ROOTED: adb remount fails ??? - Hero CDMA Android Development

ok, so before i reflashed my rooted hero with Modaco on it to stock sprint ROM, all adb commands were working fine, I could easily write a file to phone's system using adb push command.
NOW, after updating and rerooting it,
it won't give me a permission to do adb remount in order to do adb push.
It will still let me get into SU and write a file from there,
for example i'll have to adb push a file to /sdcard/ then get into SU and do cat /sdcard/myfile >/system/myfile and it works fine,
but NOT adb remount!!
Any ideas why this is happening? (thanks)

not sure , but its been confirmed that flash modaco first then then fresh rom and then push to system, btw that's what i did, and im using fresh rom .4 with MR. Working Great here...

I did it, it's a part of the rooting process, and that's wat let me write files within the shell or remove them, but when i exit out to do adb commands it seems like it remounts back to read only mode and doesnt permit to remount from adb remount

I'M HAVINg this same problem. No idea why.

I'm pretty sure this is because the /default.prop file has the permissions set to read only. I've been trying to figure out how to change this, but having no luck with this or other modifications that MoDaCo built into this ROM. started a thread over here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=586630
There's other mods, such as setting up the superuser whitelist app. Hopefully someone with some experience helps us newbie's along.

[GUIDE] How to Flash a ROM WITHOUT an SD Card

How to Flash a ROM Without an SD Card

This is for all those who don't have a working sdcard, sdcard slot, etc. but want still to flash a new rom
Prerequisites:
Flash an Amon_RA recovery if you're using Clockwork - I recommend Darch's unofficial (CDMA Hero refer to my signature if you need it)
Access to a computer that had AndroidSDK tools on it - you'll be using ADB
Put whichever ROM.zip you want to flash in your android-sdk\tools folder - I would rename it to something simple. (My example which I'll be using for this tut is: C:\AndroidSDK\toosl\ROM.zip)
Directions:
Reboot into the Amon_RA recovery
Wipe data/factory reset, cache, and dalvik via the recovery menu
Open up cmd/terminal on your computer
Navigate to your android-sdk\tools directory
Enter the following in cmd/terminal:
Code:
adb shell
mount data
*wait a second or two* You may or may not get the "/ #" line returned.
Despite what happens press "Ctrl+C" to break the command and get back to the standard AndroidSDK\tools> directory
Enter the following in cmd/terminal:
(replace "ROM.zip" with the name you're using)
Code:
adb push ./ROM.zip /data/
*this will take anywhere from 30sec to a min depending on the rom.zip size*
Then we do this in cmd:
Code:
adb shell
recovery --update_package=DATA:ROM.zip
Wait for it to finish flashing/updating
Reboot
ENJOY
Brief rundown of what we just did:
Wiped /data/ to free up space for the zip
Put our ROM.zip onto the /data/ partition since we don't have an SD Card to work with.
Told the recovery to flash from our /data/ partition instead of /sdcard/
I did some digging around the AmonRA github to look for the commands it actually performs while in recovery I figured out exactly how to do what I wanted.
(namely THIS PAGE for those of you who are interested in seeing the exact page I found them on)
Good knowledge man. Thanks for the guide

It would be the name of the file you are trying to flash.
How do you flash the recovery without an SD card tho?
EDIT: I figured it out. I will post my steps later.
Here is what I did:
Rooted phone
Attempted to push Flash_image - failed due to filesystem permissions
Steps for Flash_Image:
adb shell
su
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system/bin
chmod 777 /system/bin
exit/ctrl+c
adb shell
adb push flash_image.zip /system/bin/flash_image
adb shell chmod 0755 /system/bin/flash_image
Flashing Recovery:
adb push Recovery.img /system/bin/
adb shell
flash_image recovery /system/bin/Recovery.img
rm /system/bin/Recovery.img
reboot recovery
Then proceeded to follow the steps in this guide successfully

So would that be like this:
Code:
adb remount
adb shell
adb push flash_image.zip /system/bin/flash_image
adb shell chmod 0755 /system/bin/flash_image
Just confirming because I am about to feature this method on the blog I write for (with credit to Stuke00 and a link to his post) and don't wanna mess up. =)
EDIT: Forgot to mention that you rock! Thanks for the earlier help too.
EDIT 2: Nevermind, did some reading on what 'adb remount' does and found out it remounts /system with read+write access so I guess this is it. Though please do correct me if I am still wrong (which I am often).

Dunno, I don't have plans for using it ever again nor have I looked at Clockwork's github - if there is one.
But it should be able to if you can find out what scripts/commands are run when you use the menu. If you want to you can check the github link I have in the OP to see where I found the commands that are run, and then look for something similar in clockwork's source.
You'd be looking for something similar to:
Code:
--update_package=root:path - verify install an OTA package file
Thanks for the awesome guide! Saves me a lot of trouble, I don't have to take out my sdcard or manually enable USB in recovery anymore!
for me
for me it did not work in data but it worked in cache

ADB question

I have read many posts about ADB push/remount permission issues, etc. But unfortunately I still have not figured out what's wrong with my situation. First of all, I don't have a micro SD card, so I have to push files directly to the phone memory.
I firstly tried "adb push" but seems it doesn't work for me
$ adb push email.apk /system/app
failed to copy 'email.apk' to '/system/app/email.apk': Read-only file system
Click to collapse
Then I searched online and people said you need to remount first. Then I got the infamous permission problem
$ adb remount
remount failed: Operation not permitted
Click to collapse
Then I tried open shell first. no go
$ adb shell
$ mount -o remount rw system/app
mount: Operation not permitted
Click to collapse
I searched more and found it can get su permission so to make things work. But when I hit "su(enter)" after open adb shell, I don't see the "#" showing up but still got an error message after waiting for a while
$ adb shell
$ su
Permission denied
Click to collapse
Any one can please tell what's wrong with my operation? I rooted my G2x but didn't flash it. I installed the ROM manager and installed CWM but didn't proceed to reboot into recovery mode.

su app? how should I set it? I didn't see anyone mentioned that. Do you care to give a bit more details? Thanks.
I think I figured out. I have to manually run the superuser app and let it say in active. Then when I type in "adb shell" the app on the handset will ask my permission. Thanks for the reminder.
Plus I am doing the following as the following that I read from another thread
adb shell
$ su
# mkdir /data/yourname
# chmod 777 /data/yourname
# exit
$ exit
adb push gps.conf /data/yourname
adb shell

[i9003][Mod] Root XXKPM without CWM

Hi everyone,
this method helps you to achieve root in XXKPM without CWM (which will be available shortly). You will need the attached files and Linux with installed Android SDK. Credits go to ChainsDD for the Superuser binary and APK and to Skin1980 for his normalboot.img repack script. This method is more time consuming than flashing CWM and more risky. Beware!
Flash XXKPE followed by XXKPM via Odin.
Flash the modified normalboot.img as PDA via Odin and do a full wipe. This enables the adb shell to run as root on the device, allows debugging and mock locations.
Now start up Linux and hook up your device to your PC. Do not forget to activate USB debugging in the settings. Follow these directions very carefully, otherwise you might have to reflash or even loose your IMEI!
Run Terminal. In Terminal, gain root access and start adb:
Code:
su
adb start-server
To be sure adb is running and recognized your device, issue
Code:
adb devices
Now the delicate part: Mount /system read-write:
Code:
adb shell
su
At this point, the "$" at the beginning of each line should change to "#". Otherwise, you're not root and can not continue.
Code:
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/stl9 /system
exit
And now push the Superuser files to the device (I am assuming they are lying in your home directory. Otherwise, adjust the path. For example, "su" could be in "/home/user/i9003/su"):
Code:
adb push su /system/bin/su
adb push Superuser.apk /system/app/Superuser.apk
And finally set the correct permissions and remount /system read-only:
Code:
adb shell
chmod 6755 /system/bin/su
sync
mount -o remount,ro -t yaffs2 /dev/block/stl9 /system
exit
Reboot.
After this, you will typically install busybox from the market. But this is up to you. Have fun!
Thanks for the info..r we really need this?coz I've no linux on my desk

Anyone tried this method?
confirmed this method works
@g5abiera: I sure hope so
You mention an error in the OP. Can you specify?
Works!
Rooted and Deodexed...
i really don't know what went wrong the first try, i was getting an error telling me there isnt enough space in the partition where the su binary goes. then again, i simply reflashed kpm, and viola, it works.

[Q] Simple adb question (or perhaps not?) Permission Denied

Hi all--in need of some help here--have been crusing the forums for three days and still hitting a brick wall...
Have a rooted (and minimally modded) Atrix 4g in serious need of a hard reset and all the pain that comes with as nearly every app force closes on startup.
Hoping to backup some of my data (contacts, SMS, etc), but unable to do so my usual way (an app, root explorer, or the like), so I'm attempting to use ADB pull to grab the .db files. I'm relatively comfortable with linux, but running into a problem with ro/rw permissions (I think).
have tried the following:
adb pull /data/...../mmssms.db (yields Permission Denied)
# cp /data/....mmssms.db (appears to copy, but no file in destination, and can't copy out of shell)
have been able to remount /system as rw, but not /data where the files are located.
Anybody have suggestions? I'd be most apprecative!
Copy the the files as superuser to your sdcard first and adb pull them from there.
Unfortunately, the whole reason I'm needing to reset is that every app (incl superuser accesses) force closes on start--no chance to move through the phone itself. Since the .db files are not in the usb-accessible file structure I'm thinking that ADB is the only way to access.
Does that make sense?
Hi, OP here--anybody else have a suggestion? Getting a little desperate here... Any thoughts would really be appreciated!
im assuming your accessing ADB via recovery?
You should be able to use su without superuser.apk's permission in that case - however, theoretically, you should not need to use su in recovery anyway.
you can try running
Code:
adb shell ls -l /data/data/*tele*/databases/mmssms.db
and see what you get permissions wise, maybe a chmod could fix it?
Otherwise you could try
Code:
adb shell mount -o remount,rw /data
Another alternative to cp and adb pull is cat
Code:
adb shell cat /path/to/mmssms.db > /path/to/destination-file.db
might copy remote mmssms.db to a local file, while
Code:
adb shell
cat /path/to/mmssms.db > /path/to/destination-file.db
exit
would copy remote to remote
Is /data mounted at all?
This is strange, you should have read access to everything, especially in recovery.
What phone and what recovery?
Its not something as simple as geting the URIs the wrong war round ('cmd local remote' vs 'cmd remote local')?
So, still tinkering... Will give it one last try before I call it quits and just wipe the bloody thing. So, your thoughts were spot on--its probably me missing something.
Quick data dump on progress to data:
Phone: Rooted Motorola Atrix running 2.2
no trouble accessing shell or via ADB
/data is mounted, though only in Read Only mode--can't seem to change, have tried several ways in various modes (shell, su, etc)
Permissions for mmssms.db are: -rw-rw---- radio radio
chmod 777 of the file yields: "Read-only file system," which makes sense since I can't seem to change /data... to rw
Tried to remount rw:
adb shell mount -o remount,rw /data
and
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mmcblk0p11 /system (for systeem
but get "Operation not permitted" in both cases.... UGH!
Hadn't thought of cat--great idea. Still no real joy however.
I seem to have managed a copy to /system, but can't seem to get it off the device or onto the SD card.
Thanks much for your help so far. Any final thoughts?
SO CLOSE!!!! (and yet...)

SO FRUSTRATING!!!! so close, but not quite there--HELP!!!
As noted at the end above, have been able to copy the mmssms.db file to /system/ after remounting as RW
Can't seem to copy or pull off the device--still getting "Permission Denied" no matter which course I try!?!?!
It sounds as if your doing this while booted into the ROM, and (maybe) without su (root)?
su-ing might help, just type su and hit return to enter a root shell
alternatively, going in through recovery ('adb shell reboot recovery') might help as most recoveries ignore permission rules - make sure to mount the partitions your using though.
It almost sounds like the sdcard has no write permissions - you can get the NAND partitions to mount rw, but cant copy to the sdcard.
On my Desire, there is (at least) two mount points: /sdcard and /mnt/sdcard - maybe on your phone only one of your mount points has write permissions?
Otherwise i suggest going in via recovery. You can still use adb (will have to manually mount - 'mount /system' 'mount /date' and 'mount /sdcard' usually work, otherwise use the menu item in recovery )
When in recovery, and after mounting partitions/card, try adb pull, cp /sdcard and cat > sdcard (and if possible cat > computer) plus anything else i forgot (quite tired )
if these dont work something is messed up somewhere in the ROM, or likely kernel and so without ideas a reflash would be the only real solution :/
I did have a bare-minimum+apps recovery script (attached) which might be worth a read to see if your forgetting something obvious - it works on my desire

[Q] Problems with ADB remount / pushing app

I've unlocked my phone via HTCDev, which to my understanding should give enough permissions and whatnot for adb to work on system files too.
I'm trying to push application to replace system application, I know the application works, I got both signed & unsigned versions of it but same thing with either one of them.
adb remount says "remount failed: operation not permitted" and adb push [file] /system/apps says "failed to copy '[file]' to '/system/apps/': read-only file system
--
What am I doing wrong, or do I really have to root the phone just to get one damn application replaced with modified one?
Bump
Have you rooted?

You need to have SU# access, which be definition needs root permissions. If you haven't already, use the all in one tool kit to flash clockwork and root that beech. Then when in ADB you enter SU and you will get a prompt like this #, indicating you have root privileges.
Update, I have rooted, stock rom still though
If I use adb shell, I get $, but writing "su" in shell gives me #
still, I've tried both the adb remount and in shell mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
the latter seems to work, but however still when I try to push something to /system/app it still says permission denied
edit:
not quite sure what I did, but i finally got SUCCESS from installing from shell
how did you install through the shell
