I have had several instances where something I have done to my phone created a situation where I had no phone dialing capability. The error message when attempting to dial is "mobile network not available", and I'd get notice of "searching for network".
Restoring the com.android.phone app did not help with this. Neither did the suggestion seen elsewhere about entering ##72786# into the keypad to reprogram. The past solutions was to do a factory reset/wipe and then a restore of apps...pain in the a**.
Today I was able to work out another solution that has resolved this issue for me (at least this time)!.
1. Download Anycut app from http://www.freewarelovers.com/android/download/temp/1281882094_Any_Cut_1.0.apk, and open.
2. Make a new shortcut to activity named IOTHiddenMenu (the first one of three with the same name in the list)
3 Open this shortcut and select the following: TestMode Menu>UTMS>Debug Screen>Phone Control>Network Control>Band Selection>Automatic, then hit back twice to get to your main screen.
4. Download Phone Info ([email protected]) from Google Play, and open
5. Use Phone Info app to change preferred network type "“LTE/CDMA/EvDo" (click on Device Information and scroll down for first box to select and change).
If this works to solve your same issue, let me know in the thread.
And if it helps...give a thanks.
Lair12, now that I am back in the US, for the first time since using my S3 outside the US, I'm getting the no network error as you describe here...
I've tried the steps you describe here, but I still can't dial out (I do have 4g data).
I was wondering if you might have any other ideas before I start flashing? Any insights would be greatly Appreciated!
I had a similar issue recently where I could receive texts and utilize data but nothing else. Attempting to dial out would lead to the "Mobile Network Not Available."
This problem first occurred after putting a T-mobile sim in the phone. I tried numerous things such as playing with the phone settings in phoneinfo and I even restored the Verizon image which re-rooted my phone but nothing would help.
I decided to place my microsim into my thunderbolt (with an adapter of course). The thunderbolt worked just fine (phone calls, SMS and Data).
I then placed the microsim from the thunderbolt back into the S3 and everything went back to working as normal. Not sure if it will work for anyone else but I figured I would share since I went crazy trying to find a solution that did not require a full factory reset.
Well, just to close the loop, I was never able to restore my voice connection... I ended up having to reset the phone back to stock to get it back...
Oh well, it gave me a reason to try out CM10!

I'm necro-ing this thread since it just happened to me and I found a fix on CM10.1 given the root cause. Also, Anycut no longer exists in the store -- try using "QuickShortcutMaker" instead.
This seems to happen when the radio gets switched off the correct frequency. To get it back (in CM10.1), you have to dial *#*#4636#*#* . As soon as you hit the last *, you will be taken to a "Testing" menu.
Click "Phone information" then make sure your phone number and IMEI look roughly correct. Then press the "Menu" softkey and then "Select radio band". For Verizon CDMA/LTE, this should be set on "Cellular (800-MHz)". Tap it, and the signal indicator in the menu bar should go back to normal. Also make sure the "Preferred network type" is set to "LTE/CDMA auto (PRL)". (This is also where you enable "GSM auto (PRL)" if you want to make it a WorldPhone.)
The other option in here is USA band (GSM-850/PCS-1900/WCDMA-850/WCDMA-PCS-1900), which I presume is for GSM compatibility since "Global" isn't an option in the "Mobile Networks" menu in CM10.1 (without a certain cherrypick).

Interesting, thanks for the follow up!
I'm currently running Paranoid Android, but this my work for that as well. The next time I leave the US for work, (if I see this issue) I'll give it a try..
Doesnt Work for me, BUT EFS Pro Does!

Re-Necromancing Again....
Doesnt work for me. I had to push "call" after entering last star same error- no mobile network... Thought I would give it a try since I hit the wrong option on the screen. I was looking at the LTE options and got distracted... I did however get EFS Pro to Open IOTHiddenMenu. It is like the 2nd or 3rd tab, you will know it when you see it. Now to find out where (IOTHiddenMenu) is hiding on the actual phone. I did find
*#22745927
This shows an option to hide or show the "hidden menu".
I tried enable and a reboot, but no luck. Looks like EFS Pro is My Solution currently.

can u tell the steps the link isn't working anymore
I don't know when this started. I can no longer use data while a voice call is in-progress. :-\ I'm currently running CleanRom 6.5, but haven't seen this as an issue in those forums (though it's been a while since I've perused them). I'm on AT&T, by the way.
How can I go about troubleshooting this? I don't even know where to start, and googling "at&t voice and data problems" is unfortunately too vague to turn up anything which actually pertains to my problem.
Is it while you're on LTE? I remember reading a long time ago that LTE on this device (maybe others too) switches off when a voice call is made/received. So if you're set to be on LTE only, that could be the cause perhaps?

Is there an option for LTE only, or some way to do that? If so, I was not aware.
But I think your point is valid. It may be a switching problem, trying the other Network mode options might help.
Or there may just be a switching issue on the network side, that you can't do anything about (except report it to your carrier).
There sure is, if you enter the phone information menu through dialer (*#*#4636#*#*).

Ah, I figured it was via the "secret" dialer code.
Seems like a poor option to pick (LTE only), since LTE is not present in so many locations.
Yeah I highly doubt that option would be used very much, but it is a possible cause for this problem.

Thanks for the suggestions. I opened the testing window via my dialer, and the selected option is "GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto". So SEEMS like it should automatically get on something other than LTE. Weird.
Thanks again!
You can select LTE only within apn settings. Bearer type I think it's called or something. It's at the bottom. Doing so causes my network to stop working even in areas where I get LTE.

Try removing your Sim card, cleaning it with an eraser and resetting it.
99% of the time any data issues are dirty or jostled Sim cards. (Also make sure data is enabled in settings)

He has data. It just cuts out while on a call. I think we sorted it out anyway.

The switching does not always happen correctly, its a known issue on AT&T's network on this and other devices (although I haven't seen your specific problem before, with data and voice not working simultaneously).
You can also specify some network types in Settings>Mobile network>Network mode (without the dialer code) on CleanROM (its locked out on stock the AT&T ROM). Try to force WCDMA and see if that helps.
Hello,
I have a Moto G with Android 4.3 and i want to change the network type preferred, but i didnt found this option, i always used the command *#*#4636#*#* and change to "WCDMA Only" in my old phone (Samsung galaxy y duos, Android 2.3.6).
My data acess always oscillates between 2g and 3g, there is other way to force connection only at 3g ?
Thank you guys
I also wanna know that

"WCDMA Only" should force it to be 3g only. That's on every phone I've had, and it works.

Oh, when you open the app, it's supposed to take you to the menu that you were taking about.
Look and I'm the general or q&a thread, there is another topic about this. Some people are saying theirs are locked from this menu unless they do something else. If I find a link, I'll send it over

Seriously!?
Have you tried to see each option of the app?
I'm gonna try to help you: open the app, there's a menu. The first option should be "Phone Information", tap that.
So you have a lot of information about the radio, your chip, phone number, your provider, cellphone network and more...
Look for the option like "Set prefered network type" (or something like that. I'm trying to imagine how it's written in English, once here I use it in portuguese).
That option is a combobox with a lot of other options to choose. Always use:
"GSM only" (forces to use 2G, saves battery, you can also use that from Android Config Menu)
"WCDMA only" (forces to use 3G, speed up connection, but drains battery)
And "WCDMA prefered" (the phone always try to connect to 3G, but when it's not possible, it gets 2G).
The default option should be "GSM auto (PRL)". Similar to WCDMA prefered, but read this the see difference:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6591742&postcount=2
Be very careful with the other options. CDMA is very different from WCDMA.
CDMA is a different 2G modulation and it's not compatible with GSM neither Moto G.
EvDO is used only in some countries and providers, google to learn about it.
And LTE is 4G connection. I don't know if Moto G radio support that.
Remember: try it in you own risk! I'm not responsable for any connection problems you get. And try not to change nor tap any other option in that menu.
I'm using this app here with any trouble.
Ok, I see this menu, I select my network preferred type but nothing happens...
Am I supposed to do something after select the network type I want?
I mean, the Phone is still changing to 2g...
I'm so frustrated with not being able to force wcdma =/
Problem solved.
Download and install Phone testing from play store.

I am on the same boat. The change I made in (*#*#4636#*#*) - WCDMA prefered - won't save. After each reboot/restart it goes back to GSM PRL.
My G isn't rooted or modified in any way, out of box state with few 3rd party apps.
Maybe is related to APN?
Network mode
HI Friends,
I like to use network preferred mode AUTO (3g/2g),
but from mobile network -> network mode there are only
two option that we can select either "2G" or "3G".
Some days back at first time when I opend this menu
neither of "2G" or "3G" was selected so It was working fine
with by defualt in auto mode.
But once I have selected this option now It is not possible to unselect both
2G as well as 3G and put phone back to auto network select mode.
Can anybody has work around for this.
I tried "Network" app as suggested but not useful for me.

The app that shows this annoying message its called: "qcrilmsgtunnel.apk", you can freeze it but never DELETE IT, never.
¿Why? Because if you perform a factory reset your phone will never start again, you will be stuck in the activation screen when the setupwizard its calling this app (qcrilmsgtunnel.apk), i wasted 4 hour fixing this bug caused by myself.
