Power button not working! HELP! - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was using the phone normally and all of a sudden my screen wouldn't turn off when I pressed the power button. I tried for a while and it finally did. For 2 hours after that, 4-5 presses of the power button put my phone to sleep/wake.
Now it's absolutely not responding! I can't even use it to power on my phone(I could do it through usb but I would rather have the power button back working).
HELP!!!

It's not working in recovery either. Can this be deemed as a hardware problem?

yes its hardware problem
give it to samsung care

Apparently the switch was shorted. Got it replaced with the volume down switch for now. A new switch will arrive 2 days from now so my volume down will be back.
Quick question -- Can undervolting cause these kind of problems?
Thanks.

help me!! same happened to me :/ I tried relocking bootloader and I can't. should I send it to Samsung ?

If you have Cyanogen on your Nexus you can apply an option which wakes up your phone with volume buttons

I was on the carbon series rom but then the power button stopped working so I restored to stock rom and was hoping to lock bootloader but while in fastboot mode volume keys don't work either so I can't select anything

You don't have to send it back to Samsung. Go to some electronics service center guy who knows his stuff. They'll just replace the switch.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App

Until then you can use this app called "fix broken power". It'll let you unlock using volume buttons.

Yeah thanks I'd rather get it fixed in one day instead of sending it out

get it fixed at some electronics store. cost me just Rs. 800 (around $17).

@ anirudh- oh ok .....what was the exact problem??

I think I am beginning to suffer from this as well. Sometimes the power button won't respond and then it would randomly (after a few presses mostly) bring up the phone options menu. I am considering sending it back to Samsung for repair.

@ anirudh- i bought the phone from the US. Hence will i able to give the phone for repair in bangalore samsung service centre?

Mine was bought in US too. I went to a local mobile service center and got it done. So not necessarily a Samsung service center. Just take it to any guy who can handle smartphones. There's bound to be quite a lot in Bangalore.
My problem? Power button didnt respond until 4-5 presses and eventually died out. The guy said the power button switch got shorted. No idea how and why. Got a new switch and replaced it.

Qick OT: WTF is wrong with those power buttons in nexus devices?! N1 had issues with power button too!
Sorry for OT, I had to share my thoughts on this

@ anirudh- do you know any place in bangalore where they can replace the power button??
also how do i root my phone?

For rooting check the development forum here. It's pretty easy. As for repair, I've no idea about service centers in Bangalore. Sorry.

I gave it to the samsung service centre..he said that its a motherboard problem and i also gave it to a local person in national market..he also said the same thing that it could not be repaired.
so what should be done???

Power button not working...

I woke up this morning to find the power button on my nexus s unresponsive... I wishfully thought that it was an internal problem and proceeded to wipe, but I had no luck with that. I am currently using an app off of the market that allows you to unlock the phone using the volume buttons, but I would prefer to have the original power button repaired in one way or another. Does anyone know what i should do about this?
I would take it back to a sprint store and ask for repair or replacement. And be sure to unroot and all that good stuff.

I feared this is the only advice i would get... And i dont have a ns4g
thanks anyway though.
If you turn off your phone, how do you turn it back on without a working power button? If that still works, I would think it was a software issue and would revert to a OEM system.

Power Button issue (hardware)

My power button at first seemed like it was being affected by the screenshot bug (i.e. one press, the screen would turn off and then back on) but it eventually got to the point where it won't work at all and almost seems stuck. When I take the battery out and put it back in, the phone turns on immediately, as if it's being pressed. Any way I can clean or maybe tinker with the button without hurting it?
Right now I'm using the button remapper and leaving the power button as power, and volume up as power as well. I tried to disable the power button altogether, but then my phone crashes and I have to reflash the rom to get back to working...
See my post in the General forum.

I had the same problem last week.Phone repaired in HTC service center for free. They changed big flat cable.....Hope this helps you....
Yeah, I went ahead and dug into it some more, got straight down to the power button itself, and I think the ribbon cable or the button itself must have gone bad. So for now I went a head and removed the button so it won't bother me. Now I find out they don't even sell replacements yet Dx haha, opps.
I would send it to HTC but I'd rather take care of this in my own way that way 1. I don't have to flash to stock, etc. and 2. because I don't feel like being without my baby.
Thanks for the help ^.^
EDIT:...opps. Forgot I kinda need the button to you know...turn the phone on. Glad I got adb lol.
It's a hardware problem, not software, so return it to the reseller or let HTC pick it up at home for you so they can repair it
Does anybody know when they're going to be selling replacement power buttons? Like I said, I'd really rather just keep my phone instead of sending it off...too much hassle for me.

HELP... Need replacement Power Button

I was given a brand new s3 that came without a power button... I'm not trying to FRU it out since it's brand new. I've found replacement power buttons all over the net but none listed for the Verizon version of the phone. Does anyone know it a s3 sprint power button will work on the Verizon s3?
I believe that the S3 is the same no matter what carrier it's on. Can someone back this up?

Your phone is still under warranty with Samsung. Just contact them directly and they'll fix it for free. Manufacturers warranty is 12 months.

There's another thread here on basically the same topic. I had a power button fall off my first VZW GS3, and the 2nd one decided it would start booting every once in a while after less than a month - unfortunately after a few more days "every once in a while" became every five to ten minutes. Enter CLN #2 (my 3rd total), which arrived with the power button missing (I found it in the bottom of the box). Before I could get it going the volume rocker fell off in my hands, so I made a call to VZW business tech support and convinced them to ship me another new unit.
This one seems to be working just fine, but of course - I keep those buttons captive using an Otterbox "Commuter" series case, now. When I first bought the phone those cases weren't shipping yet, and it took them about 6 weeks to get the pretty "Sky Blue" one ready, so I was using the stock Verizon case/holster - and it tended to push on the power button and volume rocker any time you needed to do a battery pull.

Power button magically stopped working

Out of nowhere my power button magically no longer works. Kind of a huge deal since I use my phone for work a TON. At first I thought it was the ROM but then I rebooted into recovery and discovered it doesn't work in there either...... but by some sort of miracle though my phone magically boots itself up when I swap batteries in it....
I am rooted and running Beans 20.
Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated!!

You can get an app called button savior from Google play that allows you to create on screen keys to turn off your screen.
Various xposed modules allow you to remap your physical keys. If you don't know about the xposed framework I highly suggest looking into it.
Furthermore I believe some custom roms have key mapping built in.

My power button just started malfunctioning too. I'm on Odin barebones 4.1.2 stock and the problem persists.
It sounds like a lot of people are getting this problem. If you use that knowledge to your advantage, I've heard people convince Samsung it's a manufacturing problem and got it repaired outside of Warranty. The power button itself is sautered onto the motherboard, so unless you really trust a mobile repair company, best option is work directly with Samsung.
That being said, I'm going to look for an Xposed Framework module that can remap the power button.
I looked for one, didn't really find what I was looking for... selling mine on ebay now to pay for my new phone...

Wow. My power button just stopped working also.
My phone is stock.
I did replace the glass myself a couple months ago and it's been working fine until about a week ago. Was wondering if that had anything to do with it.
Interesting to see I'm not the only one having issues.
Kind of timely now that the S5 is coming out this week.

This is happening to a lot of people. I'm sure the s4 will start having this problem followed by the s5 after a year and some months. Im done with samsung phones until they start using different parts. Actually thinking about the next nexus phone and hack a msata drive into it with a custom vacume formed case. The only reason I haven't owned one is because of the storage limitation. I think a 200+ gigabyte msata strapped to the back would fix that problem.

Hey guys, mine originally starting messing up on Saturday, and then Sat night and all day Sun is was fine, and now it is doing it again. I even installed a new rom and it is still doing it so now I am convinced it is purely physical and not rom-related. What are you guys going to do?
I have the Wireless Phone Protection for my phone and am thinking about using that to my advantage to get a new device....question is I've never done it before. If I say I have a physical problem with my phone then won't Verizon want it returned? That will make me have to unroot it and bring it back to out of box state which is a big headache. What if I just say I lost it or it got stolen? Am I better off going that route?
EDIT: Also forgot to mention that along with these power button issues my S3 also will not reboot on its own. If I select Reboot (be it from the power button menu, notification pulldown, etc) it will just shut off and not reboot.....but if I yank the battery and put it back in it will then reboot to recovery. Same deal if I do a normal reboot, haven to yank and replace battery. You guys having these issues too?
So a couple of days ago my power button started acting wonkie as well. I would push it and it basically acted sticky. I would push once but it would register twice or as a long press. Either turning the screen on and off or bring up the reboot menu. So I did the xposed button remapping. Worked pretty well, but if I restarted the phone it would do a weird haptic feedback thing every couple of seconds before finally booting up.
So I wasn't satisfied with just living with it being a hardware issue. So I downloaded latest cleanrom to flash from cm11. I rebooted recovery and now it just vibrates every couple of seconds. Would not make it to twrp. It will get to cm Samsung boot screen but then just goes back to vibrating black screen. I took out battery and popped out power button but same results.
Any suggestions? Think power button can be fixed by repair shop or is it time to go back to my trusty droid incredible until I can upgrade.

It can be fixed. There is also a way of temporarily making the power button work but I don't feel like explaining it again. If you do some searching there are at least 20 threads that have the temp fix in it.

[Q] Device in bootlloop + Can't access bootloader!!! HELPPPP

My Nexus 5 is stuck on the splash screen. I have multirom installed so when i boot after the splash screen the multirom menu comes up. I select to boot the ROM but it never does. The splash screen shows up again and then the screen goes blank. When this happened I was doing nothing but just casual chatting on Whatsapp. I have been stuck many times and most of the times when multirom was installed. I always solved this by flashing factory image by booting into bootloader. But i can't even get to hold it in the bootloader. It just goes blank like the instance above. Please help!!!!!
Press and hold the power button for 20.seconds and see if it boots correctly then

I wish I could. I have written in the OP that the device doesn't stay at the bootloader. If there is any other way please guide me.
Press and hold the power button for 20, which should turn the device off.
then once its off, press and hold the power + vol up + vol down.
if you get there, flash the factory images using fastboot.

You could try the secondary bootloader, hold both vol keys + power. But it sounds to me like hardware failure and rma may be in your future.

I always thought that pressing both vol keys and power gets into secondary bootloader so I always used that, so in shot yes I was talking about the secondary bootloader in the OP. Just to be clear primary bootloader is by holding power and vol - key and plug into PC right? Even this didn't work for me. I just get a second to either go press vol up or down when the bootloader shows up. So either it shuts down or it restarts into the bootloader.

Does it stays in download mode?
Press and hold power key for 15-20 secs to turn off your phone.
Press and hold volume_up key then connect the phone to the pc. You can release the the volume_up key if you see the Download mode screen.
If it stays in download mode then follow my guide about flash stock rom with LG flashtool. Link in my signature.
Guys I guess I got it figured. I guess my power button is stuck. Well it doesn't look so physically but it sure acts that way. For example, when I get into the bootloader for a second and I either press the vol up or down key, as soon as the second is over the option on-screen (power off or restart bootloader) is selected (i.e. the power button is implemented), and the device either powers off or restarts into bootloader. So I flicked my finger on it few times, once it booted normally but then again it looped and once the charging screen was shown and then it again looped. Can anyone suggest some solution?

If your power button is sticking, then you or a service depot have to fix it. There's nothing else to be done except physically fixing it.

Since warranty is borked get a cutter, small piece of quality electrical tape ( to keep button up; TEMPORARY FIX ONLY!)) plastic Credit card and miniature Philips screwdriver and use your imagination I did it myself without any previous knowledge using this BELOW LINKED guide and my brain it's FAIRLY easy if your are careful with connectors and don't screw anything else.
https://www.ifixit.com/Device/Nexus_5
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YzUj3fpI994
Vid about power button rattle fix (usefull for dissasembly):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ego0eXYwOms
check the teardown and stuff the little strips (1-2 mm squares) of tape with trial and error like kinda sort of a O-ring under the power button the ceramic key must "float" over the edges pieces of tape this IS VERY TRICKY it can be time consuming be patient you can use different material tape but I tried cloth etc and figured out 3M electrical tape was the best due to its softness and thickness... worked for me until I got my new untampered N5 ... good luck and use a clean desk for the sake of not losing parts! And before reassembling make sure you got just enough movement to press the beforementionned power key if you don't you'll have to re-open it and each time it's like asking the devil to kick your butt!
The more you will open it the worst the backdoor WILL GET LOOSE (battery cover pins are weak 3-4 times is kinda max X you can open it before getting loose) your can order B/Whites ones from them for 25$
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Whit...ing-Battery-Door-Vibrator-OEM/1694272462.html
Link is for white backdoor black are real easy to find and RED are more than 40$ everywhere still...
Good luck to all!
