Is there really a big delay when opening/closing the keyboard? - HTC Vox

yes every day there is the same question and thing I'm doing, looking to the web for news about new MS mobile devices..and now thinking about buying the Vox. But the only thing so far I couldn't live with is that there should be big delay when opening or closing the keyboard.
How do you rate this?

Its a few seconds...maybe more if you have many apps running in the backround, but then everything runs slow when thats happening on any WM device... dosent bother me...
Regards - John

To be honest in my opinion its not as bad as other make it seem, as long you keep tabs on the programs you have running in the background every now and not running with only 1mb free memory then you shouldn't have a problem. One tip you can try is disabling the sound it plays when switching views in the settings. Made the switch slightly faster in my opinion.

Without the Sound it is maybe 2 times faster..

thanks guys for your prompt answers!!
Do you have a clou whether the important progs like PocketInformant or AgendaOne are running without problems in landscape mode?

I use AgendaOne and I haev not had an issue with it switching orientation. However Documents to Go has a problem as does SmartPhoneNotes - they will not fill the screen, you get a scroll-bar on the righe, pretty much making it still portrate..

hi John
I thought one doesn't need smartphonenotes anymore as WM6 should have its own notes taking application?
As well as Office Mobile (doc, xls, ppt) should be on board, isn't ?

I really don't see what the fuss is about speed of the screen rotation. Its not like it takes several minutes. Approx 1-3 seconds depending on what's running in the background is perfectly fine.

hi guys, I don't want to make the Vox bad, I'm asking because I had the same issue with HTC Hermes, which was also quite ok after I disabled the sound. It also depends on how many applications are installed, loaded in memory, how much memory is free etc. But reading one of the serious reviews like the one from mobile-review - I rather ask for opinions of users before I buy it.
Thank you all
Can somebody tell how is it with the mobile office? Is it really not included with Vox as I read also somewhere? And is there a mobile note application synchronizing with Outlook?

You can edit existing documents but you cannot create ones, correct?
How about the notes application - possible to synchronize them with desktop?

Yes it has them...but WM6 does not allow for creation of new items in Office Mobile (although there is a hack to get around that) but I personally find Documents to Go a better offering than what MS gives you. I have word docs sent via email that dont load in Word mobile (on WM5 or WM6) yet have no problem in DTG...
There is also a 3rd party notes app - but no way to Sync to Outlook, thus I use SmartPhoneNotes.

You know...not to go way off topic here, but I thought I was going crazy one night because I could not figure out why there was no Calculator on the VOX...it never crossed my mind that it would be under "Office Mobile".... Since I never go in there with DTG installed - makes no sense at all to me for it to be in there...
My 2 cents
John

this is really a place one should go to - getting answers by like-minded people.
RE notes / synchronization - you know that there is a new beta out there of phatnotes by phatware? It supports WM6, might be a solution also for the landscape issue with smartphonenotes described by John...?

Didn't know about it to be honest, will have to swing by their site and look it up.
I guess I should note that DTG and Smartphonenotes are landscape aware, I used them just fine on my BlackJack...and I noticed today actually that if you start them in landscape mode they auto-rotate just fine....its only when you start in portrait mode that they go whacky...
Take care - John

Well, I have been saying that for ages, you are the first one who share this with me!
Yep, it is too slowwwwww with me too, but I found a little trick to avoid that!
In the Screen Mirror, go to "Refresh", set the "Predefined Settings" to "PIM, Word, Database". This will make Screen Mirror quite fast and acceptable.
If you set it to be "Photo/Presentation", then the imate will be too slowwwww, while if you set it to be "Animation" or "MPEG video", then the Screen Mirror will never work again!!! and there is no way to use it or make a presentation. I had to Hard-Reset my iamte to change the settings to "PIM, Word, Database"!!
Any way, I was able to make a prsentation on the setup of "PIM, Word, Database", but can not make the display in landscape!!, or, I can run the show in the normal portrait display, using "stretch" option in "layout" but it looks ugly!!
What did you do in this regard?
Luckily, I didn't buy the backpack that I planned to buy soon.
That means I've better to use my notebook to do presentation.
Thanks guys for your comments.

The presentation software that comes with the backPack is fantastic. Do not confuse it with Screen Mirror which is the apllication that simply projects your entire PDA screen. Screen Mirror is certainly handy for training in PDA software applications but not used for powerpoint presentations.
One feature the BackPack presentation software has that the laptop does not is the ability to project only the presentation slides (via the lcd projector) but display both the speakers notes and the presentation slides on the screen of the PPC. I find this very handy as I use the speakers notes for questions and answers as part of my test for understanding slides.
Ed
I guess "Chris" and most users (including me) are looking for Powerpoint presentations, if you only need the BackPack for presentation, it will not help at all!! unless you need it to use CF Card!, then it might be useflul to have it, and as you "Ed" mentioned, to make a presentation about xda, to project the data, then yes, it is good to have as well.
Note that Windows 2003SE (2nd Edition) has good features that will help in presentations! (the Landscape View and 640X480 resolution)! I am waiting for it to update my imate and then try BackPack for presentation once again!
Sorry GoldenSands I don't understand
I think the backPack works great for powerpoint presentations, that's the main thing I use it for. I have the presentations saved either on an SD card or a CF if I have to take a lot of large files. But even from the SD or main memory the presentation software works a treat. The backpacks battery is smaller but it does prolong battery life and that is a bonus too. Without the BackPack I cannot use my XDA II for presentations.
What do you mean
if you only need the BackPack for presentation, it will not help at all!!

Sorry not trying to be silly I just miss your point.
Ed
Dear Ed, may be I did not express my thoughts very well. When I did a presentation using the backpack, I had the following problems:
1- Imate is slow.
2- Presnetation is in portrate, not in landscape (as normal Power Point presentation).
3- Small size (small resolution) not in 640X480.
4- If I use Stretch Option (to get large projection), then quality is poor.
Now, taking above points into consideration, presentaion done through backpack is not powerful and I can not do any presentaion, although I need it badly, I do about 3 to 4 presentaions a week!
That's what I meant by buying it for presentaions (to do Powerpoint ones) will not help since I have to design the Powerpoint presentation in certain size to fit the backpack limitations.
My questions:
1- Are you able to make the presentaion in Landscape?
2- Were you able to use 640X480 resolution?
3- How fast is your imate or xda2 when you use Speed Mirror?
4- What is the version of Speed Mirror you have? (mine is Ver 2.01)
5- In VGA Refresh Settings, do you set it to be "PIM, Word, Database"? or something else?
Regarding the battery, I agree with you, it is a small added value component (600 mAm) only, but it is good to have any way.

OK, seems like you do things different than me.
Firstly I do not use ScreenMirror for presentations, I use ClearVue Presentation Suite v2.3.377 which came on the CD with my backpack.
Presentations work at "normal" speed with transition effects etc. And as I said earlier I do like ability to see the speakers notes on my XDA II but only project the slides to the LCD projector.
Next in answer to your questions above.
Q1. Yes (Using ClearVue)
Q2, Yes (Using ClearVue), 640 x 480 x 64k @ 85Hz or 800 x 600 x 64K @ 60Hz
Q3. As I said I do not use SpeedMirror for presentations. By the way, my Mirror application is called ScreenMirror v2.01, NOT SpeedMirror, are they different? Anyway, when I use ScreenMirror yes it can be slow but is OK for how to teach using PPC applications etc and it only operates in Portrait. I do not use it for power point slide shows.
Q4. When I use it, and that is not often, I usually have it on PIM, Word, Database. For example It has been OK on how to teach people to use SpriteBackupPremium at a PPC user group meeting. No need for landscape as it is an application to Mirror the PPC screen, that is it only projects the PPC exactly as it looks in on your hand unit. That is why it is good for teaching how to use the PPC applications.
Hope this helps.

Dear Ed,
Yep, I guess I was totally not aware about making the presentation through the ClearVue PPT directly (without using the Screen Mirror)!
I went to "Setup" / "Preferences" in ClearVue, then was surprised about the option that allows me to use External Video Adaptor! That was the reason; I was using Screen Mirror (not Speed Mirror).
Thanks for your advice, that's the benefit of this forum, we learn from each other. However, I need a little advice from you, when I choose to use the "External Video Adaptor" in ClearVue, using VGA as an Output. Then try to open a presentation, an error message appears saying "Another Presentation viewer is running, please close the other viewer and try again". While there is nothing else is running. I have even re-installed the VGA Package!
Well, one time after several trials, I got different message: "The External display is in use by another application. Would you like to continue to use the external display?" whatever I chose, nothing appears in the screen.
Note that I am making all these tests using the Monitor, not the projector, do you think this make a different?

Yep, it helped a lot. Please let me know if you had experienced such problems with the imate and BackPack.
Thank you..
Well I'm glad my coments helped and we are both talking the same language now
I just tried using ClearVue and the backpack connected to my PC monitor rather than my LCD projector and it still worked fine for me. No errors like you mention in your post. So what you are doing should work.
I presume you tried performing a softreset with backpack and monitor connected, then before starting any other applications load clearvue, open your presentation file, then tap on the slideshow icon?
Not sure what else to suggest but please post your results.
BTW, where abouts in Saudi are you? (from your flag) I worked there for a couple of years about 7 years ago. I was in Al Jubail but managed to explore the entire country including the empty quarter. Had a great time and still have some friends there.

I was away for a short business trip. However, I was trying to do more tests and more research. I still get the same error, but what surprised me more today, even if I try to open any presentation using ClearVeu (selecting the option of using External VGA) while the BackPack is not attached; I still get the same error. I also connected the imate to my projector, it works OK with Screen Mirror, but never worked with the ClearVue. I did a lot of trials and restarts.
I also did a little research, and I found this useful link. But I guess I am alone getting this error!!
http://www.ppcw.net/index.php?itemid=1916
Remaining one more test to do, I will use the imate of my brother-in-low, I am going to install the Screen Mirror Software along with ClearVue (of course) and will try to run a presentation, lets see what error we get! hope it works, if so, it means then my imate (or Windows) might have a problem since BackPack works OK.
By the way, what Rom version are you using, is it 1.72 or 1.66?

That's nice, Juabial is not far from where do I live. I live now in Dhahran (almost 100Km away from Jubail). I have not been in Empty quarter or even a lot of places, except major cities in Kingdom!!
I'm using the 1.66 ROM , standard rom from when I purchased the unit. I have been happy with it so did not upgrade to another.
I'm surprised with your error and I do hope you can get it sorted out as the ClearVue really is fantastic software.

Mmmm, you gave me a good hint again! I will test ClearVue with BackPack and try to make a presentation on 2 imates, one with 1.72 ROM and another one with 1.66 ROM. If it worked, then will see away to downgrade mine to 1.66!! I will try to do this test ASAP. Thanks a lot dear.
Bug in ClearVue
I'm having the same bug with ClearVue with the message "another presentation viewer is running, ...".
I visited the Westtek website and found that there's an updated release of the software. They want money for the update.
I think that the whole thing is offensive. Selling an untested application is offensive, asking for more money to fix it is offensive. I wish I could throw the product back in the face of the Dubai Duty Free employee.
BTW, no one should downgrade their ROM to get one crappy application to function.
Just wondered if you guys had seen this page, on O2 site for a ClearVue update for 1.72

I don't have a backpack, so I can't test it but it might solve your problems!

Replies regarding the Presentation Viewer Bug
Club i-Mate:
Thank you for writing in, I personally tested the i-mate back pack with version 1.72 and did not come up with any error messages.
Westtek:
I have not been able to reproduce the problem. Please try the following and let me know at what step you get the error message.
1. Soft reset your device
2. Open ClearVue Presentation
3. Open a Presentation file
4. Run a Slide Show on your pocket PC (without configuring external video)
5. Exit the Slide Show and exit ClearVue Presentation.
6. Plug in the backpack and open ClearVue Presentation
7. Open a Presentation file
8. Configure the External Video Adapter in ClearVue Presentation (do not open the mirror software)
9. Run a slide show
I tried the steps and the problem is still there.
Now I'm out of ways to get help and being in the Middle East, there's no way I can get my money back (no one protects consumers here).
Update to Back Pack Driver
After having denied that they had a problem with the dirver, Club i-mate have posted an update:
http://www.clubimate.com/Support/BackpackDriver.sa.CAB
They never bothered themseleves to reply to my emails, I found the update by chance.
If the above fix doesn't solve the back pack problem, try hard resetting. Hard reseting worked for me even without the updated driver.

Keyboard evolution

Guys it's just me or it is a fact that the progress of windows mobile is really slow?
I mean there are several versions of windows mobile, 6.0 got our before 5.0 was even running well enough (not to mention several bugs in 5.0 that were barely fixed) and I wonder: wouldn't it be better to stick to an OS version for a longer period of time and make it run really good?
I won't go into a debate mac vs pc or anything of this kind, but isn't the standard windows mobile interface a bit boring? I like the iPhone for the innovative interface and design only, or another model I've seen m8 from meizu.
Something should change, not just a fancy gradient in the titlebar and the menubar!!!!!
I have a problem with the keyboards too. The MS sip is the same since 2002 pocket pcs!!! And that is really a lot of time of using the same cra.ppy system, and forgive me for overreacting but I think entering texts is a main concern, we all use these devices mainly as communicators or for various information storage that needs to be edited, moved from a location to another an all these actions require user input...
I know there are lots of experienced users on this forum, so this is a call to all of them , I need their suggestions in what would be the best choice for a text-input software for Pocket PCs?
I was using the SPB keyboard for about 2 years now I really like it, it's just that it covers all my text (yeah, I know it's fulscreen ), and I would like to try some similar variants: concern #1 : it must have big keys or it's useless to me.
Thanks for your time, everyone!
I'm using ZTA4 SIP, it's mainly for Chinese input but also can be used for English typing.
Cheers,
Vibranze

Palm OS:s Calendar on Windows Mobile?

ive tried so many different calendar applications for ppc but none of them really can take Palms place...
wonder if someone can make a rip of Calendar from Palm Os. Im already enjoying Treos great threaded sms.
I've noticed that the PalmOS Agendus calendar program is now available on PocketPC, so perhaps that brings a bit of the PalmOS style calendar to the Windows world?
Peter, thank for the tip.
Checked it out. It doesnt look as Palm Calendar at all. Its just...too much.

i guess ive become one of those nostalgic ex Palm users nagging about WM.
Yet theres still hope. Im sure someone can make a copy someday.

Nik, yes - I understand. My wife uses a Palm Treo 680 and really likes the calendar app. It does look good, and fast. I've never cared for the WM calendar app much myself. The calendar entry form is OK, it is the views that I don't like much. I tried Pocket Informant but (IMhO) it is way too complex for my needs.
I use SBSH's PocketBreeze now. It is not a calendar but rather a Today screen plug in for the Calendar. So you still use the default Calendar to add appts, but you can use PB to view everything. It is quite powerful yet simple.

My Mobiler alternative?

For some reason, I can't use my keyboard to input any data through My Mobiler, nor can I use the copy/paste feature. My keyboard only works on the home screen for dialling numbers!?
So basically, is there another way to connect to my Vox (6.1) using my PC?
Is there a VNC server for the phone?
Shame My Mobiler doesn't work. It's great to use, but keyboard input is my main concern.
A program called True connect works perfectly but it's ugly and costs £15!!
Thanks

Any RSS Reader for my Pocket PC?

Dear all,
I am running a Samsung i780 with WM6.1. I'd like to be able to read some RSS feeds, and have had some success in the past in using the free pRSSreader. That worked really well, but there is a feature missing that I would really like to have. I'm hoping that someone here might be able to recommend a suitable reader.
The problem with pRSSreader, was that I'd read postings that I thought were interesting and then flag them to read later. However, the program wouldn't keep them for later - instead it would ditch all the postings irrespective of whether they had been flagged or not.
So I'd like a way to either make a favourite posting list or save postings that I think are interesting, so I can read through them again at a later date.
Any ideas if there are some readers on the market with this functionality?
Many thanks,
Tom.
There's one called SpeeedReader that's worth checking out if you're a Google Reader user -- it hooks into your Google Reader account so your desktop and pocket feeds stay nicely in-sync.
The only problem is that it doesn't support finger scrolling and can be a bit crashy (at least on my Kaiser).
Thanks for the suggestions!

Click to collapse

I went for YomoMedia Reader in the end, as it allows one to save
interesting posts whilst on the train and since its a web app (with a
PPC application), you can then view them on your PC in their full
glory when you get into work!
Cheers, Tom.
