[Q] Sleep function not working - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening,
I recently purchased a 32 gig Transformer running stock 3.2 on a B60 serial number (so a newer model).
Kernel 2.6.36.3
Build # HTJ85b.US_epad-8.6.5.6-20110726
I am showing no updates available for download
I use an additional 16 gig micro sd card that I keep in the system pretty much all the time.
Under settings>Screen>Timeout - It is set to 1 minute
With that information here are my 2 dilema's.
Firstly my tablet does not always sleep after 1 minute. While I understand some apps have the power to override your tablets sleep state, it seems like this is happening with apps that should not have that power (minor segue can someone recommend a good app that allows me to overide granted permissions?).
For instance, Settings times out ok, but the stock camera does not. Since both are stock programs I would assume they would behave the same. I understand I could simply factory reset assuming it was simply some errors in the OS code, but am wondering if this has happened to others and what they did to fix this issue.
Also reference the HD 720 video playback issue, has anyone found a full fledged fix for this issue? I don't know if I am alone in this but I can get 30 fps on youtube but on any website that imbeds youtube videos will not play in HD without extreme video lag (about 2 frames a minute .. literally).
For instance can anyone watch this Drakkenstrike video in that websites url without having to recopy the video into youtubes website or app?
Thank you again for all your help

Video demonstrating how to flash the tablet after having created the bootable SD-card: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47kf4-Vbba8#t=3
RELEASE NOTES
Please provide feedback if things work, or do not work for you.
If it eats your tablet, don't blame me. I deem it low-risk though, if it fails you can reflash it using burntool or another bootable sd-card just like before.
INSTALLATION
Installation is slightly different from normal releases because it requires flashing in 2 steps. Luckily, it's really easy:
1. Download bootable SD-card image and unzip: http://www.mediafire.com/?4quqzqyce9eje7a
2. Write image to an SD-card that's at least 1GB in size using WinHex:
Get WinHex here: http://www.winhex.com/winhex/
In WinHex: tools, disk tools, clone disk
Choose file from zip (sdcard.img)
Choose the sd card as your destination
Start sector: fill in 0, also make sure the directories are correct on left
When finished, take out the card.
In linux, you just unzip the file and use dd to write it to the sd-card:
Code:
dd if=/path/to/sdcard.img of=/dev/sdX # (where sdX is your scsi disk device, check dmesg)
3. Turn off tablet and put sd-card in TOP slot (between the 2 usb ports).
4. Turn on tablet. It will report that it is booting off the sd-card, and that it's flashing kernel + filesystems.
5. Take out the sd-card when the tablet asks you to do so (takes less than a minute). Put it in the OTHER sd-card slot (bottom one), and reboot the tablet by holding down the power for 10 seconds to turn it off, then press it again to turn it on.
6. You will now see the tablet booting with a *GREEN* screen. The screen will flash twice to indicate it's starting. The flashing itself will take longer than in the previous step, a few minutes. If succesful, it will automatically reboot, after which you're done and you're booting the new firmware! You'll see a different boot screen (equalizer on a black background)
7. After it has booted and you have unlocked the screen, reboot the tablet first thing! First boots in android always tend to be behave erratically. This is unrelated to this firmware and applies to all Android setups.
If step 6 fails (which is very unlikely), it will stay on the green screen and it will keep on flashing the screen. In that case, you'll have to turn it off. Most likely problem for this is a corrupt SD-card. See troubleshooting below.
Make sure to never put that sd-card back in the top-slot without erasing it first, as it will reflash your tablet!
TROUBLESHOOTING
The 'green screen' keeps flashing!
The installer will dump a text file on the root of the sd-card which you can inspect. The file is called fail_reason.txt. If no such file exists, things are seriously wrong and the tablet couldn't even properly write to the sd-card. If using another SD-card, or rewriting the SD-card doesn't help, please upload the fail_reason.txt file here.
Flashing was succesful, but the system doesn't boot up!
The installer dumps one or more text files on the root of your sd-card during the 'green screen' flashing stage. Upload all these files and link to them here.
TODO
Find out why some users can't get past the android boot animation despite seemingly succesful flashing
Rewrite instructions for creating the sdcard @ windows
Figure out why Titanium Backup doesn't work
(**) Tested:
wifi, ethernet port
battery status works, g-sensor works
touchscreen works (precalibrated, you cannot recalibrate it using the settings app)
HD video playback works (I recommend Meridian player)
Market works (full)
angry birds works ( thought I'd mention it )
The firmware has already been rooted! You can connect using adb over wifi, and type 'su' to become root. Find your IP address using the Android System Info app.

You can look up the specs here.
Just got one yesterday, and so far I would say it is a very nice unit.
Everything is very responsive compared to other android tablets I have tried.
The book reader is very nice, and the video player is great. Played a 900mb divx movie without a hitch.
Market works good on this unit also.
My only problem is that when I try to run the system update.apk that came on the unit it asks for a license. A 20 digit code. If I select register later it will not allow for update check because it says it is an unincorporated device.
Like I said earlier market works fine, have downloaded several apps.
I even tried the market fix for the Zenithink ZT-180 from this forum hoping if I inserted a new androidID I could check for updates. No luck.
Any ideas?
Do you know where I can find updates and roms for this unit on the internet?
I got the system update.apk from the root and thought maybe I could check somehow where it was pointing the tablet to look for the updates. Is this possible?
I am currently running dory-r2.1.925 and kernel 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #1

Nice to hear! Your problem with the license-code is a known issue, many people have that problem. Just ignore for it now, the manufacturer said their will be a new ROM which doesn't ask for it.
Thanks for providing a resource for this machine.
Will the rom updates be posted here when they are made available or can you direct me to the manufacturers website, as I can not update via the system update app?
ROM's will be posted here, but those websites are:
Gome www.gome.com.cn
InfoTM www.infotmic.com.cn
As soon as there is a new ROM, i will update this topic.
Just ordered one. I sent back my broken ZT-180 and they are sending me a discounted FT2. A few questions:
1) The ZT-180 didn't have a true sleep mode. Does this?
2) The ZT-180 only has a 3-Axis accelerometer, making it useless for apps and games that use the g-sensor (it just has screen rotation). How's this one?
3) How's the battery compare? The last one was terrible.
4) Does it seem faster? Slower? Same?

ZT-180 has 2000mAH, this one has 3800mAh, so it's almost double!

It's already shipped, so I get it in 3 days. But maybe 'cjadams51' can provide this info sooner.
It's a bit of an odyssey to order one here in Germany, but I started collecting material and info related to the FlyTouch2:
onderka.com/inhalt/gome-flytouch2-android-tablet/
The system/board-codename is "Emma", and I'm so curious how development of this thingy will turn out.
On this site that sells the FT2, I asked the following and got answers:
Does the g-sensor work in games, or does it just have auto-rotation?
Does it have a sleep mode?
Administrator yes, it can play g-sensor games.
yes, it has sleep mode also.
Thanks

Anyone got some informations about of there will be a constant firmware improve like the zt-180? And if there maybe release the code
Gsensor works fine in the game labyrith. The screen however when playing this game does not display in full screen mode, only about quarter screen. I assume because it was designed for phone, but gsensor seems as responsive as playing it on my phone. The only draw back to the tablet so far is the battery life could definitely be better. I have not messed with gps that much. I am also trying to get it to work with my 3g mobile broadband card. I have a 595u card from sprint. Would love to be able to plug into usb and have internet on the go.
Any suggestions to get this going. When I plug in it is not reconized in the 3g settings.
Really enjoying ebook reader and movie player.
Not sure what you mean by true sleep mode. It does seem to go to sleep (screen turns off) when inactive.
In fact using it now on wifi to browse this forum hoping for rom update.

Well, that could only mean one of two things:
1) It's incorrectly listed as 3-axis.
2) It is what I've suspected all along. That Zenithink, with their 3-axis ZT-180, got it wrong when they blamed it on the g-sensor. The ZT-180 can indeed make use of the g-sensor in games, it's just Zenithink's incompetence that's holding it back.
As for true sleep, the ZT-180 doesn't have one. When it times out, the screen goes darker but there's still some light. It never goes totally black unless the unit is powered off, or dead.
Zap!: It's not one of two things, it must be both things

The battery life varies of course depending on what your doing. w/ wifi on and surfing maybe 1.5 - 2 hours. As an ebook reader with no wifi over 2 hours.
I am also noticing that the battery gauge is a little sporadic and does not seem always be dependable or accurate. I need to install a battery info app, so I can get a better idea.
The gauge currently reminds me of sometimes when I install a new rom on my mt3g the battery guage seems to be sporadic before it settles down and becomes a more reliable. Still getting a feel for it. It could also be that I am using a little more than I think, I just know that I've gotten hit with the 15% battery warning several times, and it seems like I had not been using it that much.

Annoyance with the martket

Wondering if anyone else is having a problem when updating/downloading apps from the Play Market. Each Time I do it seems to "freeze" the tablet for several seconds, no touch input works. Then it will slowly come back to life and allow touch inputs or the ability to back out/go home. Is it just me?
I haven't had this issue so far. I had a pretty hefty amount of apps to install when I moved over to this tablet and it did it seamlessly. There was some slow down, but this is to be expected as it accesses the memory and such. Otherwise, I had little to no issues with the market besides some network slowdowns when loading images and such.
This hasn't been an issue with the network. If I download a single app its as if the machine is non-responsive for 5-10 seconds, no touch input works (not even the home button) then after that time it will show downloading and everything gets back to normal. I have not noticed any issues in any other programs and not even any slowdown. But when downloading from the Play Market it does this every time, something has to be glitching between the two.
Does anyone else have this occur...with any device? I've used the android market for several years now and this has never happened before. I love the tablet though, this is just an annoyance that I want to resolve.
I have it with Asus Transformer TF101. I always assumed it was a hardware problem (slow NAND).

I'm pretty sure its not a hardware issue with the Note 10.1
No problem here with US GN 10.1 32GB WIFI. Had two Google Play downloads going then went to play Ski Safari that seem even faster than my Nexus 7 even with the downloads in the background.
Firmware update seems to have fixed the market freezing problem I had when updating/downloading apps. Though there is a very slight "lag" that occurs when doing so...its there only when I first initiate an update/download - glad its not freezing now though!

[Q] Movies Pause, Freeze, or Start Over

I cannot play a movie (typically over wifi) without some kinda glitch on this thing. For the most part I have worked out every other major issue on this device except this and I can't seem to figure it out. I have both MX Player and BS Player and they both do this. I have tried every conceivable settings combination you could imagine. Why can't I play one movie from start to finish without 10 -20 random pauses? What is causing the movie to do these random pauses? It doesn't matter if its mkv, mp4, avi they all do it. Anyone else have the same problem?

I'm seriously starting to think that maybe you *do* have a defective TF700! I have never seen anyone have so many damn "glitches"!
Have you tried exchanging the device? I'm being serious... If not, you may want to give that a shot. I have watched countless videos via countless apps, over wifi, from SD card and from internal memory and haven't had any issues...

I agree, even when I was on stock, I had no problem playing movies. My problem was browsing, but anyways. If you can, I would exchange it. Even when I was on stock I didnt have any problem like or similar to this one. Sorry for your difficult time.
Have you attempted to do a fresh flash/full wipe?

Thanks... I use Tapatalk, so I don't see the signatures... I never really looked to see if there was a way to enable them, to be honest!
But yeah, I would try exchanging the device if you can't do something as simply as watch a video... Or possibly try a fresh install first, to see if that helps.

Thanks for all of your feedback. Yes I have volume+ installed. I am rooted on stock ROM and kernel (at the moment). I am watching movies fine now. At least for the time being. Both off SD and internal memory. Have to test the wifi streamer next. Here's what I did to correct the problem. Which one did it, I haven't a clue, but I have a gut feeling:
1. Cold-booted Linix (Reboot Bootloader:RCK and do nothing) three times in a row.
2. Ran FMR Memory Cleaner
2. Disabled "1Tap Quick Bar" as a startup [Some add-on for RAM Booster widgets]
3. Disabled "Exchange Services" as a startup
4. Installed "Bluetooth Auto Connect"
My guess is 1 - 3 did it. I think 3 was the main problem. Do most people have 250+ market apps installed? Maybe that's my problem. Too many combinations to keep track of. One day she's running like a cheetah and the next day a slug. It all depends on which apps I enable at the time.
No I don't think I have a defective device. Maybe I'm just working her too hard lately or have too little tolerance for computers that don't run perfectly all the time. I've got both system tuner and ROM toolbox and am constantly making changes, trying this boost, that tweak, this script, etc. I think I'll just find stability and leave it to rest for awhile. Reminds me of a Ford Bronco I had all boosted that would constantly break down so I got in the habbit of always carring tools and spare parts to fix just about any problem that could occur road-side in under 10 minutes. It wasn't uncommon for me to pull over on the freeway in the rain to adjust my timing. I used to and still do enjoy tweaking on things to make them better. Glad to be driving a Honda now. Just looking for that same reliablity in my hardware.

Update: Back for some more wrestling. Both my arms are out-of-the socket but I can still hop. Reminds me of a Monte-Python I saw once with a limbless Knight and a rabbit...anyway. This only fixed being able to play the movies locally. But then I tried streaming, and still got the pauses. Started doing some more poking around. Disabled everthing to do with NOTIFICATIONS (1-Weather, Backlight Switch, RAM Booster, Volume in Notifications and those System Tuner notification icon packs I installed (%CPU, Temp (F), CPU Freq). Now it plays and streams fine.
Man, one god damn little s*&^^$ piece of software can really screw this system up! Why do top tier softwares come with third tier add-ons sometimes? It doesn't make any sense from a marketing perspective to screw up your reliablity like that. Like this issue or that 1TAP Quick Bar for RAM Booster, never did get that to work. Guess I can't have my cake and eat it too. I'll start slowly putting my UI back together, notification wise, and see which one it is, but if this is any clue, when I disabled the ones from System Tuner, System Tuner crashed. I'll bet its those icon notifiers that was doing the interrupts that my video player interprets as PAUSE. I'm really getting sick of spending all my time fixing little bugs with this pad rather than enjoying what it has to offer, but I am learning oodels by doing it. Remove Volume+ completely. I had issues watching movies as well. stock and rooted. its one of the reasons i almost returned my device. While watching movies, my device would freeze and reboot on its on. Other times, the movies would play, but no sound would come out. I dont know how i came to the conclusion, but i removed Volume+ and have not had the issue since. Maybe get DSP manager for volume enhancing.

With all of the different "fix my system" apps that you have installed, it's no wonder you are having issues. With apps like System Tuner, unless you are really experienced with Android (and/or some variant of Unix) and how these OS's work, you can run in to some nasty performance and stability problems.
I learned long ago that you usually don't need any of these apps and they usually cause more harm than good, especially if you have more than one installed at the same time. I'd suggest that you start fresh (clean install) and only install apps that you actually use. Forget about all of the apps that try to fix things that aren't broken. I think you'll have a much better experience in the end... Hell, I don't even install SetCPU or apps like that anymore - I've found that my system runs pretty damn good now! Android comes "pre-tuned" - let it do it's thing...
EDIT: I must say, however, that I am running CleanROM, not stock. It runs so much smoother than stock that it's worth the risk of unlocking the device to install it. If you are truly worried about warranty coverage, get a SquareTrade accidental coverage warranty - they are dirt cheap.
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T using Tapatalk 2
I concur, all these apps; rambooster, system tuner, android tuner, memory manager, setcpu etc are mainly a waste of time on stock and are clearly causing some of your issues. Android itself is wrestling trying to maintain control of the OS and memory by the sounds of it.
The best tweaks come from a stable system and the kernel. As you are rooted but still locked you won't be able to benefit fully from some of the tweaks.
Every now and then I mess around with system tuner and get things a bit unstable. In fact the best options are sometimes to not even install it
Well I have just about given up on playing movies over wifi. Some work with these settings, others work with those settings, and some just don't work at all. I get the same effect streaming from my portable Seagate wireless HDD as I do over my corporate wifi streaming from my desktop so its not the wifi or the wifi on the device (its been totally reliable otherwise); its the audio and video decoder over wifi just does not seem to work well or consistently at all for me. I can play the same movie locally with settings "A" and need different settings "B" to play over wifi if it plays at all, or plays at a quality considered high enough to watch which isn't often.
Settings I am discussing are H/W+ video decoder, H/W video decoder, S/W video decoder, and same (3) but audio decoder. Locally I can usually play everthing H/W+, both video and audio. Sometimes I need H/W but never S/W. Network I can usually play most with H/W, both video and audio. But I had to play a recent movie over wifi with H/W video and S/W audio to get it to work. Every movie needs different settings over wifi. Really a PITA and with 96GB flash on the pad I just have ended up copying what I want to watch locally from the Seagate via wifi (as I have no keyboard dock or USB adapter). After disabling nearly everthing now it doesn't pause or stop entirely any more, it just "glitches", like momentarily stalls with no sound, or choppy sound, or choppy video, then eventually continues playing. These "glithes" can last 5-10s and can happen 5-10 times during a 2 hr movie. I think I'll just revise my user name here to "Mr. Glitch" as some already know me by and call it a day on this topic folks.

You are indeed locked. If you still have ASUS warranty contact them and get a replacement. Only other option I see is custom romming but would rather you go through asus before using your last life. END .

Try Dice Player - I use it almost daily for local and wifi streaming - works flawlessly...
I too had some issues with other video players, but Dice just works - streams via hardware over network, etc. Also support volume increase and windowed player capabilities.

OMG I got Dice Player it is working flawlessly. I configured my Seagate wireless HDD as a Samba server and its smooth as silk with default settings! I've even got all my startups loaded, some System Tuner tweaks, and no problems I can detect. I was so bummed from these wifi problems because I really wanted to use this pad as a mobile theater system and bought the $200 Seagate to pair it with as a host streamer but I haven't had any luck yet getting it working and was ready to tuck tail, call it a wasted venture, and hang it up. Haven't tried it over HTTP yet but this is simply fantastic. I have spend hours trying to get both MX and BS Player to stream for me and they don't work. This one rocks on wifi. I don't know how to thank you. If you are anywhere near Fremont, CA I will get you drunk for this one.

Works flawlessly over HTTP as well. Got it playing a movie in a window that I couldn't play before. System Tuner, RAM booster, Volume+, Volume in Notifications, Back Light Switch, Browser2RAM, they are all loaded. All the things that didn't work with other players work with this one. I'm blown away. You pick the restaurant and bar, any ones you want buddy. Its on me.

Ha! Thank you for the generous offer - unfortunately, I couldn't be further away - I'm all the way over near Philadelphia...
Anyway, thank the developer of Dice Player - not me - write up a good review for the app on the Play Store.
It has so many unique features as well, such as audio delay, audio amplification, "windowed" mode, swipe to control brightness/volume, etc.
Glad you got things sorted out.

Please Help: HP Pro Slate 21 AiO Touch 2 Closing App & Returning to Desktop (Reboot?)

Please Help: HP Pro Slate 21 AiO Touch 2 Closing App & Returning to Desktop (Reboot?)
I've got a unique situation as I use two of these AiO devices as security camera monitors and this has worked fine for months now. I bought two of these and have them in two different rooms and I have IP Cam Viewer set up on each one to display the cameras that I want to view from that room. I also have installed IP Webcam on each one so that I may use the camera built into each one to monitor the area in front of of the monitors. This worked fine for months and I hadn't updated any firmware or anything on them because they worked fine as they were so I had no need to change anything. Within the last couple of weeks I would wake up and both of the monitors would be on the home screen with the apps both closed. I don't know if it's rebooting the entire unit or if just the apps are crashing or what but it's a real PITA since they're mounted up high and require getting a step stool out to reach them each time. Since I started having issues I upgraded the device's firmware since there was an update available thinking it might fix my issue but it did not. I thought maybe a notification was causing the issue (even none of my other Android devices close out the apps when I have a notification) so I disabled the notifications for some apps that default to have them enabled since I'm not using them but it's still happening.
I dunno what to think here.
Anyone have any suggestions to fix this?
Bumping this up & hoping to get some help. The problem still persists and I haven't been able to get any closer to a solution. I've noticed a couple of times now that I will get an error that may or may not be related. The error says:
"unfortunately, com.wolo.service has stopped"
Now, I don't know if this is the causation of the issue because there has been times that the screen going black (from basically a security monitor) has caught my eye and when it comes back on to the home screen (about a second or so) there is no error message. My guess is that this is the behavior most of the time. I just thought that it might be related or help to solve the problem.
To recap, HP Pro Slate 21 running whatever version of Android came on it and I quite literally have two apps installed and ONLY two apps installed: IP Cam Viewer & IP Webcam which I run exclusively 24/7 and nothing more. It worked fine for months where IP Webcam would allow me to access the webcam on the monitors as an extra security camera and then use the display to display 9 of the security cameras as a monitor. Then, without any notice or any changes from me (I wasn't even updating any apps or anything since I had no issues) the monitor crashes several times a day. This requires me to launch IP Webcam again to allow access to the camera and then launch IP Cam Viewer to display the security cameras as a monitor. This works fine for about 1/4 or so of the day/night but then, inevitably, it will occur again.
This is SO annoying from a device that should just work w/o any input.

Encrypt Phone does nothing on Doogee X5 Pro (Android 5.1, kernel [email protected]

I have a Doogee X5 Pro (Android 5.1, kernel [email protected]). When I try to encrypt the phone (Settings -> Security -> Encrypt phone), it has me verify my screen lock PIN and it checks that I have a fully charged battery, it briefly puts up the Android logo then restarts ... and sits at the DOOGEE logo until I long-press (10+ seconds) the power button to restart the phone. It never encrypts.
Can someone recommend, either specific to this phone, or likely more generally to clone phones running (I presume) AOSP based Android 5.1, how to get the phone to encrypt?
(The phone is not rooted and I prefer to not have to root this, as it is for a non-technical user, not for myself).
thanks,
I have similar issue. have you been able to fix it?
No, no luck so far. Still hoping someone else has an answer.
Hm, now that I think of it, the phone just received an OTA update. When I have time, I'll try again, and see if that update fixed this problem.
I'm going to try other ROMs today.

That's great, thanks - please let us know which ROM you choose and how it goes.
I'm really hesitant anymore to buy anything which won't run CyanogenMod. I'd like to know how you choose an alternate ROM for the X5 Pro?
same issue here
Same issue here. Older version before OTA update even dis not contain the Encrypt phone item. That appeared now but does not work. Seems as a problem for all x5pro phones
I have what I beleive is essentially the same phone but with a larger screen (X6 Pro)?
Do any of you folks send Skype video messages - my phone runs Skype video conversations fine (camera is crap to be fair) but each time I record a video playback is usually stuttered and like a slideshow or frozen and in other instances the recorded video just "disappears" after recording with no video to send...
I also notice that when watching YouTube videos, if you scroll down through the comments the video playback becomes garbled....
I was not expecting issues like this with a quad core, 2GB RAM adnroid device.
The phone is generally very nicely built other than the aforementioned issues...
