[Q] whats the newest revision? - HTC Sensation

i was eagerly awaiting s-off and custom roms... now that we have them i can and will finally purchase a htc sensation
but i was wondering how many different revisions of the device are floeting around and wich one seems to be the better ones..
after all there seem to be a lot of differences ( different screens, wifi doomgrip, touchscreen issues..)
some of them are sure hardware related so when i buy this flagship phone i atleast hope to get a revised model with some of the bugs cleared...
so i ask if there is a list of the newest versions of the phone somewhere
thx

It's a hit and miss. There are no revisions, it's just that not all batches are made the same way. So you might get a problem, or you might now. Luck of the draw.

[Q] HTC Support History - Ditch HTC??

HTC seem to be developing a history of dropping development and support on their models after 6 months, which is extremely annoying unless you like to upgrade every 6 months. Is this false? Or should we all migrate away from HTC to other phones for this reason? My particular interest is in Android.
I was going to get my wife a HTC Desire Z but now I'm wondering if she's better off with an Android phone from a brand with a support history longer than 6 months.
Which Android vendor provides you with long support?
For me, I have just bought a HTC Dream more than 2 years after its release because there are tons of custom roms on xda. The Dream lives on because of the large community.
Make sure what you buy is a popular phone, so when official support stops you would stil get new roms from the community.
Inclined to agree, I have the original Desire so I am reading up on rooting and custom ROMs. Any suggestions or warnings?

Take your time and read those stickies on the Desire forums. You'll be glad you did.
To OP, I think most are about the same. Though, I am still a little annoyed at the whole TyTN II debacle a few years ago, lol. For me, it really comes down to build quality and not much competes with HTC. Especially when they try. Like the HD2.
I sure am taking my time. I am the kind of person who drives everyone nuts with questions on every detail.

This site is a benefit to anyone who uses it. It will extend the life of your phone. Many of the manufacturers will drop support after a few months. Most don't provide upgrades to software. Being able to use this site provides you with both: technical support for problems and upgraded software as newer versions becomes available.
My advice to you; buy a phone supported by XDA. If its not on here, don't buy it...

Wise words. I am so thankful I got the STOCK factory standard unlocked / unbranded AMOLED UK HTC Desire now, that's about as 'vanilla' as you can get by the sounds of it and I should be ok for ROM support then. Now to work out the right rooting / ROM procedure and which ROM to use!!

[Q] Will HTC use GPU acceleration on Sensation like SGS 2

Question is clear. I am using iPhone 3Gs, and i am thinking about upgrade to android. Now,there is 2 choice for me. HTC Sensation or Samsung Galaxy S II. I know HTC really good for this smartphone area, and i dont trust so much Samsung. But when i look their reviews, i am seeing SGS2 much more smoother than Sensation in web browser. This is frustrating. I know SGS2 is using GPU acceleration and HTC doesnt use yet. And, i wonder HTC will ever use this acceleration and i'll ever feel that smoothness? That's the question for me. As an iPhone user, idont want to use it anymore. But i want smoothness like iPhone on android. Is this possible on Sensation on nest updates. I can wait, because i'll want use my next phone at least 3 years. But i cant tolerate any slowing problems, lagging etc. Now i am waiting for your answers and thank you for your helps.
Even DHD's brother is smoothier than Sensation's..So wait for HTC's upgrade..It must can be solved
I suspect a large number of these bugs (including hardware acceleration in the browser and a lot of other places) will be solved by an OTA. Give it a few weeks for the OTA to come out, if it doesn't, maybe custom ROMs will solve it
I'm not technically knowledgeable about smartphones, so could someone explain to me how the GPU acceleration works? I thought that the GSII relied on a hardware-based implementation, so is there a software-based solution that HTC can use to get similar performance?
I hope HTC will fix it and like i said i trust HTC. But, why HTC wasn't think this before while Samsung do that. I hope HTC knows what to do.

Actually, solution is software-based. Because, both devices have strong GPU. While SGS 2 is using this power, Sensation is not. That is the problem. I hope HTC will solve this problem.
Ice cream sandwich will have native hardware acceleration.
When the ice cream sandwich will emerge? And is that information applied by Google or manufacturers?

Great! I've decided to get the Sensation. I was wavering to see what the Bionic had to offer, but the more I read about this phone the more I like it. Hearing that there is room for significant performance increases through software updates makes it sound even better. Hopefully HTC starts working on a solution soon.
Most likely we will see optimization from devs before we see it from HTC. Fine with me. Same probably goes for ice cream.
Had to laugh at my buddy who texted me the other day. An EVO 4G owner who said he is getting gingerbread OTA. I've been telling him for a long time he owns a ROM machine and could have had gingerbread a long time ago.
The story being devs make these phones truly great and the more popular the device... the more devs we have = more ROMs. The Sensation will be hugely popular and should be a ROM machine in it's own right one day.
-Edit-
It's because of devs that my main phone is the HD2 and the rest of the family uses something else. And it's and OLD phone now! Another ROM machine.
opera mobile is now super smooth, I loved it on Windows Mobile, hated it when it first came out on Android, but its now back to its best. It beats the native browser hands down. They have been trying to implement hw acceleration themselves since last year but haven't yet achieved it... hopefully in the near future
Fine, but, what about this bootloader issue? Is this problem solved? HTC said their devices no longer have locked bootloader. Nevertheless, every single Sensation even they shipped will have unlocked bootloader? Is this information confirmed?

No its not solved. You can't buy it right now expecting it to be unlocked for sure. The odds are great though that it wont remain unlocked. They are working on it in the dev forum right now. HTC will most likely release what they need soon enough if it takes them time. I consider it a very acceptable risk and will buy one.

Is the Desire S the ugly sister?

Last year we had the Original Desire, it wasn't long before it was rooted and had plenty of support.
This year we had the Incredible S, The Desire S and the Sensation and its like the Desire S has been forgotten about.
I think it's because the phone is so similar to the incredible s with the incredible s being slightly better. Also by naming it desire s you expect it to carry on the legacy of the original desire which i don't think it pulled off that well.

It didn't carry the legacy of the Desire at all, I'm regretting getting it, it is a fantastic phone but its never gonna get any decent level of support.
Spoke to someone in the trade. They think the desire s will be abandoned by htc meaning no support or updates. Its a major flop hence the cheap deals. They cant give them away.
Problem is it was released at the wrong time, there will be little to no support from hackers either I suspect.

still a sick phone though.
prolly once the s-off-ing gets released, more people will develop/port to desire S.
my guess is most roms could be ported over easily to DS from IS and DHD
I wonder is the Incredible S having the same issues thanks to the Sensation? I think the Galaxy SII is the Desire of 2011, it'll be the one getting all the support I reckon.
I just hope it'll get S-Off'd so I can root my device
That's all and people are doing that
It's a mid-range phone, so most people will get it, but very little of the dev community on xda will get it unless they are trying to make major developments on it which sucks D:
Is HTC not supposed to be unlocking the boot loader? Or is this just going to be on new phones?
I thought it was just new phones.

I doubt that very much. The Desire S is stable with no generic problems, updates to sense 3.0 will come in due course, it is something they are working on. Incredible S has not received any updates since the 2.3 update, while the Desire S launched with 2.3. I fail to understand what the fuss is all about

Alsoo you can't say anything about it not getting updates no more
I recieved an OTA update just now (like literally 15 minutes ago) and all it adds is **** i don't want. (bloatware). Yayyyy
new software number now = 1.47.161.2
I, like others on this forum, don't really see what the problem is. I came from a Hero and got the Desire S based on its merits as a handset straight out of the box, not what it could be with rooting and modding. As a straight out of the box experience, I've been overjoyed with the performance, look 'n' feel and general use of this phone. I did pay to borrow an XTC clip and s-off'd it quite quickly and as a tinkering handset, it's even better. The important thing is I would have been happy with it as it was... the s-off and root just makes a great handset even greater
The recent (albiet buggy) ports of Miui and Gingerbread/CM7 are evidence that the Desire S has a rich and rommy future
I'm guessing that everyone posting in this thread has a Desire S in which case...
If as me you like the device (which was why I bought it in the first place) then great, I can't see any need to continue adding to this thread.
If you don't - then buy another device or IMO don't continue adding negative posts to threads like this that will mainly be read only by other Desire S owners. It's still too early to predict/guess the level of support the device will get in the future and as the last month should have shown us no-one can accurately predict what HTC will do!
We all have the device and probably will all have it for at least one year, in some cases maybe two so either way we'll have to live with. So let's at least try to be positive!
Best phone Iv had. Coming from the HD2, and more recently the Galaxy S2, I cam honestly say this phone is near perfect. I diched the Galaxy S2 in the end because the touchwiz was in my opinion behind the HTC sense interface. The S2 was buggy and battery life lousy. The des S's build quality it brilliant, has a really quality feel to it. The 3.7 inch screen is also just right.. Hits the sweetspot between portability and usability. Personally I feel the 4" plus screens make the handset to big... Feels like taking a step back. Sure, the S2s hardware beats the desires in everyway, but when it comes to usability.. The desire kills it. For starters, theres no lag when waking up the phone..shockingly there is with the s2 which boasts a dual core processor. To sum up, I feel that the desire s is an awesome handset, not the most powerful, but it's reliable, does the things you want it to and more outa the box..and once s-off'd and sense 3 components added, I feel the phones near perfect. If I had to suggest just one improvement, I'd say keep the phone exactly as it is..but add some dual core muscle.
There.. That's my two pence worth.
No phone will get manufacturer support for more than 18 months or so in the new retail world. As to whether enough modders buy it to make it better, I really don't care much. I'd like HTC to fix a few niggles, but basically that's about it. I don't particularly care if it is upgraded to Android 3.0 either.
I came from the original Desire which I rooted and tried numerous different roms infact I got addicted to flashing not one week would go past without me trying a new Rom
My main qualms with the desire were lack of internal memory and I couldn't wait for gingerbread and sense 2.1
Now the DS has all these features as standard and people are still not happy in time all the custom roms will come you will be able to root and be s-off I'm sure when the original desire came out all these didn't turn up over night
So people please be patient

I really like the sensation but if you are going to buy one you will want to root it straight away and run a custom rom because HTC sense drains your battery amazingly. In terms of speed the sensation isn't at the very top but it's EXTREMELY near but it makes up with the camera which captures much better images than the Samsung galaxy s2 who's screen resolution is so badge you can count the pixels if you had the time.
Piggy-back
Since the recent mega-price-cut, the Sensation has finally fell within my meagre budget constraints.
The only think making me stop swiping my card to buy it is the mega discussions about the different issues faced - screen/unresponsiveness mainly.
After reading fixes and tweaks it seems as if most of it is fixable by rooting appropriately. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
So my question to all the Indian owners of the Sensation is:
Is it still worth the buy? Given that One S isn't coming to India anytime soon...
I have seen and handled this device at Croma and quite like the look and feel of the UI. I have no question about its functionality but only concern was such a widespread report of issues with the phone.
Some encouraging words might help... more than just 'go for it...'
Well worth it! Enjoy and happy flashing!
Thanks Galaxys!
I'm really interested to hear from people in India about its long-term stability and any issues that they might've had over the past months?
I came from the G2x as well and I gotta say I'm way more happy with my Sensation. Then again I really like Sense so that was the major factor for me but their are many others as I later found out. Great support with constant updates for ROM's, if you root, which im sure you will your on xda for god's sake!

All the issues of sensation happened ages ago believe me they got fixed by august or so.....and. the fixes are so simple that it makes you think that is that what causing me problems
Also in order to fix those issues root is not required but I strongly recommmend you to root it to get access to awesome ICS custom roms. The devolepment is blazing fast you'll see atleast 3 Rom updates every day and all of them are new features (no bugs on ics at all)
Also you have Sense4 ports which will give you one S look
As for the phone its really cheap now
For a dual core beast atleast
If you are familiar with flashing custom roms and all I strongly recommend you to flash it.
See the HTC stock Rome doesn't have complete gpu rendering so you feel a difference of touch when compared to so called overpriced iPhones but once you have custom Rom installed and couple of tweaks the UI or touch is definetely better than iPhone (my previous phone is iPhone4 which I've lost it and I can assure you this)
Also camera ...its a beast inside but caged by HTC crappy software....but recently one guy was able to break it and after that the quality of photos and videos quadrapled ( I got a camcoder which records 1080p videos and now my sensation beats it by miles)
The only downtrade to sensation is battery. the stock battery is crap .you can improve battery perf by some of custom roms but go for an extended battery.
I have anker 1900 one and I easily get 1 day battery with heavy use (5 hrs screen time and atleast 1 hr gaming) and this is cheap only 1-1.3k
Also when you have stock HTC Rom the performance is poor when compared to SGS2 but with custom Rom you can compete with SGS2 easily.
All the things need to be done for custom Rom installation is reversible (helps in case of warranty purposes) but you need to be careful while doing the steps
There are guides for every thing here in xda so please follow them step by step

and when you got the phone follow these guides
1. Guide to do Basic things that are to be done for making your phone flashable with any custom rom

this guide will hep you in reversing all the changes you've done too in case of warranty purposes.
2.As you are having your first smartphone You would probably like the Sense UI
(User interface which is HTC software on top of android ) so I would suggest you to go for ARHD rom which is completely stock with tons of optimizations done on it (just see the change log )
This is guide to flash ARHD (completely noob proof )

htc not realesing anymore updates for the one S [S4]

Hi there !
I have an EURO S4 htc one S and since there are 2 version of this phone ( the S4 cpu and the S3 cpu ) I'm starting to be a little concerned about updates as it's been a while since the last one.
Actually I'm still on 1.78 because 1.84 cames out just for the US t-mobile version and there are a list of bug that I would like to see fixed from htc.
1) meteo app and meteo widget works bad ( lag, crash ecc )
2) 3G isn't working sometimes even if the phone show the signal ( problem from early days )
3) Browser performance are not that great expecially now that I have some apps installed
4) live meteo background isn't working
5) also with 1.78 quadrant show a worst benchmarsk result of about 700 points!!
6) sense crash sometimes
So there are a lot of things to be fixed here and there, and as I have paid this phone a lot of money I would like to receive a decent support!!
yes, the update speed is slow like hell with only S4 and don't mention there is one more S3 now, the speed will be even slower. I think they only spend time on One X/AT&T and leave us behind.

Wait the TMo One S is in a different update channel so it may recieve different updates to the Euro/WWE One S. It's a "flagship" device so it should get updates (including Jelly Bean)
First of all they should end with all that silly "sense" stuff and also messing with android itself. I also have Nexus S and despite the fact that it's quite old device and dosn't run so smooth anymore, I have no problems. And I guess that this is because it uses vanilla android, not some screwed up stuff from HTC or Samsung.
HTC makes great phones in terms of hardware, but they should abondon their crapware or deliver it as an addition to android, not replacement of it's essential parts.
This is my personal view, I never liked Sense (it made sense for Windows Mobile) but i like HTC phones.

completly disagree, I buy HTC because I want sense, I don't like android basic at all. They just need to speed up the software development department..
I LOVE HTC design & Hardware that's why I bought an HTC but I HATE sense (it has some good things though, but I think its overweight is not worth it) maybe they could allow more customization and allow download/enable only the things you like...
Back to the topic I don't think S4 version will be forgetted, S3 will only ship to some zones, but worldwide both versions will be present.
Sadly One S will not be as supported as One X, but it still will be supported quite a bit (and after we will still have custom ROMS )

The problem with custom Roms is that with 2 versions of the one S ( s4 and s3 ) the diffusion of the device will be not uniform and we will have less development that own a specific version. Also custom ROMs need fresh drivers!!!

If you check the Touch Button Issue thread (GSM 900/1800MHz) countries are affected only, no relevance to US) you will see various HTC statements that they work on a fix for that issue rolling out soon.
The quality of the statements rather sound like "Update" to me not fix. So it might mean a new RUU and include more fixes? *hope dies last*

I don't think we need to worry about updated for our phones. HTC is the best OEM as pushing out updates. According to Google, handset makers have had their hands on Jelly Bean code for a while now. My guess is that HTC is already working on the Android 4.1 update and will try to get that out as soon as possible.
HTC may also push out a few smaller updated between now and then to resolve some of the issues that have been pointed out. The HTC one S is a flagship device. Support for the phone will not dwindle until HTC pushed out a newer handset.
