WP7 - Adobre Reader reflow ????? - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there,
I am pretty happy with my WP7 terminal but there is a lack of feature that pisses me off and I could solve right with my WM 6.5 easily.
I could not find information for this in the web ¿Why nobody complains about the lack of the reflow feature in adobe reader 9.0.0?
¿How do you fellows get by without this feature? ¿How do you read pdf files?
¿Is there any roadmap to support this feature? ¿Does anybody know?
Thanks

chk dis

Reflow view can make the document easier to read on the small screen of a mobile device or on a standard monitor at a large magnification, without the need to scroll horizontally to read each line of text
In most cases, only readable text appears in the reflow view. Text that doesn’t reflow includes forms, comments, digital signature fields, and page artifacts, such as page numbers, headers, and footers. Pages that contain both readable text and form or digital signature fields don’t reflow.

IF your Adobe Reader crashing...probably you need to upgrade it
or overclock ur processor...

Sure WP7?
Upss. I had an instant email notification and did not get any message ¿?¿?

¿Are you sure that we are talking wp7? Pherhaps you mean WM 6.5...
Tweaking the registry implies that I have to use chevrone or unlock the phone, doesnt it?
If you confirm pherhaps I would try to unlock it....
You mean adobe reader in windows phone 7?

My HD7 registry tweak doesn't show any Adobe..

I believe LE 2.5 was the last version of Adobe Reader for Windows Mobile 6.5. So i don't think he's talking about Windows Phone 7 at all.
Adobe Reader for WP7 does not support text reflow as far as I can tell. So you're kinda stuck until Adobe updates or someone makes a new app.

Thanks, So I believe.
I have just e-mailed to [email protected] to request this feature. If you guys do so we will get better support.
It blows my mind that there is few information an complains in the forums about the lack of this feature, Nobody reads pdf in their WP7?

It feels like, Windows promised the phone would receive many updates, but I wonder if they've got bored with the project and has left the phone hanging. Have they moved on to the next project, Phone 8?
What I like about Windows 6.5 is the re-flow as discussed, task manager that allows you have more than one application open at the same time. Applications are better in Phone 7, but it also needs the ability to create folders or tiles to group them in, otherwise the list just becomes unmanageable. The re-flow feature, which came as a tweak from XDA-developers keeps me using the Windows 6.5 HTC phone.

Hi there,
Since I wrote in agoust my request no news from adobe whatsoever.
Now I have take advantage of a recent post in adobe's blog related to the lack of reflow in a recent release for android system to ask about our business.
Do you think that I will have any response?
Any other idea to request or ask for this feature?
Thanks,
Ondaalfa

02 XDA Exec Help

hey all
i purhcased an 02 XDA Exec for work purposes, now it does evereyhting i need it to apart from 1 thing, which was a major plus thing for me to get 1.
It has WM5 on it and using Word Mobile thats installed on it.
i need to be able to get a customer to sign a word document to say job completed etc.
i have looked at settings etc and found an option in word mobile to transcribe, now this will let me handwrite onto a word doc but it changes what i've written into text which i dont want it to do. checked settings and turned off a few things to do with transcribe, but it still converts the handwritten text to normal text.
i can open a word document on it, fill it as needed with the keyboard etc, but when it comes to get a signature off a client/customer it will not do it.
it saves me printing out sheets all the time, wasting paper, when i can just xfer the docs to my pda and do it on there and then email it when finished. much easier.
one thing i have found out recently is that the option is avaialble in pocket word for windows pocket 2003 which my freind has, he showed me that in the same options where you change between transcribe and keyboard etc, his has the extra option called "drawing", which mine doenst. so i may have to downgrade os to get this feature, i have seen sky and rac people with xda execs and they can do it, i should imagine i can too!
heeelp
You can do a mix of drawing(signature) and text in the Note application.
i can handwrite into notes ya but how do i incorporate that into a word doument?
i would rather sign on the word document itself
Well, I'm not sure why. If you read this
http://www.microsoft.com/uk/windowsmobile/articles/pocketword.mspx
The Pocket Word of WM2003 works with drawings
However, if you look at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/help/pocketpc/unsupportedword.mspx
Word Mobile of WM5 doesn't support shapes
M$ has weird sense of logic in the 'improvements' of their products.
i think i might have to downgrade os to wm2003 so i will have pocket word, unless i can install pocketword onto wm5.
stupid how its in an earlier version and not the new one! heh
i will have a read of some more threads for downgrading
downgrading sounds difficult from what i've read,
does anyone know if WM6 supports drawing in word?
might be easier to upgrade than downgrade?

Not likely, read my other thread. O2 phones are not like others such as HP or Dell which offered upgradeable OS.
anyway, i think u can try other text editing softwares and/or different keyboard softwares. I heard Calligrapher (or something like that) offers both handwritten and keyboard entry at the same time.

Is there really a big delay when opening/closing the keyboard?

yes every day there is the same question and thing I'm doing, looking to the web for news about new MS mobile devices..and now thinking about buying the Vox. But the only thing so far I couldn't live with is that there should be big delay when opening or closing the keyboard.
How do you rate this?
Its a few seconds...maybe more if you have many apps running in the backround, but then everything runs slow when thats happening on any WM device... dosent bother me...
Regards - John
To be honest in my opinion its not as bad as other make it seem, as long you keep tabs on the programs you have running in the background every now and not running with only 1mb free memory then you shouldn't have a problem. One tip you can try is disabling the sound it plays when switching views in the settings. Made the switch slightly faster in my opinion.
Without the Sound it is maybe 2 times faster..
thanks guys for your prompt answers!!
Do you have a clou whether the important progs like PocketInformant or AgendaOne are running without problems in landscape mode?

I use AgendaOne and I haev not had an issue with it switching orientation. However Documents to Go has a problem as does SmartPhoneNotes - they will not fill the screen, you get a scroll-bar on the righe, pretty much making it still portrate..

hi John
I thought one doesn't need smartphonenotes anymore as WM6 should have its own notes taking application?
As well as Office Mobile (doc, xls, ppt) should be on board, isn't ?
I really don't see what the fuss is about speed of the screen rotation. Its not like it takes several minutes. Approx 1-3 seconds depending on what's running in the background is perfectly fine.
hi guys, I don't want to make the Vox bad, I'm asking because I had the same issue with HTC Hermes, which was also quite ok after I disabled the sound. It also depends on how many applications are installed, loaded in memory, how much memory is free etc. But reading one of the serious reviews like the one from mobile-review - I rather ask for opinions of users before I buy it.
Thank you all
Can somebody tell how is it with the mobile office? Is it really not included with Vox as I read also somewhere? And is there a mobile note application synchronizing with Outlook?

You can edit existing documents but you cannot create ones, correct?
How about the notes application - possible to synchronize them with desktop?

Yes it has them...but WM6 does not allow for creation of new items in Office Mobile (although there is a hack to get around that) but I personally find Documents to Go a better offering than what MS gives you. I have word docs sent via email that dont load in Word mobile (on WM5 or WM6) yet have no problem in DTG...
There is also a 3rd party notes app - but no way to Sync to Outlook, thus I use SmartPhoneNotes.

You know...not to go way off topic here, but I thought I was going crazy one night because I could not figure out why there was no Calculator on the VOX...it never crossed my mind that it would be under "Office Mobile".... Since I never go in there with DTG installed - makes no sense at all to me for it to be in there...
My 2 cents

this is really a place one should go to - getting answers by like-minded people.
RE notes / synchronization - you know that there is a new beta out there of phatnotes by phatware? It supports WM6, might be a solution also for the landscape issue with smartphonenotes described by John...?

Didn't know about it to be honest, will have to swing by their site and look it up.
I guess I should note that DTG and Smartphonenotes are landscape aware, I used them just fine on my BlackJack...and I noticed today actually that if you start them in landscape mode they auto-rotate just fine....its only when you start in portrait mode that they go whacky...

The best pdf reader...

Hi guys!
I just bought an HP 514 with Win mobile 6 smartphone... can you help me to find out the best pdf reader for wm6 smartphone?
Thanks!
I convert my PDFs to RepliGo
I convert all my documents and pdfs to RepliGo format. It is the easiest to use on a small screen and document compression is the best. You can print to a RepliGo document on your PC. You can also convert web pages to RepliGo format and it will auto resize large pages to fit a standard document size. It has a text search. The reader on the pda is less than 400K. The reader is free for Windows, PPC, Smartphone, Palm so if you have to share a document you can share the reader.
http://www.cerience.com/products/pro/blackberry/index.htm
hard to say what is the best but there is a reader from adobe itself and i also use MobileXpdf.
Repligo has a big disadvantage.. you dont have your desktop pc with you if you get a mail with a pdf attachment
Where can I download MobileXpdf for WM 6 smartphone?
I can't find it surfing the web...
dont remember where i found it. google found it here for example:

havent checked this, if you dont trust that source give me your mail adress

foxit reader = bet pdf reader on the market.
the projects address
you can download mobilexpdf at
http://www.mobilexpdf.blogspot.com
or by going to
http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/mobilexpdf
PS: when foxit will be better than mobilexpdf, i'll eat it! and by the way... don't you have to pay for foxit reader (mobilexpdf is free/opensource) so not the same category...
(sorry for my english) I will try mobilexpdf, (thanks for your work gciochina). I have tried Foxit and I have uninstall it 5 minutes later. I think that we dont need a pdf reader for see little parts of a document with images, etc... For that we have Adobe Reader LE or PDF to Go, or... but a reader that extracts text from pdfs for read it like .txt or .rtf, .doc, etc... and that it allows that we pruned to read pdf ebooks without any previous transformation.
A couple questions about Adobe Reader LE
1. How do I associate .pdf files to the Adobe Reader LE? The .pdf files have the default icon for unassociated files. I tried using Resco Explorer to associate them with the Reader using "Open with". But... I get an invalid path error every time I click any .pdf file.
2. I got Adobe Reader LE 2.0 from the Extras.zip from one of the 6.0 ROM, is Adobe Reader 2.5 available in the newer ROMs?
Thanks...

Ok... I was testing the new Foxit pdf reader Beta, but was annoyed by the banner that reminds one to register it. I installed MobileXpdf 0.0.6.0 using the cab available at SourceForge and I like what I see. I noticed that it was a little slow. The source for the latest version 0.0.6.2 was available, but there was no cab file availble just the source. McHale, do you know where I can get a cab file for 0.0.6.2 as it "might" fix some of the performance issues I noticed.
Thanks...

I'm using 0.0.6.0. They update CONSTANTLY so 0.0.6.2 or newer should be available soon.
The reason it is slow on your HP is because is the phone itself is slow. It takes me forever to edit contacts and do other simple things...
But, slowness aside, I really like the HP 510. For someone who isn't a power user of Windows Mobile applications besides the basics, it is perfect.

MobileX is better than adobe. Thanks. But personally pdf's just plain suck period on my shadow. I installed acrobat pro just to convert pdf's to html which works much faster. Foxit in ANY shape sucks balls. (try pdf-xchange viewer)
A tip for those using adobe reader le version 2.5 to read pdf files
To make the text fit to page and great to read, try adjusting the zoom level to 100 % or 105% using the plus or minus buttons [or from the menu], next click on 'tools' [ bottom left hand corner of screen], select 'view' then select 'reflow', the result should be an improved layout of page info and text, the only thing is you will have to go thru this process everytime you open a new pdf file.
'Reflow' in Adobe reader was the clincher for me - it officially does everything I need a PDF reader to do.
Opens large files quickly
Reflow for easier on-screen reading (reading that technical manuals that I do needs some level of formatting retained)
Rotate for landscape reading
It's fast (I quickly got sick of MobileX's "Rendering page" message)
I only wish that the reflow option could be set up as a preference...
I'm chuffed that I finally found a way to carry lots of books around with me in a readable format!
Adobe Reader LE 2.5

Adobe Reader LE 2.5 is pretty fast.
It would be even better if some one could find a way to disable the splash screen and improve loading time.

Best ROM; I have tryed some

Hi
I don't understand as everybody consider a ROM as good if it is disable to run properly Adobe Reader 2.0.
I use a lot the Adole Reader 2.0 which has reflow mode, essential feature to read pdf documents e.g. pdf electronic books and I use the Tytn II to read books. As all you know, Adobe Reader LE has not this feature and so it is useless.
For instance, in Schap 4.31 and 4.30 there is a conflit between Adobe Reader 2.0 and Task manager (X button). If we open the Adobe Reader 2.0 and open a pdf document, it works. However when we click in the cross X to close the Adobe Reader, Tytn II crash with these ROMs. We can avoid this closing the Adobe using the command Exit; however this is not practical.
For me, by default, Schap's ROMs have the best looking.
I use the Task Manager (X button) configured to close the program, not minimize it.
- Original HTC and Sleuth 1.0 ROMs have not this problem and so I use Sleuth 1.0.
- Q-mobile 1.2 ROM has only one background, it is disable to configure automatically the phone provider, it has no game neither voice dial. It has a interesting GPS tool to observe satellites before start Tomtom and TCPMP by default.
- Schap’s 4.30 has the problem mentioned above, but has Advanced configuration tool. It has not Java and Voice dial neither GPS tool.
- Schap’s 4.31 has a better Advanced configuration tool and it has a interesting GPS tool. It has not Java and Voice dial.
- Jack’s 1.1a has a lot of interesting programs, but it’s a little different of normal way to work with the Tytn II and we need to learn a little more about this ROM. It has a program called Multipad that is fantastic to write notes by hand with a thin line and quick to write. However the physical keyboard has some symbols changed of position. It has by default Battery status and Resco Explorer v6.17 what is good. It has lot of games but only two backgrounds. It has no X button and we need to install other like magic button. This ROM, however, it seems a little unstable.
- Laurentius26 v_1 has Schap’s Advanced configuration tool v1.1. It has the same problem with Adobe Reader 2.0; after close this program, Start icon crash. Resco Explorer doesn’t run properly in this ROM; this is also a problem with others ROMs; to observe this problem, try to see Windows files using the up and down arrows; it is very slow to do this.
Thanks very much.

Not to be rude and nothing against you, but, your post just cracked me up man!
Am not sure what your point is here but I sure hope it's not being hung up on whether Adobe Reader works perfectly on a ROM or not. All of the other apps that you're talking about are available as cab files so you can install them as you wish on your "perfect" ROM...
Mmm... I don't have any problem with running Resco Explorer on my build
Adobe Reader I took out and replaced with PocketXPDF which runs much better then Adobe in my opinion.
Do you use latest builds of your software?

As I stated in my notes, my rom is targeted for ATT Tilt (since this is what I have), and keyboard mapping to HTC variant (e.g. Tytn II) is just a removal of one registry key.
Background? Different people just have different taste on it so I just take it out from the rom and let people add whatever they like later.
For X Button, HTC's one is probably the worest I ever use. User unfriendly, too less function for too many memory use compare to Wisbar, SPB close button, WKTASK, ... etc. BTW, QuickMenu in my rom has this feature too.
Unstable? Can you give more detail?
For PDF file, you may want to check out Piscel Browser. Much better than Pocket Adobe IMHO.
There is no best or perfect rom (unless you build one for yrself). Only ROMs that will serve some people the most.
To get the perfect ROM
Hi Sherpa, Moi5508 and ROMs makers
Excuse me to insist.
I wish to thank very much to all ROMs makers. My goal is indeed to give my contribute to get a perfect ROM. Unfortunately I don’t know to make a ROM.
I know we can customize any ROM of Tytn II with cabs. However, for me, makes no sense to have by default in a ROM a Task Manager (X button) to close the programs and we can not use it; we need instead to install other like e.g. Magic Button because the default X button crash Tytn II.
In my job, in a Project department in a shipyard, we need to read lot of reports, rules, catalogues, books, etc, which usually are in a pdf format and Word format. That´s the reason why Adobe Reader 2.0 with reflow feature is so important.
I think that Tytn II is to use mainly for professional purpose like a PC as it is a Pocket PC, not only like a phone or a GPS, and so on.
Lot of members are preoccupied with amount of memory and request Big Storage taking off important software and lot of customize possibility, resulting in a big work and time, loading cabs, installing and testing them.
I think that, even if we don’t use them usually, a good ROM must have by default, software we normally have in a PC.
Original HTC ROM, unfortunately has bugs, but it has practically most of the important software we need to use in a professional environment, less the Adobe Reader 2.0, I don’t know why as it’s free.
For me makes no sense to reduce the capability of Tytn II. On the contrary we must to increase its possibility e.g. with a decent Internet Explorer and others like a PC. For instance we need Java to install mini Opera.
Thanks
Cribeiro
Hi Laurentius26 - PocketXPDF & Resco
Hi Laurentius26
Thanks very much for your answer.
Resco Explorer runs well in your ROM when folder has few files. At Windows folder which has thousands of files is noticeable what I mentioned, it’s slow using the up and down arrows; at list in my Tytn II WWE Europe one.
I don’t know PocketXPDF. Can you please tell me if this one has reflow mode (to read a pdf it only move up and down because reflow split a long text line in several small ones that match display size.
Please tell us the site to find it.

Hi jackleung

As I said, your ROM is very interesting as it has lot of useful software by default; as it is a little unusual I feel that I need more time to learn to use it; may be I was using wrongly the software and I found a little instability, my fault; as I use Tytn II in a professional environment, like a PC, I have few time to learn using it and test all features.
Multipad is fantastic; please tell us the site where is the cab.

For multipad, you can just copy the exe file from my rom, no cab or installation is needed. For Piscel, I am not sure what is reflow mode, but you drag, scroll, zoom in/out with just yr finger motion. (This feature is long before Iphone or HTC FLoflow exist). U can check out this site for detai: http://www.picsel.com/index.php/solutions/view/C11/ For cab, you probably can search this site or google for it.
In the Windows directory it's always slow reading, that's not a problem of Resco. If you use the default explorer you have the same issue.
PocketXPDF you can find here:

All info can be found there as well.

In the Windows directory it's always slow reading, that's not a problem of Resco. If you use the default explorer you have the same issue.

But you will see a BIG different if you need to sort the file, resco return almost instantly and Windows could takes couple mins to finished.
For Resco, it make a big different if you check "hide file in rom" (why we need to see files that we can't change anyway?)
There are a few PDF viewers out there for the PDA. To be honest I include Adobe LE in mine because I was comparing it with the older Clearvue--and Adobe LE is INCREDIBLY faster on large document loads and viewing than Clearview was.
There is now two others (the XPDF mentioned here and another that escapes me at the moment) which people claim to be superior to even Adobe LE. One day I'll get around to testing them and see if that is true for speed in a large document as well (the most useful to me).
But right now I'm happy with the default feature set of my ROM, everything works together without crashing and people can easily add specific things they like to their device to make it run the way they want. The next planned update of Q-Mobile won't be until HTC releases an update that fixes some major issues (better drivers for the MSM7200 to improve battery life, video performance, etc). Or windows mobile 6.1 professional becomes available

after testing almost all the cooked roms I actually settled down on yours! Thank you again!
Adobe Reader 2.0 reflow feature is indispensable
Hi
I know ClearView and Adobe Reader LE (Light Edition). These pdf readers are useless as they have not reflow mode.
Adobe Reader 2.0 is free and has reflow mode.
This feature takes e.g. a A4 text size, e.g. letter size 10 or 12, and in each A4 line, it split the long original line is several small lines in order each small line match the Pocket PC display size. In this way, to read the text, we only need to move the text up or down; it is not necessary to move the text to left or right.
Furthermore by each click in the D-pad it moves a complete pocket display page up or down permiting to read a document or a book in a very confortable way.
Adobe Reader full version compared to LE version is HUMONGOUS! Blah!
PocketXpdf is worst than Adobe Reader 2.0
I gave it a try to PocketXpdf and this is worst than Adobe Reader 2.0 (don't make confusion with Adobe Reader LE which is very bad).
PocketXpdf is slow, it has a little feature like reflow from Adobe Reader 2.0, but it's slow, and the pages scrolling is very bad, when compared with Adobe Reader 2.0.
I please ask to ROM makers that (when they put by default the X button from HTC (Task Manager), and the user configure it to close the programs) please test in their ROMs, if Adobe Reader 2.0 when it is closed using the X upper right display corner icon, doesn't crash Tytn II.
I remenber that HTC original and Sleuth 1.0 ROMs works perfectly in this point, and so there must be something in others ROMs to appear the problem.
I would like very much to use others of your ROMs, whose are fantastics, and I'm disable due to this problem.
Thanks

From my point of view the PDF readers in cooked ROMs are there just to be able to read some PDF if needed, not to do supa-dupa magic with it. It's your option to install different PDF reader that suits you well.
You are saying that after closing the Adobe Reader (full) it crashes your phone.
Have you tried different Task Manager?
I'm using Q-Mobile 1.2 as in my opinion it is closest to the stock ROM but with MUCH better improvements, speed and stability.
Try this one and try installing different task managers, maybe you will find one that fits you best without crashes.
My 2 cents...
where can i find different task managers... i also want to use my tilt to read ebooks and i understand where he is coming from. i would love to get my rom'd tilt to run 2.0 or even find half way decent TTS software to read it to me while i drive... i have already converted the last 4 books i have read to word using my adobe 7.0 pro but that is a pain to have to do before every book.

[Q] Mango IE9 in page search

Hi all,
there is a way to search a word in a page in IE9 mobile in mango?
In previous release there was a entry in "..." menu.
Thanks
Bye
I haven't found one, and I really miss it.
IE9 WP7 mango 'find on page'
I don't understand Microsoft sometimes. Why would they remove such a basic feature? I literally use this feature every time I use a browser on any platform when I'm looking for something. The absence of this feature coupled with no word wrap reflow really make the browser a downgrade from Opera on my old touch pro 2. The browser is slicker but without these features I won't use it much. Maybe they are intentionally trying to make people not want to use the browser for reading- silly.
Similarly, where is the button next in IE 9 in mango beta 2 (maybe it's still there in mango rtm)
