[GUIDE] CONVERTING EXT4 ON gingerbread NEW!!! 8-10-11 - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

I CANT STAND PEOPLE NOT BEING ABLE TO CONVERT GINGERBREAD TO EXT4
I KNOW THE ANSWERS AND HERE IS MY NEW GUIDE!!!!
There are only 2 known problems when it comes to converting to ext4 on gingerbread
1. your data partition stays on ext4 after you flash rom, you dont hear linda talk, and when you download apps they disappear next boot or restart your phone.
2. voodoo lagfix is disabled but linda is telling you there is not enough space on sdcard
HERE IS HOW YOU FIX THESE ISSUES: 1. corresponds to issues 1, 2. corresponds with 2
1. you need to flash ext4 converter,
flash ICBINB froyo
DISABLE VOODOO and turn off SYSTEM LAGFIX
boot up ICBINB froyo
go into cwm
make sure voodoo says everything is disabled and turned off still
flash the gb rom of your choice(make sure it has kg4 kernel with ext4 support)
after you flash the GB rom make sure voodoo still says everything is disabled and off
boot up GB rom
install busybox
install voodoo control app
turn on ext4 on everthing except debug
turn phone off
turn phone on
listen to linda
NOW IF YOU HAVE ISSUE 2 COME UP WHERE LINDA SAYS NOT ENOUGH SPACE ON SDCARD
2. this is an easy fix, i just did this 4 times on separate occasions to make sure i was right about this.
disable lagfix
go into cwm
advanced
create partition
make it 1024
with 0m swap size
give it time as it will take a minute to create
reboot recovery
enable lagfix on everything
and listen to linda FINALLY do what you want her to do
if you still cant get ext4 converted then YOUR doing something wrong, i have truly figured out how to get around every problem when it comes to converting ext4 on GB roms and i have done it MANY MANY TIMES so be sure to READ REREAD AND READ AGAIN!

Great job, bro.
I met both of two problems, and I tried all kinds of combinations to figure it out.
I finally figure it out before you posted this, and I can verify your solution does work. Your explanation is very very clear and hope everybody will be happy with their SGS 4G.
dsexton702 said:
SOOO many people are having problems with getting linda to convert all the partitions, but I BELIEVE i may have found the issue.
IF you are having the problem of flashing he gb rom and your phone isnt picking up your memory card OR linda isnt saying anything when you enable voodoo its most likely because your /data or /cache partition is still on ext4
so to fix this, simply go into CWM flash ICBINB rom OR any other rom where you can use voodoo lagifx to TRULY disable lagfix on all partitions, then once your partitions are fixed back to rfs go ahead and try flashing the GB roms via cwm and of course go ahead and disable lagfix install busybox then enable lagfix
now if your having the problem of linda telling you that there is not enough space on sdcard, i believe this is because you have an ext4 partition on your sdcard from froyo so you are going to have to remove that partition before linda will convert your partitions as ext4
you can remove the ext4 partition on your sdcard by using minitool partition and erasing the ext4 partition
then go ahead and flash the GB rom disable voodoo install busybox and enable voodoo
hope this helps you guys

Another way to check to see if you are on RFS or EXT4 is to run a few adb and shell commands. I'm currently running a diff setup the usual, but they should all say RFS if you are trying to be off EXT4.
adb shell
su
mount

If I go to flash a new ROM I always format system, well in order for it to format it has to unmount. Doesnt it? I mean ive done it every time ive flashed a new ROM through cwm and I find that I dint have near the issues others have. Just wondering was it an issue for others as well?

The quickest way to see if you have any lingering EXT4 partitions is to open adb shell or a terminal emulator and enter:
Code:
su
mount | grep ext4
If anything is still EXT4, it will show something like:
Code:
/dev/block/stl11 /cache ext4 rw,noatime,barrier=1,data=writeback,noauto_da_alloc 0 0
At which point you can proceed with desexton's methods.

I did a successful ext4 conversion with a spare 2 gb sd card. Now with my 16 gb back in Linda still wants to convert on boot. I confirmed ext4 with the voodoo app (not room on sd card), it is no big deal and i can ignore it, let me know if it is normal.
BTW, thanks for the great work

Team Whiskey (ext 4 native sd card possable with this?)

Dev question since u 2 built the rom and kernel.
Curious as to changeng the fstab and recovery.fstab for the sd cart from vfat to ext 4 and formating the card as ext 4 and remounting. Is there support in the file system for this? Just curious as to trying to find ways to get ext 4 sd card support on boot for the instant mount's and no more scanning sd cards
and this seems to be the most logical way to add sd card ext4 support without the need of programs are makeing 2 partitions.
like adding and or changeing to
/dev/sdb1 /media/sd ext4 users,iocharset=utf8,umask=000 0 0
or
/dev/sdb1 /media/sd ext4 auto,exec,rw,async,user 0 0
for mount speed increase for asynchronous writing

[Utility] Format back to ext3....

Just flash in clockwork and it will format your system and data partitions back to ext3. Faster than dealing with nandroid restores.
Useful for reverting from installs using Dragon or Trinity kernels that convert you to ext4.
NOTE: This FORMATS your partitions, you WILL lose all data held on them. Your phone will NOT boot until you install a ROM ZIP file or restore a nandroid backup. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
CREDIT: @paulobrien from Modaco wrote this for the O2x. I just changed the partition names to match our setup. I left his original banner in there as a result. My change amounts to about 4 bytes. If you have issues, please don't bother him, post here.
This is great...I always hesitate trying out updated or experimental kernels because of the amount of time it takes to nandroid....the cm7 kernel has been really good as of late so I've been sticking with that

cwm is set up to keep whatever format you have at the time you run it, so if you are on ext4, the format command will format to ext4. It makes sense, you wouldn't want to write an ext4 fs onto a partition with vfat on it, for example. Not automatically anyway. And most users wouldn't know what to tell it to use if it were to give you the option. The forum would be full of "What file system do I use?!?!?"... The usual method is to restore a nandroid backup from stock or a stock file system. This is significantly faster.
It is of somewhat limited usefulness as many kernels/roms don't change the filesystem. However, as I switch around a lot with running tests for the cm guys, my own stuff, etc., it's nice to have a fast way to deal with it.

[mods]cm7 on hold until further notice

Having troubles? Provide me with a logcat from the moment you see your splash screen on booting so I can further assist you.
https://sites.google.com/site/androidhowto/how-to-1/save-logcat-to-a-text-file
YOU MUST have a recovery and kernel that supports ext4 in order to use this patch. Pleas at this time only use CWM RECOVERY, format and wipe everything before installing.
1. Format system
2. Format data
3. Format cache
4. Format sd-ext
For more information on how this type of apps2ext works please visit the CyanogenMod wiki.
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Apps2SD
--------------
A lot of these scripts are based on the stock Cyanogenmod scripts to mount sd-ext partition and allow a2sd.
I've edited the stock system/etc/init.d/05mountsd to mount ext partition as ext4 instead of ext3. The system/etc/init.d/10apps2sd was made by Cyanogen himself and it can be found on the Cyanogenmod github. I've edited it to activate and utilize the sd-ext partition of the device. The swap patches and the cmparts source edits are all my own work. Please see the github for more details.
Update: There is a certain way that this patch needs to be installed.
It does not matter if you wipe or do not wipe before flashing.
1. You need
to flash in this order, otherwise the permissions for your
rom will not be correct. Flash the rom first, then the
patch, then the gapps.
2. As
many of you might know, this rom already includes
gapps, but do not include this patch like my roms on
rom manager do. Since the patch sets
permissions for the system, and gapps will not work
correctly with the permissions if already installed in
system. I use Crash's gapps from rom manager to do this.
Flash in the same order you would for normal
cyanogenmod roms. Rom first, then patch, then gapps.
Yes even if the rom already includes gapps you still must flash gapps
This thread will only be discussion for Cyanogenmod These are AOSP Roms. DO NOT EVER ASK ABOUT SENSE ROM TWEAKS EVER, they just simply won't work with these mods.
Do not submit revised versions that are already posted, I will try to keep the patches as updated as possible. Do not distribute or modify any of the scripts without my given consent, or at least give me credit!
I am not responsible for you breaking something on your device. If you come and tell me that my mods messed up your phone, I will laugh at you.
I have been running these mods flawlessly with no issues. So let's get right into it.
Options:
WARNING: Before you do anything, do a nandroid
backup. If you need to partition your sdcard via recovery, back up your
entire sdcard to your pc before doing so as it will get formated.
If you want a2sd, then you will need a ext4 partition on your sdcard. I
recommend at least a 500+mb partition. That's it, the scripts will do the
rest.
You can not have any other types of a2sd installed before applying the patch.
The patch doesn't remove, it installs If you have manually installed some
other type of a2sd, you will need to wipe and re-flash rom. The main
important thing is, make sure system gets wiped.
If you want Linux-swap, just simply add a swap partition to your sdcard when
you go to format it in recovery, simple.
Next download and flash the latest patch over your current rom. Be aware
that if you have a swap partition, that your phone will reboot itself once after
your initial boot. Don't freak out and come crying about how your phone is
boot looping, it only reboots once. This is all part of the initial setup to make
sure swap is working properly.

Yes. Sdcard is /dev/block/mmcblk1p1, sd-ext is /dev/block/mmcblk1p2 ect. Unless of course you manage to somehow make swap partion #2, in which case it would break the scripts. I could make another patch for just swap if someone wants it.

If you partition with recovery you should be good. 512mb's is overkill. Clockworkmod recovery only allows us to partition up to around 256mb's max. And I never get close to using all of it. But I like to have extra free ram and swap available and not having it maxed out. Scary kernel will work as it supports swap. This also will replace your current cm settings as I have moddified it to allow swap. 1gb is plenty for most for a ext4 partition. If you run out of room some day you can make larger and it still runs good.

Nice. I have swappiness set pretty high to 90 and I have a class4 16gb sandisk. You can change the swappiness in the swap script to whatever you would like and then re-zip the patch.zip. Also I'll have to keep updating the cyanogenmod settings because they have all types of swap disabled in the source code. I will put my source link up on the main post. That's why I have this first one as patch1. I did test this and it works great. So it's not alpha or beta

This thread already exists. And swap is useless.
Not trying to hate on you sparky. I appreciate you being more active on the forums lately since "the incident".
In all seriousness I am interested in converting to ext4 without swap.
How would I do that with CWM? Doesn't it use ext3?
From what I've read there isn't much of a performance benefit from ext3 -> ext4, however I'm still interested in it because I would like to improve my sd card speeds.

He's over in my thread asking for my speed scores, I have seen him in a ton of threads going on about them, I don't care about scores if from what I see is results,
More Praise for ya Sparks, I have been using this now sence i installed in and am still loving it!, only problem i had was while connecting usb to the pc,
After turning USD back off, it locked up the phone, Now i didn't swap off so it was probably my own fault so ITS AWESOME!!
Thank you again and I look forward to your further releases

He believes that scores mean anything, they only matter when the phone is completely stock, unrooted
Benchmark scores can be changed easily

They are good for stock unrooted phones. Benchmarks depend a lot on the kernel and cpu and ram and gpu and other things like sdcard ect. My latest kernel in my rom on rom manager is uv. Therefore it isn't pulling in as many voltages. This is way that kernel gets lower benchmark scores then other. If your cpu runs low on physical ram, it ramps up your cpu more and drains your battery faster. It also overheats your cpu more esspecially when you run out of physical ram. Try a normal kernel (not uv) and it will get better benchmark scores.
Benchmarks mean nothing. Proof does which I will post on the OP for you right now

If your on the latest cm nightly then there will be lock-ups because there is memory leaks. Try my own nightly on rom manager. It was the last stable one on there. Try either one of the nightlies.

Agreed and thank you for the well thought out explanation, but you got better quadrant scores than me on pershoot #14.. which is not released yet? Could you elaborate on that please?

You do realize that pershoot doesn't have an evo shift right?

Can't mount sdcard

I just upgraded to GB 2.3.6 and then rooted by installing a new kernel via odin. I went in and tried to do a nandroid backup and it brings up an error that it can't mount the sdcard. Did i do something wrong or is my card going bad?

Interesting. If you use the 'Files' application when the phone is running does it show you anything? It should display the files/folders on the sdcard.
Yes I can see all my files and such just not in recovery

maybe do a fix permissions? I'm wondering if they somehow got hosed & prevent CWM from mounting.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
Nope fixing permissions did nothing for it. It still brings up can't mount sdcard error. i can't install any zip files too, same error
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
What was the phone running before you upgraded? Did you have CWM, voodoo, etc?
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
Try backing up your SD card and then reformat it to see if that fixes the error
agreed back up sd card, maybe try changing voodoo, then is that doesn't work reformat and good to go
Can't format the scard on the phone since it won't mount. any other ideas. i am not sure what i am doing with voodoo so didn't mess with that.

If your computer, Wii, or whatever can mount the sdcard you could format it that way.
Have you tried shutting the phone down, removing the SD card, and putting it back?
Do you have the Android SDK installed? If so, put the phone in USB debugging mode, crank up a shell (adb shell), and type:
mount
If the filesystem is actually able to mount the phone during normal operation you will see a line similar to this (note it's all actually 1 line):
/dev/block/vold/179:1 /mnt/sdcard vfat rw,dirsync,nosuid,nodev,noexec,noatime,nodiratime,uid=1000,gid=1015,fmask=0002,dm
ask=0002,allow_utime=0020,codepage=cp437,iocharset=iso8859-1,shortname=mixed,utf8,errors=remount-ro 0 0
If you see that, try these commands:
cd /
ls -l sdcard
That should show you the effective permissions on the sdcard, like this:
ls -l sdcard
lrwxrwxrwx root root 2011-11-20 10:16 sdcard -> /mnt/sdcard
The 'l' means it's a symbolic link (shortcut, in essence) to another place (/mnt/sdcard)
The rwxrwxrwx are the permissions (read, write, execute). You see it three times because permissions are listed for user (rwx) group (rwx) and global (rwx).
The 'root root' is the owner and group for that directory.
If you were able to execute the command, do your permissions & ownership look the same?

Samsung Galaxy S Duos S7562 - Move apps to SD Problem

Hi,
I have a Samsung Galaxy S Duos S7562. (Android OS, v4.0.4)
I am trying to move the apps installed to SD but its not happening there is no such option i tried the well known apps on play store for this task but they also don't have any such feature when installed on my phone. One of them even has it posted on its app description as given below:
Galaxy S3 is not supported:
* Galaxy S3 configures the SD card as a secondary external storage. This is configured by Samsung. Nothing developers can do about this. Please contact Samsung for details.
Not supported devices:
* Galaxy S3, Note 2, Galaxy Nexus, Tablets
* read FAQ 10 for details: App 2 SD > MENU > Settings > About > FAQ
I have also tried the adb shell pm set-install-location 2 command in the proper way.(The same command worked for my HTC Desire S and HTC Wildfire S).
So, Guys is there a way to move apps to the SD card, WITHOUT ROOTING. Just give me any information you might have about this. I am
assuming this i a problem with the Samsung Android OS.
Since its gonna be my everyday usage phone, i don't feel like playing around or changing the stock OS.:cyclops:
Minor tweaks are alright.
Thanks Guys.
Yes I have the same issue and would like to know if that is possible.
I know there is a fix for the SIII but you need root and I do not know if there is a rooting solution for this phone already.
Please let us know if there is root and/or non-root solution available...
Thank you very much!

Hi,
I install my apps in normal way. Afterwards I open the standard filemanager, go to the app directory and use the menue button. Then choose "move" and transfer the app directory to the extSdcard and fill in. Now use the app and have fun. Most of my apps operate from the extSdcard without any problem.

i have the same problem but i cant anderstand what will i do!!!!
Guys i called up Samsung the person at the call center tried to argue with me and give me all the procedures and information like i was a noob (the same things we all have tried or read on the net.) It seems they also don't know that they have a problem !! So, I got angry so he said he'll arrange a call from "TECHNICAL EXECUTIVE REPRESENTATIVE" ( the names they think for position to make them sound important )
And when i got from this above mentioned person she tried to give me the same answer but when i further protested she accepted that this is a limitation of the OS customizations by Samsung.
So, Guys only solution to this problem -- Use a Custom ROM..(CM or some other i don't know)
Please post the name and version, if some one is happy with the Custom ROM they might be using on this phone. (like if it has all the features running)

Isn't there anyway to swap sdcard by extSdCard?
/dev/fuse gets mounted on /sdcard - internatl storage
I've tried with a script on init.d to umount /sdcard and then mount mount my external sdcard on /sdcard, but doesn't work, it mounts /dev/fuse again on /sdcard
