i mean, sounds like a good plan to me. i'd like to try the jailbreak but i'm absolutely not downgrading my phone, even if i could find an old rom
i'd try to do it myself, but i'd need pretty straight forward direction
hmm, maybe i'm out of my league xD
i'm using liberated froyo fr008 and the default kernel. can i flash an old kernel?
i mean, without effecting the current rom/system?
anyway, i like liberated but i'ma check out cyanogen now and see what its like =)
I believe the default kernel for liberated let's you overclock and keep your trackball wake and WiFi hotspot also. Previous kernels you would lose all that. Maybe I'm wrong?

Very interesting... so if we get stuck in a bootloop we could just recover from a Nandroid backup without having to revert to stock, etc.
Sent from my MB865 with Tapatalk... pardon my swype!
Too bad that wont work for us... it is in the boot.img, and we can't touch that until we get the bootloader unlocked.
Good find though.

I am pretty sure my phone was bootloop and how would you get it into recovery right now? i had to use the fastboot files to do it. it is a good idea though

Ah, nevermind
But just wondering... if it's based off of CWM, and we can reboot into CWM, and we can get CWM to appear on every boot... then shouldn't we be able to get something like this to work without modifying the boot.img?

Nope, if you use the razr boot hijack, it is exactly that, a hijack. It uses several "android/Linux" binaries that it "hijacks", to allow you get into CWM, just before the android UI comes up, but after the kernel is started. To get the particular hack you mentioned, working, you will have to modify the boot image, to include the recovery on boot, that will start just before the kernel is actually started/starting.
Like others have said, that since we have the fxz it does not really matter. Since I have really been doing some serious hacking and development on this phone, I have soft bricked or boot-looped my phone I can't count how many times, and even the razr CWM on boot does not always help. A good backup from CWM, and the fxz is where it is at, and really the best solution for things like this.
Most people on this site who have this phone really should not worry too much about these things, because the likelihood of doing this is very small unless you really are doing some serious hacking or development work like lfaber06 and I are. We will usually not release something to the rest of the world without testing it first, and giving explicit directions on how to do the job without bricking the phone. For those brave souls that are trying to do some dev work, and are new to it, until we get the bootloader unlocked, again the best bet is the fxz and a good backup from CWM.
Hi All,
OK, bootloader is unlocked, I am working on recovery, so the next challenge is....................S-OFF!!! Aw, f%@ck, I thought i had my life back...
I invite all users with ideas and/or knowledge to jump in and tell me what they think I am doing right and what makes me a moron. I have no pride, so lay it on me.
I will post progress reports in Post #2.
Anyway, here's to getting this done quickly.

Sorry if I'm totally off base here but I do believe reading on XDA somewhere that with the HTC One series phones when you unlock the bootloader it locks the phone from being able to flash recoverys.
This is the reason why I have waited to do the bootloader unlock I didnt want to screw myself from ever being able to flash custom roms.
you have to use this unlock method for the bootloader so why would it screw anything else up? It opens up all possibilities, not close them.

Nope. I have flashed CWM recovery at least 4 times on an international One X AFTER unlocking the bootloader. I wish that were it....
I think you may be thinking of firmware, which is a real mess, because unlocking your bootloader can set your CID to "none", and thus, you can't flash different firmware (i.e., an EU firmware on an Asian phone)...not that that would matter for these carrier-branded phones...
Good job and great progress. Unfortunately, none of us AT&T users can join in on the fun.

If that was completely true, then the Tegra 3 model's would not have cwm recovery... yet they do.

i think what Killathehnoob is trying to say is that its only the ROGERS version of the ONE X that when unlocking the BLer HTC has somehow lock the other partitions so that custom recoveries and kernels are not able to be flashed to the phone...which essentially could be the case because all they said they will "unlock" the BLer...BUT they never said they would NOT do anything else in the process. maybe its a possibillity that has been over looked...just THINK TANKING is all

I understand what you mean
I wonder if the fact that its new proprietary qualcomm chip is the reason why its being 'limited'... so we may have to rethink the whole initialization process.
we cant even get to the point that the logcat is able to start logging. So we're flying blind.
We've extended the time between loading to the soft reboot after the flash... but that doesnt tell us much.

Interesting. I think the lack is fastboot boot is what they are referring to. This would prevent custom kernel development on an s-off device, but should still allow flashing of insecure stock boot images, as with the int. HOX, althoug i read it again, anf maybe they are talking about more than that. I am not sure that the article is saying that there is something different with the Rogers version vs other versions, but it seems like there may be, and obviously with the Att version. I think I will spend a day just reading, trying to pick other devs' brains, and start fresh...thanks for the input.

Again thanks for this. Back to the drawing board!!!!
I can get it to get into recovery mode, but it wont go any further than the red lettered warning banner. I tried to flash the ROM from the clockwork mod app from the market. No luck. My phone is not in the list of phones in the "Flash clockwork mod recovery". I tried to flash the 5.8.4.0 endeavoru.img file to my phone, but in my command prompt on my computer, it doesn't recognize my command as a batch command or anything. Any help folks? I was trying to find a stick on rooting, unlocking bootloader, and then flasing roms, but to my surprise I didn't find them all in one. I don't know what I'm doing wrong at this point. Spent a few hours last night, and now it all seems like a blur. Help please!

Do some research first because seems like u don't have even a custom recovery or even roooted... Now also never install anything that says endeavour or you will **** up your phone enough said...now do u have att one x or rogers telstra
WOAH, STOP RIGHT THERE.
endeavoru.img IS THE WRONG IMAGE!!!! I can smell a brick!!! the endeavoru image is for the quad core tegra one x. I am assuming you have a OneXL or one of the other Qualcomm DUAL CORE One X's
Our phone is called EVITA.
If you have a non ATT one x like a Telstra One XL or rodgers go to htcdev website.
If you have a ATT version I have recently found out that some versions cannot be rooted, and root is needed to unlock the bootloader. If it has ATT logo on the top where HTC should be, then you need to know the version number of your current rom before putting in any more effort to unlock. Check settings>about phone>
Check the forum in the One X Android Development/[INDEX] AT&T/ROGERS One X Resources Compilation Roll-Up (Updated 10/2/12) for the versions that can be rooted/unlocked.
Hope this helps
-Liam
mine is the ATT version......
My phone isn't bricked yet...phew. SO....going to get the EVITA then. right? for ATT version?
First thing is first you need to know the version of the stock rom you have, go to settings/about phone, I believe that if your version is greater than 1.85 then you are pretty screwed. You can only wait until A) ATT allow unlocking B) someone finds an exploit. If your One X is brand new, I doubt it is 1.85 as this is an old version.

If you can't get into bootloader, try enabling usb debugging ( Settings > Development), then connect your phone to your computer and download the Android Debug Bridge (ADB) from HERE
Open a command window in the place where you extracted the adb files and type "adb devices"
If your device is not recognized, download and install the drivers from HERE
After that, try "adb devices" again, if something like "HT8472JW76 device" shows up, then that's good
Now type "adb reboot-bootloader" and see if that gets you into bootloader
This is kind of a lot of work, but it definitely helps in the long run. Also, I would not run my utility until you have downgraded to 2.2 by running an RUU (all of them can be found HERE, 2.2 is the one that has the number "1.17.651") or by flashing a PG06IMG.zip through bootloader. The utility checks what version you are using, and if its anything other than 2.2 or 2.3.4 it throws an error, so just downgrade to 2.2 directly and then use the utility.
If you have any questions or if anything does not make sense, don't be afraid to ask

Do you have superuser installed? Or ROM Manager? You're problem is strange. Check out ROM Manager after you install superuser and see if it will let you install a recovery... I have never had S-On root I just know it's out there and you have to have some kind of root because you are not on stock. I am S-Off and most of the people on here are, so root that baby and get to flashing.

well, I know these things from my wildfire. I have installed superuser and also ROM manager but can'tget superuser permissions or install a recovery. But when I start the phone, there is not the original HTC-screen, but a custom-screen. So I agree with you, that I am not on stock - some kind of very strange. It seems to me, that all the root-tools only work with 2.3.x, so if i could downgrade, that might help as well.

The shift was shipped with 2.2 and 2.3.x so if you have anything other then that it was rooted to get to where you are. How you lost root is beyond any of us. And maybe beyond the guy that sold it to you. Pull the battery and place it back in hold volume down and power, that should be a sure shot at getting to bootloader, then take a picture and post that

Like strapped365 said, this is definitely a weird situation and I've never come across it myself. The best option would probably be to just run a 2.2 RUU and root from there. You can also check for root by downloading "root checker" from the play store, its by joeykrim (the free version will work fine)

Now if you delete your bootloader that's on you, and if you did it and didn't tell anyone then sold said phone, you would be the only one who could help someone in that situation. After you hangout here more you will notice a redundancy of posts because 90% of rooted users don't even deserve to have a smartphone let alone a rooted one, so they never know what their talking about so we try to push the core troubleshooting methods to get them to where they need to go. It's like calling sprint what's their first step? Factory data reset to give you a level playing field, here I just told the guy how to get into bootloader if there was a fastboot checked. Also I've seen so many users get the version of Sense mixed up with the version of Android so again we fall back to the core known methods of solving a problem. I've been with the shift since release so I've seen every failed ota by HTC and every moronic thing that can be done with this phone. But no matter how I told him to get somewhere all you new guys just take over like no oldies but goodies know......btw if bootloader is missing adb reboot bootloader wouldn't work either right? So again with the redundant instructions to get the the same place
