[Q] Why don't I have a /mnt/usbOTG folder? - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

US 32gb Xoom WiFi, was HC3.0.1 at purchase, I've since rooted it, installed CWM 4.0.0.4, and flashed Tiamat Manta Ray 2.0.0->2.0.1 (from internal storage...I know it is not recommended or supported).
No issues while flashing the ROMs: the messages during installation are appropriate, ending with 'Welcome to the Party!' I don't notice any specific changes to be sure that it worked, but I assume I am now running Manta Ray.
I bought the Motorola Camera Connection Kit today to connect my extHD, and assumed it wound mount to /mnt/usbOTG, but it doesn't. In fact, there is no /mnt/usbOTG folder, and I can't create one.
I downloaded USB Mass Storage Watcher OTG and I can manually mount the extHD to /mnt/external1 and use it normally.
My questions are:
1) Is there a way to confirm which ROM I am running?
2) Why didn't Manta Ray create the usbOTG folder?
3) Why isn't my extHD (or thumbdrive) automatically mounted?
Thanks in advance!

1) Go to settings--about--and check to see if you see.....Tiamat_Katana......2.0......if you don't see something like that you are still on stock.
2) There should be, in your internal sdcard directory, a directory called mnt and in that you should have at the least, external1 and usbOTG..
3) Most of us need that utility to help mount drives.

Well that was easy- it seems I am still stock, despite the install seeming to take.
I suppose I'll need to try it from a real SD card before asking for more help...unless someone out there has any ideas why it might not have worked from internal storage.
I have root: I have SuperUser in apps, have ClockworkMod Recovery. Must be the SD card vs internal storage issue.

Yes, do yourself a favor and install the Tiamat 3.2.0.0. R4c recovery and use that with your external sd card. There's just no way around it.

[Q] Can someone step by step the sd card working for me?

I have a US WiFi xoom, rooted, running tiamat 1.4.1.
I've formatted the card in a computer and an android device (Evo). No matter what I do, the SD card will not show up on the device in android. It shows up fine in clockwork. I've restarted my xoom as well after inserting the card.
Can someone lay it out for me, because I'm obviously missing something, and I've tried all the answers in the other threads, such as "format it".
I'm having the same problem. Did you get it fixed?
Ok first I'm assuming you have a file manager app (I suggest Astro or Root explorer, file station is a good one too) You should be able to see the files on your memory card located in sdcard and a folder called "external." If you have files on the card but they aren't showing up in the "external" folder a reset will usually make them show up. I hope this makes it a bit more clear.
I've tryed that and I'm not seening that file external anywhere.
In all honesty, you are probably not doing anything wrong. Some sd cards just don't work for some reason. I have a crappy 1 gig card that worked as soon as I restarted my device, and have a 8 gig card that will not work while honeycomb is running, no matter what I do . Same deal though, it will show up in CWM recovery. Maybe the idiosyncrasies that arise from different sd cards is what's holding official updates from including sd support?
So what card seems to work? I've tryed two the one out of my evo and the 16g that I just got.
How did you flash to 1.4.1? Did you come from stock or previous versions. Did you use ADB or Kernal Manger? If it was from stock then you might try flashing the 1.4.0 kernal first and then going back to 1.4.1. I actually liked 1.4.0 better because of some of the memory mounting features that it had.

Do you see a /sdcard/external folder? Do you see a /sdcard/sdcard2 folder?
Try creating both of these and rebooting your Xoom. Which version of Tiamat did you come from?
Sd Formatter and a reboot solved my issues with a 32g Kingston.
jwb
I upgraded to 3.1 and put on the TDR WiFi kernel but I still don't see my SD Card. I can see it in the Recovery module, but not within HoneyComb. Any ideas?
I'm using a SanDisk 32Gb, no issues.
No SDCard for me outside of CW
I went from Tiamat 1.1.6 installed via adb to Tiamat 1.4.2 installed via CW and I cannot see the external SDCard on my 3G Xoom.
Steps I took:
1) Started at Honeycomb 3.0.1 with Tiamat 1.1.6
2) Installed CW 3.0.2.8 via adb
3) Flashed Honeycomb 3.1 via CW per instructions (SDCard is seen in CW)
a. Flashed New Recovery
b. Flashed HC 3.1
c. Flashed Bootloader Patch
d. Flashed Updated Boot.img (for 3G Xoom)
e. Performed Wipe Data/Factory Reset
f. Performed reboot and verified successful install of HC 3.1
4) Flashed Tiamat 1.4.2 per instructions via CW (SDCard is seen in CW)
a. Flashed 3G Boot image with light off
b. Flashed 1.4.2 1600 Kernel
c. Rebooted and verified new Kernel. Used SetCPU to clock at 1,600 Mhz
I still can't see the SDCard as either /mnt/sdcard/external or /mnt/sdcard2 using Root Explorer, Astro or EStrongs. I reformated the card using XP SP2. I then tried to format via my Droid and finally SD Formatter. I reboot between each format. Nothing works. My SD Card is a Sandisk 16GB. I have tried having USB Debug On and Off...no difference. I reflashed the 3G light off Boot image followed by reflashing Tiamat 1.4.2 with no result.
Could the problem be that I went directly from 1.1.6 to 1.4.2 without any interim update? It is weird to me that CW sees the card but HC 3.1 won't.
Thank you for your help.
Update: I also tried to use the Sandisk 32GB from my OG Droid which I know is a good card. CW sees it on the Xoom; but HC 3.1 doesn't.

[Q] "Can't mount sdcard" error in CWM

I've seen this error elsewhere, but no solution. I'm running PRIME 1.4, want to upgrade to 1.6.
- I used the nvflash method. I re-did this, obviously that didn't work.
- I tried formatting the SD card via Windows and via CWM (which didn't work, because it couldn't mount it...duh). Used the default FAT32 settings to format. For others, this seemed to be the fix.
- I CAN read the SD card on the tablet once booted up regularly. I can also mount the storage on my PC.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
So I tried a different sdcard (8GB, if it matters). No issues. No idea why this worked, so I guess the mystery is unsolved.

Probably partition of your sdcard. Try reformatting it to another format like NTFS or something?

In fact, CWM can't real actual SDcard (dock slot), it read the MicroSD only (the tablet slot)
Try putting the zip at the root of the MicroSD, and launch CWM
For me it´s doing the same - can´t mount SD card. I have microSD card that I have formated into FAT/FAT32/NTFS - nothing worked. I try to put it into SD card adapter and nothing too...
Can someone tell us please, where is the problem??? I have root, flashed cwm 3.0.2.8, standart ROM...

MicroSD needs to be formated into FAT32 and only this format
If you read the post above yours, you would have also seen that the SDcard slot on the dock DOES NOT WORK in CWM

Yes, did this. I wasn't messing around with the dock, just the microSD in the tablet itself. And yes, the .zip was in the root directory--though it's not like I was able to get this far. I was not even able to see the root directory, at all.

Plug it in while android is running, and check if the MicroSD is seen in /removable/MicroSD
If, yes, that's pretty weird. If not, try another MicroSD
I had the mounting issue as well. But I formatted my micro SD card with SD Formatter (I am not allowed to post URL as a new user ), then it can be mounted.
myode is right, use SD Formatter 3.0 will fix your problem.
It use low-level format, where windows format don't.
I came across (i can't remember where exactly) some people swear that by formatting the microsd card in a android phone, the card no longer exhibit abnormal behaviour in the tf101.

Where are you looking for the external sdcard? Since the HC3.2 update it shows up for me at mnt/external1 on the same directory level as the internal sdcard. Since I had previously flashed the HC3.1 Tiamat rom, I also have another mount point called mnt/MicroSD.
Awesome!
Wow, can't thank you enough...
I know you got your answer, but just to add on for anyone else who gets stuck on this...
astro starts in /mnt so it was "easy" as you'll see externa1 right there. If it starts in /mnt/Sdcard (showing the internal storage), hit UP, then you'll see external1
File Manager HD... Tap the short cut for Storage on the left, then use the UP icon (upper right), you'll see Externa1 there... you can tap/hold and create a book mark for it to make it easier to access later (it will put external1 under Bookmarks along the left)
Mobo Player.. select choose the media directory (it shows the internal storage as /mnt/sdcard), hit the back button, it will bring you to /mnt and you will see external1 there.

[Q] Problems about Tiamat Room 2.2.1

Although most friends here said Tiamat 2.2.1 is perfet, I really have some problems with it. Pls help me out !!!!!
1. Excep Root Explorer, almost all apps could not write to MicroSD card. Although Tiamat mentioned that the problem have been fixed, but it could not work on my device. Maybe the app MicroSD mount can solve it, but its really unconvenient.
2. When connected with PC through USB, PC also could not write to MicroSD, even use MicroSD mount.
3. OTG device could not be mounted automatically. I have to mount them with Drice Mount everytime by hand. And it is not mount at the folder USBOTG as mentioned by Tiamat.
4.Gmail always FC whenever adding attachments.
Pls help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK, I'll start with number 1: Tablets are not created like phones and Honeycomb is not Froyo or Gingerbread. By that I mean that in HC, apps are not meant to be running from the external micro sdcard...why do you think we have 32GB of internal storage?
Titanium Backup can be pointed to the external sdcard so you can protect your backups in case you need to wipe everything, and of course solarnz CWM recovery saves the nandroids on the external micro sd (unless you choose a different location), and I think some games that use and save a lot of data can also be pointed to the micro sdcard, but you can't run apps from it. I don't know if that answered your question or not.
For the other items I'd like to suggest you visit the Officially unofficial Moray Rom Thread, here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1287720
Good luck.
Thx very much friend!
But to me, access to write to microsd seems important.
For example, when i use an app to open a book in microsd, without access to write, the app could not even create a book mark in the directory.
Is there any ways to solve that?

If you have loaded a book on micro sdcard, what app are you using to read/annotate it? That app needs to be in the Xoom internal storage, but if the app can access books on the micro sdcard, you're fine. If you are just somehow accessing the book (as a pdf or other format) without using a specific app, I'm not sure how you'd mark it up. If I'm not understanding you, please explain more.

Solved! How to swap the internal and external SD cards so apps install externally

If you are like me and bought the 16GB version of our beloved SG3, thinking you could always move apps to the external sd card, then this mod is for you. It swaps the internal and external sd cards so apps install on your external card, because your phone is fooled into thinking the external card is the internal card.
I suggest that if you are going to do this, you should probably do it right after installing a new ROM, and before you install any apps. That way everything will get installed onto the external SD card.
I didn't invent this, Zedomax adapted in from mattiadj. But most people haven't been able to get it fully working, probably due to variations in the init.d function of various ROMS. They'd be able to see the External SD card as the internal SD, but the internal SD would disappear. This method avoids using init.d, and instead uses the app Script Manager to load the script on boot.
After much fooling around, I figured out how to do it so the External SD card and the internal cards are swapped, but you can see both with any file Explorer. I got it working on CleanROM 2.0, but it should work on Beans 10 as well.
Here's how to do it: Warning, if you do not understand the following instructions, or don’t have experience doing these things, you probably don’t want to do this hack. I am not responsible if you a) brick your phone, b) delete your data, or c) get very frustrated. That being said, the most likely failure will be that you only see the one card (the External card).
Back everything up that you care about first!!!!
1. First, I'd recommend making a Nandroid backup of your phone.
2. Next, just to be extra safe, I would backup your internal SD card to your PC. While you are doing that, if you have data on the external SD card, back that up too.
3. Next, I would format your external SD card to fat 32. (You could probably use Ext format too, but I didn’t test that.)If you already have it in that format, and have content on it, this won't affect the content, but back it up just to be safe. It’s probably better to have the Ext SD blank to begin with, you can always copy back its content from your pc.
4. Next copy the contents of the internal SD to the External SD card. This is to avoid confusion about apps and such.
5. Next install script manager free from the play store:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...anager&feature=nav_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDNd
It will show up on your phone as S manager ads.
6. Download the mod from here: http://downloadandroidrom.com/file/...ternalsd_gs3_fat32orextfat_US_ZEDOMAXv0.2.zip
7. You’ll see a folder called: 11extsd2internalsd_gs3_fat32orextfat_US_ZEDOMAXv0.2.zip
You need to unzip the folder, then go to System/etc/init.d and copy the 11extsd2internalsd file from there to your phone. Put it into the /data directory. Use Root Explorer, and your phone will need to be rooted.
(https://dl.dropbox.com/u/6305/SD Card Hack SG3/11ext file in data directory.png)
Or you can get just the 11extsd2internalsd file here: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/6305/SD Card Hack SG3/11extsd2internalsd
8. Using Root Explorer, navigate to that file in the /data directory. Press and hold the file name until the menu pops up, and click on permissions.
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/6305/SD Card Hack SG3/Permissions.png
(Unix geeks set them to 777, and everyone else copy the picture below. Click OK.
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/6305/SD Card Hack SG3/Permission settings 777.png
9. Open the script manager app, and select Browse as Root in the config screen. Tell it to remember this setting.
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/6305/SD Card Hack SG3/Script manager browse as root and save.png
10. Navigate to the /data directory and choose the 11extsd2internalsd file that is located in /data and click on it. Click on the “Is script” button.
11. Now tap on the buttons that say Su, Boot, and Save. The file name will come up in yellow after the save.
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/6305/SD Card Hack SG3/Script manager setting after save.png
12. Reboot your phone and you should see the swap working and be able to access both internal and external SD cards. The external card will show up as sdcard, and the internal card will show up as extSDCard. Your apps should now install to the external card, since your phone will think it's the internal card. Is that confusing? It was to me too!
Good luck and please share your experiences specifying which ROM you used, so that others can avoid frustration.
Thank you’s always appreciated.
Wonder if this works on asop roms as well.
Please excuse my Galaxy S III, it's a bit Paranoid.
On my X2, this same mod was done via a flashable zip...not sure how it worked, but it was worked perfectly. At some point the roms incorporated the flip flop as part of the Rom. I like the feature because I wouldnt need to move certain app data to my external sd card. Also, I wouldn't have to show tibu where to look for my backups.

What's the consensus on this? Can this mod as posted above be applied to AOSP/CM9/CM10?
Just flashed this on aokp and both sdcard and external_sd are my physical sd card. The internal card is not showing.
Op, can we get an cm10 ver?
Did a little playing around. Below seems to work on cm10 aokp. Can op confirm this is good?
mount -t vfat -o umask=0000 /dev/block/vold/179:97 /storage/sdcard0
mount -o bind /data/media /storage/sdcard1

Are you actually flashing it, or using the Script Manager? As far as I know, only the Script Manager approach works.

Not sure, but take a look at the code from 11ext2internalsd file. If it works, and you can see both sd cards, then you've nailed it.
Yeah sorry, im running the script apk. It seems to work. I just dont understand the exacts of the vold/179:97 or if it should be vold/197:96?
When i go into settings/storage, should my physical sdcard stats be showing under internal memory?
Thanks I got mines to work now. Thanks to your suggestions.

Update: ive been using the script below for a littlw while and it is working great on cm10. It is best to enable it after a fresh rom install.

mount -o bind /data/media /storage/sdcard1

Apps Did Not Move After Internal / External SD Swap for GS3
Well I thought everything went perfectly because as mentioned, when I go to storage my internal shows my 64g card and internal of 12g now shows as external. However the apps are still on my internal which is now called my external and when I go to app manager it shows remaining space 5.9g. So I am not sure what I did wrong because I have reviewed this several times and started right after I installed a fresh rom . I am hoping someone can help me correct this because basically all it did was change the name of the two drives but apps are still getting installed to original location. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me
Swapping internal>external did not work
i followed all steps as stated above but when I go to File Manager (default), long pressing Internal SD>Details show 1.2 MB and External SD shows 1.8 GB which is not true. I have external SD of 8 GB and internal is 2 GB in my micromax a110 phone.
The steps above did not work to swap the memory but it now shows even incorrect size. I installed Root Browser lite but got no way to chck the size of the SD cards.. Please help
Does this work with the new Verizon Jelly Bean which they are now sending out via OTA? Are there other Verizon S3 Jelly Bean Roms that are known to work with this method? Thanks
Its works on the leak so i dont see why it wouldnt work on the actual vz rom
not working
This is not working with my samsung s duos please help
Any cm 10.1 updates for this?
I am unable to change the file permissions to -rwx-rwx-rwx- whenever I try to change it I get an error that the phone is unable to change permissions.
EDIT:
Successfully changed permissions and followed the instructions as given. Still not working on the international S3, my internal memory is still 16 GB and external 32GB
