Nexus S 4G for an HTC Arrive - HTC 7 Pro

Hey all, thought I would post this here since you all have some time under your belt with the HTC Arrive.
I have the opportunity today to trade my Nexus S 4G for an HTC Arrive. I really like the Metro UI and that keyboard is dreamy. Not a big fan of the tilted screen. Wish it could stay flat.
Anyways, what are your thoughts? Good even trade? Would you go back to Android if you could? Is there a better Windows Phone 7 coming down the line I don't know about and should wait?
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA Premium App

I really like my arrive, the keyboard is great (and a physical keyboard is a must for me) but I agree on the tilt screen, it does nothing for me other than making it more of a pain to close. I dont have any inside info or insight but I dont think I would count on another WP7 device coming to Sprint until 2012.
If you think you like wp7 I say go for it unless you really need 4G.

I have an Evo sitting in my desk right now and I'm sending this from my Arrive. I do like the WP7 UX better than Android, but the lack of available apps can be frustrating coming from an iOS or Android background.
Ultimately the choice is up to you, but I'm happy on the WP7 bandwagon.

I guess I should have mentioned that I came from a Palm Pixi and there are definitely some things I miss from webOS but app support is not one of them.

Thanks for all the suggestions. It feels solid like you are holding quality stuff. The keyboard is fantastic. I forgot how wonderful physical buttons are.
I did go ahead and make the even trade. Beforehand I did look around and even if I would have sold the Nexus to buy an Arrive, the difference was minimal. So I did an even trade and we're both happy with the swap.
The UI is snappy and there is no lag or hiccups. If there is, I don't notice them. My signal has been good so far. Haven't tried the Telenav yet. Connecting to Xbox Live was more pleasing than I had anticipated.
Bought Fruit Ninja and when I heard that achievement unlocked sound I just popped a big ol smile. Looking forward to Mango. I'll miss my Nexus and definitely will miss some of my Android apps, but I'd trade all over again in a heart beat. This is a sweet phone.
Also, the Nexus' Super AMOLED display is the best and will definitely miss that. The Arrive's LCD is decent though and I'll get used to it.

I used to have a Pre. I LOVED that OS, but boy was the hardware lacking and the dev support is disheartening. It will always be the OS that should have won the Mobile OS race in my opinion. At least it inspired other companies to improve theirs. Mango is proof of that with the card view option which I am so looking forward to.

I must say, I still love this phone!

I've had this phone since it came out in November and usually me being the tech whore that I am would get bored really quick and lust for the next big thing. As of now, I'm still loving this phone. I've rooted, on CM7, configured my screens the way I like it and sometimes I notice me touching and holding the phone just for the sake of it. Could this finally be love?? I feel like I just found a great girl and stopped going out trying to get with club chicks. lol!
Even when I go to the tech sites and checking out the new phones coming out in Barcelona, I'm like meh, I got a good "girl" at home, I'm not lusting after them. Damn, I must be getting old! hahahaha!
Yeah I said the same thing. Why did sense have so many features from espresso with the sliding bars and such only phone I even consider was the desire s cause it reminded me of the nexus one.

i share the same love as u guys. it's simple, the device meets our needs for an internet phone, and more, once rooted. how can u not fall in love with it? if u get a fully functional one, i mean.
I love this phone too! No other phone can compare yet. I'm like you, I always go for the newest toy but I've been holding on. However, the Optimus 2x might win me over.
Normally I am looking for a new phone by now (always like the latest tech) but not so much with this phone. It might take the next mytouch to get me away from my current one. I've said this many times, this phone just works.
Same here, I've changed phones a lot recently, jumping on the newest one out. At this point though, I'm acknowledging more that this phone can do pretty much everything the newest ones out can do.
About dual cores, I say "Eh.." Higher megapixel camera? Eh.. NFC? That won't be useful until maybe late this year.
Until something groundbreaking comes out that this phone can't do or do well, I'm sticking with it.
Yeah, this phone is rockin'. Even a lot of the newer phones being announced are still below spec compared to this phone - even more so when rooted, devoid of bloat, and OCed. It'll probably take a year before this thing is made "obsolete." This and the HTC Thunderbolt are the most exciting phones right now IMO.
agreed. im so happy i got to own a good one in the end. it freakin flyes.
i love my phone....
I agree 100%. My wife often tells me I'm cheating on her with my phone, my on reply is, "Sorry babe it's the other way around, I'm cheating on my phone with you." Drives her nuts. I gave her my Vibrant and traded my HD7 to get the myTouch, and I'm not getting rid of "her" anytime soon...

hd7 was boring to me, only two screens and the only customization you could do is change the color and add tiles....
id say the only kewl feature was having xbox live on it and being able to play games and unlock achievements....
the OS is nice and smooth but just plain boring for me......i wanted to get rid of the phone so bad that i traded the phone for a brand new MT4G and 100 cash....

As a hd7/windows phone 7 user, i say go for it
it is a great phone and much more than 2 screens and you will love the experience with it vs android
and the social networking aspect of wp7 is definitely much better then what android has to offer(unless u get a blur device)
most ppl saying no to the hd7 are biased towards android
and if it's too big, that's why they have different variations of phones

I was holding out getting the mt4g for a long time because I knew there was something better right around the corner (isn't there aways something right around the corner hah). Once I heard the rumors of the optimus 2x coming to tmobile, u knew u was right to wait. But then tmobile ran the free mt4g promotion last week. It was too good a deal to pass up, so I jumped on it. No regrets.

Win7 Phone OS is just plain boring to me coming from android there's no customization you can actually do maybe if we give the OS a year or so they'll be able to step it up and listen to the community. I get the feeling Win7 users are mostly coming from BBs.
Hmmmmmm, has anyone upgraded from a HD2?
I had a HD7 and it's just sad. No ability to customze anything.
So, I kept my HD2. I install ROMs as often as I change clothes. But, it is getting old.
I really want a Robot native device that performs well and has 4G capability.
The wife has a Vibrant and holly crap. That thing is the bigest pile of crap. I feel bad that I got it for her. It's slow, the XDA Support sucks since no one really seems to like it.
I been seeing the MyTouch 4g and it seems intersting.
Thoughts?

Buy Arrive, or wait for Mango?

I own an Evo, and my contract is up at the end of this month. I really want to go to WP7, but I don't (preferably) want a phone with a keyboard. I love the all touch big screens, but I wouldn't mind having a keyboard with a smaller screen.
I just want an honest opinion. Is it really worth sacrificing my Evo for a smaller screen with a keyboard, especially when I can (hopefully) get a mango device around 2012? (If Sprint even has one by then).
I have heard of the Nokia phones and the Mazaa that is supposedly coming, but you never know with Sprint's luck.
it is totally worth upgrading to the arrive right now especially since the mango beta can be found in these forums,it significantly increases the functionality and speed of this phone on the existing stock rom.

Yeah, but do you think there will be a phone similiar to the Evo (bigger screen, no keyboard)? I would hate to get it and then a few months later one comes out! Lol. I haven't gone to sprint to check out the arrive, yet. But when my upgrade is, I will keep it in mind.
Thanks for the input.

There very well could be. Hard to say whether Sprint thinks it's going to gain enough traction, especially with the iPhone supposedly coming. But I say play with the Arrive in store. The priority for me was the hardware keyboard and also the fact that I came from a feature phone.
Shrinking down in screen size probably won't feel the same for sure because you're losing so much viewable space. However, if you think the OS as a whole in how it functions is worth it to you then it might end up being a negligible complaint.
If you're really worried some new hardware might come out then just wait.

Yeah, but I don't want to wait and then be further away in a 2-year upgrade, and I think a 3.6in is still a good size.
My buddy has the Evo Shift and it seems to be a perfect size from messing with it. I had the HTC hero and that was a 3.2in all touch display lol.
I might go into Sprint. If don't like it, I have no choice but to wait. But I can't stand Android for another minute. But that is another subject lol.

Holy s*** you're right. Going into the sprint store to pick up HTC Arrive next month.
I went from the Evo to Epic to Arrive and lemme say this...
I DO miss the Evo's screen size and just the overall build of the phone. Whenever I'm browsing on the Arrive I'm always like "I wish I had a little bit more" and when I'm in the messaging app I wish I had a little bit more space.
But that's just looking at the phone. Now, interacting with the screen is so smooth its sickening. I'm talking about the screen itself, like the material. I have an iPod Touch 4G and its just...bleh. I hate using it because it picks up fingerprints way too easy so your like "i'll just dry my hands and it'll be all good" but when you do that, the screen is extra rough and its hassle. The Arrive's screen is just smooth as eggs and I dont think it picks up fingerprints..I've never noticed them and I dont use a screen protector.
Now, the material + the OS responsiveness is amazing. Once you pick the Arrive, you'll be amazed. WP7 is just too smooth. The browser will destroy your mind. Also, the keyboard is friggin' nuts. I'm on the mango beta and the thing I love is how I don't even need to touch the delete key. Let's say your typing real fast...all you have to do is tap and touch the word to correct it. Well, Swype had that on Android so it may not be a big deal to you, but the big difference now is how the WP7 takes in account you hitting the letters right above the space bar, instead of the space bar. So, "thisbis" automatically autocorrects to "this is" Add in dynamic key resizing and there's really no need for a bigger screen for a bigger keyboard.
so yeah..enough my rambling....you'll love the Arrive.

I agree with you 100%. I haven't haven't picked up the phone yet, but I've heard good things. Such as the great keyboard, and I've never heard of the autocorrect on WP7, that is amazing. I constantly have to change my sentences because the words blend together.
The OS is by far my favorite, not as much customization, but I find myself constantly changing it on Android with different ROMs. And i have tried to setcup my Android so i can have a quick glance at the screen, juat to conserve my battery. The phones are a pain in the ass. I would rather pay for quality, IMO. Being able to have a phone that lasts for 3 days is definitely a plus, not to mention improvements with mango.
I too have gone from the Epic, to the Evo, now WP7. Ive watched so many videos on YouTube, and read great reviews on the phone, I might just pick it up next month.
Thanks for your comment.

I think it's a pretty safe bet that new hardware will be released with mango. However, WHEN it'll get released on sprint is a question. As of now arrive's hardware is 1.5 years old already (first Gen snapdragon) so if you can wait I think you should.

Yeah man because I am not about to get a 2-year contract out on a phone that I might not like, well as much as an all touch display. But if I don't have any options by or shortly after Christmas I'm grabbing the arrive for sure.
Offnote, does the creaky tilt for the keyboard bother you? Does it lean to far to your face to where you need to tilt the phone to see it? I'm iffy about the design lol.

Honestly dude, just go to a sprint store on the weekend and play with it for a good 30 minutes. Granted the display model won't have mango, but for the basics it'll give you an idea of what to expect. I mean we can hype you up all day long, but it'll still come down to how you subjectively feel about it when its in your hands and visualize how it'll fit your needs.

+1, I picked up a Arrive for $220 without any contract. That's the best route IMO.
Yeah, Fall is right around the corner though. I mine as well save my POS until I see something that I truly want, not because it is my only option.
Sprint and Verizon got screwed (CDMA is always last), but this new round of WP7 devices should offer more to these carriers, if they were smart. There are 9-? handsets for ATT and T-Mobile (GSM), The only people left are CDMA.
I hope I'm not wrong. :X

Keep Skyrocket or go with iPhone 4S?

For the past few days I've been enjoying the skyrocket but I've been feeling a bit nostalgic after ditching my iPhone 3GS. I find the size of the phone to be a tad too big for me because I have to maneuver the phone a lot to slide down the notifications and the feel of plastic in my just doesn't seem right to me. I also feel that the phone lacks in music controls from anywhere whereas iOS double home press is so flawless. Does anyone have any tweak suggestion for this fix? Because If there isn't I'm just gonna go back to iOS since I feel so at home with it and with 4S jailbreak just around the corner, there's gonna be endless possibilities for it.
Thanks and Happy Holidays to all XDA members!
Man just give it some time you will get use to it. I gave up my iPhone 4s for this super skyrocket the thing is I love both platforms it came down to the screen for me iPhone to small yet better screen.

Man, I came from a 3gs, there's no going back. There are things I miss about iOS, but its all made up by features I love in android OS. I pick up my wife's 4s occasionally and laugh at how tiny the screen is. Personal preference, but I would stick it out a bit as I too had these same feelings.

And the plastic, you just need time, you get used to it.

It really all depends on what you want to do with the phone.
I upgraded to the 4S before exchanging it with a buddy for his skyrocket. The ONLY thing I miss was the Visual Voicemail integration in the iPhone was better. But the Visual Voicemail AT&T provides is pretty neat too, not to mention google voice is another great option. Camera is great on both phones. Siri I didn't use much so can't comment on it. I will have to warn you, the battery life on the 4S has also suffered now that they've implemented the same drop-down notification window thing that Android does.
I agree a jailbreak will make the 4S a great device, and that's one of the main reasons I switched is because the damn jailbreak is taking sooo long. Here they've already rooted this bad boy, and made ROM's for it. Plus I hate going through iTunes. I would much rather drag-n-drop songs and videos directly into the phone (personal preference). Another thing is, LTE is enabled in both New York and NJ and the speeds I get on the Skyrocket are pretty awesome.
These are just the points I thought of when making a decision. I might switch to another Android device in a few months, but I'm done with iOS. It's stagnant now.
@abudabu. I agree with your points as I was thinking the same things. However I have been having audio issues as posted in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1408545

I've had the phone for about 3 weeks. I did look at an iphone, but the Skyrocket really grabbed my attention. Winamp is great for music, and I also did not want to be tied to itunes. Even if you don't root and flah a rom, there are great customizations available through android market. Give this phone a chance, it is winner in my opinion.

Listen, if one gets used in a specific interface, other interfaces may look difficult to work with and master. So, if the phone is too big for your hands, and you have usability issues, why fight it? Go back to iPhone. Of course, within 2 - 3 months, the Skyrocket would be running ICS and the UI would be different again. I personally love the phone, I think that it is a great piece of hardware, but size and previous patterns of use is something that would be experienced differently by individual users.
If you want to stick it out, then you must learn a bit more about ICS (Android 4.0) because this would be the OS that you would be running the longest in this phone. My guess is that by the time there is Android 5.0 out there, you would be ready for an upgrade!!!
Get that sweet Iphone.. I mean that awesome 3 inch screen and all the Isheep followers.. who doesnt want that?
I had a Icrap for 3 days.. its so small and you can't do anything with it but look at it..
The SR or any other Android is much better than any Iphone..
get go launcher, our adw launcher, they have downward swipe to get notification down. so that we don't need to have super long thumb.

iPhone 4s is outdated
I can't ever go back to iPhone 4s. Maybe when iPhone 5 is 4.5", offered external storage support, LTE, and DivX, XviD, MKV support....then they've finally caught up.
Not to be mean, but if you have to ask. I hope you are still able to return the real phone for a childs toy. Yes i have seen a 5 year old use an iphone, and i think Fisher Price has some new iphone cases coming out next year.
^^^^^^^^_Lol true true true^^^^^^^^^^^
I agree with everything that you guys said above about the size and the plastic but it is lighter and the screen size is just phenominal compared to the iphone. My friend has an iphone 4s and he is always jealous of how customizable my phone is. I think that is the strongest part of the Android OS, the fact that your phone is totally unique to you
Let me clearly tell you who suppose to use i****!
Kids under 10!!
And Oldies Over 60!!
If you are not in one of those categories than i don't feel like explaining you the difference. Because I think You know the difference between the two.
One is Windows 8 and other is Window XP!
There you have my opinion and I m sure many will agree with me.
If you agree with me Thumbs UP!
Coming from the iPhone 3GS, I don't regret moving to the SR at all. So much more customizable, bigger screen, great interface. I don't even notice the plastic on the phone, because I always use a case on my phones. And, I'm using Go launcher, which is a fantastic interface. It took awhile to get used to android vs. iOS, but I'm so glad I stuck with it. Keep it, and you won't be sorry!
See even former iphone users know iphone cant compete with android (skyrocket) You should listen to her

[Q] Best Starter Android Device

Before anyone accuses me of not searching... I already saw http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=797411 and it hasn't been posted in for 2 years.
With that said, I have a handful of employees in my office here who have asked me about some of the recent Android devices that have come out.
All of them are Apple users and are self professed fanboys who admit they enjoy being spoon fed technology. BUT... they have all watched how productive I am using only my HTC Thunderbolt running ICS... something they have to use their iPhone, iPad AND Macbooks to keep up with me... even our owner asked why he never saw me on my laptop in meetings and projects like all the others were... and now they all want to capture what I have managed to do with one little device.
I know I could order some Nexus 4s and call it a day but I know that is asking for trouble with Apple users... I have already watched a few struggle and return their Galaxy Note IIs after a few days of use.
So with that in mind, and given I CANNOT spend all day every day training them on a new device, does anyone have any recommendations on a specific device that will not spook the iAdults? Or a resource like an app or website that will help them get through the basics without me shadowing them the entire time?
I am looking for simple and productive vs. a powerhouse for these guys... just something to ease them into Android before I pitch the move to a Nexus product. For now all they need is email, the Lync application and some quality video playback so I can take their iPads away. If I can make that transition smooth... I am sure I can raise their level of technology prowess and unlock them from super expensive Apple products they do not really need.
Thanks!
IMHO Nexus should be preferred because of pure vanilla experience.

best android starting device is the droid incredible. simple and perfectly sized. best phone ever made for its time
Any new Motorola droids or nexus4. Nexus should be easy. I got my (then) 8 yr old sister out of apples grasp with a nexus device and she'll never go back to icrap.

I don't know, wouldn't configuring simple things for them on *any* decent Android phone work? I guess I don't personally see a big difference in usability since they're all pretty much the same, using the same exact concepts.
This is my first Android phone and I've already taught my mom - who has never had a smartphone, and doesn't really understand her computer, to use an android tablet - and she's doing fine.
If they're not willing to spend five minutes learning how to use it, it's not going to work no matter what you do. :/ My dad went from a flip phone to a high-end Android phone. It's really not that hard - they need to just be open to learning.

True any phone will be as easy as the next. But if they are coming from icrap I say go nexus because they are use to getting updates as soon as they are released. Plus aosp is extremely bare and simple. Tw or sense have a lot of bloat and crap most people don't need.

I think an HTC j butterfly , sense is very user friendly and has tons of useful widjet for work, with a great mail and tasks app, the 1080p screen will be perfect for films and other stuff, plus HTC device's screens have very similir iphone's display calibration, the 5inch will be great for e-mail and webrowsing but not too big like the note 2, expandable memory so they can easily transfer files and they get also 50gb of dropbox free space and last but not least an integretion with the 'HTC media link hd' that could help(search it yourself on Google).

I'll recommend Samsung galaxy S3. Mark my words, You will stick to it...
The new Evo 4G LTE is very nice. Big screen, thin, light, and runs really well. My wife got one for a work phone and she loves it.

Galaxy Nexus has no peers. Always has the most updated OS. Super dependable and a great way to learn Droid.

I suppose the Nexus "whatever is current" would be the way to go since vanilla android shenanigans. Had an SGS3, really enjoyed it (first time I ever had a top-o-line device at the time it was at its peak). Currently have a note2, and I really do think it is a median for a smartphone/tablet. IMO, it is THAT much better than a SGS3. It functions the same as any other quality/or better android device, AND it has the s-pen and a larger screen to feel comfortable to do more with.
I have not ever been one for tablets really, as I have a laptop and decent size smartphone, the Note2 makes it even more reason to leave the tabs to everyone else. Better screen, better ppi, less costly (only buying one device vs 2).
Not to say there is much experience necessary for using a (cr)apple or ios powered device, if one is semi-capable at using it the leap to android is not that far off. Of course, things have their "getting used to" but once the power is unleashed and the people that can grasp the capabilities do, it is an amazing thing.
Yes, you can use a stylus and such with S3 or other comperable device, but the fact that it comes with one. And even buying retail price is cheaper than an iPHail phone and or tab.

Samsung and HTC sucking away the "Apple magic"

When looking at the latest releases from HTC and Samsung this past month, it made me realize that these companies have made it really difficult for Apple to keep up their dominance in the coming years. Many people were blown away, myself included, by the iPhone 4. Fast reliable OS, beautiful screen, sexy industrial design. They have been able to milk that release for about 3 years now, and with the iPhone 5 it is starting to show its age.
But with the phones that have just been announced for 2013, I don't think Apple will ever be able to "wow" anyone with a future iPhone like they did with the iPhone 4. HTC and Samsung already released full HD displays so Apple can't make that revolutionary. NFC and wireless charging have already been introduced by a handful of phones. And Samsung even released a bluetooth game controller for their devices, something that Apple has neglected to do for years with their huge selection of games. And Google Now is much cleaner than Siri imo.

Was just using a buddies 4s the other day and can't believe how many people fell for that device. I'd take my mytouch 4G over that any day if the week.
Marketing/advertising made apple and the simpletons.

You should probably delete that last line. But I agree iPhone was very cool back in the day. It was the ONLY smartphone... really. But now, even no-name chinese manufacturers such as Oppo & ZTE releasing phones that put the iPhone 5 to shame. IMHO, the only way Apple can survive now is to copy Android.. make phones bigger.. reduce the size of the icons, they make the phone look like a TOY! Also add some widgets to make the phone look less 'just full of icons'. If they do that I think they could definitely be back in the game.
Apple is great, I like the icons. But I agree with you, they should add some widgets
Apple products is totally crap compared to the devices within the same price range and even cheaper. It's good that people are starting to realize that. This company is a good example of mass brainwashing.

I don't think it's brainwashing. It has more to do with the what they were able to make.. which was a phone that was like no other phone before it. And also it didn't hurt that it had the logo of an American company.
Apple is currently falling behind with their software. It is very stable and great but I don't think Apple is going to make an extreme change to it. Older people love the fact that it is so easy to use while android peps love the customization.

If Android would use the same version for years and never implement new features they also would be very stable. This said, I think since JB came out Android made a giant leap in stability. The problem is not with android, it's with Samsung bloatwares. I do loves some of their features but they are rushing to release to quickly.

you are right dude, now apple's stock price begin to drop to around 400$ (correct me if I am wrong) they have lost their magic when job is gone.
Now It's time for apple to catch android if they don't want to be like nokia or blackberry. but it's apple who want a big profit with minimal effort.
look at blackberry they wait for lost almost all of their market before make big innovation in z10, I think apple better realize they have lost and try to catch android this time.
Big android fan but I actually bought Iphone 5 too, why you may ask because of the build quality, it looked and felt quality. Android had nothing like it as far as build quality was concerned but that has changed this year with htc one. What a phone best looking device out there and I think that's not going to change this year.
I really hope htc does well and encourage others like samsung lg to move away from cheap looking plastic.

Most of your comments seem to emphasised on aluminium vs plastic. I just hope you will be able to live with all the scratches (sooner or later) on aluminium unibody and won't put a case (plastic) on HTC one.

Regarding scratches on HTC One , this is black HTC One as you can see, silver should be EVEN better since it doesn't have any color on it. I think HTC One will do just fine regarding scratches.
I would have to agree Apple got far ahead due to their strong marketing strategies.
But you have to say, that they were the one's who revolutionized the cell phone. Android came in much later. But if you say now, yes, Apple has lost its shine a little. But everywhere i go i still see people crazy about that thing. The brand name still packs a punch.
Me being an Android fan, would love to see Android rule. But give credit where its due.

Android is slowly getting there, not sure if it's a blessing though. Looking at the amount of new members on XDA lately. A bunch of them don't even know how to put a widget on their screen(which tells me they come from Apple). I think Apple is good for some people. My 80 years old mom needs a non-customizable phone otherwise she'll change everything and won't remember where the dialer is.

Agree. Some people still prefer to keep things simple. I cant imagine my mom customizing Android phones. She will lose track of what to do after a day or two.
But that being said, Android is getting there. But lets face it, competition is the key. I don't want Android to become like Windows of the mobile world. Competition is very important.

Absolutely! For some reasons companies are turning into evil empire when they become too big. We need Apple to keep putting pressure on Android. Fortunately, 90% of the population is dum(phone wise), so Apple will still be there for a while.
Haha... yeah they would. I just hate the people who think owning an iPhone makes them higher beings than others! And believe me, there are many of them. I just don't get down to the details, coz i just don't care to explain!
That is just plain damn silly.
