How do you update the bootloader? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does the bootloader update when you install a new version of a stock rom such as 2.3.4 or how do you update it?

No, once you unlock it, it's going to stay unlocked unless you do a fastboot oem lock
There is no such thing as updating the bootloader

Not all of us have the official ROM; so that's not an option.
I am running a custom ROM, and I have updated manually the newest Radio. The only thing that is missing is the bootloader. Is there any way to do that?
if you use the search feature, somebody did upload the bootloader.img for 2.3.3
as a last resort, you can download the 2.3.3 stock ROM. extract it and find bootloader.img and flash it via fastboot
edit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11661588&postcount=2596
download bootloader.7z
extract
get bootloader.img
put it in ur /sdk/tools/ folder (yes you have to have the android SDK set up for 2.3.X)
fastboot flash bootloader bootloader.img
Click to collapse
select "reboot bootloader" and you should see the new version of the bootloader
old bootloader:
bootloader I9020XXJK1
new bootloader:
bootloader I9020XXKA3
Nice! Thanks for that!
Currently my bootloader is unlocked. If I flash another bootloader, will it remain unlocked? or it will be locked and I would have to unlock it again?

Yes it will remain unlocked, it'll just simply override your current bootloader with the newer one. I listed above the new and old bootloader to see if it worked.
It wont ever be re-locked unless you type: fastboot oem lock
Yeap, it worked perfectly fine - still unlocked! Thank you very much!

How to relock Bootloader???

Hi all !!!
As soon as I received my ZS551KL, I unlocked bootloader, installed TWRP and rooted it.
I cannot update to Android 8 because my bootloader is unlocked, but I cannot found how to relock it for updating. I have tried fastboot oem lock and fastboot oem relock in fastboot mode without success.
Do you know how to do it?
Thank you so much :good:
You can flash raffyvito's modified Oreo zip, that way you get the stock recovery from which you flash the official Asus zip with the firmware updates, then you flash TWRP again and you're golden. You should check out his thread.
Hi guys. Do we have any news on how to relock the bootloader? Also can someone of you share the stock oreo recovery?

Can't rollback to Android MM to relock bootloader

Hello,
A few days ago I managed to go back to a stock rom from a custom one. I have a FRD-L09432B360 firmware at the moment, but the bootloader is unlocked. I don't remember the code I used to unlock the bootloader, and I'd like to relock the bootloader so I am able to update to the latest firmwares. I've read that by downgrading to Marshmellow the bootloader will relock itself.
I am following this guide to do so, but when I reboot to apply the UPDATE.APP of the rollback package, it get stucks on 5% for a while, and after a few minutes it reboots, leaving me with the same firmware.
Is there something I am doing wrong?
Is there another way to relock the bootloader without the unlocking code?
Thanks a lot,
Mcat
I still haven't been able to fix this issue? Any idea is appreciated, thanks
You don't need to relock the bootloader to update. Use hurupdater

Unlock bootloader v4?

Is there anyway to get an unlocked bootloader? I am still running stock nougat with bootloader v4. Can I flash G930U and unlock bootloader that way? I really just want to install custom ROMS. I have no need for regular root.
bump

Bootloader

Is there a safe way to lock the bootloader for ota updates yet? Waiting to unlock until then.
No, but you can update manually with the stock recovery just by following this instructions. No need for OTA
