea what's going on or how to fix it?

I'm just curious, why would you want to do that? I'm not a battery expert, but your battery should theoretically charge slower while your screen is on. Aside from probably prolonging charging time, keeping your screen on while your charge might even heat up your phone too.

Unfortunately that would leave the screen on all the time, not just when plugged in.

Mostly for in my car, I have a dock, car charger and audio over radio device. Having to do a passworded unlock to change songs is fairly dangerous while driving.

In the Market, get Caffeine. Works great. No problems.

why is this in the themes/apps section?

I can't speak for radio, but maybe Car Home might work for music.

Powering off at night time?

Hello,
This is my first post on these forums so be nice!
I've had a search and haven't been able to find a specific answer to my query: should I power off my Touch HD at night time like I used to my Nokia phones before this?
Only reason I ask is I know powering off is the same as a soft reset, and as I use HDTweak some things seem to change when I turn off/on. Also, I didn't know if it was better battery life wise to power off and turn on or just leave in standby?
Thanks for your opinions, and thanks for such a great forum!
Owen.
don't matter which of cause not being 100% off mean that it will use batt to still work as a callphone if somebody calls
personally i just connect it to ac power at night being as it's a myth that it's not good
for the lithium ion batts to be charged often that way
I power mine off every night to cool & rest the battery after a busy day on the ppc! I do not loose any settings or have any issues with the battery. cheers
I never turn off mine...
I use phoneweaver to automatically turn off my radios at night. The PPC stays "on" but the phone part is off. Saves a lot of battery and I can still use it as an alarm clock.

Sounds like a good idea, I'm just never too sure whether to trust my phone as an alarm! I left it on over night and the battery stayed at the same &age, whereas turning it off and on seems to drain about 3% each time.
Thanks for the replies.

Turn off your phone? If you do that how do people call you? I'm a minister and my phone is ALWAYS on. It doesn't seem to hurt anything. My batteries don't seem to be affected by always being on. As I'm sitting here at my desk my phone is plugged in, partly to stay charged, and partly to make sure that it is always synced with my computer as changes are made.

The point is that I don't want my phone to be on over night so that people can't text/call me to wake me up. People that I want to know my house number have it

Then vibrate or off sound can be an option and leaving your phone on just to have a record of who call you on the time you don´t want to answer
Thanks for all your post

[Q] Point of irritation, any way to time the screen out after the battery charges?

Does anyone know of a way to get the screen to shut off after the battery recharges? A popup box tells me to unplug the cable and the screen stays on until I hit ok. This irritates me to no end as I always charge my phone at night, so the screen stays on for hours. Any way to disabled the popup box our force the screen to time out?

I was just thinking about this, and I think I will use Tasker to turn off the screen when that happens.

I would also like to know the answer to this. That pop up is irritating in general.
Your screen doesn't turn off after? Mine always has shut off after about 2 seconds.

Same here, mine always turns off after that pop up.
Mine doesnt turn off either its annoying as hell and lights up my entire room. How can you manage this with tasker?

For other reasons, I prefer the option to leave the screen on while it's plugged in. So it doesn't shut back off once the popup happens.
Mine always shuts off after a period too. Do you have the setting on to stay awake when plugged in? Simple solution is to put your phone upside down when going to bed. I have to block LEDs on my computer, and its charger to sleep. My bigger annoyance was the sound it makes. I finally figured out that the System Sound controls that volume.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
There is no solution to this. From what I read, Samsung changed it in Froyo build and put this notification on notification bar instead.
If you don't like it lights up in the middle of night, why you keep the phone wake while plugged in?

This is what I've resorted to as well, it's not perfect, but like you say, its really annoying to have it light up the entire bedroom at night. Fingers crossed its fixed in 2.2 like someone said.
In Settings >> Applications >> Development there's a setting named "Stay awake while charging" or something like that.
Does anyone with this problem, by any chance, have that checked?

Mine doesnt do that. The message pops up that the battery is charged and to disconnect the cable, but my screen doesnt stay on. Every morning when I get up my screen is off. As soon as I hit the power button the screen wakes up and I see the fully charged message is still there so I then hit ok, but my screen is never "On" when I first wake up each morning.

It turned out to be a problem with the AT&T JH7 update for me, actually. The screen would stay on regardless of whether that was checked or not (it actually re-checked itself as soon as I left the menu in JH7). Flashed back to JF6 and all is right with the world again. Thanks for reminding me about that option though, I was beginning to think it was some touchjizz quirk.

No such problem here with JH7.
Strange, I wonder why some people's stay on while some do not. If it were a "Stay awake while charging" option issue, then the phone wouldn't have shut off the screen in the first place when you first insert the cable.
What version of firmware are you guys having this issue using?
I'm on stock. Sometimes I actually miss when it's fully charged for an hour or two because it shuts off the screen after a few seconds.
Why not charge it with it off?

There are various reasons you may not want the screen to automatically turn off while it's charging. I would rather just manually click the power button if it's plugged in. I never rely on it auto sleeping the screen anyway. I just leave it charging overnight while I sleep so it turns on the screen when it's full and doesn't shut off.

Mine was one of the updates that "failed", but said it was running JH7 after reboot anyway. It actually worked well with noticeable improvements in GPS performance; apparently that screen problem was some side effect though. Who knows :\

[Q] My wifi never sleeps when its ON

After I did the OTA update to 2.3.4 on my Tmobile Sensation 4G, I cant seem to get the wifi to ever sleep. It stays on no matter where I am; next to a router, in my car, outside, at home...
Attached is an example of a typical day's usage with some charging, because recently its been draining a lot quicker. I have tried restarting, turning wifi on/off, getting rid of all of the saved wifi networks and saving them again, changing the sleep policy, turning off the best performance wifi feature, pretty much everything. I have also attached todays usage thus far, notice that wifi calling is using battery even though i have it disabled.
I don't use wifi calling, and even though its off, sometimes it shows up under the the battery draining applications. Its not on though, I don't even know why its there.
Anyone else having this issue? Please advise.
Thanks
Wi-Fi Power Fix
First off, Settings>Wireless & networks>Wi-Fi Settings>Menu>Advanced>Wi-Fi sleep policy>Never when plugged in.
After any OTA the phone builds a current index and reorganizes the file system. This can take up to lets say just from personal experience anywhere from 2-8 days depending on how loaded your phone/sd card is. It is always good to plan ahead. Spare battery in pocket, charger at work/car/home. It may seem like I’m being lazy, but it’s more pragmatic than anything. The phone will truly get noticeably zippy at some point when you pick it up and you will remember this post. Have fun with your phone. It’s a great one.
Josh-
i dont really understand what you are talking about in the second part of your post after you mention the suggestion to turn that setting on. How could a setting take 8 days to go into effect? I have been using the phone for more than 2 weeks now with the new OTA.
How did You restart Your phone ? Using "Power off" from Power options ? Sensation doesn't seem to do a real power off in this case. After switching on it will start quite fast (~5s until asking for PIN).
So have You tried "Restart" from Power options or removing the battery ?

That fast rebooting is a feature called fast boot. I turned it off, and it actually restarts the phone and doesn't put into some "hibernation" mode.
So, yes I have done a full reboot as well as a battery pull before starting again.
Still the same problem ? If so, a factory reset may solve it, but You'll loose Your data.
If Your device is rooted You can create a Nandroid backup before and restore it afterwards, if it doesn't solve the problem.

Powered on when plugged into charger/dock = Annoying. Fix?

When my Infinity is plugged into either the power adapter or dock when it's off, it turns on. Very annoying. I'd love to be able to plug it in when it's off to charge it without it coming on. Anyone have a solution to this?
Muchas gracias in advance!!
Mine does this as well, but it does turn off after the cooldown timer set under Settings (in the Display section). I do not believe there is a hack available for preventing the display to turn altogether, alas.

Go to Settings > Developer Options > "Uncheck Stay Awake While Charging".
It took awhile to figure this out. I couldn't understand why my battery was draining so much, once I turned this off I could go a few days without charging.

I don't think that answers his question though. Even when that option isn't checked, the device still powers on automatically when connecting the charger cable. He's trying to stop the device from coming on when connecting the power cable while the device is off...

Only way to get to a state of "being off" and "charging" seems to be to plug it in and then shutdown. I've had this reaction in all of my android devices. If you plug it in first with even if the battery run down so far that the device cannot power on, it still will when there is enough juice in the battery to do so.
I have stay awake while charging unchecked, thanks.
I've seen this in all my Android devices too, was just hoping for some sort of hack to turn it off on the Infinity.
Thanks for the replies!

To answer in off-topic mode, for completeness' sake: this does absolutely NOTHING for your tablet's battery life whatsoever, provided you religiously charge it to the same level (i.e., chock-full). You might have seen the tablet homing in on the correct prediction of battery life, something it may need a few charging cycles for.
I find this "on" when plugged in feature annoying.
Didn't initially notice the tablet doing it.
Our other tablets don't do this.
Kind of a weird thing.
Maybe Asus was thinking it would be good for pushing updates while in charge mode.

This is the only Android device I've seen do this, but I have only had HTC Phones. And it is annoying, but I've just learned to do like you said and turn it off after plugging it in when I want to charge it powered off. Which is kinda rare any more. I would only charge it turned off if I wasn't using the brick that came with it.

Just to clairify, I believe we are talking about two different things here, correct me if I'm wrong.
OP is having issue where when he has the tablet powered off completely that it then powers itself back on automatically when plugged in.
Others mentioned screen automatically turns on when plugged in and wants to stay on in some cases and even when turned off, the tablet doesnt deep sleep.
If this is correct, then I'll continue with this. i have had this happen to different devices and seems to be a feature of the ROM. One of the last ROMs I ran on my phone drove me nuts with this. I could never charge my handset with it powered off. When it was near dead and I was leaving soon, I would want it to be as juiced up as possible in a short amount of time so I would power it off and charge. Then one day after flashing I could no longer do this. Then I switched ROMs and I can again. I havn't tried this on my TF700 yet, but would find it annoying if I needed to. I have seen this happen on other devices before realizing it was connected to my ROM, although I could work around by selecting shutdown after it booted up. But with the ROM on my note it would shut down and come right back up.

Stop wake on plug/unplug (not rooted)?

Is there any way to stop the Note 5 from waking up when you plug or unplug the charger? I had a similar issue on my old S4 that I was able to eliminate, but that phone was rooted. I have not rooted the Note to keep Samsung Pay. Any suggestions?

I've done some search on this a couple times and haven't found anything. I'm curious on this even if there is a rooted solution (I am systemless rooted so I can use Android Pay).
Isn't this phone waking up, when you plug or unplug charger a natural thing ?
Just the way devs planned the device to function or is it really an issue.

For me, the wake up is a hassle. For example, every time I set my phone on my wireless charger, the phone wakes up and I have to turn the screen back off so it will charge faster. Also, when my alarm goes off in the morning and I disconnect the phone from the charger, the screen comes on and lights up the room until I can turn the phone off again. I would like to avoid both of these scenarios.

Same for me. I have a wireless charger by my bedside and I hate that it comes on when I put it on and take it off. Especially since I get up way before my wife and just want to grab my phone and not turn it on until I'm out of the bedroom. I can't believe they don't make that an option in settings someplace.
edit: The no wake on charge option in this xposed tweaks app works. http://repo.xposed.info/module/com.smartmadsoft.xposed.aio Though have to be rooted (no Samsung Pay and running Xposed)
