[Q] Trouble with TMobile if I tether? - T-Mobile LG G2x

LG G2x rooted. EaglesBlood Gingerbread 1.6 rom.
Acer Iconia Tab A500 rooted. Stock rom.
I have an unlimited data plan from tmobile and I was windering if I could get into trouble with tmobile or caught if i tether wirelessly to my tablet.
Normal usage of the net is for web browsing, YouTube, and cnet videos. No music streaming, online games, or major downloads. I have my desktop for all of that.
Another question is which apps do you guys recommend for wired/wireless tethering.
Thanks in advance.

if you do what you do on your phone usually then they won't take notice. they take notice of high traffic volume

I agree, you should be fine. Plus, they already include the application to wireless tether right on the stock app, they wouldn't have done that if they didn't expect some tethering to happen. You'll be fine, just don't abuse it.

USB Tethering

Hey guys,
I am from the Captivate forums and I was wondering if the roms for the droid charge have usb tethering and mobile hotpsot enabled out of the box with the current custom roms. I know Verizon is providing their mobile hotspot capabilities for a short term but I would really like to get some tethered 4G speeds without having to pay for separate hotspot capabilities.
I'm running GummyCharged 1.8.1 with the pbj lagfix kernel, and while there is not exactly a built in tethering app I was able to easily install PdaNet for usb tethering. I also downloaded Open Garden WiFi for my mobile hotspot alternative app which seems to work well. Verizon's built in tethering garbage is just plain ridiculously overpriced.

You thinking about jumping from att to verizon for the LTE lock in? That's exactly what I'm planning on doing either today or tomorrow. Don't you just love how easy it is to usb or wireless tether with our Captivates and custom roms?!
To USB tether, you can purchase EZ Tether (~ $10USD), or you can root and run this free app: Google Code Wired Tether
For Wireless Tethering, it's a little trickier - mostly because of the Wifi Access Point / Ad Hoc connection issue. I have heard that if you download this free app: Google Code Wifi Tether, and configure for the Samsung Fascinate, it will work fine. Haven't tested it yet, though.
Cheers,

Yeah that is exactly what I feel like doing, but I will probably keep my Captivate activated just in case because I still have AT&ts unlimited data plan. Yeah that is the reason I was asking becasue everything is baked into our custom roms and they inlcude all of the mods anyone could ever ask for.
I would never pay a seperate fee for wireless tethering to any wireless carrier especially if I already am paying for the data plan. Wireless providers are just too greedy at times *cough*tiered data plans*cough*
Thanks for the responses guys. I hope the custom roms on this phone one day are up to par with what I have come to expect from the Captivate forums.
Also I read that Verizon has been cracking down on wireless accounts that use third party tethering apps. Can anyone confirm this or point me to a reliable source?

Hey, if you get a chance, can you shoot me a PM. I got a couple questions for you and I think I can't send PMs or something.
everything is about to change. On July 7th est, there is be tiered data plans for verizon. 2gb for 29.99, 5 gb for 50 and 10 gb 80. So if your not already on the unlimited than you will not have unlimited more. sucky
Is there a fix to get android-wired-tether working on the charge?

I am running GummyCharged 1.8.1. I installed the wired_tether_1_4.apk, ran it, accepted root permission, but got the "Unsupported Kernel" popup. The adp-1_6-kernel-update_usbtether_r3.zip will not install as clockwork states it is outdated.
Is there a fix to get android-wired-tether working on the charge? I know pdanet/easytether/klink work, but are paid apps.
Thanks
@mrxhack - You are correct. I forgot that the SamChg won't run on the Google Code Wired Tether app. I like EasyTether, though - It works great, and doesn't cost too much. Try the free version first, to see if it works well with GC.

Wi-Fi and USB Tethering for free?

Hi, I just came from a nexus one where I ran Cyanogenmod with the built in wifi tether. I was wondering, since this is a stock rom, tmobile can probe your phone to see if you've activated tethering. But I have used it and hav'nt been billed for the tethering charge!?
How long will this last / is this even supposed to work?

I don't think you're correct. I have a 5GB cap. But Tmo figured out (or guessed) that I was tethering my laptop (using Android's native wifi hotspot app), and sent me a "Push" message today telling me that I needed to get the add-on plan. It was like a pop-up on my Sensation. I'll attach it. And i was no where near meeting my cap (1.24GB on the line in question with 8 more days in the billing cycle). I have a family plan with unlimited internet (throttled after 5GB per line i believe). They want $15/month to tether. I like your reasoning better. I should be able to watch a couple youtube videos, send a couple emails, and browse xda-developers with my laptop. And if i hit my cap, I'll be reduced to EDGE speeds. I looked at my last 3 monthly bills and I averaged 2GB. So I'm not a burden to the network when i tether 3 times a week. I even save most of my Netflix watching for wifi.
This latest instance on my Sensation, i wasn't even using bandwidth intensive content. I got a notification on my other phone (myTouch 4G) a month ago while downloading a 167MB custom ROM with my laptop tethered. I should have just used the phone and downloaded it to my SD card.
I wonder if I used a different app to tether if Tmo would have a harder time figuring it out... I am under the impression that they look for clues in the transfer rates and patterns. Just what I've gleaned from others on the forums...
Just checked my usage for today. attached a screen shot. Strangely heavy usage at 3:53PM. I looked at my browser history for that time period. I checked a weather blog, quick FB check, looked at Iphone 4S articles (just curios, so don't judge me ), and watched two 4 minute youtube videos embedded in the weather blog at the lowest quality setting. That's it. But I'm sure if I were streaming Netflix on my phone, it would eat way more data than that. So why should they worry about which device is the conduit for my internet experience? I can live within the monthy GB cap!

[Q] Tethering/Hotspot

Hello,
I was curious if performing an S-Off on my Sensation 4G would allow me to create a hotspot and tether?
I currently don't have a hotspot/tether plan with T-Mobile, but I've heard there are many ways around it.
I tried searching for the keywords "hotspot" and "tether" in the "Q&A" section but the posts were from before AlphaRevX & unrevoked's S-Off came out.
Does anyone know if this is possible and if so do you have any recommendations?
Thank you,
lilhugo

theres a app called android tether in the market or search google it works i have it on my girls hd2 not on my sensation because i have a tether plan
Doesn't under 'Settings - Wireless & networks', turning on 'Portable Wi-Fi hotspot' not essentially tethering out your phone's internet to whatever device connects wifi to it?
I had someone try this on an ipad2 but claim it was very slow.
I use the USB tethering setting to whatever device that can recognize the internet connection via usb...but things like tablets usually don't take usb like for that.
That's exactly what I had to do today.

Internet at the office was down so I lent them my Sensation to use as wifi hotspot for the rest of the week.
I haven't installed any special software for it, so I'm pretty sure I could have done that before S-OFF.

if you have tmobile us that comes out off your data plan so if you reach or someone else the max data you will get throttle so watch who you lend your wifi sevice to
Okay cool.
Thanks for the info guys. I was curious... Why have a tether plan if you can just use "Wireless tether for Root Users" instead of paying for the tethering plan??
Thanks again,

Why not just use the built-in hotspot app or tethering function?
Or does T-Mobile block that stuff in the US?

Not to worry. As you can see, I live in Sweden and I have no superficial limit on my data plan. Also, they only use it to surf and check emails.
Nope, I was using wifi tether the day I bought the phone long before S-off. The function has always been there for Tmo US. And you don't need a tether plan, just the data plan which is required anyway.
It has always been under the, Settings/Wireless/Portable Wifi hotspot.
Just set a password and ssid and enable the hotspot and connect your laptop, tablet ect.. and off you go!!

See attached photo of notification from Tmobile that popped up on my Sensation (rooted, using the native Android tethering functionality)
List of phones I used for tethering in the past without getting in trouble:
Touch pro 2 via bluetooth and USB (was told at the time by tmo that there was no fee for tethering)
HD2 via bluetooth, wifi and USB (winmo and Android)
MyTouch 4g via wifi-tether (got a notice while downloading a 167MB custom ROM a month ago while driving Owned the MyTouch for 9 months without a notice, and i tethered many times a week. Even Skype video calls, and Netflix on a couple occasions)
Just got popped on my Sensation today with the attached notice. It came through "Push" messaging. I can't find where to view any previous pushed messages, but I took a screen capture before i navigated away. I think i was only watching a couple YouTube vids that were embedded in a page at 360p quality. I hadn't been tethering when the message hit my phone. It was an hour or two late.
You do have to pay if they catch you. Last month they didn't add anything to my bill. My impression is that they are starting to watch the network for signs of tethering (bittorrent would be an easy example) Or large 167MB files. They threaten to shut your connection off during tethering or severely throttle.
If you're doing light browsing on occasion, you should be fine. I'm still mad that I have a 5GB cap on 3g/4g (i average about 2GB) where they'll throttle me down to Edge if I exceed that cap. That doesn't really bother me. I don't mind the cap. Just let me tether occasionally under that cap for free. Sometimes i need to send files on my laptop to someone. Or i need the big screen for a few minutes to type a word doc to send out. It's not worth $10-15/month extra. I still have the cap to keep me honest...
The issue really came up when the Tmobile G2 was released a year ago as the first phone to take advantage of HSPA+. That's the first i ever heard of tethering requiring a special plan.
My hotspot does not work now with the stock ROM based on the new Sensation 2.3.5 leaked RUU with sence 3.5.

Not sure this is right place for your troubleshooting question. Try asking in a thread where the ROM is being discussed... This thread is more about not having to pay Tmo for the privilege of tethering. Most of us have a data cap (2GB or 5GB) and we want to use it up without being told which device has to be the end user of that data. Tmo is trying to make sure people don't abuse the network with high demand like replacing a home internet connection.
But, here's my advice:
Make sure you are getting a data connection on the phone. Then make sure the PC is truly getting an IP (not a private IP that usually starts 169.x.x.x i think?), it should be 192.168.x.x. If you have trouble still, try disabling the security [WEP or WPA] in the tethering app. Then see if you can connect. If you can after disabling security, then you might need to tweak the security settings in the app, and replicate them on the PC to get secure again. I don't have that ROM, so i can't be of more help.
Thanks for the reply, I would put it in the Rom thread, but don't have enough posts to do that yet.......

Tmous action against tether
Ok. Now Tmo has gone farther. I posted earlier in this thread about their notices against tethering. Now they've gone a step further. I was tethering this morning and uploading a 55MB youtube video from my laptop. I got another push message warning me against tethering without the add-on plan and then my upload failed. I tried to pull up google.com on my laptop, and it went to a tmobile page encouraging me to add the tether option to my monthly plan. (see attached).
I am rooted and even just installed a 3rd party app for tethering by barnacle. Somehow Tmo still figured it out. The worst part is i could email the 55MB (via gmail) to my phone and then I could upload it to youtube via 3g/4g on my phone. This would cost Tmobil data twice (once each way to my phone).
I'm not asking to abuse my internet connection (i'm capped at 5gb/month anyway, then EDGE speeds after that). On my phone, I could easily watch Netflix for a few hours and Skype video conference all day long, and tax their network like crazy. But even with tethering, i've only used 1-2 GB per month. Maybe I'll send the video to my dropbox, then download it to my phone, and upload it from there. F*%k you Tmo! I'm buying 5GB/month, let me used it on my 15" screen with a full keyboard! I'm not asking for unlimited high speed data to replace my DSL (yeah, i know DSL is no faster than my 4G. It's better at my house than my tmo connection though).

You have got to be kidding me .. what next?
I have never had this problem with tmous. I regularly tether laptops, tablets and ipods to my Sensation with no issue/message. Heck, I moved into my new apartment a few months ago, and while I didn't have internet, I tethered my xbox to my sensation and played on that. HSPA+ was more than fast enough to give me no lag while pwning n00bs.

[Q]Tethering DroidX to TF?

I have searched and read many posts about tethering but am not clear about the subject. I have a Motorola DroidX phone with Verizon 3G, and a Transformer. Neither are rooted and I don't want to root them. I'd like to have internet access on the TF when I am not near a wifi hotspot.
I found some instructions a while back for how to tether via Bluetooth and it worked, but internet access on the TF (via the phone's 3G) seemed very slow - much slower than internet browsing directly on the phone. I'm guessing that the bluetooth connection was a bottleneck for speed. I have read that the latest ASUS latest firmware for the TF allows "ad hoc" tethering without rooting (not sure what ad hoc means). So maybe that opens a door for tethering other than via bluetooth?
Questions:
1. Can the Transformer take advantage of the DroidX's 3G access via a wi-fi connection between the two? And would that be faster than bluetooth? Are there instructions somewhere on how to do this? (Everything I found by searching required the phone and/or the TF to be rooted)
2. I read that Verizon prohibits tethering and is warning customers who do it. How would Verizon know that the phone is feeding it's 3G connection to the tablet? On Verizon's end, wouldn't it just look like you were using the phone to browse the internet?
Thanks for any insight you can provide.
I am currently using barnacle to tether my transformer through my x2 it does require root on the x2 though, works fine though.

1. Yes, WIFI is faster than Bluetooth.
2. The DroidX can be used as a mobile (WIFI) hotspot. You must however either pay for the service through Verizon or root your phone. I am unaware of any other ways around it.
Your choices are
1. Pay for the wifi hotspots
2. Root and use a rom with a froyo based kernel, I have not had any luck tethering with a GB kernel.

working fine here rooted and on 2.3.3 pre root
Is barnacle free? Not the app itself, but using it to tether. I'd only tether when I'm at my home in Upstate, NY, which is only 1-2 times a month, and it would be pretty useless for me to get an ISP up there or pay 20$ a month for something I only use 1-2

[Q] Can you Tether without being charged?

I have never Tethered my Samsung Ace to my Asus Pad TF300T before and I have been reserching this feature because I am about to go on holiday.
Before I experimented I asked my ISP (Virgin Mobile) if this was possible. They replied that I could Tether my phone for the princely sum of 50 pence a time.
Now I'm not happy with being charged twice for the same thing when all I want to do is surf on a bigger screen.
Is there any way that I can Tether my phone and tablet without having to pay 50 pence a pop?

If you have root you search the market for wifi tether apps that will let you tether with out the restrictions from your carrier. BEWARE- you will pay for data if you go over your data limit, of course, so keep an eye out.
If you not rooted, it limits you down to unlocking it with your isp, rooting your device(then it doesn't matter because you are rooted), or installing a custom rom with tethering included already(generally comes with root as well).
I'm sure there are more options available but those would seem the most direct route at least...
If I'm wrong or anything please feel free to correct me.
Isn't 50 p not the normal data tariff ? Thethering uses data.
You can try FoxFi from the Market. It works wonderfully. If you have unlimited data on your phone like I do, then you can just use that to tether to whatever devices you want to using WiFi.

Teathering is patr of your data plan. You can have up to 5 devices hooked up to your phone, but still have to watch out for going over your data plan
yes
you can if you root your phone and install a wifi tether app, like "wifi tether" or "barnacle". however, it will run off your data plan, so if you have unlimited data then yes it is free, but if you have a data cap, you may need to watch how much data you tether.
Are these apps encrypting your traffic? I would think the carriers can detect tethering based off your traffic.
I have been using FoxFi for more than a year now to tether. You don't need to root your phone, and to your carrier, it just looks like data that your phone itself is using. They can see that you are viewing sites with a desktop/tablet User string, but that's it. Unless they really analyze it, they won't know you are using the tethering app.
