We've talked about it in the past, but I thought I would bring this topic back up for my fellow Sensation owners on TMOUS. T-Mobile still has in their system their old "Android Preferred Data Plan". It costs $20 a month and has a 5 Gb soft cap. They give it to loyal T-Mobile customers, but only if you ask. I think they even do it for some newer subscribers. Never hurts to try. Just call up customer service and ask for retentions. Politely ask about the Android Preferred Data Plan and if they can apply it to your account. They have the power and can easily do it.
-Edit-
I removed information about the soft cap being ignored as it seems T-Mobile has been busy and enforcing the caps now.
Ok well I just did it took me less that 5 mins thanks.

Is this a 4G plan?
If I remember correctly, I was payin about 20 (19.99) for my data but was asked to upgrade with sensation so I can get 4G speed.
Thx for the info OP

Yeah it's 4g as long as your area has it. All their Android data plans work at any speed. The plan does NOT determine the speed, only your location and device.
-Edit-
Customer service reps that refer to "4g plans" don't know what they are talking about. Same if they tell you you need a "3g SIM". The SIM nor the plan have anything to do with the actual speeds we see. I'm still using my old "2g" SIM and I get 4-7Mbps regular speeds.

I have it. However, I just activated a third line for my Sensation. They would not apply it to that line... Only for my first two lines (which I've had FOREVER) they gave it to me....when the girl applied it though only my primary line kept the 5GB cap. My second line got downgraded to 2GB. I had to call back and get it fixed. Also, I did receive a throttling message (on my Nexus S) but DID NOT see a change in speeds.....

I wonder if I have unlimited data.... I have an even more plan with unlimited 4g speeds. I have received the 5gb cap but never noticed the speeds.
My plan is data and text (400 texts/mo) for 24.99/mo and no soft cap. I had to get a senior rep/coach on the line to approve the price and package the first week when I bought the Sensation.
But this is a great alternative! Thanks for the heads up!

I have this thread in one browser and my T-Mobile account in the second browser in the background. I've been going over 5 Gb for a long time now and never see any change in my speeds.

op, are you sure about the plan not having a soft cap?
I was under the impression the preferred android unlimited plan was always capped at 5gb... it's a soft cap mind you so sometimes if you go over you won't get throttled.
either way, still a great plan.
I love this plan very much and it's one of the main reasons why I'm still with Tmo.
anyone saying they dont offer it is a liar or doesnt know what they are talking about
you may have to call back until you find someone who can help you

The way to get around data throttling is to have a friend that works at TMO and use their unused $5 employee data only plan. I now effectively have 5 more GB on a spare SIM card. Once I get throttled on my MT4G I start tethering on my MT3G.

There is no way around the cap. It is done of T-Mobiles servers and linked to your SIM card. Many people have tried to get around it without any luck.

I can dig what you're saying but I'd like to think of it as being resourceful rather than cheap. After all it is android, several exploits and loopholes exist for other devices already. Ill keep fishing and maybe I can figure it out. Maybe IP/MAC spoofing would work to avoid the asshats at T-Mobile.

thats what i did lol theres your throttle fix.
It's not a work-around to the T-Mobile cap exactly. But by fine tuning when and how your installed apps use data, can keep you under the cap. For example instead of streaming podcast with Mediafly I installed DogCatcher. I set the download permissions for the application to only update when connected to WiFi and plugged in.
That alone has cut my data usage in half. Fine tuning other settings in apps like email, facebook and twitter have also cut down my data usage. I went from always bumping the data cap to moving to the next lowest data rate plan.
Something to consider!

im not being cheap at all!! but is it possible i can up to the 10GB/ month? i just started a 2 yr contract 2 months ago and i get capped everymonth so far to 56k speeds...i pay 100 dollars a month and i think thats alot already! thats no fun when i dont get access to wifi everywhete like most of you.
If you change your phone number & get a new SIM chip it resets yer data usage. Setup google voice, get 5GIG plan - wait 2 weeks & spend $15 to have phone number changed and get another 5Gig. Two more weeks, billing cycle starts over, another 5GIG. Wait 2 more weeks and change phone number again - 5 more gig. Repeat every month. If you use google voice then everyone will still have your phone number. I think to get the 10gig plan it's 30 bucks so this saves you 15 bucks a month. Of course its also a huge pain in the ass for 15 bucks.
Lol that's actually pretty damn clever. A huge undertaking, but still clever. Well done.

If it adversely affects me then It will give me reasons to look else where when I get to re-up again.

I'm not spreading bad information. Go to your local (corporate) Sprint store and ask for a hard copy of your contract. It states 5GB on Sprint network, 300MB roaming. The compliance department will only get involved if your line is flagged. Only 2 ways I'm aware of to get flagged, #1 roam excessively (voice, data, or both) for 3 consecutive months, #2 use excessive Sprint bandwidth on a congested tower, or area for 3 consecutive months.
Your bandwidth cap DOES NOT change with the tethering add-on; you are just notified without a hard copy of the existing caps.
It's not Sprint actually supplying DATA services to the towers, but another ISP that sells bandwidth to Sprint. I know that only because I've had to upgrade some hardware at the Notre Dame Campus Sprint antennas, and the internet connection was supplied by Comcast.

Sprint may not have very good coverage but I can use all the unlimited unthrottled data I want . Not trying to rub it in (cause I used yo have AT&T and got throttled and capped) just saying it was a good switch for me.
Yep had sprint for a few years and recently switched to At&t, the switch was night and day. I Showed my phone to a friend that still has sprint and he was amazed at how fast thing were loading especially YouTube videos and I wasn't even on At&t lte. I don't have an unlimited plan so I don't get throttled and average 1.3gbs per month so I'm good.
