Some very basic questions, recovery - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have been searching for this through the forum and havent found it, seems like a very basic question.
I just rooted my TF, I am just trying to learn about all the things I have been reading about. I rooted it with BRK's batch script here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1185104
so I should have ClockworkMod 3.1.0.1-solarnz-R3 installed.
My question is, how do I boot into it (normal recovery or CWM recovery)? or even know if it is installed? I tried using quickboot and I choose recovery but it seems it just booted back normaly.
thank you for any help.
John

Turn it off, then turn it on by holding the power and volume down button for a few seconds. Some text should appear on the top left that says, press volume up within 5 seconds to recovery. press volume up, and you're there.

Another way that is easier on those poor keys is to use one of those :
"reboot to recovery" type apps that are , I think , downloadable in the forums. I'll post it here if I find the link. I felt like those buttons were pretty fragile so started using that instead.
EDIT: http://goo.gl/RbyLo is a spot you should be able to load 'reboot to recovery' from. (credits to gnufabio)

I agree 100% about those buttons, I think about that every time I turn it on and off. that is why I downloaded the quickboot program from market but it doesn't seem to work.
thanks for the link!!!

SORRY FOR BAD LANGUAGE...but i really realy realy need help

hi all,
heres the deal. i rooted my defy with superoneclick, it worked great.
heres the problem and what i think is the cause but i need a solution!
PROBLEM: i switch my phone on, it starts normally
motoblur screen
then
T mobile screen
then
the normal swipe unlock
i ulnlock it fine but as soon as i do the wallpaper dissapears/goes black. i cannot access any apps. none of the buttons work (menu,home,return/back,search) but the info bar/ menur bar thing at the top that swipes down works fine and what ever is in it works fine i.e when i plug into usb im able to choose portal and tools and those other 3. but when i just leave my phone on lock then press power button/activate unlock screen. it will show normal background with time and everything looks normal.
the CAUSE ( i think )
i was installing apps and deleting motoblur stuff. but it it was one of those two, i isntalled an app and i deleted a file at the same sort of time. the app installed was some startup app killer or a firewall of some type. or it could have been that i deleted an apk file that had a real short name i think, like blur.apk
PLEASE HELP ME. I need a solution FAST its my first smartphone ever and i paid alot for it. if you need my phone info it was
moto defy android 2.1 uk version but then rooted with super one click
THANK YOU IN ADVANCED FOR ANY HELP
ps i have installed rsd lite and it is recognised by it but thats as far as i know what to do...

i sent you a pm too. thanks for being so quick to reply. but i dont know how to do that stuff im a noob this is my first androidsmartphone ever but im a very quick learner
all good. For my phone. ( droid incred.) when the phone is off i hold power and the volume up key. then i select recovery using the volume keys. I know the buttons to push are different on some phones so you might neeed to use google to find the right 2 keys to hold down while booting
i currently have it in boot loader mode, it says battery ok, ok to program, transfer mode, usb. and thats all it says. no recovery options at all
Ok, found this in another forum. this is how to get into your boot menu i guess:
The boot menu happends when you press the volume down key and the power button.
When it takes you to the triangle part press the volume up key and the power button this action brings up another menu on which you can reboot and other settings.
the first triangle with exclamation mark inside it with the lil andorid man comes up, but the second menu doesnt, im holding vol down and power to get up this image, the to get second one you say to do vol up and power...i tried it, held it for a while but still no joy
ok, give this a try
"If you swipe the bottom right corner when you see the triangle you will get a menu. From there you can reboot or reset"
Still looking for more
nope sorry still dont work. i really appreciate you spending your time doing this it realy does mean ALOT. thank you i hope the solution isnt far away!
Ok, this is from the t-moble forms:
One suggestion...
Pull the battery.
Hold down the volume down key and press the power button.
Continue to hold the volume down key until you seem something happening on the screen.
This should boot you into recovery mode, you'll see a little green Android stood next to a yellow warning sign.
Press the bottom-right corner of the screen, a menu should appear.
Use the volume keys to scroll up and down.
Scroll to 'Wipe DATA/factory reset' and press 'ok' (bottom-left of screen) - you may need to re-confirm in a sub-menu.
After the wipe completes, scroll to the 'reboot' option and press 'ok'.
If you do that, you completely wipe the handset, same as if you performed a full factory reset on the handset.
Obviously, this will get rid of anything you have on the handset but if your only other option is an exchange, you've nothing to lose really.
http://support.t-mobile.co.uk/discussions/index?page=forums&topic=801038121b7ab9012dee673eff007b6f If you wanted to look. its the 2nd guy down. issue has nothing to do with this but same steps
it says it worked that it did the reset properly but still same original problem.
it says first line....
E:cant open /cache/recovery/command
that is in the recovery mode / reset
do you have a rom that you can try to flash? any rom really just to rule out a rom issue. you can try to find a rom here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=855&order=desc&page=1
im going to give it a try ill get back to you to let you know how its going within the next 20 mins, thanks for all your help
here is an option for a factory reset.
1. Turn the power off on the Defy (if it's frozen, pull the battery out & reinsert it)
2.Hold the volume down button
3. Press and hold the button until the device turns on
4. You'll get a menu that allows FASTBOOK, RECOVERY, CLEAR STORAGE, and SIMLOCK
5. Select CLEAR STORAGE, by pressing the Volume Down button
6. Press and release the Power
7. Now just confirm your decision Volume Up for YES, Volume Down for NO
it says on rsd lite . fail flashing process. unable to retrieve initialization values from INI (0x07029);phone connected
isnt working for some reason
that menu...mine says
from top to bottom
Android system recovery <2a>
reboot system now
apply sdcard:update
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
(then at the bottomit says...)
E:cant open /cache/recovery/command.
but yet it will still go through the process like it is working but it doesnt fix it
Did you try the top option. Android system recovery <2a>
i wish i had that same phone to replicate this problem
im sorry i didnt write it clear enough the top android recovery thing isnt an option, its like the header/title for the program or page its written in red. the options to choose are in blue

[Q] No Recovery after Root

I just used the Universal Root v4 Live CD for my TF, but I do not have any recovery abilities. If i hold up and power when I turn it on, it just turns the screen black. Nothing else happens. I do have root. I have checked it with many different programs. Any Advice? Thanks in advance

In the 1st post of the thread there'a a FAQ:
[Q] How can I reboot in APX/recovery mode?
[A] Do as follows:
VOL UP + POWER BUTTON for ~5sec = boot in APX mode. The screen will stay black as if it is turned off. This mode is used only when you use nvflash to flash boot/recovery/data partition (this is the first step in my script).
VOL DOWN + POWER BUTTON ~5sec = will appear a screen where it says to press vol down again to wipe all data (obviously you don't want to do it now), or press up to enter RCK (recovery mode). If you installed CWM you will see the main menu navigable with vol up / vol down / power button.
If you have the stock recovery you will see a green android with a esclamation mark on a yellow triangle.
[Q] Help! I can't reboot in recovery mode!
[A] I think the main problem here is that it is a bit tricky to get into CWM recovery, once you see the small text come up don't try to read anything, just hit volume up.
Hold volume down plus power until the text in upper left shows,if you let go too early it just boots up and you never see the text. If you wait too long you don't get the option to boot into recovery. Hope that helps..

power button doesn't work either? I thought that functioned as the 'enter' button... Imnuts' post will work for sure, but I have to ask why are you in the stock android recovery? unless you meant CWM?
Thanks imnuts, what is the easiest way to adb reboot?
My screen is showing similar to the attached photo but the trackball statement it instead says: [Enter: Home Key, Select : Vol UP / Vol Down
Its asking me to use the home key for my enter but my home key is not functioning. But if you know of an alternative I am happy to hear what your thoughts are.

ADB (Android Debug Bridge, I think) is tethering your phone to your pc and pushing/pulling files or forcing commands to your phone using the command terminal... it doesn't work right away as you need the latest android sdk files, java/jdk files, and altered C:/ path directory (assuming you're running windows, I think thats how it works if anyone can help me out here )
does the power button work as a 'select' button though? also can't you just battery pull and restart the phone or does it restart right into that recovery? just an FYI that is the stock android recovery which you can't (or rather shouldn't) be doing anything in, CWM is recommended... I vaguely recall there being another button that would work like the search button but I'm not sure
Thanks for the advise anoninja118, I appreciate the help.
So last night I tried ADB but was not successful at it, maybe ill look into that more. Unfortunately my phone does not allow the power button to work as the 'select' button. Yeah and pulling the battery leads me back to the same recovery screen. What is CWM?

CWM is Clockwork Mod, its the custom version of that recovery that will allow you to flash files and change options: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1112804
you can flash superuser (what gives you root access) easily in there and just reboot and presto you're rooted... I haven't seen any tutorials on how to use CWM since its fairly easy, to boot into it just hold power+volume up+home until 'Samsung' appears then let go of power and hold the other two until it comes up, then use volume keys and power button to navigate and select
Odin is required to install CWM first though and this thread gives a little info on that: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1160580

Step by Step tutorial needed performing nandroid

on a xoom i cannot see the screen on...
Dropped my xoom today, and the screen is unusable..however it still powers on and functions.
Was wondering if some1 could take the time to give me a "blind mans" step by step tutorial on doing a nandroid backup with clockworkmod.
Id like to do a back up...boot it up and pull the nandroid file from it via usb and restore it on my replacement tab.
What i need is after you boot into recovery, how many vol presses it takes to get to the nandroid and what combination of presses needed to successfully begin a nandroid.
this would be greatly appreciated.
Which recovery are you using? As this will greatly affect your decision. Team Rogue, the old tiamat, or the newer EOS?

Hey There,
reboot your xoom,
As soon as you hit reboot, you should see a Motorola logo appear. Wait 3 seconds and tap the Volume down button and the words Android Recovery should appear on the screen. When you see that, tap the Volume up button and you’ll boot into recovery.
Now from Recovery, using volume buttons, up and down, you can navigate up and down. The power button is to select your highlighted option.
so, once you are in recovery, use volume down button to go to "backup and restore"
press power button to enter that option.
select again backup, activate by pressing power button.
perform the backup. you will see a progress bar in the recovery bot. once done. reboot your system via recovery. (go back and reboot system now).
boot into xoom, thru file manager you will be able to see a directory under /sdcard called cwm or something like that. inside, you will see your backup compressed files.
download airdroid on the xoom, free app from the market, use it to pull that backup over wifi to your laptop or use direct usb cable to mount your xoom as external disk on the laptop.
Hope that helps.

You are on the old tiamat. Crap. I'm on the EOS one now. If I can find a zip flashable for the old tiamat one I can help you. But currently I do not have a laptop to flash files like recoveries onto the device through fastboot. Let me do some searching. See if I can find a zip for it.
--Sent from GlaDos baked potato
Edit: got the zip. Give me ten minutes to flash it and see what you need.
So once in recovery here is what to do for performing a nandroid:
press the down button 5 times,
press the power button once,
then press the power button again (it is now performing a nandroid), I'd leave it 15mins or so to be safe that it's actually completed considering you can't see.
Then in order to mount it to your PC so you can get the files across:
Press the down button 6 times,
Press the power button once,
Press the down button 8 times,
Press the power button once,
Then on your PC you should be able to see all the files on your SD card.
To power your xoom off:
Press down once,
Press the power button once,
Press up once,
Press the power button once,
Press up twice,
Press the power button once,
Your Xoom has now powered off

[Q] Can't go to bootloader, always goes to ClockworkMod recovery

Hey people my first post so you can call me whatever you want
Here is the thing:
I rooted the phone, installed a custom ROM and such, on the process I guess I installed this Clockwork Mod Recovery v5.8.3.1.
Well I wanted to change the ROM so I downloaded the new one (lastest trickdroid) and follow the steps, BUT!, when trying to acces the fastboot thing on that menu that can't remeber the name of, I jsut can't get into it.
When I tart the phone pressing volume down + power, instead of going to that menu it goes to clockwork mod. I was suposed to "Flash the stock boot.img from the ROM with fastboot", but well I dont know what I did or wahtever, I can't aces that menu.
What should I do?

I am having what seems like the same issue with my phone. Just posted a thread not too long ago asking for help. One person (a SR. Member) informed me to try to restore using a NANDROID backup (which I dont have). Going off of his advice, if you have the backup, try that. If not, we both seem to have the same problem. Good luck with your issue, I will be checking both our threads for solutions from now on!

Extra Help (Maybe)
Hey again, I found some useful information that allowed me to get into my bootloader! If you are still stuck in CWM, use the volume down button to go down to the "advanced" button at the bottom of the list. Since this is a button that leads to another list and not a direct action, you can hold down the power button when highlighted over it and turn the phone off. From there, just hold Volume Down and Power as you would normally do to boot into the bootloader. Hope this helps since it worked for me!
So:
-Navigate to "advanced" (Just highlight over it)
-Hold power button for 10-15 seconds
-Phone should power off
-Volume Down + Power to boot into Bootloader
-Profit?? (Just Kidding )
Again, hope I could be of some assistance!

well I dont know what I did. I just turned the phone off normally. Then did the power + b down, held it for about 6 seconds, relesead the power then the volume and BOM, bootlader appeared, hmmm okay I guess
Have a look at fragkiller1 thread for fixing your issue.
well now I can't even get into CWM sigh
A brief flash of a screen appears now while booting it, but it just skips to the actual OS. I have the fast boot disabled ohh man what do now? DId I mess up something?

Ya, make sure you got the right rom and get yourself back into the bootloader and you should see recovery there then do a full wipe and flash the rom and also if you feel you might of flashed the wrong boot.img reflash it to make sure.
So it's over, all solved.
I tried to install a new ROM but CWM got me an error mounting the SD, then I installed another recovery (TWR) and installed the new ROM (viper one s) flashed the boot.img and now everthing works wonders, for now.
Thanks a lot Darknites for trying to help me I really appreaciate that

Np dude glad you got it sorted but ya TWRP is way better for the sd mount and if you have 1.09 or lower Hboot it can also flash boot.img.
