[Q] Ad-hoc mode support in HoneyComb 3.2 - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all
Is ad-hoc mode supported in Honeycomb 3.2? For me it's the only way when tether with my old Windows Mobile 6.5...
Thanks!

would be nice if somebody answered this question .... ?
it's come up a couple of times since the update without response.
as a side-note, if anybody has managed to internet-tether through a wm6.5 phone (like my htc hd2) either by wifi or bluetooth * WITHOUT RE-FLASHING THE PHONE TO ANDROID * (not interested in doing that) then how did you make it work?
ironically (and frustratingly), my older WM6 htc tytn II (kaiser) internet-tethers with the asus via bluetooth straight out of the box, so it can be done.

I can confirm that after Update to Honeycomb 3.2 my HTC LEO(WM6.5.x) can
share data (Internet)over Wifi-Router!
Test it few minutes before

fantastic news! and thanks for the report. i've been vacillating about whether to accept the 3.2 update. this tips the balance for me.

ahhhah! this rocks!!!
From the start this update was kind of disappointed for me... until now: with these great news it's more balanced (the lag's stock browser will kick me the ass for sure, I don't know what is the reason for leaving this bug unresolved )
Thanks a lot for your time leonore

I assume I'm doing something wrong but I'm using non rooted 3.2 and when I tried to see if I could use it with Joiku on my Nokia the Transformer would not see the hotspot, although my laptop had no problem connecting to it. If adhoc is working is there some setting that has to be changed for it to see it?

My Tf does NOT support ad-hoc. Stock 3.2.

I have not heard anything from the release notes anywhere about Android 3.2 now supporting Ad-Hoc networks. But to the OP, I tried everything to get my WM6.5 phone to tether to my GTab 6 months ago and never could get it to work properly because my WMWifiRouter program on my WinMo phone created a Ad-Hoc network. I could connect to any laptop but no Android systems. In the end, I just went and bought a new Android phone and tethering was a breeze. I never looked back...

this is weird. Leonore, how do you share the connection with the phone? what software are you using? the only way I know with a WM is WMrouterwifi. I haven't the last version but I guess it only supports ad-hoc mode...

Bye the way, you can easily share your wm6 internet through Bluetooth with WMWifiRouter. It works great!

really? I read TF was unable to connect via bluetooth due to some sort of limitation in the driver (something like ad-hoc case) . I'll give it a try right now.
Do you have some special configuracion / software on TF? are you rooted?

I never tried tethering through Bluetooth just because of the speed limitation. I guess if you just needed a quick fix but it brings back the old memories of 14.4k dial-up... lol

Bluetooth's 2.0 data rate is around 2 Mbits, quite low but enough for me as a temporal access. I'll use it only on vacations time, in my summer place. It's a very little town and in that place 3g really sucks.

uaah! I tried it and it works like a charm!!! without additional software in the TF, and the battery drains slower than wifi.
I guess this way is easier than wifi, there is no need to configure DHCP, the only thing is the pin code.
This saved the day pal, I was very displeased with the missing support for ad-hoc in 3.2. For me it's a very basic feature.
Thanks a lot Dauntless!

I'm using Barnacle Wifi Tether on my Xperia X10 and my TF tethers to it just fine.
I'm also using "Auto-Tether" and I'd highly recommend it; it allows you to enable tethering and to turning tethering on and off from the TF...very handy...you don't even have to take your phone out of the holster!
EDITED TO CORRECT; I just realized that I wasn't REALLY able to connect; I had to use the special WPA_supplicant file here on XDA...so the answer is....nope....not until you root and use that replacement WPA file.

hang on, so you are saying the stock hd2 wifi router app doesn't work but what does work is some unspecified cooked rom of yours?
what have you done to make it work then?
re. bluetooth tethering, this definitely does not work on the hd2 using wmwifirouter (BT option greyed-out) or ny any other means that i can fathom.
as i said BT DOES work with my old wm6 tytn II, both in wmwifirouter and directly via the OS.

can anybody else confirm ad-hoc wifi tethering now working in 3.2?

can anybody else confirm ad-hoc wifi tethering now working (or not) in 3.2?

I just checked and I still cannot see ad-hoc networks from the TF running 3.2. So, it is confirmed that 3.2 still does NOT support ad-hoc networks.

Internet Connection Sharing over WiFi

I desperately need to get ICS over WiFi working. I've tried WMWiFiRouter, but it either keeps giving me 'Fatal Error' or the connection drops off the moment the PC connects to it. I've also tried ICSControl.exe, a program that someone on XDA has created, but I just couldn't figure out how to get things going with that (or I'm too dumb).
Could someone please tell me the easiest way to get my data connection working on my laptop over Wifi? I'm using Raphael with the stock rom.
Cheers
its built in i think in the commanager last option. but it is set to bluetooth pan standard if i am correct.
you can try use advanced config 3.1 and goto data connections.. change private interface for internet sharing to wlan.
i was surprised to see Advanced Config had the option there. But it still doesn't work
I changed the private interface from the default of 'Custom' to WLAN11g1 and it asks me to soft-reset the device, which i did. Then I go into Internet Sharing, and I still only get 'USB' or 'Bluetooth PAN' as options. Am i missing something?
there is another wlan option in there.
i have no idea how this is supposed to work :/
one would think that setting this option would set the setting to wlan as supposed to. not sure if you should change it or not afterwards with the connectionsharingsettingstab. it probably overwrites the value in registry.
here is something you can try :
turn on wifi
set the option in adv config to TnetWln1
reset
turn on this wifi AP application and try using it
WMwifiRouter
Just tried WMwifiRouter on my Touch Pro and it worked fine
Works fine for me too. Takes all the hassle out of it!

2 questions:
1) Which network are you with? If your connection works but stops when you get ICS to try to connect, it may be blocked by your network if a) you are not allowed to use your mobile as a modem and/or b) ICS is not allowed. Does your connection work with standard email/web?
2) Why sharing your connection over wifi when BT pan works so well and so easily and you only need to share with your laptop? I use wifi when the laptop can connect directly to a router/hotspot, otherwise I use BT Pan. There is no real speed compromise as the bottleneck is the 3G connection itself), and BT 2.0 EDR offers a wide enough bandwidth for what you want to do. I use skype on my laptop with my 3G connection shared over BT PAN and it works a treat (that is, better than Skype 2.2 on WM!).
I'm probably missing something....

ICS has nothing to do with your carrier. It works the same way on your phone as it does on the pc. it merely routes the gateway to the devices connected to the ICS network.
I myself have a TP and use ICS with Softbank (softbank roms do not contain ICS) and it works fine.
I agree with you however, when it comes to bluetooth. Even if your PC doesnt have BT, it is well worth it to buy one of those nifty mini adapters.
they are so tiny, you wont even see them. But easy to setup and fast enough.
im with 3. nomal mail / web works fine. there are no restrictions by the network for ics. as for the BT question, I dont have BT on my laptop. it has built in wifi and i want to use that. i also have a mac n have never managed 2 get BT PAN working with os x.
Can't get BT pan to work with Vista either. My laptop does not "find" the HTC Touch pro as a pan enabled phone.
latest version works ok
Mod Edit: Attachment removed by request from the author.
the latest version is 1.10 not 0.94. have tried it with not much luck

Version 0.91 is the last "free" version of the program. It is no longer free and it's version number has changed as well, version 1.11 is the latest.

First make sure you have no active BT connection, either on your desktop/laptop or on the TP (i.e. BT Headset).
You need to go to Comm Manager (BT switched on of course!), select BT Options (lower right menu), Mode, and select "make this device visible to other devices".
Once you've setup a partnership, it will probably say "connection denied" on the first connection.
Don't be as dumb as me, got to internet sharing (all programs) and select BT Pan and Connect... Then try to connect BT Pan again...
It *should* work (works a treat on my Vista 32 desktop and my Sony TZ11 Laptop, I get around 400-500kbps down and a bit less up).
BT PAN
I followed your directions exactly, but the problem remains. I get however once the phone pairs with the laptop (HP tx2000) a request for the "Bluetooth peripheral device" driver. I can't find this driver so it has probably something to do with this.
Maybe you should try IcsControl.
It's free and works great.
Id go wmwifirouter route. I have never had good luck with icscontrol never could get it to work and it pissed me off instead

You need to update the bluetooth driver for your laptop. Check the manufacturer (in, the device manager), usually widcomm or toshiba, and try to get it from their website if HP doesn't provide it (although they should). Vista drivers usually work, but I guess you're using XP? It may be worth checking on HP website to see if their offer updated BT drivers for your laptop.

I've tried both versions of the program (free old V0.91 and trial for the commercial V1.11).
They both work with the Touch Pro (tried with my Vaio TZ11).
V1.11 is however around 20% faster (I get an average of 500kbps with V0.91, and consistently above 600kbps down with the V1.11).
So the old version gives about the same bandwidth as my BT Pan (without the convenience of sharing between more than one client), while the V1.11 seems to be better optimised and provides better bandwidth.
The response time is around 100ms for both (against around 140ms for BT Pan). Upstream is around 300kbps for both version , against 400kbps for BT Pan.
This is on a UK T-Mobile HSDPA connection, with 3/4 bars signal strength (could those who manage to get it to work let us know if they get better figures?).
You should obviously get much better with Vodafone in a 7.2Mbps area like London/Major airports.

HTC CM Wifi Internet Sharing - doesn't work?

Hi,
Now that I've unlocked my TG01, I was hoping to use my data SIM in it and convert it to a MiFi, one of those portable WiFi access points.
I have tried HTC CM Wifi Internet Sharing which installs fine on the phone. It also seems to run and looks like it has set up an ad-hoc network.
However, there are a few problems:
The WiFi does not automatically turn on when you launch the program.
None of my WiFi enabled devices (PCs, phones, internet tablets) can 'see' the WiFi access point.
I'm just wondering whether this is because the program isn't really working, or has something to do with my other devices.
Anyone have success with this program?
Hey i use WMWifi Router app on my tg01 but it is only a trail
i successfully installed cm wis but can't seem to get on internet. i don't know what else to try. the help file on the program doesn't offer much help. any suggestions? or is there another program like this? i can see and connect to the access point just can't get on net

Miro im using your ROM release but for the life of me cant get the wifi sharing to work, well it works and it doesnt. I can see the connection on my laptop and i've managed to connect only the internet doesnt work and it says 'identifying ... no internet access' ? This is under Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. Any ideas ?
i´m now in this moment take wifi router from my TG01 to connect the internet with my Win7 32bit Laptop. i think the problem is not TG01- the Problem is you network/firewall settings
best internet sharing you have in marketplace for free, work veary good. sorry for my bad eanglish
I've only just got the htc wifi sharing app to work properly, but if you ask me its not so great. The reason why i struggled so much to get it to work in the past is that you have to keep resetting your data conection until suddenly it works ? Even then i find it goes off every 10 mins so your constantly turning your data connection on and off which isnt very convenient. I suppose its nice to be able to set up wifi as a hotspot but for me i just cant use it ...
Instead i've started using the usb method with the windows internet sharing app, this never resets and is a proper solid and stable connection. I've even bridged it to the ps3 and managed to play online games with it. The only issue of course is the NAT type, for any sort of gaming to work you need port forwarding at the very least and since were only getting nat type 3 theres quite a few issues.
I have found a nice app called ICS Control which claims to be able to manage ports, etc but i havent quite figured out how it works. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=377047 Any ideas ?

Not sure why the wifi comm manager isnt working for you but id recommend trying miro's rom, the one which allows you to switch between sense, spb, and windows default. This is the only rom i've managed to get wifi sharing working on so id really recommend you try miro's rom .
On another subject, i was wondering if anyone knows of a way to share my tg01's internet connection to the pc but give it a static ip address. The problem with sharing without a static ip is certain sites recognise your ip has changed and log you out. Lets say i've wrote a huge message on and my ip changes, i click submit and that message is lost for good ! Its getting quite annoying since this constantly happens on ebay and pretty much any site that requires a log in, i've had to start copying and pasting my text just in case.

[Q] Not able to connect to Motorola Xoom to HD2 WiFi hotspot.

I love my Motorola Xoom. It is almost a perfect device, but the only thing that is destroyng my pleasure is my not being able to connect to my phone's hot stop. I have downloaded "Mobile Wi-Fi Router from the OMarket. I am able to connect to my phone through my desktop PC, but MyXoom tablet is not able to find it. Please fellow Xoomers help me fix my problem.
I was having the same problem.
The old WiFi tethers broadcast in ad-hoc networks, which android can't see.
I downloaded the newest version of WiFi Tether and it can broadcast in infrastructure mode and my Xoom was able to connect to that.
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
Drains the battery on my Epic pretty quick though.
I check the post but I do not see a download for a HD2. Do you know how my phone might be able to work? Thank you.
I just used the v3.0 one and it works perfectly on HD2 - no problem connecting to WiFi hotspot
I downloaded the app on my HD2, but the app is not compatible. Is it possible you could walk me through? Thank you.
IIRC I just downloaded it and side-installed the apk as one would any standard application. I think you probably need to be rooted however. What rom are you running on your HD2?
I am running the original 6.5 windows mobile.
That explains things - the application is an Android app as denoted by the .apk extension and therefore won't install on WM 6.5.
I left WM roms far behind. As soon as Cotulla released his magldr and the first NAND Android rom (31/12/10) I've never used another WM rom. Just flash your HD2 to a NANDroid rom and problem solved. If you want to stick with WM though you will have to look for another solution that runs on WM.
I'm not sure that there are any WM WiFi solutions that use infrastructure mode as it seems they only work in ad-hoc mode. If you don't want to flash your phone then you will need to get the Xoom to recognise an ad-hoc connection. I have seen some posts on this forum of people trying to do this but AFAIK they haven't succeeded yet.

Same here. I bounced back and forth between WinMo and Android on my HD2 during the SD card months, but when Magldr came out I went green and never looked back. Still, while I was in WinMo I looked and looked for a ROM that could do infrastructure mode (for my PS3, Wii, etc.) and had no success. It has to be enabled at the driver-level, and it looks like the newer Android drivers for the wifi chip in the HD2 support infrastructure mode and the old WinMo drivers don't. To make matters more depressing, the drivers aren't open source (as far as I can find) they're only distributed as binary modules, so we can't easily tweak the driver to enable the mode in WinMo.
Short answer, while nothing is impossible - this may as well be. Welcome to Cyanogen Mod 7, my friend.

Ad-hoc WiFi connections now supported apparently - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033314
The solution is upgrading to Windows Phone 7 which has WIFI that transmits in infrastructure mode or if someone here is kind enough to create a downloadable WM7 WIFI Reuter cab compatible with Windows Mobile 6.5.

googled that before, I can find PC to PC and mostly for windows XP, but nothing on how to create a bluetooth bridge to the transformer ):

Did you have any success in the end?
My Transformer's just arrived, and I'd like to tether to my rooted Hero, but can't figure it out.
If I choose WiFi mode, the Transformer can't see the Hero in the list of WiFi networks.
If I choose Bluetooth mode, I can pair the devices, but then what? How to I create the network connection? In Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Tethering & portable hotspot I turned on Bluetooth tethering, but it's not clear to me if that's to allow the Transformer to be the hotspot (i.e. server instead of client).
(Running VillainROM v13 on my Hero)
This has been a problem for many of us....it has been discussed in a few other threads also. Honeycomb (by default) won't connect to adhoc wifi networks.
I will donate to anyone who can create a hassle-free turnkey solution for this. Many of us have Android phones that are rooted, so a solution would benefit many. And I am using a Tilt 2, whose Android ROMs do not support BT. So this tethering solution needs to support wifi.

I'm also using wireless teather, only I am feathering it via wifi. It works fine.
Success!
I reverted my Hero to the previous ROM I was using, FroydVillain 1.7.2, and now I have Bluetooth tethering working.
Once the devices are paired, on the Transformer screen in the Bluetooth settings, where the Hero shows up, there's a spanner/wrench icon - when I clicked that I got the option to tether to it - this option didn't show up when I was using VillainRom v13.
I may try going back to VillainRom to see if it was something unconnected, such as rebooting the phone, which made the difference.
UPDATE: I went back to VillainRom v13 (Android 2.1) and it still failed to tether with Bluetooth. An Android 2.1 vs Android 2.2 issue, perhaps?
Can anyone else with a 2.1/eclair and 2.2/froyo device confirm this?
Have the same problem CM7(2.3.3)
WiFi or Bluetooth doesn't work.
I don't think we should see the "problem" as our phones. The issue is that Honeycomb (whether on the Transformer or Xoom or whatever) does not recognize ad hoc wifi connections. If that is addressed, this will be solved for everyone.

Here is what I did:
1. Disabled the WiFi on Transformer.
2. Enable WiFi-Tether on Phone (with Bluetooth and check the discoverable option in the settings before you start tethering).
3. Enable Bluetooth on Transformer and scan for devices. (If you already have it, unpair it first).
4. Pair with your phone.
5. Press the Wrench icon beside the phone (that says paired but not connected) on Transformer.
6. You will find a new option called Tethering. Press it and you're done.
Agagin, that's what I did and it worked for me perfectly. I have CM7 on my phone.
By the way, this exact method didn't work on my wife's Sprint LG Optimus S. Tried everything, but no way...
Hope this helps...

I guess Bluetooth is better than nothing, but supposedly there is a hack to get a Xoom to work with ad-hoc, so must be a way to get our Transformers to work with it as well. Guess we just need to play the waiting game. Cant wait to see what options we have in another month. I have the HTC Hero with CM7 and the Transformer, same issues with no tethering, though since im not a bluetooth fan, I really havent tried it yet. Wifi tether works fine with my ubuntu/windows laptops though.
How about USB tethering? Is that an option with our phones and the transformer?

Ad hoc tether is an issue for droid and lots of info can be found on the net and xda.
I have got a hero running villain rom v13 and can run wifi tether with a modified wpa_supplicant file.
See this post
Download the modded wpa_supplicant file, copy to /system/bin, set the permissions as shown and you can then see and tether to your ad hoc hero - dont forget to backup the original file(rename by adding .bak to file and copy to your sd card)
Obviously you need root.

Can anyone else with a 2.1/eclair and 2.2/froyo device confirm this?

Bluetooth tethering works fine for me using HTC Hero GSM, Wireless tether for root app, rooted using Android 2.2.1, CM6.2 based Elelinux Speedmachine V3. My TF is UK/WW version 8.2.3.13, bluetooth V6.1.2.
Confirmed Ad-hoc wifi doesn't work.

[Q] Tether transformer to Blackberry

I searched the forum, googles etc, but couldn't find a way to use my BB torch and tether my TF. The Bluetooth paired just fine, but pdanet doesn't work. I think honeycomb need a DUN caller or something like that. Any idea guys?
I am interested in this as well.
I'm interested as well. My Transformer arrives in the next couple of days so I'll be tinkering with this. I have a BlackBerry Curve 8530 through Verizon (tethering plan as well). I'll post something here if I find out how to do it.
I've not found an answer yet.
Anyone gotta clue ?
Cheers,

Has there been any progress on this yet?
Doesn't Support DUN
Honeycomb (3.1) does not currently support Bluetooth DUN, which how the Blackberry tethers through Bluetooth. However, PDAnet might come through for you and/or an android update.

HC supports BT PAN. Edit: didn't realize BBs only support BT DUN.

So we are we are out of luck.
Hi, I was able to successfully connect my tf with pdanet tablet and curve 9300 pdanet 2.3.. going through the instructions on pdanet tablet beta1 setup proxy and had previously pair both device. Initially I failed but after tinkering on the bb side which is to disable bt dun (bb was on os 6.0) in options>services uncheck dial up it worked. Unfortunately no data is being transferred. Perhaps its my bb subscription restriction, can anybody give a shot? Thanks!
