[Q] Gingerbread GPS settings - T-Mobile LG G2x

Asking again: would one of you folks who have fast GPS locks with V21e PLEASE post the settings you have from the hidden menu? I'm still getting about 90-120 seconds for the initial lock, and I suspect that the reason mine is worse than yours might be that I fiddled with the GPS settings in the hidden menu a lot before I updated and the last values I set might be wrong for the Gingerbread software.
To review: press 1809#*999# and in the resulting list, select "GPS Test." What do you have for:
Use Extended Conf File
System Settings => Use XTRAS
System Settings => SUPL Setting => SLP Server Setting
and, within the latter, choose Edit from the menu and post the values of
slp address
port
certification file
TLS Setting
Thanks in advance.

I have fast GPS lock and do not have the Use Extended Config File checked.
SLP Server Setting is Google
sulp.google.com
port: 7275
Certification file is blank
TLS settings not checked
Make sure your cell or wireless is on, heard that helps. I also notice no start of lock until I start an app that uses GPS.

Thanks! Just a couple of follow-ups:
1) I assume that "sulp.google.com" is a typo for "supl.google.com"? (When I ping sulp.google.com, I get "unknown host," but supl.google.com works.)
2) Is "Use XTRAS" checked or unchecked?

Yes, a typo. SUPL
The Use XTRAS box is not selected

Okay, thanks again. Must be something else, then, as I have that exact config and still have a minimum of 75 seconds for the initial fix. That's not much of a problem; usually it takes me longer than the TTFF interval to get the address entered in and start up navigation, but it would be nice to have it faster. Oh, well.

GPS Issue

Is any one else having an issue of the GPS taking an extremely long time to get a lock?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Out of the box it worked flawlessly. I messed with a location setting and then gas took around thirty seconds to lock. I turned that setting back on and gas flew again. On average, my gps has a lock by the time the map loads

Could you tell me what your gps settings are then? Also could you dial *#*#1472365#*#* and go to application settings and spul or something like that and list what you have there?
I'd say that driving home the gps got a lock relatively quickly but it was only a lock accurate to within 50 meters. I guess this is good enough for driving but it wouldnt be good enough for biking or jogging.
Mine takes a full minute to lock. I think the issue, at least with mine, is that no matter what I do to the settings, their not saved. So if I go to settings and change location settings, or use *#*#1472365#*#* the settings never seem to save. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong or this is a bug, sure seems like a bug though.
I noticed the first time i tried to get a GPS lock it took forever. But every time since then it has been getting progressively faster. Now it locks and pulls up traffic info within seconds...
I am having a difficult time with the gps locking and it is very inaccurate. I went into the settings and change d the startup to cold
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
whoa, you get traffic info? is that with google maps?
I have been having the same problems. I tried messing with the GPS settings and it seems to have made things somewhat better, though I can't confirm it. Here's what I did, if you are interested.
Dial *#*#1472365#*#*
Go to SUPL/CP Settings
Set server to supl.google.com
Set server port to 7276
Set SUPL Secure Socket to OFF
Go back then go to Application Settings
Set Operation Mode to MS Based
Set Accuracy to 80
Set Use SkyHook to ON
I'm not sure if any of these things made a real difference at all, but I do know that right now my GPS is reporting an accuracy of within 10 meters in a location where I couldn't get a lock before. I'd love to hear if this helps or hurts anyone else's GPS performance.
Thanks this actually fixed my issue of not being able to ft a lock at all. Accuracy is pretty high at 30m but it was spot on in Maps.

Thanks for the tip.
the gps is still not working inside my house, but outside it locks faster outside.
Thanks

I've tried following the directions in the GPS Fix 101 thread under the Vibrant section: no luck... I tried what was suggested abouve: no luck...
Can someone tell em what I'm doing wrong? I know that usually the issue is w/ the operator, not the device and I'm new to Android. I like the phone, but GPS is a BIG reason I bought an Android phone. I need something that is REALLY accurate as we have smaller blocks in some of the towns I go to. Seriously, where my parents live there are A, B, etc. streets and some city blocks are so small there is an "L 1/2 St" ( You can laugh about everything being bigger in TX...)
I do a ton of traveling so this feature is VERY important to me. I just got back from one cross country trip tonight and seldom did I get a good GPS lock and that was on major Hwy's. How does this compare to the ARIA? My sister just got one of those, but hasn't messed around w/ it as it is her first Android phone.
I'd appreciate any help or advice anyone can give. Thanks in advance!!!
If it helps; I was just outside my father-in-laws house and it initially had me about 2-3 blks away in the middle of a golf fairway. It is a clear night, no clouds or heavy trees. I can only detect 1-2 sat.'s when I do a test, and I have a Bodyglove silicon/rubber case/skin.
Ok, I tried it again... In the house I'm about 500 ft off from where I really am and placed in a golf fairway. Outside I am FURTHER off: I'd estimate at least 5 blocks and placed in the middle of a different golf fairway. For comparision sake, my wife's iPhone 3Gs has her within 10-20' while inside the house. I can detect 3-4 sat's. which is the most ever, but it does not use any of them... To me, this is unacceptable and a great cause for concern. What can I do???

Never mind I found it.
Will/Can this be fixed.
I am very disappointed with my GPS performance in an otherwise very enjoyable phone.
GPS is important to me and I am seriously considering returning the phone. There are a couple of other issues, but I'm working through them.
Do you think the issue will be repaired? Guess at how long until fixed? I know it's all just a guess.

They above settings improved my GPS signal acquisition, however, accuracy was still very poor. This was extremely evident when navigating around town. I'm currently testing the following settings and so far things seem to be working well:
Go to SUPL/CP Settings
Set to AUTO config
Set SUPL Secure Socket OFF
Go back then go to Application Settings
Set Operation Mode to MS Assisted
Set Accuracy to 100
Set Use SkyHook to ON
Using these settings I can reliably track 8-9 satellites and lock 4-5. Accuracy tends toward 5-10 meters and signal acquisition is usually within seconds.
I've noticed that after changing settings it can take the GPS a while to acquire a lock. Subsequent uses improve in speed.
I'm by no means an expert on these settings so if anybody sees a problem with them please let me know.

[FIX] Updated: GPS Tracking Issues (Optional FIX)

Team,
boodies posted this in the General section and thought it should be here as well, due to its nature.
Props goes out to boodies, Great Find!!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728611
I tried this and all GPS and compass issues are now fixed. GPS locks on accurately in just a few seconds.
***This fix may not work if you live outside of USA.***
##You can play with the settings if you want to. If you FUBAR your GPS a simple factory reset will return your setting to default. You can do this without going into recovery buy going to Settings / Privacy / Factory data reset.##
Edit:
***************************************************************
Tested Procedure:
1 - Disable "Use Wireless Networks" - Settings / Location & Security
2 - Dial *#*#1472365#*#*
3 - Under "Application settings" Change "Operation Mode" to MS Based
4 - Under "SUPL/CP Settings" Change the SERVER & PORT to supl.google.com and port 7276 [ Do not use www. in front of supl]
5 - REBOOT
6 - Turn back on the "User Wireless Networks"
********************************************************************
Original settings:
Operation Mode: Standalone
Server: www.spirent-lcs.com
Port: 7275
*****************************
Optional New Fix:
1 - Dial *#*#1472365#*#*
2 - Go outside to get an unimpeded GPS fix.
3 - Choose Delete GPS Data button.
4 - Choose Get Position Test button. Let it run for 3 min or until you have 10 to 12 Sat locks and back out.
Thanks goes to Onlyloki for this method.
Haven't had time to test it thoroughly. You may want to do this in conjunction with the first procedure and then do the optional if the first procedure did not work for you. I did both and my GPS is locking even faster. Let me know what you think...
Just some more info I dug up:
Quote from http://www.vzwdevelopers.com/aims/public/menu/lbs/LBSFAQ.jsp
"In MS-Based mode, the network provides the satellite information to the device, based on a rough estimate of where the device is located, and the device acquires the GPS signals from the satellites and calculates its location. After the initial fix, the device operates like an autonomous GPS receiver, until the satellite information must be refreshed, at which time the device goes back to the network to update the satellite information. MS-Based mode is appropriate for applications that require the device location to be updated rapidly, such as a navigation application. Can the GPS work in autonomous mode? No, the GPS receiver requires the assistance of the network elements to acquire its initial location fix."
With the rapid updating we could see an increased drain on the battery. I have not confirmed that yet. If anyone can let us know.
Edit #2:
I was informed by a sales rep at T-Mobile that Samsung is aware of the issue and is going to fix the GPS and the compass issue in their first update.
Mine seems to be working fine after flashing back to stock firmware.
I wasn't able to get a lock before or after the original fix above. After performing the second fix I was able to get a lock but the phone only picked up 8 satellites.
Any idea if I'll have do the second "fix" every time I want a GPS lock?
I was finally able to get a lock using both procedures, but it couldn't track me if I moved.

Same for me. I flashed the stock rom in the other thread, went outside and had a gps lock at 5m in less than 30 second. It locked at 30m in less than 10 seconds. Before this, the best I had was 30m after a long time and it wouldn't track me in my car hardly at all. I will test further tomorrow on my way to work.
Thanks! This worked great, I'm glad I have working GPS now.

You can do a factory reset and reset all the settings to stock
Blarg. I am really not in the position to do a factory reset after I just got my phone the way I like it... Anyone else?
I wrote them down before I started...
“Application Settings” change “Operation Mode” to Standalone & “Skyhook” to OFF
“SUPL/CP Settings” change “Server” to www.spirent-lcs.com “ServerPort” to 7275
what about the others under application settings? I think it was one of those.
Samsung GPS fix is coming in September
This is cool :

GPS Settings after update? -- Launcher Pro users

I'm wondering if anyone who updated successfully and is using Launcher Pro can list the GPS settings (app and supl, etc.) now.
The normal codes for LBSTestMode are, as I understand it, nonfunctioning, but in Launcher Pro you can create a homescreen shortcut to it (long press on screen, select "Shortcuts", then "Activities", and then scroll to and select "LBSTestMode")
Thanks!

I tried adding the lbstestMode settings, it creates the icon but reports "Could not launch the requested activity"

Is there really a dash in the server name between h and slp. (h-slp.) ?
Update:
Got it. If you put Server Type to Auto, it will auto populate the server name above
Thanks Travis. I own a Vibrant and was curious if the new settings would do anything for my phone. It picks up satellites a bit quicker (just a subjective impression), but it doesn't make for the marked improvement that many Captivate users are seeing.
Was worth a shot though.
Yeah, the activities shortcut worked for me even though I'm using TouchWiz. I do have LauncherPro installed, but it's not active - was still able to create the shortcut.

I have gotten the OTA update through Cognition...
I *have* messed with these settings in the past trying to fix the GPS but not for a while and not since many Odin restores.
I checked and was set to Standalone instead of MS Based and was set to Custom for the server, which was set to l-sperint or something.
So is it possible it kept what I changed even after doing factory restores in Odin?
I changed my settings to those in the second post in this thread and am about to take a drive to test this bad boy out. My fingers are crossed. (my GPS did NOT work properly after the update)

Same here and with many others on this forum.
It seems that most people who had messed with the GPS settings before the update are not getting optimal GPS performance after the update (This is true even if they change the GPS settings to stock original that shipped with the update).
Well, like I said I changed the GPS settings back to the settings listed above and took a drive. It took a while, but wouldn't you know it, I saw something I have never seen on my phone before. The little GPS icon in the status bar stayed still. It's always blinked back and forth and it actually stopped leading me to believe I finally found that elusive GPS lock.
Well, it really is a lot better then it was, it actually followed me this time accurately. I took a turn (the one it told me to turn, mind you) and completely lost me. Kept going, then jumped back, jumped to three or four different streets around me before finding me again, and then the map stopped with the circle expanding, and then started to follow me again after a minute. I stopped the car and the GPS just kept right on going like I hadn't stopped.
It's such a shame. It's so screwed up.

GPS under V21e

I've seen several posters mentioning that their GPS TTFF (time to first fix) is much better with the new V21e ROM. That's not my experience. When I wait a couple of hours after my last fix, it's still taking me around 90 seconds -- which is around the time it generally used to take me with the original ROM (although sometimes it was much worse; I'll be happy if it just always takes 90 seconds or so consistently!).
I've also noticed that the GPS subset of the hidden menu (1809#*999#) is somewhat different from the stock Froyo ROM: "Use Extended Conf File" wasn't there before, there were more choices in the "System Settings" section, etc. I've also not been able to get "Get Position" actually to get a position -- the GPS icon flashes, but nothing seems to happen.
And, finally, GPS Test still shows the ridiculously high S/N numbers and below-the-horizon satellite positions.
Any comments from the people who are getting good GPS performance? What kinds of settings do you have for SLP Server, etc.?
Could one or more of you folks who have apparently seen improvement on your GPS TTFF tell me what your system parameters are set to? I just had a 182-second TTFF, so no improvement at all for me.
Specifically, in the hidden menu GPS test, what are the following values? (My current ones are listed in parens.)
Use Extended Conf File (unchecked)
System Settings => Use XTRAS (unchecked)
System Settings => SUPL Setting => SLP Server Setting (T-mobile)
System Settings => SUPL Setting => APN Setting (T-Mobile US/epc.tmobile.com)
Also, if you go into Get Position and select "Start" from the menu, does anything happen? (With the stock Froyo ROM, it showed the data stream from the GPS radio and eventually got a fix; with the V21e ROM, nothing at all happens for me.)
Finally, in the Get Position screen, if you select "Delete aiding data" from the menu and then try to get a fix (using GPS Status, GPS Test, or the application of your choice), do you still get the near-instantaneous TTFF you had previously seen?
I do get very quick fixes, but only within a short while after having previously used the GPS when the ephemeris data is still fresh in the receiver. Are you getting these near-instantaneous fixes after not using the GPS for several hours?

GPS Issues finally resolved... Add google GPS server to SUPL providers

I live in portland, oregon and for whatever reason, have never been able to get a consistent lock when using navigation in google maps. Tried changing to Spirent and then to LG gps servers, changing modes between standalone and ms-based and ms-assisted, and any improvements I got seemed to be fleeting or fitful at best. Then I found out how easy it was to add google's servers to that list and have been getting rapid (pretty much immediate) location locks and much better gps functionality ever since.. If you haven't already, here's how you add google's gps servers to the list in your g2x hidden menu:
open your phone dialer and dial 1809#*999#
Select GPS Test on the following menu
Select System Settings
Select SUPL Setting
Select SLP Server Setting
Press your menu button and then select add
Name it whatever you'd like
slp address: supl.google.com
Port: 7275 or 7276
For certification file I just put in: /data/data/SUPL/googlesupl.dat
Check the TLS box.
Click menu then save.
I also have use XTRAS and Use extended CONF file boxes selected..
For operation mode I have used standalone and ms-based with similar results, which is to say much better performance than on either tmobile or spirent's slp servers. To change operation mode, go to get position, then hit menu button and then select settings and you'll see it there.
Now test by choosing get position, and if it works for you like it did for me, INSTANT LOCKS AND AWESOME GPS FUNCTIONALITY!
hope this helps some of you out there.

That code doesn't work for me. Phone just sits there forever saying "USSD code running" after I enter the code and press the "call" button.
I thought those codes usually started running whatever program they call right after you enter the last digit (i.e. you don't have to press the call button).

That code only works on stock roms and stock-based roms with the LG framework still in place.
Which rom are you running?
Same issue for me. I'm running eagles blood 1.08. GPS is working right now. Figured adding another server can't hurt in case it stops working later...
For non-stock roms (or any rom for that matter) you can just open up gps.conf in /system/etc with Root Explorer and add it manually. It will be obvious where to add a new supl server.
It's one of those days where the obvious eludes me.. Here's what mine says and where do I put it?:

If you are rooted, you have to enable the option of RW (read write).
If you are not rooted, I'm not sure what options you have.
gps worked before but was sluggish compared to now. this increased both inital lock times and following lock times and improved location. simply edit the cfg if your in canada. idk which supl server takes priority if you simply add another through the menu. takes only 5 seconds to root the phone/edit the file.
Phenomenal
SAWEET!!!!....Works like a charm. This was the last thing that I had any issues with and they weren't huge. This now makes this the best phone I have owned. Iphone4 doesn't compare. Thanks OP!
Been using GPS ALL FRICKIN DAY!
Phenomenal with this fix. Instant locates very accurate and working with all apps that use GPS.
Now if I could find the tele-nav files to use on Warrior thus would be rocking!

When I check the "Use Extended Conf File" and "Use XTRAS" both are not checked once I leave the Hidden Menu and go back in. Any ideas on that?
i dont know about you guys but i didnt see any different with this running cm7 122!
i did this without the dialer code because its only for stock roms
my gps only tells me an 100% where i am if i have wifi on.. thats with google maps.
i did this and no changes and my navigation takes for ever looking for gps!

It works flawlessly for me without Wi-Fi on. It's kind of hard to get a Wi-Fi hot spot driving down the
freeway at 75 MPH.

Same here! I've tried everything...i get instant locks with froyo but it takes forever to get a lock on all custom roms.

Try it using the dialer code. I'm using Weapon for my ROM and it works better than it did with stock.
