What do you think of the Samsung Galaxy?

Hi, I don't want be rude and talking badly to the Samsung Galaxy but a new device with Android OS that has only a 3.2Camera and no- Flash seems bit absurd don't you think? The name has nothing to do with the real world...a galaxy or a star usually is very bright...with this phone you cannot even make photo or video in the night time...mmmm....not a galaxy whatsoever................

All I can say is: Stay with HTC models!

But the procesor and the chipset is a lot better then the crappy qualcomm. If only HTC start to use different processors.

Are you sure about that? I have an Htc Diamond 2, a Sony Xperia X1, and Htc Hero, they are perfect ! before that a Samsung D900...it was fine...nice phone but I could not do it the things I do with Htc or Sony.

u cannot compare phones with different OS, and I dont know what chip was used in D900. I am talking about Snapdragon(Qualcomm) vs. Hummingbird(Samsung).

have you seen the galaxy videos? it takes like 5+ secs to actually getting in to the gallery after pressing it. it seems kinda slow to me. unless that's because of the software being beta or something, that's slow to me.
@ qualcomm vs hummingbird: qualcomm will come out soom enough with dualcores.

1. seen that, especially the "Lady" that was clicking on icons like she was mad and launching few programs at the same time, but who knows.
and after qualcomm will come with dualcore, samsung will come with better dualcore.
I think there were some benchmarks comparisons, will try to find them.

Hello,
i was actually wondering if anybody knows how to Mod correctly a galaxy.
I have a galaxy from the middle east which does not come with marketplace. the I7500JVIL2. I have flashed it using ODIN to another rom I7500xiik, however many options stopped working like sdcard, camera, etc... i flashed it to 1.6, camera started working but sdcard still doesn't.
So, I was wondering if there is any way to get this fixed. I need sdcard so that I flash using recovery mod. I'm trying to flash it back to the original build I7500JVIL2, hoping this will make everything work again.
Do you think this is a good solution? Are there suggestions you can make on another build to use that has marketplace and everything working on the phone.
Sorry if I posted in the wrong place. I couldn't find anything regarding galaxy on XDA and I love this forum. I habe been able to succesfully mod my g1 through this forum.

I just realized that you are talking about the galaxy(i7500) and not about galaxy s(i9000).
BTW galaxys, you should sue samsung for using your nick.

Personally I wouldn't touch a Samsung with a bargepole, I have owned a few Samsung phones, where the phones tend to be okay they do not support them at all with firmware updates, they have a remarkable release rate of phones and rather than supporting the current ones they just release a new one!

Yeah your right only the name is cool....I don't know why people don't pay attention to the market...We have around in Uk at list 10 top of the range mobiles, starting with HTC HD2, Htc Desire, Htc Legend, Nexus One, Diamond 2, Motorola Milestone, Nokia n900, Omnia2 and so on....Why buying the Galaxy?. I will give you another example: Which would you buy between Htc Desire and Sony Xperia X10???...Of course the Desire!!! they have the same price but Desire is on another planet: Android 2.1, Multitouch, better Keyboard, better interface...Maybe..the only thing Xperia X10 has better then Desire is the Camera that's all...Xperia X10 is basically a 2009 device sorry arrived to late!

Me to!! Can't live with what's in the HD Mini, but most certainy I can live with the hardware. Anybody knowing how to androidize it?

I bought HD mini due to the outlook, size and weight!
Legend have poor taste and the shape is not good to store in pocket.
Frankly, WM is more easy to copy and edit the Word/Excel files from PC and I can check some files out of office easily.
And I just seek for any solutions for multi-boot with Android OS as Android looks better and I just want to try it and need not to buy another phone.
Cos I have one iPhone already, too many mobile phones~

When the evo rom arrives, it will be ported to hd2. I find it logical that it will be a android powered hd mini in the future. Then, it would be rather easier than now to create a custom android rom for hd mini But I should stick to reality.
The dual boot app for winmo devices isn't written for hd minis hvga resolution.
But hey, the diamond 2 or touch pro 2 does not have a android twin to take a rom from. I will put up a request for hd mini support for the android dual boot app.
The hd mini would have been a great android device!

Good news is that a genious has managed to get the linux bootloader to work on hd2 and playing a 720p video. An Android port will soon come to hd2 even without the evo rom
Hopefully the kernel system on hd2 isn`t all that different from the hd mini

core of haret is a file called setup.txt where are stored parameters with rom/ram addresses, only thing to do is know this addresses.........

I have great news for all you people living in the US: Like the evo 4g with sprint(android version of hd2). At&t have released the htc aria, a true android clone of the hd mini. Just google it for more info.

Call Recording

Hi, as you know HTC (and all others) disallow call recording in their phones since the times of Windows Mobile 2003. This problem is now on the Android devices too. There are many opened issues on Google code for this problem, that gained a lot of stars, especially this one code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=2117 (sorry, I'm new and not allowed to post links)
There are workarounds like recording trough loudspeaker, but as you know this is far from useful.
However, there is no official answer from Google about this "issue". However, last week the Koreans released a ROM for Samsung Galaxy S, that has built-in native call recorder.
This is from the Samsung's Hub:
Samsung has released a new update for South Korean Galaxy S (SHW-M110S) owners. The update DH09 is not a Froyo update but it does bring worthy additions to the handset. Few visible features are the inclusion of Swype keyboard, ability to record conversations and an app to detects the slope of the magnetic field sensor.
Other than that, the DH09 features RAM management, includes a 3G data widget, downloadable fonts and improves on many other fronts like Allshare, Google Maps software, call quality etc.
The update is available via Kies.

Could you explain me where exactly is the problem for successful two-way call recording? Some say it's in the hardware, other think it's in the ROMs of the manufactures or in Android in general. However in Android emulators it works perfectly!

Anyone? Any answer? At least people who hacked WM ROM's to explain me where exactly is the problem for two-way call recording.
Call Recording is something very useful and I think is a "must have" function in today's world. However big companies and carriers are afraid letting people do that for legal reasons. That's why I think they will never allow us to do that out of the box, so we (the users) have to make it reality with custom hacked ROMs, like we did previously for Windows Mobile devices!

The voice streams were handled by the baseband processor, it's that the baseband firmware aren't setup to offer the streams to the application processor that's limiting the ability to truly record a call. The Android system long has the API implemented, but it can do nothing in this case.
I remember there was an explanation in the Google code issue report mentioned above.

Since the baseband firmware is close sourced and available in binary only, I doubt if the brilliant hackers here can do anything about this.
So, get a Galaxy S (the true one, not even those US variants) if you really want this feature.

Thanks for the reply. So, the bad guy is the baseband processor. iPhone guys hack the baseband processor of the iPhone to unlock it for different carriers. So, I guess it's doable to hack the firmware for two-way recording too.

Many call recorders can record both-way, but only with the use of speakerphone. I suspect it's the same for TotalRecall, judging by the ratings of the 14-day demo (http://www.appbrain.com/app/total-recall-call-recorder/com.killermobile.totalrecall.trial)...?

OK, does somebody tested the Galaxy S with TotalRecall or other call recording software? Is it working out of the box or do I have to preflash the ROM with the korean's one? And if I do, could I continue to use my phone normally and in English language?

No, it's not available in Froyo. This is only for Koreans. However the important thing here is that CALL RECORDING IS POSSIBLE on Galaxy S. As you stated in your first post, to record a call Android needs access to the baseband processor. Galaxy S uses own CPU called S5PC110 (ARM Cortex A8) with built-in baseband processor, which is different from the baseband that is used in the new HTC devices, SE Xperia and Droid. As we all know these devices doesn't work with the call recording apps on the Market. Samsung Galaxy S has really good chances to work properly with these apps!
SO, SOMEBODY PLEASE TEST!

Nice! However for the EPIC STUPIDITY of the most users who gave low app rating, the author unpublished it from Market.
His app clearly shows that two-way call recording IS POSSIBLE, even on certain hardware and rooted Android. The author notes that his app only works on Hero and Magic. They use Qualcomm® MSM7000 and MSM7200, probably with the same baseband processor and he found a way to access it. I will try to contact him for more info and I hope some source code...

I tried some apps like Ultimate Voice Recorder, Total Recall, Call Recorder, they all pick up sounds from the second you press dial so that you hear on the recording the phone ringing at the other side, and they stop a few seconds after the conversation starts. I cold hear on the recordings bouth sides, but no recording is over 10 seconds, no matter what settings I choosed. I didn't use the speaker mode.
Maybe some files need to be run as administrator...don't know... I'm new to android and don't know much about linux.
The other apps that claim to be able to record calls are designed for Android 1.6 so it may be possible but not with 2.1 or 2.2
As far as I understood from what I've read, the korean version of I9000 has also a different hardware not just firmware, so it might be more than just a software adjustment needed.

I presume you use Galaxy S, right? That what you said is really interesting! The fact that recordings contain both sides is very encouraging! The 10 seconds bug I guess is due to some rights or something. I don't own Galaxy S to do further investigation of this problem, but I hope somebody who own it and is deep in Android to do it.
I don't think the Koreans version has different hardware. At least it uses the same CPU, and that means the same baseband processor.

could the magic combination be the latest Gingerbread + FFC?
One of the advantages to the latest Ginger, if I recall correctly, was native APIs for a front camera (until now, apps had to be coded for specific camera devices- that's why some video chat apps only supported some hardware).
Are these maybe the only devices running the latest Google update that happen to sport a front camera?

Just occurred to me- Nexus S 4G isn't working. Nexus S GSM unlocked is.
Maybe the reason for these specific devices is Skype still has some kind of contract with Verizon for Droid video calling?
I recall Skype video on the Thunderbolt being an exclusive Android offering which VZ apparently paid for. Maybe Skype is allowed to offer Android for other non-US carrier affiliated devices? As far as I know, none of the phones offered are available through a national carrier here, and all have a front facing camera and the latest Gingerbread OS. Maybe I found the pattern?
Anyway, that being said, unlike the thunderbolt version which was heavily tied to that hardware, I bet we can crack this baby open to work on other Ginger devices at least!

From what I recall, Gtablet and CM7 don't work together nicely on the camera side of things.
Maybe try Vegan GE? I don't have it installed now to check.

That was with cm7 not cm7.1 rc the camera issues were resolved.
BTW I have the same error as the atrix guy

As you might know there are millions of ARMv6-based devices in the world, and many developers are trying to prolong their life porting latest Android Ice Cream Sandwich to them.
Last time we asked you to release Adreno 2xx driver updates for ARMv6-based chipsets MSM7225 and MSM7227. And Qualcomm has released the update which is really greatly appriciated. (http://www.groubal.com/ics-drivers-compiled-for-armv6-from-qualcomm-update-drivers-released/)
But now we stuck at another point and we couldn't proceed any farther without the help of this great company.
I'm talking about OpenMAX Integration Layer update (core & codecs) for our devices. It is used for hardware-accelerated video recording and playback, image capturing, camera controls etc. Now we are able to use only software "acceleration" for that, which makes device almost useless for many things. It was present in Gingerbread, but it has lower API version, so we can't just use it in Ice Cream Sandwich.
Without help of Qualcomm it's nearly impossible to overcome, because our devices uses QDSP5 digital signal processor, which has no publicaly available specs to port OpenMAX by hand.
Qualcomm has also released updated version of the chipset named MSM7227a which has pretty same hardware (QDSP5 too), but ARMv7 core. Devices with MSM7227a are able to run ICS out of box!

Most of them already have a working port of ICS, CM9, AOSP, AOKP etc. Almost everything is working except multimedia hardware acceleration!
So, please Qualcomm, hear our voice again!
Please sign the petition if you have a device that meets one or more of the following:
1. uses ARMv6
2. has an unofficial ICS port (CM9, AOKP, MIUIv4, etc.)
3. does not have an ICS port due to the lack of these drivers
If you have anything you would like to say, please add a comment along with your signature.
Also, please spread the word about this Groubal (in forums, social networking sites, etc.). For example, if you are using some kind of ICS port, you can post in the thread of your rom. Or if there is a Facebook page for your phone, you can post there too.
