Android cell phone providers - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Have a quick question about phone providers. I have an LG optimistic v with virgin mobile. My brother is giving me a Motorola Droid x that's with a different company. I know of a method to unlock a phone but can an unlocked phone be used With any provider?
Is there a way to flash a phone to a differnt provider?

wow, meant to press quote but hit thanks. oh well
now back on topic:
yes an unlocked phone can be used on any provider
afaik you need a code to unlock your phone. ive never heard of anyone flashing to a different provider. you can google "android sim unlock phone" or something like that and i bet most of the results will have to do something with buying a code off ebay or something

It can be used with any provider on the same network, unless its a world phone which has both networks. The dx is cdma, so it will work on Verizon,metropcs,cricket,sprint... But not att,tmobile... which is gsm

Questions about this phone unlocked.

Is it true I can simply put an at&t sim card in the phone and use a dumb phone plan if I buy an unlocked ones? Also does it get at&t 3g?

Besides SIM unlocking you need to perform the US band unlock as described both here, on Rootzwiki, and who knows where else, to use the DROID2 GLOBAL on AT&T or T-Mobile.
As AT&T uses standard WCDMA bands, yes, it will work with their 3G voice/data network as long as the band unlock hack is in place.

Thanks I couldn't find any posts that were newer than a year ago. Now to find someone selling one here with everything done.

I doubt there are a lot of band unlocked D2Gs on sale as reflashing the SBF image breaks the hack.
You can perform the hack yourself provided you buy a SIM unlocked device.
Refer to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=22769743 for instructions. Do note that whenever you soft-brick your device you will need to SBF back to 2.4.x and apply this hack.
Remember to never ever update the device to 4.5.629.
Thanks. Hopefully I get lucky but its Greta to have that link

Dumb phone plan from who? If you get everything done (band unlock as described in the other posts) you can use your phone with an AT&T SIM and don't need any plan at all from Verizon. Is the theory that AT&T won't recognize it as a smart phone because it is not one that they ever sold?

I guess so. I found a list of every phone that works for att dumb plans and it was on it.

Any non-carrier-locked GSM phone that has compatible bands can work on AT&T's network. You don't even need a list, just check which bands AT&T uses and check the phone's tech specs.

I think the problem is that people don't want AT&T to recognize the phone as a smartphone and helpfully add on a data package on postpaid plans, (presumably these people are intending to use Wifi for data). The claim was made that some people had moved a SIM from dumb phone to a smartphone purchased elsewhere, and suddenly they got billed for a data package. See, for example, http://www.zdnet.com/blog/bott/can-at-t-really-add-a-pricey-data-plan-onto-your-wireless-bill/2667
In the past, there were posts saying that you were "safe" if you used a model that AT&T had never sold, as their system would not be able to recognize it as a smartphone. Not sure how true this really is!
They probably detect it based on IMEIs. But yeah, it's just a speculation without clear facts.

I'll say it before you get flamed. This is the wrong section for this question. This is for the EVO Shift. But that being said, in order to Unlock the EVO4G to work on AT&T is quite a job. If it's even posiible. I do know you can use the EVO4G on Metro PCS , Boost Mobile, and several other Prepaid Carriers.
It wouldn't work on AT&T anyways. The Evo is CDMA and ATT is GSM. Two different technologies, ie you don't have a Sim Card slot so you can't get ATT. Not would it read ATT's frequencies. So you won't find anybody that can.

Ah, sorry about posting in the wrong section. There were like 4 EVO sections to choose from. Thanks for the info, I assumed it was impossible but the amount of pay-for sites which advertise unlocking to use on other carriers did not mention it not working on AT&T. I suspected CDMA vs GSM would be an issue, but am not familiar enough with those technologies to say for sure.
Is there a free method to unlock CDMA for use on other CDMA carriers then? I assume the method would be the same between all CDMA devices.
Sprint has been unhelpful thus far.

Sprint is not going to be of any help . They do not want you taking the device to another carrier. Also I'm not so sure other carriers want you bringing your own device from a different carrier onto their network. Like I stated above, the only way I'm aware of to do this is by going Prepaid. Which IMO is a PIA. As for letting someone else do the process for you. Be very weary of those offering to do it for you for money. Make sure there is some kind of guarantee. One that the device will not be damaged. Two that after the flash you will actually be able to activate the device on the Network you are supposed to be able to.
The only way possible is to flash a new esn on the device which has legal issues. The esn is tied to the carrier on all cdma networks. This prevents you from using a vzw phone on sprint and vice versa. Sprint nor vzw will let you activate an esn not in their system.

Inspire on Simple Mobile

Hey guys wondering if someone else is in the Pacific Northwest area that is on Simple Mobile with the Inspire. What I would like to know is there any better radios for the inspire that youve noticed any change in signal reception or anything than the stock radio.

search around a bit. radio is subjective, two people with the same phone and same service in the same room will get different results with radios. best thing is try a few out and see if any are better for you.
Simple mobile uses tmobile bands therefore you only will get edge speeds, try the Att go phone sim from Walmart you'll get great speeds and maybe straight talk

The one issue with GoPhone is that if the SIM has been activated in a different phone, and less than 6 months have passed since it was activated, you will likely get an IMEI locked message. This doesn't mean there is any issue with the Inspire, simply that the GoPhone SIM is locked to the IMEI of the phone it was activated in.
I use red pocket mobile. In northern cali. Runs on ATT hspa plus. Not bad no issues. T mobile doesn't offer a 3g plan. Red pocket is 50-60. Might want to look into it.

The six month policy is for unlocking the phone to other carriers. you have it backwards, my friend. If you call them and tell them that you are changing phones because the one it was activated on was damaged or non functional anymore, they will send a code to the phone to unlock the SIM. I think they can only do that for a SIM that is locked to an Android. If it was activated on a non-smart phone, you can go to any AT&T store and tell them you want to change phones and they will do it.

Not sure what you found to be incorrect in my statement. I never claimed the gophone sim couldn't be unlocked to be used in the inspire, just that it is locked by default to the phone that it is activated in. Also, though what you say is true about being able to get it changed, by default AT&T personnel don't seem to be able to diagnose the problem, when you give them the error message. A friend of mine had this issue when he tried to use a gophone sim in a nokia smartphone, and after going to the AT&T store, calling them up, etc, he asked me and I told him his SIM was probably locked to the phone it was activated in. Once he knew this, he called, and they unlocked it. However, neither the store nor customer service was able to help him, until he told them what the problem was. I also picked up the inspire I am using now for cheap, because the seller tried putting a gophone sim in it, and it came up with an "IMEI Locked" message. He assumed there was a problem with the phone, and AT&T customer service was unable to help him. Knowing the issue with GoPhone sims, I bought the phone, and have had no issues with it. So, though what you say is true, you have to know about the gophone simlock issue, in order to get it resolved.
Please post all questions in the Q & A section. Thanks! Thread moved.

Phone not allowed MM#6 [Mystery Message]

I am getting a "Phone not allowed MM#6" on Verizon RAZR HD MAXX phone bought over ebay . The seller has assured its not a stolen phone .
I am getting this error when i insert a foreign sim in RAZR HD MAXX , the signals comes for a while and immediately gets blocked . I never had a problem of this type before on any Verizon RAZR phones(RAZR,RAZR MAXX,RAZR HD)

Hi ,
I bought a Verizon Droid RAZR HD MAXX from US. Its a Global phone and does not require an unlock code for use on GSM networks outside US.
I am getting an error message "Phone not allowed MM#6" when i am inserting a GSM SIM in India . I have tried five different cellular networks.
I have used 7 different Verizon RAZR phones (RAZR,RAZR MAXX,HD ) in India but never had a problem with any of them since they are all GLOBAL phones.
Google has no info regarding the message . Please escalate this to tier-2 tech support.
Google results suggest that this happens for a stolen phone but I called Verizon and they confirmed i have a clean ESN phone
IMEI/ESN : 9900020358661XX
More than likely it would be ok on Verizon but is carrier locked preventing it from accepting a foreign SIM
Check the ESN

Try a SIM card from a different provider (if you have one available for testing). Which provider are you trying to use it with? I've seen similar problems in the Droid 4, although nobody mentioned specifically the error that you're getting.
I have tried a different operator but still getting the same message . I have tried Aircel,Reliance GSM . I have also tried BSNL ,the worst operator (government owned) . It seem either there is a central database for stolen phones(unlikely) or something is wrong with the phone. I am amazed that that all threads are unsolved for Phone not allowed MM#6 message.
Hmm, that's strange. What country are you in?

India has many CDMA networks that matches Verizon's band as well, so if your phone is still at its factory settings, it is possible that it is trying to tie itself to one of those carriers first. Verizon is still predominantly a CDMA carrier, so all of their phones by design will attempt to hunt for CDMA bands first before reverting to a GSM protocol.
You can disable CDMA band hunt by going to the Android's Test menu. I know this guide is for HTC devices, but your phone has the same menu as well:
http://www.bestsupertech.com/2012/04/change-network-mode-access-test-mode-in.html
Under 'Select Preferred Network Type', select GSM Only. Let it sit for a few minutes and see what it does.
I have already done that . The cellular network name is displayed in the INFO and settings>Status menu but the signals are blocked .
Have you flashed the phone with an original Verizon firmware? Being a used phone, I would at least do that to wipe out any tampering the previous owner has done with it.
I havent flashed with an original verizon firmware but i have reset the phone several times . Its not a used phone , the original screen guard is still there
Where did you grab the IMEI number? As in did you get it from the phone settings or from a sticker on the phone or box? This could also happen if the IMEI is not correct within the phone.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
The phones IMEI is correct
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Verizon Razr HD is not a GSM device. That may be the problem.
BTW, MM6 means the phone has been reported lost/stolen and the IMEI has been network blocked.

Hi. I am also in India on vodafone network. I already bought the Razr Maxx HD from Ebay US and will be receiving it sometime next month. After checking your thread I am wondering if I made a mistake. I had done my own research and as per the phone SPECS, it is compatible with India GSM band. Have you talked to verizon US. May be you can enquire with them. Tell them you are roaming in India and unable to connect to Vodafone. May be there tech support can help out. And have you tried talking to vodafone tech support (198) in India? I called them up and they have asked me to write an email. I will PM u the email ID. Let's work together to get this awesome phone working in India.
PS: Have you tried flashing any ROM CM 10 etc and see if it works?

The Droid RAZR HD from Verizon should be Global gsm sim unlocked, meaning you can buy it from Verizon go to Brazil and put a gsm sim card in it and it should work without any problems. No need to unlock it or anything.

Hello,
I'm planning to buy a Razr HD too, i'm from India. I once bought the Motorola Photon 4G from eBay India and the network was working fine. I used an Aritel sim card, it was a Sprint device, but since Photon is a world phone it read the SIM. The major problem it had was that the internet wasn't working on it, and the phone had MANY bugs, I couldn't even connect it to WiFi. So, without internet connectivity I just used it as a MP3 Player.
I want to buy Razr HD, and Motorola is not launching it in India so the ebay one is a Verizon Unlocked. I'm pretty sure that the phone will read the sim, but i have my doubts wether it'll connect to the internet or not. Even in your case, I think you will be able to make calls etc. but i have my doubts on data services.
Should I go for it? Or just pick the LG Nexus 4?

Why do these threads continually appear? They have been answered at least a dozen times.
The Verizon model of the RAZR HD is UNLOCKED FOR INTERNATIONAL CARRIERS. No codes are required. If you want to use the Verizon model on a US GSM carrier (ATT/TMobile), you have to do a little hackery.
Yes, you will see an annoying "This SIM is from an unknown source" warning when you start the phone. Press OK to bypass it (or root the phone and freeze the APK that displays that warning.)
I have been to Australia numerous times with this phone -- there is no CDMA anything in Australia -- and the phone works just fine on AU carriers at HSPA+ speeds.
What about the internet connectivity? Data Connection? GPRS settings don't come automatically and dont work manually.

Did you not read what I said? The RAZR HD, is UNLOCKED OUT OF THE BOX. Do NOT pay a service to unlock the phone. IT IS ALREADY UNLOCKED. No code is required.
Everything works fine internationally (this includes data). You can manually enter APNs if you have to right from the settings page. Just pull out the Verizon SIM, and put in whatever international SIM you want. That's all you have to do. Note the phone uses Micro-SIMs, so you will need to cut a regular SIM down to size or buy a micro one.
The only time you will run into a problem is if you bring it to the US. The radio won't accept an ATT or TMobile SIM. If you fall into this small subset of people, then you will need to change some values in the radio. There's a thread on here somewhere about it.
As I said before, I have been to Australia many times with this thing. During these trips I removed the VZW SIM and used an Australian SIM to avoid Verizon's insane Australian Charges ($5/min voice, $25/MB data.)
