[Q] Broken Volume Rocker. - HTC Inspire 4G

Since HTC made the battery door awesome on the Inspire (Sarcasm) I guess I manhandled it a bit too much and it broke off. I actually didn't use that much force... but anyways. I have the warranty etc.. What do I need to do before taking it in to get it replaced? Its rooted and I cant navagate CWM without the rocker. I saw this "I had the same problem. My volume rocker broke when taking out the battery. Went to at& the store and told them that it wasn't my mistake. They asked me to go to at&t warranty center and the rep changed the phone for me." Posted in another but don't they look at the phones when you try to get them replaced? Any information would be helpful, thanks.

Ruu back to stock from computer. Also if u flash ext4 recovery someone posted that you can navigate in that recovery with the soft buttons on the phone
Edit: just tried and I can confirm in ext4 recovery home and menu move up and down back goes back a menu search makes a selection. Check out the ext4 recovery thread in desire hd development for install procedure
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA Premium App

You can do that in the latest cwm also. No need to flash ext4 recovery

so ironic that today i traded a smartphone with a dude named andrew for his htc inspire 4g. and i get the phone home, and lo and behold the volume buttons don't work.

[Q] Rooted Inspire powering off issue

Ok I just flashed the Revolution HD rom and also the radio. I performed the checksum on both and they both matched. first time around I didnt check so I went through everything as I was having some weird issues that have since been resolved. However from the beginning of being rooted I noticed something strange. When I power off the phone its like it goes into a sleep mode rather than full power off. Reason I think this is after selecting power power off and it cycles I press the power button to power on and it vibrates once then it goes straight to the unlock screen. No HTC screens at all. It does show no service at first like it was off. So is this a malfunction or something I never noticed prior to the root because I honestly dont remember how it was stock. Thanks and hopefully if it is an issue its simple...
Go to menu/settings/power and unchecked fastboot. Its just the fastboot feature

Inspire only boots into bootloader

My friends inspire will only boot into the bootloader. When I turn the phone it goes straight to the bootloader. The phone does recognize when you plug in a usb cable, but it won't let me scroll through the options. The phone is not rooted nor did he try to root it. It boots into that screen and won't allow you to do anything. Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like the volume button is stuck.

Did you say it is not rooted and it's booting into bootloader? How long have they had it? You sure it's not rooted? If it's not rooted call for a Warrenty exchange.

This is definitely the answer, something might possibly be in between the rocker also, like a small rock that would cause the constant connection for the "down" action that wont allow you do do anything.
It's definitely not rooted. Security is still on and he had no idea what I meant when I asked if he rooted it. The volume rocker being stuck makes sense somewhat. We got the volume rocker to work one time and did a factory reset. After that the volume rocker quit working again. Att said they wouldn't exchange it because their first thoughts were it was tampered with and that he tried to root it. I'm a cell phone repairman. Maybe il just open it up and see if there's something blocking the volume rocker.

Replace the battery cover, which is the entire back. It might be that the "button" isn't making contact properly.
Remove the entire back cover, and where the "button" should be, press down on it with your finger.
Do a battery pull and then try it.
I don't think it's anything to do with the phone, it was doing the same thing on mine. I had to pull the battery numerous times a day.
Until I flashed a rom with a stock kernel, and now it's fine again!

First off, what chris is trying to say is, that when in Recovery menu, you can use the capacitive buttons infront of the phone to move down and up and also select items in recovery menu. The search button can be used to select items that you would select with the power button.
Ugh..nightmares of the problems I had with my n1's
the phone is gone... thank youu everyone for your advice. when the power button stopped working first thing i did was take the case off and try with my hand still to no avail. so back to tmo it went

Reset my phone and now its messed up

ok so umm I have this problem on my phone. My volume was messed up, it would automatically start decreasing at random, So I thought maybe resetting it would fix it.
So when I reset it, I get this messed up screen that Ive never seen in my life before, it was like

also none of the lights are on
I dont see what I did wrong, I didnt download anything stupid... whats going on? ;__; PLEASEPLEASEPLEASEEEE help me, im so confused right now! The only thing I do wrong is over charge it alot, is that why? WAIT, DID I GET HACKED OR SOMTHING?? (Why didnt I buy that iPhone...)

Your volume down button is pressed. When you reboot the phone while holding volume down it takes you to the bootloader. See if the button is jammed in. If so, try tapping the phone against your palm to unstick it.

Ohhhhh, I see. (your saving my life right now btw)
How do I un-jam it? Ive tried that and out of the 142903480 times, twice I got some bit of green text under the 5 selections, I wasnt able to catch what it said cause it dissapeared 2 seconds after.
Oh and the power button isnt working because when I click power to select the first option (the fastboot thing, whatever that does...) It only worked right when this problem happend, and after that It wont do anything D:

I think so. ... So the only thing wrong with it was the buttons or somthing?
You're just stuck in bootloader. You should still have a ROM installed to boot to (if you didn't wipe that when you reset). Should be able to battery pull and boot normally.
Oh wait, it thinks you're holding volume when powering on cuz your button is stuck. That is hardware failure. You may, actually, have to use insurance, or your provider may even swap it out for fairly cheap if it was purchased fairly recently.

Yeah, OP you're suffering from hardware failure unless you can unstick that volume down button. Try using your warranty, and be gentle on your volume rocker next time

Can't get into hboot / recovery / fastboot

So, I thought I knew what I was doing, but apparently not.
I tried flashing XYLON.
Now, the phone gets stuck on the boot animation. I've been trying to get it to work for the last 12 hours. It either gets stuck on the boot animation, or on the "Android is updating" screen. I can't even get into the hboot to boot into recovery.
Can anyone recommend a course of action to bring my phone back to life?

I'm still on 1.09
Its s-off.
I haven't touched my hboot since i rooted my phone.
Hold down power until lights flash 7-10 times. Simulates a battery pull. Then push volume down and press and hold power button for 4-5 seconds, then release power while still holding volume down.. should go to bootloader. Sounds like your not timing it correctly

Well, I'm still trying that. I've done it the way you''ve mentioned it here as well. Trying it again now. I've never had problems getting into my hboot before. :S
Something just seems wrong.
Once I get back home, I'm gonna pull the phone apart and check if something's wrong with my volume button. The Vol. up stopped working, but vol down was working just fine....
Let it boot as far as it will go and see if adb will recognize it. If it does adb reboot bootloader

I've tried that.I kept it for an hour, let it go as far ahead as it would. ADB does not see it.
I agree, if you cant get Into bootloader its a timing issue. Try holding the power buttons until the capacitive buttons blink 7 times or so, when the screen goes black let go of power and press and hold only volume until the bootloader comes up. This way is almost impossible to miss.

Seem like I've been missing the timing all day. :/ I'm gonna check my hardware this evening... lets see what happens after that.
I have heard of a case where someone had to physically disconnect the battery before they could get into bootloader but that's a *****. Since you're s-off you could try RUUing.

RUU doesn't work. I can't get RUU to detect my phone. It doesn't boot up. It's stuck at the boot logo. And even if I leave it connected to ruu while i'm trying to reboot, or trying to get into hboot, it still doesn't detect my phone.
Well... You could let the battery drain and then charge it for about 10 mins then unplug from power and press and hold power and volume.

I encourage you to keep trying the traditional way before taking the phone apart.

Well, I've already pulled my phone apart once to replace my broken screen. Which is why I'm suspecting it could be a hardware problem. Somehow. *sigh*
And I'm in. Finally.
I let the phone's battery drain completely. I pulled apart the phone, and pressed down on the volume + power pins/buttons directly. And I got into the boot loader.
I'm currently restoring the backup of the rooted stock rom I always keep on my phone storage.
Thank you everyone for your suggestions and support.
I just saved myself a whole lot of money. ^_^
I think you can help me maybe but I'm not so experienced

So my situation is similar but my htc inc s is brand new from ebay china seller ( I live in Greece), is s-on, never messed up with, never rooted all factory. It worked great for few days and after the first OTA update I cant get into hboot, adb doesn't see the phone, always the updating symbol on screen.Tried battery pull, volume down + power in all the possible timing and combinations but yet nothing! Also I tried battery pull, volume up + power it vibrates 3 times orange lid is on and black screen (on the forums is said that this is diagnostic menu). So I think maybe this phone is a refurb and not new since the answer from HTC global support (after sending my IMEI and S/N) is that this phone is for Indonesian market and that its warranty expired year ago! Can you help me in some way guys...

Sorry, I am not familiar with your phone. If it is completely stock, you may be able to RUU while int he diagnostic menu or during updating screen. Best to post in the Htc inc s forums.
