Best Radio Baseband for Canada? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've tried every radio baseband so far except UCKE1...I'm currently using KC1 after extensive testing it seemed to be the most consistent in poor reception areas and on average a little faster than either KB3 or KD1.
Anyone else in Canada have other basebands they prefer? I'm on Wind which I'm sure probably makes a difference compared to Rogers/Fido/Bell/Telus.

All these modems with all these funky names?!

First off, sorry if this is in the wrong part of the fourm..... anyways, ya, what's up with all these names for modems? What are the differences? There's like 15 different modems that I saw in the development section. Please explain to me what's so.special about each of them.
they are named after the ROM from which they come
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=835272
try one and post the results. they are mostly i9000 and t959 modems from cariers that use the same bands as att. stay away from the t-mobile modems and i9000 modems that dont have the 850 band by default, we were having succsess with the bell jk3/jk4 modems and then the telus seems to give me better gps. now we have a good number of them from many providers, and noone can know what's the best.
i recomend the telus jl3 modem. i get an ocasional warning the the sim was removed, its a bug related to the modem but overall it seems to be the best that i tried, the warning does not affect service in the least. another may be as good without the bug but there are too many to test.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=876391 these should also work, the more people using them the more data we will have to answer questions like this

[Q] doubts about radio

Hi, im from brazil. i have some problems with network signal.
in places where friends of mine from the same network operators (vivo)
have a full 3g signal, i cant even get an edge. but in open spaces i get a good signal. im on CM7 nightlys,
baseband I9020XXKB3,
and my build is GRJ22.
signal on -95dbm now.
my questions are:
can i solve this problem by flashing a new radio such as XXKD1?
what really is the function of the radio?
does the contry that im on now request a diferent radio?!
thx for the attention?
Radio effectiveness differ from user to user. Depending where you are. What might be a good radio to me might be bad to you n vise versa. Unfortunately you will have to try them by yourself and judge.
For me kd1 gives me a better reception but slightly more battery drainage than kb3. Some users reported better data speed. Try it out and see.

thx for the attention man!
i'll try them all.
another thing, do you know if the radio already comes with the ROMs
or i would have to flash it always apart?

[Q] Are my signal strength issues radio related or carrier related

I just switched carriers and find that when I am indoors I get very low signal strength if any ay all. When I am in class, especially ones without windows, my phone can not find my carriers network. This was never a problem with my old phone and I usually would get 3 or 4 bars even in lecture halls with no windows or classes in the basement. I am with Moblicity (Ontario) and some times when I search for networks when mine isn't available Rogers (one of Canada's largest carriers) shows up but sometimes not so I can't determine for sure if the issue is Moblicity or not.
My radio is KD1 and I'm running Oxygen 2.2.2 with Netarchy 1.4.0, though I was having these issues on stock rom and kernel. Can any one with more experience on Moblicity let me know if the issue is their network.
I'm pretty sure the KD1 radio is a i9020t radio version and that matters because the 3g frequency used by those carriers has known issues penetrating walls. As for the signal issues, I'm not so certain. In the past there were phone manufacturers that were known for having better signal than other (read: Nokia) and I still think its true. What I mean is my signal with Samsung devices has never been as good as I've seen in other devices. Perhaps its all in my head but I don't know. Have you tried other radios?

KB3 searches and finds available networks much faster than KD1 but doesn't solve my problem
Then I'm guessing your issue lies in the signal strength of the nexus s on its own. To be honest no smart phone I've owned could match the signal of my old dumb nokias and I don't think you're going to find an easy solution

The signal loss that I'm getting seems a bit extreme though. I take 5 steps into Walmart and I can no longer find my carriers network
Hmm. That is extreme. So you've tried kd1 and kb3. Personally I had the best signal on kb3 but I'm on kf1 now. Maybe try that?

Bell Sensation 4G for use on ATT radio issue

So, I imported a sensation 4G from canada (Bell) and have now S-off, unlocked, rom'd, unlocked CID . everything. since i flashed ARHD my signal has had more issues and switched back and forth from H to 3g alot. I also get higher ping and slower data test speeds with the new ROM
current baseband version is 11.69.3504.00u_11.22.3504.07_M
should i flash something different?
using on AT&T
ive been reading
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1202867&page=1
but im not sure if thats a different radio than what i already have
well i hate to break it to ya but all the radios gave me the same signal strength. i didnt test data speeds though cuz i dont have a data plan. you can still try out the different radios and compare, but ive tried all of them looking for better signal and their all the same

Then how come my signal was better and I got 2mbps faster DL before i updated?
I've messed around with radio files and ril's with my Bell Sensation (on Bell) and thus far for signal I'm using Radio_11.69B.3504.00U_11.24.3504.10_M and RIL HTC-RIL 4.0.0024HMQ
I did notice variations in signal numbers when trying out different radio's and ril's.

The other thing that I noticed tonight when trying out different kernels like faux123, sebastien, bricked is in my stationary tests I'd almost swear there was some variances as well.
flashed Radio_11.69B.3504.00U_11.24.3504.10_M and RIL HTC-RIL 4.0.0024HMQ and went in the same spot on my desk from 3 bars to 4 and H is staying on.. further testing to come..
the Ookla speedtest app wont work for some reason.. only shows 7kbps ..
but my ping is still > 200ms but when i first got it it was 111ms
onward

Best Radio?

I am running the leaked ATT I727UCLE2 radio and I always find my phone switching from 3g to H+. I usually get data drops that require reboots at least once per day. Am I alone here or is this what to expect from the leaked radios? Are there better radios out that I can try?

Depends on weather or not your on ics or GB
I have run ucle2 on practically every rom in our threads . Ics and GB both no problems.
Might be my location though. I am in a non-lte area.

Are you on an ICS rom? If so check your APN values, I had the same problem on AOKP and noticed the values were completely off.
Im running ucle2 and i get the same H+ to 3G problem. I'm on rogers though. I'm gonna try flashing the stock rogers modem and see where it goes.

I am the same. I find the reception on this phone so awful. It's always losing connection and can't keep H+.
There is no such thing as a "best" radio. One radio will work better for one person than someone else. Give what ever radio a try and see if you like it, and if it doesn't work give another radio a try. Just make sure that what ever radio you flash is for the proper android release and you should be good.

ucle2 radio
Does anyone have a link to a working ucle2 modem?
