Can't push files to /system even though S-OFF?? - HTC Sensation

OK, weird one...
I'm S-OFF, running my own ROM and all going nicely. Thought I'd push a new hosts file to the ROM to make it ad-free and I get an error saying it's read-only. Surely with S-OFF this isn't the case?
I DID flash the ENG S-OFF HBOOT (more to get rid of the pink banner on the Revolutionary one) - could this be part of the issue?
I was using 'adb push' to push the hosts file, btw

Run the batch file in easyfr3vo once. This should make the data and system rw and chmod 777. Permanently since you have prenatal root

Also, did you patch the Rom with the superuser patch through recovery

I made my own ROM using dsixda's kitchen so SU is already in it. It all works fine except being RW when booted

Yesterday I tried the LCD density change and it broke my Sense launcher. I had the same problem trying to push a modified build.prop to /system/. I ended up pushing the file to the SD card and then:
Code:
adb shell
$ su
# mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
# cp /sdcard/build.prop /system/
You could do the same thing with the hosts file.

I had this problem too after reverting to a fresh stock, s-on install. I ran Revo again to obtain a clean s-off, installed recovery, obtained root/SU with SD patch. After I did all that /system/ was ro,
using # mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
(double check your system block by doing adb shell, su, mount)
then i chmod 777 /system/ and was able to change to rw, and push files.

Delete post please.

ROOTED: adb remount fails ???

ok, so before i reflashed my rooted hero with Modaco on it to stock sprint ROM, all adb commands were working fine, I could easily write a file to phone's system using adb push command.
NOW, after updating and rerooting it,
it won't give me a permission to do adb remount in order to do adb push.
It will still let me get into SU and write a file from there,
for example i'll have to adb push a file to /sdcard/ then get into SU and do cat /sdcard/myfile >/system/myfile and it works fine,
but NOT adb remount!!
Any ideas why this is happening? (thanks)
not sure , but its been confirmed that flash modaco first then then fresh rom and then push to system, btw that's what i did, and im using fresh rom .4 with MR. Working Great here...

I did it, it's a part of the rooting process, and that's wat let me write files within the shell or remove them, but when i exit out to do adb commands it seems like it remounts back to read only mode and doesnt permit to remount from adb remount
I'M HAVINg this same problem. No idea why.
I'm pretty sure this is because the /default.prop file has the permissions set to read only. I've been trying to figure out how to change this, but having no luck with this or other modifications that MoDaCo built into this ROM. started a thread over here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=586630
There's other mods, such as setting up the superuser whitelist app. Hopefully someone with some experience helps us newbie's along.

TypeFresh good to go on 2.1?

As the title states, is TypeFresh good to go on rooted 2.1 on an X10i? The huge fonts are killing me
It wouldn't reboot for me so I've just used RootExplorer instead.
It worked fine for me, both apps (Typefresh and Andexplorer) where installed from the market.

Thanks for all the links my friend.
I always use this method to change my fonts:
1. I pick the font I want and I copy the regular and bold version on my SD.
2. I rename the regular to DroidSans.ttf and the bold to DroidSans-Bold.ttf.
3. Then, on my phone, using a Terminal application, I type:
su
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
chmod 4755 /system/fonts/DroidSans.ttf
dd if=/sdcard/DroidSans.ttf of=/system/fonts/DroidSans.ttf
chmod 4755 /system/fonts/DroidSans-Bold.ttf
dd if=/sdcard/DroidSans-Bold.ttf of=/system/fonts/DroidSans-Bold.ttf
4. Reboot!
5. Enjoy!!

I tried to change it by the Terminal but it says adb not found. Please help how can I overcome this problem.
If you can't get Typefresh to reboot please try the following: Install the latest Busybox from the market. This fixed the problem for a friend of mine.

I used the same method. The first time you run Typefresh you have to give permission, this will cause Typefresh to 'cannot remount sytem' , when you retry it works

Or just copy and paste using RootExplorer or similar. TF can be a bit temperamental at times, was in 1.6 and is in 2.1.
works perfectly for me... running sony sketch..... no more large letters in 2.1

[i9003][Mod] Root XXKPM without CWM

Hi everyone,
this method helps you to achieve root in XXKPM without CWM (which will be available shortly). You will need the attached files and Linux with installed Android SDK. Credits go to ChainsDD for the Superuser binary and APK and to Skin1980 for his normalboot.img repack script. This method is more time consuming than flashing CWM and more risky. Beware!
Flash XXKPE followed by XXKPM via Odin.
Flash the modified normalboot.img as PDA via Odin and do a full wipe. This enables the adb shell to run as root on the device, allows debugging and mock locations.
Now start up Linux and hook up your device to your PC. Do not forget to activate USB debugging in the settings. Follow these directions very carefully, otherwise you might have to reflash or even loose your IMEI!
Run Terminal. In Terminal, gain root access and start adb:
Code:
su
adb start-server
To be sure adb is running and recognized your device, issue
Code:
adb devices
Now the delicate part: Mount /system read-write:
Code:
adb shell
su
At this point, the "$" at the beginning of each line should change to "#". Otherwise, you're not root and can not continue.
Code:
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/stl9 /system
exit
And now push the Superuser files to the device (I am assuming they are lying in your home directory. Otherwise, adjust the path. For example, "su" could be in "/home/user/i9003/su"):
Code:
adb push su /system/bin/su
adb push Superuser.apk /system/app/Superuser.apk
And finally set the correct permissions and remount /system read-only:
Code:
adb shell
chmod 6755 /system/bin/su
sync
mount -o remount,ro -t yaffs2 /dev/block/stl9 /system
exit
Reboot.
After this, you will typically install busybox from the market. But this is up to you. Have fun!
Thanks for the info..r we really need this?coz I've no linux on my desk

[Q] roo Desire S without bootloader unlock?

Can it be done?
I tried de Superoneclick method and it did not worked.
But also i tried with another program "unclockroot 2.3.1" ad the thing is that after i run it and before i reboot phone i have shell root "#" but nothing of superuser or SU on the phone.
Could it be possible, after i have "#" to change R/W previligies on system folder and install superuser.apk and SU through adb commands?
which ones are the adb commands to perform?
And can anyone send superuser.apk and the proper su to install?
Many thx for all the help.
D_Saint
The method to root Desire S without unlocking bootloader is described at least in 5 places, in General and Development forums, and involves downgrading the firmware. Please read.
did not find any that suites my needs.
And believe me i searched, i have been reading about this in the past 2 weeks....
Can you please send me the links?
I found these commands:
# mount -o remount,rw -t rfs /dev/block/st19 /system
# exit
adb push busybox /system/bin
adb push su /system/bin
adb install Superuser.apk
adb shell
# chmod 4755 /system/bin/busybox
# chmod 4755 /system/bin/su
# mount -o remount,ro -t rfs /dev/block/st19 /system
# exit
adb reboot
Are they correct?
Thx again.
what we are saying is that for now u cant root d latest hboot 2.0.0.xx u have to downgrade 1st or use d XClip hardware to permanently unlock n root ur desire s
cheers
No, the commands are incorrect, because the root you're seeing is only temporary, and the thing that protects /system from being written to is not just R/O mount. There is a HW protection that needs to be unlocked to be able to write to /system, otherwise everything you do will be gone after rebooting. I said - please read, and I meant it. If you want pointers - google "how S-OFF was achieved on G2" and then read.

Look for "downgrade HBOOT without using HTCDev unlock". There are 3 guides there.

[GUIDE] Enable/Disable HTC Virtual CDROM

I personally hate the automounting CDROM image with HTC software. I know it's fairly common knowledge how to disable it but below are the commands for anyone that cares. Make sure android debugging is enabled and enter the applicable command in your computer's terminal. As with other /system edits, this will only stick if you have S-OFF. You may need your phone screen unlocked to accept the su prompt if you haven't already granted ADB root access.
Disable HTC Virtual CDROM:
Code:
adb shell su root -c "mount -o remount,rw /system /system; mv /system/etc/CDROM.ISO /system/etc/CDROM.ISO.bak; mount -o remount,ro /system /system"
Re-Enable HTC Virtual CDROM:
Code:
adb shell su root -c "mount -o remount,rw /system /system; mv /system/etc/CDROM.ISO.bak /system/etc/CDROM.ISO; mount -o remount,ro /system /system"
i didnt know
I didn't know either... thanks!:good:
Never even crossed my ind to remove that annoying "feature"
Cheers man
Any particular reason to not simply rename the file cdrom. iso.bak or just delete it?
Transmitted from the holodeck of my HTC One M8.

Nope, I'm in IT so I always rename and not delete for small files. Personal preference.
I had no idea. Thanks so much
Nice. So glad to get rid of that stupid thing. I wanted to do that before but couldn't find where the file was located. Worked great. Thanks alot!
Thanks, just used root explore, found the file, and just added .bak to it.
Put a bootable Linux rescue ISO in there
unfortunately, I can't find that file. it exist because the silly CD popups every time I plug my phone in, but the .iso isn't in system/etc. my phone seems to be slightly stupid when doing a search. Oh well. Good info to have. Thanks for posting the instructions. I appreciate it.
