[Themes] [Sense 3.0] [QHD] Default HTC Themes w/ Fixed NavBar - HTC Sensation

One of my bigger WTF moments when I started using Sensation/Sense 3.0 was the home screen's NavBar. It looked like crap. To most people it's evident why: it's jaggy and non-transparent. It doesn't look nearly like how it was intended to look. Want proof? Go into the skin browser and look at the previews for skins like HTC and Blue Sky... even in the preview window, the NavBar looks quite different.
I looked around for a fix, but I didn't find anything that adequately addressed the issue, in my opinion. A lot of people have figured out ways to force the NavBar to be transparent. This kind of works, but it doesn't fix the jagged edges and poor quality of the original image.
So I went to work on my own. I first noticed that the lock screen has a PERFECT NavBar image. THAT'S how it should look on the home screen. After a bit of hacking and learning how Sense 3.0 themes work, I figured out how to get that perfect lock screen image showing up on the home screen.
The fruit of my efforts so far is located at:
http://binarybulge.com/android/skins/sense3/sensation
You can download and install the APK's directly, then load them using the built-in skin chooser. Keep in mind these are Sense 3.0 QHD only. If you don't have a QHD (960x540) Sense 3.0 device, like Sensation or Evo 3D, don't bother.
I've also included a /notes folder describing exactly how I fixed the issue. This is only for general curiosity. YOU DON'T NEED TO LOOK THERE TO BE ABLE TO INSTALL THE THEMES. It could, however, help someone fix the skins for lower resolution devices (like 800x480).
Finally, I made the status bar jet black, because that's the way I want it. If you don't like it that way, feel free to insert your own status bar image. It's in the APKs' res/drawable-hdpi folders as statusbar_background.png.
Here's how it looked before (as seen in the stock Blue Sky skin):

Here's how it looks in my fixed bluesky.apk:
Better, no? Now we don't have to wait for HTC to fix it.

Change Log
1.0 (7/31/2011):
- added BlueSky, Burgundy skins
Coming Soon
- fixed default/HTC skin (need to track down all images from various APK's in the framework to make an external skin file... blech)
- other skins from HTC hub?

Nice man! I use the green skin from HTC hub, if you could fix that up would be great

Unfortunately until the m10tools guys can decipher the new image type (14) used in that Skin, I can't really get anywhere with it. :-/

Can anyone put the original notification bar back?
Also, you should change the navbars from the stock skins and add in the straight navbars

Thanks Nicky, maybe I'll add some variants, at least for the notification bar(s). I initially wanted to keep the scope of this thread/project narrow (just fixing what I saw as problems with the stock skins), but I think I can throw you a bone. ;-D
Can you give me an example of a straight navbar? I've seen some custom skins w/ them so I assume that's what you're talking about, but I wanted to make sure. Again, I'm not sure I want to stray too far from stock.

I want this navbar http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1168270
Possible to make it show that straight navbar on the homescreen AND the lockscreen?
I love the Blue Sky theme. So when you press the buttons on the navbar make it turn blue? Just like the normal curved navbar.
Do this just for me? hehe
I'd like to do all of this myself but I'm not that knowledgeable in the theming side of Android. I prefer theming iOS
I see a lot of Sense 3.0 themes and I want a bit of each. Nothing "perfect" for my taste XD

Gotcha. I know exactly what you mean. I like that straight navbar too, but the skin changes far too many other things (I don't dig the square widgets).
If I get a free moment and can do something for you I'll let you know. I think it's out of scope with regards to this project. ;-)
Edit: Come to think of it, I really like the "Espresso" navbar from MyTouch 4G Slide. Have you seen it? What are your thoughts? I'd really like to see that navbar ported to S4G.

I'm not a massive fan of the square widgets either XD.
I just want the navbar. I can live the the square widgets.

I also wonder why HTC haven't released any skins with straight navbars. I believe they did for Sense 2.1...

THANKS! excellent work really, this should've been the first thing I saw when I first had the phone, would've made a way more better first impression I still can't understand why HTC shipped it the way it was.

BOUNTY: palm pre "full" theme

i love my hero but i love the look of the palm pre as well. i would be willing to donate and i encourage others to donate to the first dev to make a full custom theme for our heros that mimic the pre. i do know i already have obannvi interested and trying to work on it as we speak. anybody else here maybe interested in such a theme? myself im interested in a android home theme but a sense theme would be welcomed too.
here are some screenies and resources for any devs interested:
theme site for the pre:
http://www.precentral.net/webos-themes
heres a cool one that is pretty close to the stock palm theme. could we get our taskbar to look like that too?
http://www.precentral.net/webos-themes/black-out-webos-14
also heres a photo of what some of the icons look like in the launcher.

and heres the cake...the full palm pre developer kit for any devs that would like to make a custom theme for our hero's.

and before i get flamed or you tell me to do it myself i have no clue even on how to get started. i just want to pay for the work!
i would also love that a palm feeling sometimes haha but woulnt palm tell the devs doing that to stop? :S there was a pre theme around on the gsma version and they told them to stop
wow why would you want that lol... i think the expresso theme look A LOT better.... the pre just looks to plain...

go troll the expresso threads and talk about how much you like it there...
i personally would love to see a Pre-Theme, the icons and general feel is much "softer" and would chip in to see it become a reality...
R
I can see the appeal for something different like the Pre theme which I think looks pretty bold and smooth compared to Android...and I do remember early on for some other devices there was a Pre theme but I believe development had to stop because of Palm making threats..not quite sure...
Anyway, although I would definitely be interested in giving a Pre theme a try, it would not jibe well with every other application on your device in terms of UI...
as long as the developer doesnt try to sell the theme he will be ok over in the blackberry world one guy made a pre replica and he was getting taken to court for it so he decided to stop the developing of it
i owned a pre and pixi and i love the look and feel of it, just the phones design and battery life sucked. that's why i moved to android. palm won't tell us to not develop a theme, there are plenty of custom themes for the pre. i just bought a palm pre blackberry theme today for my wife and it's pretty sweet. i agree this theme should be free but ill donate for the work the dev puts into it. last summer mmission and zenulator had a palm pre theme for android on the touch vogue and it was killer but had alot of force closes.
im offering $10 via paypal to a dev that can theme the:
taskbar, launcher, icons and possibly the phone with as many realistic animations as we can get on the hero.
i do have a question...can we even get out menubar "taskbar" to look like the pre's? i mean with the icons aligned like the palm with the clock centered?
i had the pre theme for a while for my G1. I cant remember off the top of my head who put it together. I do remember he was told to take it down from Palm because he used the exact images that palm uses. But he just changed the name of the theme to something else and had it up for a while. I still have it on my computer so I could use some of those images to put something together.
It would be alot easier to use a stock aosp rom instead of a rom with sense. If that is what your looking for? Or if you still want sense I could pretty much just theme the home screen, well I guess the dailer too and other stuff it would just be more work. lol. So which way are you looking for?
It would be cool though I have always liked this look too. I think I am gonna get started on it.

as long as we don't call it pre we will be fine. and for your info i downloaded and bought one today off of crackberry for my wife. it has been there since june with no issues and he's selling it.
Well, we don't have to have the EXACT replica of the Pre but that kind of functionality would be pretty damn sweet. I also owned a Pre before coming to the Hero. If we could combine the two I think that would be pretty sweet. Also willing to DONATE for the work of someone who could do this.

[Theme] - Kuma Style v.2 - 2.2 Compatible (Updated 9/07/10)

Ok, I have to give a big thanks to Mack Kaswell, and Xedous for their help with the little odds and ends that I bumped into along the way.
Updates:
8/7: Sorry guys, but this will no longer be 2.1 compatible. I've made so many more changes, and added so many more new icons since the 2.2 port, that it's not even worth going back to update the 2.1 version.
8/10: Big updates to the gallery. Biggest move was definitely giving the launcher buttons a glow effect when pressed. Looks great IMO.
Also, "Kuma Style Lite" is going to be released in the next day or two to give people another option, and hold them over until this one's good to go! I think you guys'll like it.
It actually doesn't look like I have much left to do on this one, so I'm just going through and looking for odds and ends to tweak with. Ex: I'm redoing the leftside taskbar icons. I had them as "simple" compared to the right side's more 3D look, but now I like the thought of everything matching up.
8/11: Home stretch! I pretty much have the signal icons and google talk one to do, and I'm feeling like it's pretty complete!
8/14: I didn't update it on here, but I actually haven't had a computer for the past few days. It just froze up one day, and then wouldn't boot up anymore. Took it to one guy in town who swore up and down tha it was the motherboard, and then took it to a more experienced guy who diagnosed it and saw that my graphics card was shot, and that's actually what was making everything a mess. But, I came out of it with a new graphics card, finally added stupid **** like usb 2.0 ports, and overall have a computer that runs like new. So yays.
Aaaaanyways, progress wise, I got home pretty late last night, so I just updated the signal bars, and that was it. Today, I go into work for like a whole two hours, so I'm just gonna' be updating the google talk/voice task icons, and then finishing out the .9 pngs (Thanks to RIPTIDE9 for writing me probably one of the best tutorials I've seen for something in sometime!). After that, I'm going to have some people testing it, but, overall it should be pretty good to go.
8/15: Made a ton of progress yesterday. RIPTIDE9 got me on track with .9 png problems I was having, so I went through and pretty much redid every single one that I'd screwed up, and then I was feelin' pretty nifty, so I went ahead and tricked out the stock keyboard too! The way it came out is probably one of my favorite things that I've done so far on this phone.
In other news, production's started on The K-Style Lite and BuzzKiller projects, so hopefully I'll have some screens to post of those soon enough. As for today though, I'm taking the day off!
8/16: Man, it sure was nice to have a day off, but, can't lie I did some minimal things throughout the day, like icon changes and stuff. Over the next few days, there are jsut a few more taskbar icons I want to change (liek the google voice ones), and then customizing the widgets like the facebook and twitter ones that I haven't even touched.
8/18:[/B] Haven't updated this front post for a while, but a ton of progress ahs been made. Really have learned a lot about the xml, and am getting better at finding my way around these files. Updated the dialer, facebook widget/app (yes, the app itself), and all of the popups (dialerr, notifications, etc etc.). Still lots more little tweaking to do, but deifnitely check out the gallery and let me know what u guys are thinkign or what you wanna' see!
9/07: Feels good to be back! Been without a compute for weeks, but came in, got back on track, and now the theme is almost complete. Registration for the site is now open. However, I do have a catch:
I'm looking to release the beta of this theme on the site either tomorrow or wednesday. Look out for it.
If anyone could help me port this over to other roms like CM6 and the like, it'd be greatly appreciated. Right now, I've only done it for 2.2 sense.
Screenshot album!CLICK HERE for an update screenshot album. It's easier for me to upload updates to an album than always have to visit, edit thread, etc.. This way I can jsut say "Album's updated!"
LAUNCHERPRO Style!
Let me know what you guys think so far.
Here's a preview of it all in action:
Lookin pretty slick TJD.... A little busy on boot but it unique and your taste... too bad the animation cant go for longer because that music was running for a while.... the music while good might be overwhelming for most folks rebooting.. perhaps a short music boot would be a good option to throw in along with different wallpapers.. Thanks for sharing...

Wow, thanks for this response!
With the boot animation, I'm going to add another animation before it. I'm just trying to figure out what though. I'm pretty stuck for ideas atm, but I know I wanna' have an animtation, and then use that to close it out.
With the music... it actually takes some time for my phone to load up, so when I have the music shorter, it has that image just hanging there to silence until it loads up, and that's why I kept it so long. However, I think it'll all flow better once the animation is extended with the added scene.
As for different wallpapers, I think that's an awesome suggestion. What "kinds" of walls should I throw in though? More relaxed (minimal), or buesier with different looks?

Argh! LoL. Me and my "team" were going back and forth about what color scheme to go with on our next one, and it came down to blue or yellow, and we went with yellow on the notion that there are a lot of blue themes out there. We decided to go with that once "Buzz Killer" (running name for yellow project) is done,. blue's next. Going to do both blue and black, and light blue and white, so it should be good.
I'm dying for a yellow theme. I was just thinking there weren't enough of those... Or any?

LoL, I'm not making the boot animation part of the zip. I'm going to uplaod it for anyone who wants it, but, it'll be optional. I want to keep as many things seperate as possible so that people can pick and choose. I've themed over apps and all kinds of ****, so I want people to have a choice of whether they want those things or not.

I was thinking you might want to use the beardroids as a sub theme within the kuma set. You might kick off an animal droid theme craze.. different themed wallpapers is always a nice touch for those who like the red but want a more classy look for work etc..

Hmmmm, I'm liking the "sub theme" idea, but it's not going to be on this theme. THAT would be too busy IMO. In fact, I think it'd be a great theme to build around itself.
And yea, I don't really know how to fit "classy" into this one. That's why I'd included the minimal version for launcherpro on the right render in the promo pic. Even with manup, he went with two different themes (dirty and clean) for different looks, because it's really hard to get two completely different vibes in a single theme just by switching out a wall. I'm inspired to put out a "light" version though for a more classy look... but, it'll definitely be a seperate theme.
Update: Added screen of themed sense contact bar and setting widgets.

Your theme is FREAKIN SICK!
Love the work man, you got some great skills. Keep up the awesome work. I did like the comment about a yellow theme though... I can't think of one out their. Kind of a yellow and black construction/biohazzard feel would be pretty cool.
Thanks man. Your themes kick butt too, so it's nice to hear positive feedback from one of the people who inspired me to start doing this.
And yea, the theme is going to be black and yellow, but not with a striped construction look... it's going to be a bit more "messy" and fun.

Here are my results. I had to switch from LauncherPro to ADW because it allows me to put way more icons on the screen.

The first time I launched it, mine was already set to 240. I'm assuming higher is better right?

He removed it because people were putting up mirrors everywhere. You can get a refund within 48 hours if you don't like it. It's only 95 cents...

Lower makes things smaller. 240 is default. 200 is supposed to be the line between clarity and space, but I haven't tested it out.
200 really screwed up the looks of things for me especially the sense stuff like the lock screen and music widget

My lock screen looks fine. I mean, there's a tiny little offset or something, but you don't even notice it. I haven't used any of the Sense stuff because ADW with 5 columns and 6 rows +200 density is amazing. Everything fits clearly.
Well more power to anyone who it works for, but I like sense too much for this to be useful for me

I'm actually using Fresh ROM right now, which is a Sense ROM.
It threw off all the parts of sense a bit too much for my liking but if it works for you then kudos
works great for my EVO! Set at 200, did notice some text cut off via MENU on LauncherPro but i can deal with it. Using FRESH btw.
I could actually probably squeeze in another row, but I don't have enough apps for that.
i'll post pics tomorrow when i get to work.
Only bad thing: This app makes it painfully obvious which devs have their apps set to a fixed width. Why don't more just scale it to the screen? For example, Engadget is a fixed-size, but Touiteur is scaled. I may play around with some values between 200 and 240 to try and minimize this effect.

Yeah, I'm using Fresh too. Having been developed with 240 in mind, Sense just doesn't look right with the icons being off. I imagine though, that if someone developed some different icon sets and could apply them to Sense, it would look pretty sweet. Not for me though.
In any case, thanks for bringing this up! It's always good to try new things in my opinion

Yep, coding with absolute pixels is a no-no really, as you can't be flexible to different display sizes and densities. That's why you should shy away from explicitly designating pixel sizes, and instead use "dip" and relative layouts so your app will look the same on any device. That's what I do anyway
Why in the world would they develop for a reflowable layout when it's only ever going to go on ONE screen resolution?

Not sure if you guys are talking about HTC with regards to Sense UI, or if you're talking about app developers and apps, like engadget and touiteur like TheBiles mentioned.
If you're developing for a specific model, like HTC did with SenseUI for the Evo, then you're right, you would only ever intend for it to go on one resolution. That's why it looks funny.
However, you can't look at it like that. Instead of coding it to one device or resolution, you can alter your code slightly without lengthening it, in order for it to adapt to the screen it uses. If that is one model, fine. If it's multiple different models, though, it can burn you if you don't code it that way. In any case, he was saying that some of those developers cut corners or simply didn't think about that when creating their app.

This man speaks the truth! I'd hate to try to use any of these fixed-size apps on anything other than an 800x480 screen. That just seems like such a huge development flaw when it is so easily corrected.
Edit: Sense nuts might want to try 220. I at least didn't notice a difference in the lock screen with that.
im noticing this app scales from the upper left corner leaving space on some apps to the right and bottom. If the Dev for this app can have it scale with a center position this thing would be money imo.
For instance Beautiful widget now is scaled to the left leaving some room on the homescreen to the right.

[THEME] [WIP] "Sense by Cubanaso"

Ok, here we go. On my Nexus One, Desire ports were my rom of choice. I don't really like the stock Sense UI, so I went through a few themes. The flashier, the better, right?
Then I came across this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=778503
Blew. My. Mind.
So, with cubanaso's permission, I'm beginning the effort to port these AMAZING themes to our beloved device. Starting with OBsensed, and hopefully continuing on to the others, as time and skill permits (college student, very first theme ).
This theme is considered a WIP, as it is not complete (yet). Hopefully some crafty individuals can help with the completeness

You'll notice a few things that don't look right, like the battery charging animation (and other notification clashes), as well as the favorites widget. Any and all info/tips to change/fix any issue is GREATLY appreciated.

Dude, AOSP is what I love (CyanogenMod!) but this is a slick theme. Once you get the Sense theme up and running you should consider expanding to AOSP, you've definitely piqued my interest (<3 the lockscreen/pull down bar)
That is a sweet looking theme. Would be great on redemptive 2.2.

Man I'm not even a fan of Sense but I would rock one of these themes especially if it were built on Lou's Redemptive. I have only used his Sense roms in the past and have got brilliant performance and support from this dev. Anyway looks amazing good luck with this port. I will be keeping an eye on the progress. As far as the battery make sure you get all the images and xmls ported. Again looks great.

Once I work the kinks out, I'll look into that. I've always loved R.R.
Wow. This looks great. Good-looking Sense (and even AOSP) themes are definitely in short supply for the Incredible.

Hey, I ported Cubanaso's Tron sense theme for the Evo and had problems with the notification icons as well. The USB debugging icon is in /system/app/pcscii.apk. Took me forever to find it. The battery icons will need edited. You'll have to open them up individually and make the background transparent. Same thing for the signal bars. As for the favorites widget, I'd imagine its an image in the apk but I'm not 100% sure. Hopefully you get this worked out. If you need help PM me and I'll do what I can to help you out with it. Cubanaso's themes are the best!

Here you go folks, it has been requested (it has, I promise) so I am delivering. This is a flashable theme for the "Slate" skin which comes from Sense 2.1+. Personally this is my favorite theme and one of the only reasons that I ever use Sense 2.1...so now I don't have to and you don't either! Simply wipe dalvik, flash via recovery, and profit.
As always you assume the risk for anything and everything you flash onto your phone. This theme is 100% safe, but I am not liable for your ignorance
This is one of, if not the most robust theme for Sense 1.0 on the market today. I swapped over 500 pngs to get this thing just were I wanted it and boy does it show. You guys won't be disappointed.
THIS THEME IS FOR SENSE 1.0 GINGERBREAD ROMS ONLY
*Rosie shown is from the "normal" theme, will replace whatever Rosie is in your rom*
NOTABLE CHANGES
-500+ Slate pngs
-Slate themed Lockscreen
-Slate blue overscroll glow
-Slate themed quick settings tab (Thanks Sk806!)
-ICS Roboto font
-Stock Sense batter with %
-Inc2 data icon
-All notification icons have been changed to transparent background (you won't notice that they are, only would if they weren't)
-All widgets have been Slate themed (example of one in screenshot)
-Much much more, this is just the notable stuff
11/11 UPDATE
-replaced about 50 more pngs (much less green now)
-added themed Rosie with swapped phone/apps
--alternate version for roms that already have a themed Rosie (i.e. McSense)
-should be about 98% pure Slate now, there was only like 20 images that I didn't have a replacement for

Cool beans! If I could do one thing, it would be making a red slate theme. But that would be pretty time consuming.

Yes, I admit that would look hella cool and I would love to. But that would probably take me months to retool that many pngs to get it as in-depth as this one is and I just don't have the time. Sorry I would if I could, but this will just have to do lol.

Oh i know. Not asking any one to do it. Just saying it would be sweet. Be better off waiting for HTC to make one. It would be pretty awesome if the Rezound had a red Sense 3.5 theme or something to go along with the accents on the hardware. I liked the accents on the Incredible, speaker grill and camera lens, so I got the red battery door cover. Love that thing.

Yeah that would make a lot of Sense (haha see what I did there) to make a read theme to go along with that phone. I mean it would match it perfectly and really make it the whole package. I guess we will just have to wait and see. If they do maybe I can port it over lol.

I've never seen the guts of these UI elements, but it sounds like you're implying that they rely on stored .png images for the various button backgrounds, etc? If so, I'd be willing to take a crack at recolouring your slate set into red for you (or someone else) to package up, if given a hint on how you processed this one. Hey, everyone can use a hobby. If I'm being far too simplistic, please let me know.

If you really want to/have the time I can definitely send you all the pngs you would need to recolor. It wouldn't be HARD by any means, it would just take a hella amount of time because there are probably...350-400 blue ones that would need to be recolored to red lol. Let me know if you really want to take a stab at it and I can zip them up for you.

Have at it good sir. Hopefully we will be able to see a Red Slate theme come down the pipe one of these days excited to see where this goes.
*sigh* I didn't notice this at first, but I missed a png on the widgets. I know it's not a huge deal, but my OCD always get's the best of me lol. If there is anyone who can help me track this little bugger down, I would be very appreciative:

Wow McD, you just keep coming out with great goodies for us all. I'm impressed at how quickly you became one of the best devs around these parts.
I'm on CM7 at the moment, but when I inevitably switch back to McSense I'm totally throwing this on.

Haha well thank you very much sir. I spent a lot of time lurking, googleing, and tearing apart roms on my own to self-teach my way to where I am not. And of course lots of help from other great developers. Just honing my skills so I can put them to use in the Galaxy Nexus forum
If you do decide to come back I hope you enjoy McSense 2.5 and my pretty theme.
I flashed this theme on my Stock+ version 2.5 ROM, but the old curved Rosie bar is still visible behind the new rectangle Rosie. The white bar showing which page I'm on will also follow the old Rosie curved path and overlap on top of the new Rosie.
I have screenshots, but I can't show them (this is my first post, please don't kill me).

Hmm, that doesn't make any sense because the images for the Rosie bar aren't actually held in the Rosie.apk, they are in the com.htc.resources.apk so it should have rewritten them just fine? Unless Jermaine changed it up and remapped them within the apk.
