I've never had an Android phone, but something tells me the Captivate won't be the phone to have for 2 years.
But is it worth getting for 200 dollars? To mess around with and experiment with? I mean I'd use it as my main phone and all, but it's gotten such bad press, I'm not sure what to think of it. Not to mention the guy I am buying it from is switching to Sprint or Verizon because of a lack of HTC Android Phones on ATT.
So, should I go for it? It is a brand new Galaxy S, or a refurbished one... I don't know actually. It is in a box that was sent to him to replace his bricked Galaxy S from when he canceled an update.
And, is the GPS really that bad? Considering my Touch Pro's GPS is horrible, I don't expect much!
Off contract? Yes.
If I could switch to Verizon, Sprint, or T-Mobile, I'd be goner than gone.
Go for it. It's a good deal.

Any chance you will share where you can get this phone for $200 off contract. I paid that for min on contract. I would love to get one for my wife but she has another year before she is eligible for an upgrade.
If you go to at&t's site, login and try to buy this phone without a contract they will charge you over $400.
hehe. i'm just gonna pay the breach of contract and switch to sprint for the evo or the epic. not sure wich, but i'm tossing mine up on craigs list. oh, and overstock.com is advertising them for .01 with new contract...
Paid $120 for mine after I called AT&T and told them that my crenelation is less than $100 or they can sell me the new phone for $120. The never thought twice and overnighted the phone to me for the $120.
I paid 230 for mine the first week it came out. I eventually went to best buy and got 80 bucks from them when they put it on sale
I paid $200 for mine. Totally worth it.
Coming from an x10 user, this phone is really good. Of course there is better, there always is hurting the price that you're getting is really good too.

This forum helped me a lot answering my question so now it's time for me to contribute a little to it.
I don't know about new activations, I'm just talking about my case which is an upgrade and I've been with T-mobile for 5 years already.
My contract has ended for a while so now it's time for an upgrade and I waited for this fone as the GS2 takes too long to come out. So I did a little research online and found out that I can match the price of this phone (currently $199 after mail in rebate on Tmobile website or store) with Wirefly's price at $149 using a promotion code "courtesy" when calling them.
First, don't talk to a regular representative, they have no power to reduce the price, ask to talk to Customer Loyalty, and insist on it if they refuse to transfer u to them. Then just tell them that a friend or other people can match the price with Wirefly. In my case, they even lowered the price to $103 after taxes and shipping, no rebate watsoever. I have a 3 lines family plan with them, I don't know if it helps, but for the price, it's great compared to other people that have to buy them at $149+tax. I'm pretty sure some of u got the fone for free, I don't know how u guys did it, please tell us how.
I got it free Cuz they. Screwed me over on data for 3 months... and they sent me two broken vibrants as refurbished ones..... I was in the process of canceling when the manager came on and offered two new phones I got this one and saving my next free one for sgs2 if it comes to T-Mobile. I have two lines and only been a customer for 11 months. Just gotta know how to talk to them

Wow, that's a great deal u've got. But ur case is very special cuz they screw u up. At least u got a really good deal on the phones. I guess because I'm not born here in the USA or else I'd get a better deal than that, lol
sorry to bump this but it sort of goes along with my question
on october 27 i'll be eligible for my 22 month upgrade, but can i upgrade earlier and still get the phone for $149? when i'm logged into mytmobile account it shows that the g2x is $149 after rebates but since i'm not exactly eligible to upgrade, would i still get the rebate?
basically i can't stand my current phone anymore and i don't think i can wait a month and a half haha
Go through the checkout and see. You probably will only get a partial discount. I suggest waiting it out to see what the nexus prime is all about...

If you were looking online a couple weeks ago, you would've gotten them free with a 2-year contract or add-on line.

i'm going to try it, i'm just not sure if upgrading early will affect my contract price in any way. and i just looked up the nexus prime a little bit and found this "It’s said that the Nexus Prime’s screen could be as big as 4.65-inches." that is way too big for me

Ouch... Good point. I like 4" and would settle for 4.3" but no higher.
As far as upgrading early, it will just start your new 2-year contract from the date that you actually upgrade, not an extension onto the end. At least that's how my partial upgrade was a few years back. If you have 2 or more lines and can stick it out a while longer, T-Mobile's new $99/mo unlimited for 2 lines is awesome if they're still running the promotion. Unlimited calls, texts, and 2GB data for each line (throttled after 2GB). But it requires that you're not under a contract when you sign the new plan or there are some pretty hefty migration fees. Just food for thought.
Got mine at CostCo as a 2year contract upgrade for $149, then they sent me a $50 gift card, so $99 out of my pocket. Later they had it for $79 out of pocket.
i'm about to order it soon... it will be $149 with mail in rebate so i'm happy with that my g1 was more than that when i bought it haha

Get it at costco, they give free accessories and will price match their own prices within 30 days.
I want to get a G2x off contract because i work at a radioshack and can go on tmobile's dealer plan if i buy the phone outright. I've checked ebay and craigslist which had pretty good prices but i was wondering if you guys knew of any other places that people may not generally go or know about.
I scoured Craigslist for a couple weeks and negotiated price with a few people until I found a deal I was comfortable with. I would think eBay and CL are going to be your best bet for getting a good deal buying it outright.

I'm going to watch craigslist for a cheap Sensation when its released too.
Usually about a month after release new phones start showing up on there for cheap.

If you plan on getting a good deal on craigslist you have to almost live on there.
Most really good deals are gone within a half hour from when its posted.
Mine had been on there half hour when I texted him that I'd take it.
I plan on getting a Sensation on there like that too.
Just bored on a saturday sitting on the PC waiting for something good.

Costco actually sells the phone off contract for 399.99
I got mine from Radio Shack for $450. Signed up for their credit card that gave me 10% off. Not the cheapest but still a pretty good price for this phone IMO.
I bought mine outright from T-Mobile, paid $250 up front but they let me finance the rest through my monthly bill. It's pretty awesome cause even with financing the other 250 bucks my cell phone bill is still $20 less than what it was with AT&T.

Hi, I got my G2x recently and love it with all the customization I did on it. Now I want to buy one for my wife, but do not want go for another contract and monthly rate. My wife already has a prepaid account with t-mobile.
So if I buy the phone today (coming for free with 2yr contract) and cancel the account after 20 days and pay them around $270 ($200 ETF + $35 Activation + around $35 for 20 days of service), will there be anything wrong?
Hope T-mobile will not ask me to return the phone if I it is after 20 days and I pay the ETF.
Did anyone has done this in past?
thats how i got my g2x to start with..i paid the 199$ with 50$ rebate so 149$ paid etf after 15 days 200$ paid 349$ when phone was 500$ outright.
they said nothing.

Thanks for confirming that. At less than 300 its a nice phone to have..
If you can do that you are getting an excellent price for this device new. I paid $255 plus shipping for an excellent condition used device. New ones from reputable websites cost over $450.00. You are fulfilling your obligation under the contract you agreed to so I see nothing wrong in doing this. This type of practice is why Verizon raised their ETF fees. People were getting new phones, paying a $150 cancellation fee and then selling the devices on eBay for more than double what they paid.
Try going to Target. My local target just gave me an amazing deal. They have much more leniance when it comes to upgrades and new plans. Im on a family plan with 5 lines. Only 2 were eligable for upgrade. He gave us 4 phones at upgrade price while only upgrading 2 lines. Three G2X's @ $149.99 each.
I just ordered the G2x for my wife. Wish there was a way to tell t-mobile that I really do not need 20 days of service and want to cancel now
Go on ebay, you can find a bunch of these phones on their now.

Minimum I could find is $315. And ebay purchases always have issue with warranty. So getting form t-mobile for less than $300 is much better.
Wow. you guys are brilliant. lol. I think i'm gonna try that now that the g2x is free.
If it works out then great. I'd make sure to read through any fine print very carefully before making any commitment to sign or cancel the contract. Are there special conditions/fees when you're getting the handset for free?
Yea he has to carry the data plan on that line also for the.partial month so that's another small fee you have to figure in plus activation fee.

early termination fee = 200
activation = 35
Service = 35 for 21 days. ((50/30) * 21)
total = 270 + tax...
Everything should come for less than 300.

You are right about eBay. No warranty as they are resales and/or not authorized resellers. The warranty is for original purchaser from authorized sales channel only. eBay and Craigslist are not authorized sales channels. Go the T-Mobile route and have a warranty. Good catch. Enjoy your low cost phones.
This should be stickied, haha. Tmobile would be getting all kinds of people doing this.

That's one of the reasons I bought a G2X and imported it to Thailand. The 2X models sold here have the god awful LG UI, which appears to be a mimic of the Samsung CrapUI. I hate them all. I prefer plain Android UI thank you. Plus the demo unit I saw at the LG store at a local mall here had more craplications on it then I have ever seen before. Three or four screens of them. Way more than the few apps T-Mobile forces upon us.
Yea MIUI is running pretty nice on mine. Loaded up Go Launcher and I'm pretty happy.
Really happy with this phone. Lots of development for it. CM7, MIUI, custom stock, OC/UV kernels. Very nice.

They are having a sale for the Galaxy S4.
$99 for a 2-year plan of you can pay $5.99 a month.
http://www.squaretrade.com/samsung-galaxy-warranty
Read the fine print - $99 deductible makes your insurance policy worth a total of $200, or, exactly what you paid for the phone (unless you got it at Walmart or Best Buy with the Phone Freedom)
Yes, I know that you're locked in for another 2 years and all that good stuff, but if you don't have a way of getting another phone on contract at any time, you should start looking in to that instead.... My point is, if you break the phone tomorrow, it will cost you the same price as if you pulled it from an on contract plan, but if you break it two or three months from now, it will be cheaper to get another on contract phone because that price is variable and will certainly drop compared to the Square Trade price that is fixed....
I was a huge fan of ST back in the day, but their prices now are just outrageous! A good case costs a max of what, 60 bucks? Sounds smarter than $99 plus whatever you're planning on getting already to protect the outside of the phone!

If you shatter the screen it's $99 to get it fixed with the insurance. Without insurance it's another $639 plus tax..
Sure you can add another line and get a new phone for $200.. Plus the added line of $10 a month, plus the added line smart phone data fee of $20 a month.. Adding another line will cost you $200 plus tax, plus $30 a month for 24 months..
Do the math over 2-years..

Then maybe you should look into that instead of wasting money on an intangible, inflated insurance policy! I have a finite amount of upgrades to use too, but at least I can get another phone quickly without having spent $99 for potentially no reason ahead of time....

It's not a better suggestion.. It's a ridiculous suggestion IMHO..
Your idea:
$199 for a new line to replace broken phone.. $30 a month ($10 for added line and $20 for cheapest data plan) x 24 month contract = $720 plus the $199 for phone = $920 total cost..
-vs-
Full price phone $640
-vs-
Square trade plan $99 plus $99 deductible = $200
Ya your way is better!

Also. I have a friend who went through 2 iPhones in a year because of shattered screens..
Doing it your way she would have spent $400 just for upgrades never mind the monthly cost associated with having 2 extra lines. Now we are talking $400 just for contract price phones. Add in the monthly add a line and data fees for 2 phones and for 2-years and your idea / plan is even more asinine..
With Square Trade she spent a total of $300..
Oh well... To each their own..

gotta admit, I do not understand your method either. Can oyu explain it better? thanks
Re-purchasing the phone using an upgrade on your current plan will cost you no less than the ~$199 (cost of the phone) + $240 ($10 a month for add'l line w/ blocked data * 24 month contract) and you switching phones from that line to your original number. This is well above the cost to get a replacement through SquareTrade.
OR, are you referring to taking another family members' upgrade and therefore simply subsidizing your cost by pushing it into the future?

Well one thing that the att covers is theft.
Honestly, you get a extended warranty if you purchase your phone with a premium credit card. They will also pay for anything the manufacturer doesn't want to cover. That's 2 years.

You are right, ST doesn't cover theft. I didn't consider that.
I've never had a phone stolen (famous last words?) and that's because it is either in my hands or in my front pocket. I do this not only for theft reasons, but also for dropping reasons. Of the 27 smartphones I've owned in the last 3 years, I've only ever dropped one once.
The cost of the phone would be the least of my worries to a phone being stolen, honestly, I don't want some rando having copies of my music, pictures, and notes. Regardless of my having backups.
I will check out credit card coverage options, gotta put my 12 CC's to use somehow.

Here's a story. Just make sure you have a premium credit card. For Visa, they call it a signature visa card, it should say signature above the visa logo.
