I'm liking the the GB update so far, but I've noticed some quirks. this one is very minor but annoying all the same. when i was on stock rooted froyo, i could toggle gps on and off from my custom widget (elixir). Since the update, both stock and xboarders tweaked, it takes me to location and security settings and i have to check the gps box. is there some setting or trick to skip this pointless step?
This is Google's fault. They made it so applications can't change the gps settings, I'm not sure why.
CM7 and all roms based on its source re-enable this however.

It's a security thing, so that a trojan can't turn on your GPS and transmit your exact location without your knowing about it.

I know it is not a trojan but do applications like Seek Droid or Lookout still work when trying to locate a lost or stolen phone?

Yes, if and only if the gps was already on.

So if you intend to lose your phone, be sure and turn on GPS first!

I need help because my GPS wont lock... I've tried the G2X bloater and installed my region but it still wont lock even after 5 minutes.
EDIT: I'm on Faux's AOSP Rom with his kernel as well.
Do you have the newest baseband? That helped me lock much better.

Just curious if under Settings > Location and Security do you have Use Wireless Networks enabled?

What's the easiest way to install that? Do you have to flash official gb?
Sent from my LG G2x
I'm not familiar with your ROMs, however, I find it helps to have an unobscured view of the horizon in most directions and to not be moving in a car. If that fails, I then use an app called GPS Test by Chartcross Ltd. Go into settings and there are two buttons on the top labeled: Clear AGPS and Update AGPS. Try each of the two buttons.
I just looked up AGPS and here's what Wikipedia has to say, "Assisted GPS, generally abbreviated as A-GPS or aGPS, is a system which can, under certain conditions, improve the startup performance, or time-to-first-fix (TTFF) of a GPS satellite-based positioning system." Hope this helps.

the only way to install the new baseband is by using lgupdate tool, or kdz firmware updater along with the kdz file. try the lgupdate tool first. there are numerous threads explaining the process, which for some is a one click success story. for others, a walk through programming hell. the lgupdate tool is plagued.
Alright thanks everyone. I AM on the newest baseband, but am trying cm7 now

Let us know if this fixes your GPS. My GPS sucks taint too, and will upgrade the baseband if it fixes it, but don't want to risk the possible PITA using the LG tool if it doesn't fix it. Everything else other than battery life is amazing on my phone.

I didn't get instant lock on gb with new baseband. On froyo is super reliable.

I have to reboot my phone to get the GPS to lock about half the time I try to navigate since upgrading to Gingerbread. I have the new baseband. It sucks. I complained again and they finally agreed to ship me a new phone. Not sure that will help anything...
Download from app market gps test, then after you run the gps test go to setings and hit clear agps and also update agps then it should lock under 15 seconds

I've never seen the 'awake' bar look like this. Can anyone explain, is it the wifi? There is nothing out of the ordinary under running services and most of the info on the battery use screen was from this morning, while I was asleep.
Edit: pretty certain it was google backup transport. The 'back up my data' option was selected from a restore I had done. And I was on wifi during the suspicious activity. Made the necessary adjustments, testing now but so far it looks good.

i always disable backup transport when i install the new rom, you should try too. backup transport bounded with android system so you can't watch excatly itself alone because of this.

It's gone. Even went as far as deleting it. However, this morning I think I determined that its the wifi that was giving me the strange 'awake' bar.

Did you clear your data/cache..? (Maps) How's your signal.what GPS are you using
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
I am having a similar issue, but mine takes a good 10 minutes to lock on a signal. This is with a clear sky view and using google maps.
It seems to be getting worse lately. I am on Root66 with the bootloader still locked by the way.
I'm having the same issue as well. It was working like a champ before I flashed CM10.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
I truly think it's because we all know Samsung makes great phones, but they lack in the radio department.mine takes a while sometimes even with a clear view of the sky.I think a good update to fix these radio issues would help out allot, unless our xda community can step in before especially now with an unlocked Bootloader

This fixed my issues as well
I'm also seeing trouble with my gps not locking. It's only been in the last couple days, and I've changed nothing since the time that it had been perfect.
Makes me think there's something satellite or google related?
Download "GPS Test" app from the market. Open the app. Go into settings and clear AGPS, then update AGPS. That worked for me. Try that before you Odin back to stock.

As previously stated, I am NOT using CM10... I tried to download "GPS Test" 5 times and got an error 491 all 5 times (with wifi on or off, did not matter).
EDIT: I restarted my phone and then it downloaded just fine... that is another annoying issue!
GPS
My phone with the stock Rom would generally asquire a GPS lock quickly, but tended to lose it more often than other phones. However, on CM 10 I have had trouble locking as well. For me if I put my phone on the dashboard I usually get a lock in about thirty seconds. I know that doesn't fix it for you, but it is the workaround I've been using so far.
Put a modified gps.conf on.
Use fasterfix and pick a local NTP server.
Turn on google A-GPS (Location services).
It still doesn't lock through objects as well, but it's quick outdoors.

I can confirm that this worked for me as well. Also, when I have locking issues in Maps or Waze, I just launch GPS Test and wait until the "In Use" # of satelittes is 2 or more. When I subsequently go back to Maps or Waze, I get an immediate lock.

I wrote up a lot about this for my previous device, the htc mytouch 4g slide. See this thread for some gps.conf info:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16822068
GPS is a real big deal for me, I use the smartphone to get to/from work daily, and my job takes me all over the country so I am never familiar with where I am.
The SGSIII locks quick and accurately outdoors with only gps turned on for location services.
Totally stock, and haven't put it through it's paces yet, but been wandering around in west virginia all day and it's been great.
Clear view of the sky is necessary for good gps function, so trying to use indoors or even under lots of trees is a stretch.
Outside, maybe in a parking lot or field, would be the best place to try to use gps.

I found that flashing back to the actual verizon f2 build and then rooting without flashing a deodexed stock rom helped to retain gps with other TW roms like beans or synergy.
Right now I still think that CM10 is risky and you might need to flash stock back on your phone if things stop working like they used to.

thanks
I came from the samsung fascinate which had horrible GPS service for the first 6 months. OTA's were sent out to fix it but it never really worked well. I tried all sorts of programs and configs and deleting files, etc, which might have helped some but never great until one of the devs fixed the issue in the kernel. After that I could get instant lock indoors/outdoors/cloudy skies/etc.... super annoying to go back to a crappy GPS.

I tried this app, it didn't work as I had hoped. At first the app was successful at getting a quicker GPS lock than Maps, but after clearing & updating AGPS, it takes even LONGER for it to lock!
Has anyone else found another method to fix this?
PS: my phone is stock.
others have also suggested using Gps Status & Toolbox, similar to Gps Test.

That's my preference for on the fly.
I took a look at the gps.conf file, seems like it could be better then it is stock at first brush.
Not sure how much or often I can give time at the moment, but tweaking it is on my list.

Back in the Dinc days I had tasker start the GPS automatically whenever navigation started...but it doesn't look like that is possible with ICS/JB. I'm running beans 9
Does anybody have any idea on how to get this through tasker or other means? Thanks
Personally, I just leave my gps on all the time...
I don't see why Tasker wouldn't work though...
Sent from my (not really) SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
You can use Tasker, but you also need the Secure Settings app with the Root Helper installed in order for 3rd party apps to modify GPS settings. Why Google restricted it like that in Android 3.0+, I'm really not sure...

So do I, there is no reason not to really.
Leaving GPS on doesn't affect battery life enough to even notice.
Hello,
I have a stock rooted Blaze 4G. In the Settings, I make sure that NFC is enabled, but it does not seem to work. I downloaded a bunch of NFC apps, and none of them could pick up any RFID tags (e.g., parking meters, work badge, US passport, etc). The battery states that it has NFC.
After I rooted my phone, I got rid of a lot of T-Mobile bloatware, so I am wondering whether I could delete something that would affect NFC.
I do not know if it is a software or hardware bug and whether this is a bug at all, so I would really appreciate any suggestions or comments. Thank you.
im running tweaked 1.6 and nfc works for me... you ha e to enable in settings and use an app but i can send bookmarks and contacts and data between phones at least.. i havent found any tags to scan yet...
if youre thinking that you might have dumped some apps that you need, i would reccomend flashing tweaked, it is unbloated and smooth....

I tried Tweaked v1.6, and the NFC still did not work I could still try to flash the stock ROM, but I really doubt it would work either. I guess it is a hardware defect, and unfortunately, I cannot bring it back to T-mobile as I left them a while ago. I do not really use NFC often (apart from SF parking meters), but it is nice to have a fully functioning phone.
nfc on android phones only works with a frequency of 13.56 mhz so perhaps the tags you are scanning are on a dif frequency

The US passport works on 13.56 MHz frequency, but my phone cannot pick it up. Parking meters clearly say NFC, and my phone cannot pick them up either, so I have to enter the long number manually.

my battery says near field communication on it, and the option to turn it on is in wireless and network settings... did you by any chance change your battery?

Yes, the battery is stock, and it says Near Field Communication. I have not tried to use it to communicate between phones, but that is not what I would use it for on a daily basis anyway.
