Powering off at night time? - General Topics

Hello,
This is my first post on these forums so be nice!
I've had a search and haven't been able to find a specific answer to my query: should I power off my Touch HD at night time like I used to my Nokia phones before this?
Only reason I ask is I know powering off is the same as a soft reset, and as I use HDTweak some things seem to change when I turn off/on. Also, I didn't know if it was better battery life wise to power off and turn on or just leave in standby?
Thanks for your opinions, and thanks for such a great forum!
Owen.

don't matter which of cause not being 100% off mean that it will use batt to still work as a callphone if somebody calls
personally i just connect it to ac power at night being as it's a myth that it's not good
for the lithium ion batts to be charged often that way

I power mine off every night to cool & rest the battery after a busy day on the ppc! I do not loose any settings or have any issues with the battery. cheers

I never turn off mine...

I use phoneweaver to automatically turn off my radios at night. The PPC stays "on" but the phone part is off. Saves a lot of battery and I can still use it as an alarm clock.

Sounds like a good idea, I'm just never too sure whether to trust my phone as an alarm! I left it on over night and the battery stayed at the same &age, whereas turning it off and on seems to drain about 3% each time.
Thanks for the replies.

Turn off your phone? If you do that how do people call you? I'm a minister and my phone is ALWAYS on. It doesn't seem to hurt anything. My batteries don't seem to be affected by always being on. As I'm sitting here at my desk my phone is plugged in, partly to stay charged, and partly to make sure that it is always synced with my computer as changes are made.

The point is that I don't want my phone to be on over night so that people can't text/call me to wake me up. People that I want to know my house number have it

Then vibrate or off sound can be an option and leaving your phone on just to have a record of who call you on the time you donĀ“t want to answer

Thanks for all your post

Mysterious battery behaviour

I had about two hours left on my XDAII battery when I switched the device off. When I then tried to switch in on, probably two or three hours later, it would not switch on. The green light was blinking as it normally does when the phone is on. I plugged in the cable to charge it, but the light did not change into a steady green (or is it yellow?) as it does when you're charging. I didn't want to hard reset it because I would lose some data, so I took out the SIM card and put it back in, as this normally soft resets the device. Instead however, it hard reset it, and I found the main battery to be empty. This still shouldn't have hard reset it, should it, since my back-up battery was full?
This has happened twice now. I'm starting to suspect that something is draining the battery even when the screen is switched off. Has anyone else experienced the same?
This may be obvious and you already know but it's worth considering.
When you switch off are you sure that you are turning the XDA II off or are you just turning off the backlight?
A quick press of the off button turns off. An extended press just switches off the backlight and the XDA stays on, draining the battery.
I've made this mistake too, especially in low light conditions. Hope this has helped.
Yes, that must be it! I had no idea that the off-button behaves like this! I don't think it did on the XDAI. Thanks a lot for this information, I will now be very careful with how I press the button, and check the screen in good light just to be sure.

What is the indication G2x is charging while off?

No LED and nothing on screen?
crap, i knew i'd be missing notification lighting but i forgot this applies to charging as well... d'oh...
still excited for mine to be delivered tomorrow... the wait is killing me ... sorry for not having an answer
shortly pressing the power button will bring up a screen animation showing how much of the battery is charged, found out by accident actually!
Actually if you want to see the charging process indicator, press one of the volume buttons to temporarily turn on the screen - this is much better than the power button method as we all know if you hold the power button down too long, the phone boots - undesirable when you are calibrating.
I get very inconsistent results with either button. How do I know when it is done charging based on that green battery indicator?
I just noticed this as well, while the phone is powered on there is NO way to tell that it is charging, or how far it is? all previous phones had at least a small LED that went from red, or orange, to green. This has nothing.
So only if powered off, you can check. lame!
It's a game, you guess how much it's charged and then you turn the screen on to check if you were over or under.
I'm not being smart or anything but why would you turn you phone off to charge it? The only reason I can think if is not wanting to be reached while sleeping or something but at that point you can just silence your ringer.

I bought mine and it's turned off, so there's your answer. I have no way of knowing if it's even charging or anything.
What does it take, .0003 seconds to hit the volume button? My HD2 has all types of notification lights. I never go by them. If I'm looking for notification of something then I usually have my phone is my hand. Very simple to turn it on.

The phone isn't able to be turned on. I just bought it an hour ago and since it's completely dead, I can't turn it on to check anything, nor is there an indicator of if it's even getting a charge. Or I have a bad phone. Either way, it's not exactly a great design.
*It just turned on finally. Guess it was beyond dead when I got it.
Boo hoo. Who cares? You soul knew this before you bought it, our should have

Your soul knew it before you bought it? Wow! My soul hasn't mentioned this to me yet.
I've had two occasions today where the phone doesn't want to wake, and holding the power button down for any length of time does nothing.
Probably something related to GPS, as I think I left Earth running the last time.
I do wish there was an LED, or a capacitive button left on, or SOMETHING.

What are you talking about, if the phone is on just press the power button once and it says "Charging (XX%)"
I know because i'm charging mine as i type this, currently at 88% charged...
^what he said
Here's my tip for this:
Clock.
Yep, Clock. Tap it, then hit the button in the top right if you want to dim the screen.

Negative.........
When the battery is fully charged a small screen pops up telling you your battery is at 100% and to unplug the charger.
There are some apps n the market that will put a small light on your screen for charging, email, text, ect.

[Q] Battery issue

I seem to have run into a problem with the battery in my phone lately. Every time I charge the phone, and sometimes when it's not charging it will turn off. Just randomly no real cause. I don't get a text, or anything. I just pick it up try to unlock it and am greeted with the white HTC screen. This would lead me to believe that I have some kind of short near my battery causing it to not transfer charge across the contacts when its in a certain position or something along those lines. I've also turned it on while it's plugged in and the red LED that says it's charging is on, and the phone said that it had 0 battery left and shut down. I then plugged it back in and turned it on again and it did the same thing, but this time it charged for about 30 seconds, and then the battery was at 100% again. Leaving me going WTF is wrong with my phone.
I'm using a CM7 kernel with Gingerbeast if that helps.
Basically I want to know if anyone else has had this problem, and if so what can I do about it? Also if I did anything wrong or could do something that would help like flashing a better kernel or something advice on that would be much appreciated.

I.read a post once that quoted an HTC Rep. Went something like this...
"Unplug phone and Reboot. Plug in charger and charge until LED shows green or full charge. Unplug. Power off phone. Plug in charger until LED shows green or fully charged. Unplug phone. Reboot. Use phone. Power off. Plug in. Charge until LED shows green or fully charged. Reboot. Your device should be fully charged and battery reset(?).
Ok first off, halfway through when you robot and use phone. You probably won't get a chance to use as the phone may/ should shut itself down and show no battery. The HTC rep did not clearly state that or.it was lost in translation.
Secondly, after it shuts.itself down, let it charge fully. It should not take too long as your battery is already charged. Then reboot and let it run its course. Then fully charge again.
Alternatively - you can download current widget to monitor your battery and also see how much current it is drawing and know when it is fully charged. Even tho your LED is green and battery shows full, it will.still.draw current gradually for up to an hour or so. Very nifty .... Hope it helps!
And a search for these topics will.probably yield much more in depth info....

Did this problem exist on stock ROM?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA Premium App
I seem to have reset my battery on my own as far as I can tell. I basically did the process you described just without knowing.
This problem did also occur on stock rom. It hasn't happened in the past week, so I think it's fine. I may reflash my rom and kernel soon for good measure.
Also sorry for not replying I've been away from civilization for almost a week.

uh oh this is how my problem started.
I hope my problem doesn't turn into that. It seems fine now it hasn't done it in a while

Wont turn on?

Last night i turned off my phone because i didnt want anyone waking me up. Today i try to turn on my phone and it wont work at all?? Its rooted by revolutionary and i think that it may not be charging properly or something but ive tried 3 different chargers and it wont turn on?
When you plug it in does the orange light turn on? Leave it plugged in for an hour before you try to turn it on just to make sure the battery at least has some juice.
Yeah it does but after n hour it just turns off?? It was charged yesterday when i turned it off too

Flash the Modaco 4.0.0.9 recovery
I had a similar issue a while ago when my phone turned itself off and wouldn't turn on no matter what I tried. See the thread for more info:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1263740
Luckily I got it to turn on after taking out the battery and letting it sit for a few minutes before putting it back. Not sure if that's the case with your phone but worth a try. Let us know how it goes.
By the way I haven't had this issue since then so I haven't sent it for replacement.
Mine has always done that since I rooted it. If I use the power button to power off, I have to remove the battery to get it to turn back on. It's only a minor inconvenience to me as I very rarely turn my phone off, but it is a peculiarity.
I think you guys just aren't giving the phone enough time until you reboot. Make sure fastboot is unchecked. Turn off the phone and wait a good 10 seconds after the screen goes black. You don't tap the power button, you kind of have to hold it for a second but there's no reason it shouldn't work. Make sure you're on the 4.0.0.9 recovery as the older one had some power issues. If after all that you believe you have a defective unit, contact t-mobile and exchange it!
I have personally had this issue and the fix was surprising...a Tmobile store rep helped me with a great solution....
First removing the battery is the key. According to him while HTC makes great phones his Sensation and the mt4gs both had an issue with the battery not seated perfectly. Note I had already tried to open and remove the battery with no success. But I did it in front of him by myself and it worked.
Then he sold me about the Anker Batteries - search Anker for the Win. He told me about them, because of their tighter specifications HxWxD which make them a really tight fit to get in and out but that forces them to contact the battery contacts.
Since then never had an issue and I get a really long charge and very little battery heat.

Z3 turns off while charging

Hey, just bought a new Z3, and I plug it in, at night before I go to sleep. In the morning after not waking up in time since the alarm clock didnt work, I was surprised to fins out that the phone is off, it has the black screen with the loadimg icon in the middle. Holding the power key turns it on normally. Heppened like 3 times now. When it is charging, but I use it for like a few hours nothing heppenes, its not turning off when I use it. And all kind of stamina and battery life savers are off. Dont have a fishy app or anything either.
Hopefully u couls help me with that.
