How do I tell what ROM I have? - HTC Inspire 4G

I just bought a craigslist Inspire 4G. I was told by the seller it was not modded/rooted but after buying I found it had been at least rooted.
How do I tell what ROM has been installed. If I got to Settings>About Phone>Software information all of the versions are the same at a buddy of mine at work who has a stock Inspire 4G.
Android Version: 2.2.1
Baseband Version: 12.39.60.19H_26.04.06_M
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.21-g3c08447

Build Number: 1.80.502.3 CL318736 release-keys
Software Number: 1.80.502.3
Browser Version: WebKit3.1
Could it have been rooted and then returned to stock rom while rooted?
Chris

Software number is your ROM version. Looks like the stock 1.80 build.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA Premium App

How do you know it has been rooted? Looks pretty stock.

Can you hold the volume button and power button and boot into recovery? Another way to check is go into the Market and download Rom Manager for free and see if can be granted root. If it can't then she is stock for the most part.

It also had (in addition to SuperUser) ROM Manager. I just rebooted in to recovery Mode Clockwork 3.0.2.5.
Wierd, why would someone go through the trouble to root, and then go back to stock?
If I were batshiz crazy enough to want to install the GB update comming soon...would it fubar my phone??

Very likely it won't let you accept that update if the device still S-off. Boot into bootloader and check the upper left corner and see if it says [ACE PVT SHIP]"S-ON" or "S-OFF". If S-OFF, you are rooted.

If it were me, (because I don't trust handywork that isn't my own ), I would download a ROM that looked appealing to me (depending on how close to stock you want to be) and then get a good, clean, thorough wipe and install the new ROM, then setup/configure the phone to my liking. If you so choose, you can always unroot the device and S-ON, but with the amount of great ROMs on XDA, I don't know why you'd do that unless the phone was being returned under warranty, and since it was bought of Craig's, that wouldn't apply anyway. The upcoming GB release will definitely get rooted and busyboxed by the great Devs here and would be a much better release than anything AT&T would shoot your way
EDIT: Just make sure that the phone is properly rooted. If you download "Root Checker" from the Market, it will verify that you have full Root access and that Busybox has been properly installed.

Sounds like this guy was lazy and didn't return it to stock with s on before he sold it to you. Its not rocket science to return it to stock. With a little bit of reading, i was sucessful on mu first attempt. As long as the phone is fully functional, then no harm no foul because u can unroot it and return it to true stock or u can take advantage of it already being rooted and flash a rom of your choosing and configure it to your liking as stated above.

I did and the busybox and root checks passed. One question though, on the root check it said:
Alternate su binary location:
/bin/su: Permission denied
What does that mean?

I haven't purchased the Charge yet, but I'm planning on pulling the trigger soon. Been reading the forums for a while now. I currently have a rooted OG Droid. Now after using this method, will it keep the root after doing the ED2 update?

No... ED2 will kill root. Do not update to ED2 until root is available.
There is an ODIN'd rom available that has root for ED2 but that is it.
Right on. Thanks for the speedy reply.

When you say your ROM is rooted, I'm assuming by installing your ROM (following the directions in your thread) it will root the phone and install your ROM all in one shot? Sorry for the noob question.

This method is to root ED1 only. This is not a ROM. If you want a rooted rom see the first 2 or 3 posts in developement.

All charges are shipping with ED1 and verizon has pushed an update which is ED2 so your phone will ask you to update every 5 minutes whether you root it or not. If you update to ED2 then this root method will not work. If you root your phone and then update to ED2 it will break your root.
To stop the update pop up from occuring go into your build.prop file and change all references of ED1 to ED2 and it will stop asking you to update

Right, I understand that. My question was actually in reference to DroidXcon's ROM. He stated that his ROM is rooted. I guess what I'm asking is, by using ODIN to install his (DroidXcon's) file, it will root the phone and install his ROM as well? I'm coming from a rooted D1.

It will install his ROM, which is rooted. It will not "root" the phone as such, but you will have a rooted phone with ability to run Titanium Backup, etc., when done.
Samsung Androids (at least the Fascinate and Charge) are different from most others in that you can flash almost anything with ODIN, regardless of the condition of the phone (rooted or not, currently running or not).

Thanks to DroidXcon and others for creating this one click method. This is by far the easiest method to root your charge on ED1. See attachment
Don't forget to thank me for making rooting easy for you to find and don't forget to thank and donate to DroidXcon for creating it.
The Root method is called GingerSnap and its a One click.
1. Make sure your phone is in debugging mode
2. Make sure you have the charge drivers installed on your PC
3. Download the gingersnap .zip file to your desktop
4. Double click on the gingersnap.exe file and press GO
That's it!!!! Your phone will reboot and you will be fully rooted. (permanent root)

ROOT] HTC EVO 4G 2.3 Gingerbread root tutorial

Alright guys, this post is just for reference and ease. I've been using xda ever since I got my old HTC Hero a year and a half ago. Now I have the EVO and xda has been nothing but helpful to me. I've decided to make this post to try to help anyone that might not know much about android so I will make this a simple, easy to understand post tutorial.
HTC EVO 4G 2.3 Gingerbread root tutorial:
(Step 1) Power down your phone and take the battery out. Printed on the phone under the battery is a serial number. It is on the bottom line and usually starts with the letters: HT then a series of numbers and letters. Write this code down for you will need it later.
(Step 2) Download superuser from this link: http://www.mediafire.com/?q3ujsx1m4uq1662.
(Step 3) Download the HTC drivers from this link: http://api.viglink.com/api/click?for...13139469417033
(Step 4) Plug your phone to your computer and put the phone in disk drive mode. Now put the superuser .zip on the sdcard and change the mode to charge only.
(Step 5) Put the phone in usb debugging mode. Do this by: home>menu>settings>applications>development>usb debugging.
Also, enable fastboot. Do this by: home>menu>settings>applications>fastboot.
(Step 6) Got to: http://revolutionary.io/ Go down to the downloads section and select either windows or linux. (depending on your machine) Allow the file to download and proceed to the beta key generation.
(Step 7) Select your operating system (windows or linux) and your device and hboot version.
If you are unsure of your hboot version you can check by powering down your phone and holding volume down and the power button (make sure fastboot is turned off before doing this. just make sure to enable it again once you have checked and have the phone powered back up.)
Now enter your serial key (the code you got from under the battery.) select generate key and it will give you a beta key.
Make sure to keep the window open.
(Step 8) Extract the revolutionary.zip and run revolutionary. It should recognize your device and then ask for the beta key. Enter the beta key it gave you, remember it is case sensitive.
(Step 9) Revolutionary will now work its magic. Let it do its thing and DO NOT interrupt it. It may seem like it is frozen but it sometimes just takes a few minutes.
(Step10) After it gets done with all of its operations, revolutionary will ask if you want it to connect to the internet and download the recovery. type the letter "y" and hit enter. It will do it and then reboot.
(Step11) Now you need to flash the superuser .zip. Disable fastboot and and usb debugging and power down the device. Hold volume down and power at the same time until you get the hboot menu. It may check for an image and shouldn't find one. Just let it do its thing. Volume down and select recovery. It will reboot into recover. Now just volume down to install .zip then select choose .zip from sdcard and choose the su 2.3.6.3 efgh signed.zip and select yes. It will flash it. When it is done just reboot.
Congratulations. You are now rooted with superuser and s-off and have full root access.
Thank you, xda. I am grateful for this forum of great and helpful people, without you guys my android life would would be simply mediocre.

k, since i'm on rooted froyo 2.2, how and what options would i choose to upgrade to rooted gingerbread?
i mean could i first do mybackup of apps and data, then manually update via sprint to their latest ruu , then in theory i would lose root and be on the latest sprint update, but then could i follow your instruction to root gingerbread, then after following your instruction in this thread then just restore my apps and data from mybackup- would this work? your help/feedback is certainly appreciated....

For the love of god, if you're already rooted (on 1.6, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3) flash whatever you want. Flash ginger roms, flash froyo roms, flash eclair. Thats the beauty of root. Flash wahtwver the hell rom you want. You Dont have to reroot or something to upgrade your google code.

The only reason to unroot and upgrade would be to get the new Sprint stock GB 2.3.3 ROM to have the latest HBOOT/bootloader. It's something I've been thinking about lately and just trying to debate on when I feel like this hour or so task. [Q] About Kernel Version and Rooting

Hello everyone,
I've recently purchased HTC One S (S3). It is T-mobile phone.
Today I installed CPU Spy in it to check when and for how much my phone goes to deep sleep. But on opening CPU Spy, it gave an error, "No states file found. Are you sure your phone is compatible?. If you are running a custom ROM or kernel, try contacting its developer to inform him that the states file not readable."
My question is, is my phone rooted? Did someone root this phone?
The kernel version is:
3.4.10-g055bd56
[email protected]#1
SMP PREEMPT
(I do not know about kernels or haven't rooted my phone). But this kernel version contains the word "root" in it, may be a stupid question, but does this mean the phone is rooted ?
And secondly is there any way I can check whether my phone is rooted or was ever rooted in the past or not?

as far as I know the "root" in the name is only the name of the user which compiled the kernel.
root is the "admin" user on linux
so, [email protected]#1 means the kernel was compiled by the adminuser on the linux machine with the name abm010#1

Go into bootloader (press down volume and power button simultaneously) if it says locked at the top, you're phone is unrooted.
If it says tampered, it is probably rooted.
If you're phone has a custom recovery (like clockworkmod or teamwinprojects) installed it will probably be rooted.
Check for these things and you'll know if you're phone is clean or not

If you see 'locked' and miss the word 'tampered', it never has been rooted.
The kernel is stock htc, they use the word root in almost all their kernels.

Yeah definitely. I was actually confused to see the word root in kernel version, I thought it was a rooted phone
And no doubt it in awesome phone really, i m loving it. So far no lags, very fast phone (for my usage), responsive.
The only issue so far i have seen is of battery consumption by stock browser, which i have posted in some old similar thread in 'one s general forum'. The stock browser is taking too much battery and there is no option to exit it. It seems it remains in RAM even if i m not using it (though not sure).
Other than that it is one of the best phones. Though it has S3 processor, still havent found any issue or slow response from it.
And the stock keyboard for me was very difficult to type on. But downloaded ICS keyboard from play store, which is quite better.

Well, I myself do not know about it. But lets see if someone else can confirm it. Thanks for your help.
Btw is something like that mentioned in your phone's kernel version as well?

T mobile update error! Please Read!

I got the tmobile update today, and clicked the update thing. IT said that phone will be rebooted. I clicked ok, and walked away for a sec and came back. When I came back there was a orange arrow in a circle with hat in the middle of screen. On the top it says cwm-based recovery. It gives me a list of option including reboot now, install zip from sdcard, factory reset, wipe cach etc. I can scroll up and down, but I can't click reboot system or anything else. Someone please help.
Edit: I clicked the search button while having reboot highlighted and it worked, however my phone says "update failed. Your device will recover the original configuration." should I just try to update again?
Are you running the T-Mobile stock rom? I don't think the OTA update will go through unless you are using the stock recovery also.

Yes I'm using stock. I got the phone off of craigslist, so i'm not sure. I did run one of those root checker apps and it went through saying i don't have a root, but who knows how reliable those apps are?

What is the info in "about phone"? If its not stock it should be rooted. Though you never know.
Sounds like the person you bought the phone from restored most of the phone to stock before selling it to you (good), but forgot to also restore the recovery to stock (not so good). You can still boot up your phone, right? I'd suggest backing up your data somehow (if you can) and then following one of the guides here to return the phone fully to stock, then start from scratch.
Alternately, if you wanna delve and do some research, you can try and find the recovery specific to your stock version and then install that. Once you've got the recovery properly restored, you'll be able to upgrade OTA's via the usual mechanisms.

Yes.
I'm having some issues with the TMobile OTA update as well. Almost every time I reboot my device, I get the notification for the OTA update. Every time I select "update," it does it's thing (warning the device will reboot, rebooting), then it gets stuck in CWM with an error "E:\ Invalid command argument." After I reboot the device, it gives me the "update failed. Your device will recover the original configuration" message.
I don't really care about the OTA update. I'm sick of getting that notification and "installing" it to my device just so it can say it can't install the update. How can I get rid of the notification for a new OTA update?

[Q] Veizon S3 Insurance claim, pre-rooted? OTA Update? Not sure what's been done

Hello all! I need to know what has been done to my insurance replacement phone, and how I can safely update my phone to VRBMV1.
The short version...
I hard bricked my Verizon Galaxy S3 phone by installing a custom ROM wrong, I got an insurance replacement that came pre-rooted, has Clockworkmod already installed and I believe has an unlocked bootloader. Clockworkmod stopped the OTA Update, but I want the update installed. I need to know what to do.
The long, more informative version...
So, I wanted to increase the volume of my Bluetooth headset and after trying different apps and nothing working, I found some modded system files that had a great review that increase all of the phones volumes. The instructions said the phone had to be rooted. Well I rooted the phone and the modded files didn't work. So reading the reviews of the mod, people were saying it worked great with the OMEGA AOPK ROM. So I rooted my Verizon Galaxy S3 i535 phone and installed a the custom rom and hard bricked my phone. I didn't pay enough attention and installed a rom for an i9000 not a i535, at least I think that's what happened... Anyways, I got a new phone through my insurance and the screen wouldn't rotate, so they sent me a 2nd replacement. I got that one in the mail today and it appears to already be rooted, and possibly have an unlocked bootloader, but i'm not sure how to do the VRBMV1 OTA update now.
The first thing the phone did once I activated it was do an OTA update from Verizon, so I let it. Clockworkmod popped up and said it couldn't verify the publisher for the files it was trying to install and asked if I wanted to continue. I clicked NO.
So, since I recently found out what Clockworkmod was and know it's not stock on the S3, I knew someone had done something to the phone. So i'm trying to figure out what exactly has been done, and if it's safe for me to do the OTA update or not.
After searching this forum I found out I can use an app to see if the phone is rooted or not, so I checked it and the app say "root access granted". I also see an app already installed on the phone called SuperSU. So I now know the phone is rooted.
After searching more I found one way to possibly tell if the bootloader is unlocked is to restart the phone, if the Samsung logo goes away within 1 second you probably have an unlocked bootloader. The logo goes away instantly on my phone, so i'm guessing the bootloader is unlocked?
The rest of the phone appears to be the same visually and settings wise as my old S3, so I think it's the stock ROM. "About phone" says Android Version 4.1.2 - Baseband Version i535VRBMB1 - Kernel Version 3.0.13-861013 [email protected] #1 SMP PREEMPT Thu Feb 14 15:16:58 KST 2013 - Build Number JZ054K.I535VRBMB1. Putting the phone Download Mode says everything is "Official", whereas it said "Custom" just before I bricked my old phone.
Sorry this is getting so long. I'll get to the questions now...
From what I've read on the forum, it appears to not be a good idea to do the OTA updates. Without knowing what else has been done to the phone, how can I "safely" get VRBMV1 installed? It appears to fix some problems with battery life and 4G signal, so it would be nice to have.
I for sure don't want to brick another phone as my insurance most likely will not like me anymore. So i'm not sure i'm comfortable trying anymore custom ROMs that already have the update in them. Is there a way to take the phone back to factory with having any of the backups that may or may not have been done before the phone was modded?
Thank you very much!
