[Q] Phone bricked after LG update. Tried Cyanogen, still bricked - T-Mobile LG G2x

Hey, so, my LG update never finished, and I followed this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1180331
But I do not have XP, and the KDZ program doesn't work on Windows7 (I have both 64 and 32 bit)
So I googled around a bit, managed to get a recovery thing loaded on the phone (ClockworkMod Recovery v3.0.2.4)
Then, I tried installing Cyanogen, which I've heard good things about.
I followed this guide perfectly: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/LG_G2x:_Recovery_and_CyanogenMod
The only thing that didn't match the guide was the result of rebooting the device from the recovery menu.
The phone still shows the:
S/W Upgrade
Please wait
while upgrading...
screen. =\

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1180331
once you're on that software update screen, you have to try everything known to man to finish the update. no matter what rom or recovery you flash, it won't get past that screen until you get the update flashed correctly.

it does work on win7,for some. maybe doing a clean install of your os might help. make a backup to dvd or external hard drive first. that way you can just restore after you update. or get a hold of someone with an xp pc. or call lg.

There has to be another way. I hate re-installing OSes. and LG is pretty useless when it comes to fixing things.
I did try installing "XP Mode" but the update failed to install.... and apparently there isn't a version of Virtual PC that can run the XP Mode Hard Disk without having been installed via windows update. =\

if there was "another way" someone would have posted it.
if you absolutely intend on fixing it yourself, you need to try everything possible. if you're looking for an easy way out, not gonna happen. have you tried it on win7? it's worked for some people.

Yeah. I've tried my balls off =(

I've discovered that the KDZ program will unfreeze if I unplug the phone from USB while it's updating. (I waited a few hours to make sure this would be safe).
I'm using Windows XP Professional 64bit.
I get this:
[R&D Test Tools Log File]
02:12:23 : Launching SW update
02:12:23 : Unpacking KDZ
02:12:24 : KDZ file extraced
02:12:25 : Files were extracted.
02:12:25 : LGMobileDL Load.
02:12:25 : Port = -1
02:12:25 : Connecting to phone
02:12:25 : PHONE WAS NOT FOUND!
02:12:27 : ===FINISHED===
I have to reboot the phone before the KDZ program will do anything other than the above log.
But then KDZ freezes again. and.. the process repeats. So... It seems that there is some connection issue between KDZ, and the Phone in my version of windows.
EDIT:
something else I noticed:
When I plug me phone into the comupeter: it shows
LGE CDMA Composite USB Device : Ready to use
Unidentified Device : ( ) Installing driver software
Unidentified Device : ( ) Installing driver software
could this be part of the problem?
I tried installing the drivers linked to from the thread that claims to fix this issue, but it said that I had newer ones.
That I had version 3.0.2 and that was never than 3.2 =\
EDIT2:
In device manager, the unknown device is this: USB\VID_1004&PID_6000_DIAGInterface
EDIT3:
Somehow one of the unidentified devices identified itsself.
LGE CDMA USB Serial Port (COM3) : Ready to use

I would try XP 32-bit if you can. Crazythunder is right. At this point, you need to either get the KDZ flasher to work, or send your phone to LG.

This was my hangup at one point also. In order to have your phone recognized again download the latest LG g2x drivers from LG, uninstall current drivers, reboot PC, install new drivers and then try update tool again.

I tried with two Stock Roms...
Please help me in this....
Basically on a windows machine you download kdz updater and uncompress it as it is a zip file.
Download from here.
This is what I did on an xp laptop.
I had to down load the drivers from the official lg site. when here you enter the code that is on the box the phone came in or under the battery.
Chose the your county and laguage from the drop down box at the top right of the dialogue box. Then from the middle you can choose the drivers. For some reason I had to find the files and click on them to install the driver.
Ok once you decompress kdz updater there are three seperate files to work with. 1. windows enabler. 2. msxml.msi 3.KDZ_FW_UPD.exe
You will also need to download the right file to restore with,You can find it with google.
Please check here the The_ERROR thread wich explains it very well:
[ROMS] Original LG Firmware list.
Install msxml now.
Now you have to boot the phone into rescue mode. On Lg Optimus One turn phone off even if it means taking out the battery.
Press power - volume up - back (this button is next to the home button).
Connect to usb now.Computer found new hardware and installed four drivers.
Then open device manager. Left click my computer - properties - device manager. You need to disable the lg modem driver. Left click on it and disable.
Now launch kdz updater. There will be a drop box on left set to 3gspt or similiar. on the right drop box set to diag. The long box just above the info box with a file at the side lets you browse to find restore file. e.g. V10a.00.kdz.
Double click the button below and let it do it's thing. Took 15min. My phone shut down and came up with an error at the last minute. Anyway I rebooted and all was good.
Everything was the way I left it. Just had to re-root.
My only real problem was getting the kdz installer to see the phone.
After installing the drivers restart pc. If it finishes quickly and just before saying finished it says phone not found try removing all phone related drivers including nokia pc suite and the lg suite and remove and reinstall the drivers.
LITTLE ADVICE :You should use some search and keep your eyes open
Two threads related to this are there on the first page itself.
i need help stuck on emergency mode and computer wont recognize phone it did a at the beginning but when connecting I got partition error table on LGMDP, also got an error on KDZ saying someting with error code 1002 ... please help don't wanna take out the battery cause i'm afraid i would have officially bricked it as in it wouldn't start back up! please willing to try anything at the moment!
Just follow the steps which I mentioned above and everything will be alright.

No, i suggest you do not use kdz updater, it had high chances of bricking your phone.

It once bricked my phone too when I removed battery in emergency mode. But after that I used it many times and it worked flawlessly.
You can definitely use kdz, when you know what are you doing.

Fix for corrupted baseband

This is only for people who have corrupted baseband issues (no signal, ? battery icon, and baseband is listed as unknown); if you are stuck at the s/w upgrade screen, you want another thread.
If you are stuck with a corrupted baseband and are unable to flash a .kdz through the updater, keep reading. I have only tried this on xp, and I have tried it with the kdz software updater and uptext_mod2.
1. Set up your drivers, hold volume down, and plug the phone in.
2. Open your device manager, go to modems, and disable the LGE android modem, leave device manager open
3. Start either KDZ_FW_UPD or UpTestEX_mod2_marwin, load the correct .kdz (v21e_00.01.kdz worked for me) and select cs_emergency, it should say Launching SW Update, then Unpacking KDZ
4. As soon as the next group of lines fills in (starting with KDZ file extracted, ending with Call fn_StartUpgrade, enable the LGE android modem in device manager
5. It will give you several lines with wParam and lParam numbers, and disconnect and reconnect once, then when it is finished, it will show the LG logo. Put your battery back in and boot, it should work, if not, try another .kdz (v21y_00.kdz would not work for me).
I used this to fix my g2x with a corrupted baseband, recorrupted it and uncorrupted it again to verify it works. Thanks to kosh2thamax for the cs_emergency idea,
i tried this but it stopped with this msg "MOD UPtestEX MCF has stopped...." anything i need to do to keep it working? thanks.

hey, i downloaded v21y_00.kdz because v21e_00 was not working and switched usb also. This time it worked. Just want to thank you very very much. Whew, I was ready to give up and spend the money for a new phone. Keep it up.

No connection to network Help please!

I just picked up a used LG O3D P925 that has no connection to any network (well wifi works). When I tried to update using the LG mobile update tool. I had a no success detecting automatically so I clicked recovery and manually entered the IMEI and S/N. Soon I got a failure error. Prior to this I read a thread about OTA firmware updates but I have no button for OTA update.
I tried rooting using megatron (windows version) and installed the LG drivers but windows keeps detecting new hardware and wants me to install drivers. When I click run it just says "daemon started" and I wait for a couple of minutes and .... nothing. When I check the apns either none are listed or I get a message about "reorganizing internal processes. please try again later " ...
I contacted someone who had their phone replaced by carrier for same issue. Possibly the carrier has blocked the phone from network? ...O I hope not
.... Help !?
is it a stock rom goto play store dl get ril what does it say. sounds like bad based band
Post-:
Rom:
Baseband:
RIL:
GetRIL says "unknown RIL found" (gives me an md5sum)
for Baseband it says XMM6360
then there are 3 options to DL but since I don't have root I am unable to DL these updates ... says " no permission".
here is the info from about:
LG- P925g
Android Version 2.2.2
Baseband Version L6260_MODEM_SIC_01.1042.00
Kernal Version 2.6.35.7
Build number FRG83G
Software Version LGP925g-V10c-JUL-20-2011
ok I have succeeded getting root using Unlock Root. Now when I open getRIL and select a RIL to DL the "ok" button is "greyed out" or not available, just the cancel button. So after I cancel and select another RIL to DL & install I get the superuser permisson granted message followed by a message that says "The system partition needs to be writable.... and back to the greyed out ok and cancel choice.

I seem to get hung up on the step where you check the device manager for current active "COM" ports. When I connect the USB (holding vol up + power) I get OMAP4430 appearing for a second under ports and I get the "windows has detected new hardware" flashing on and of simultaneously. The phone doesn't seem to want to boot into download mode and it doesn't vibrate after 3 seconds.

hope it helps
I have managed to make things worse ... :crying:
Now my phone is stuck on the AT&T boot screen. The only way I can power off is to remove the battery.Yes I tried flashing the v20P kdz after I thought I could do much worse.
I no longer have a problem getting my computer to recognize the drivers. I'm not sure if I flashed the v20C kdz without a problem or not. I thought I was able to root and things were ok except that I still had no network connectivity. I don't recall exactly what I tried next but I think I lost root somehow and some of the installed apps began misbehaving. I also noticed that superuser was not installed. I tried to root again but couldn't. I treid to flash a kdz again but again not very successfully. I also tried repairing the IMEI using this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1734330
I flashed the CP ? but didn't manage to restore the imei.
Now I when I power on I get the AT&T animation ... I tried to flash back to the 20C kdz without and luck. Now I have no idea where to go from here and would be grateful for some input.
try updating again but let the process fully complete http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1244490
If you were stuck on the art boot screen after flashing v20p you should have don't a hard reset and wiped all data. I had the same issue when going from v10k to v20p. As far as the no signal goes I'm not sure but it could be a bad radio or it could have been stolen and deactivated by AT&t

I can't flash it, because I can't find that start_fastboot app

now have a question, If I have 170mb kdz for 21e, can I use it in FlashTool? Because to download BIN_LGP920AT-00-V21e-EUR-XXX-Apr-19-2012 , it's gonna be another hour, because where file was uploaded, download speed is so slow...........

OMAP drivers still was bugged for me, eventho I tried lots of ways to fix it.
eventually, I used smart flash with 21e AP and CP and it flashes successfully
P.S. I do put back battery when flashing starts, otherwise ,it restarts at partition part!!!

[ROM][GUIDE] LG Optimus Zone 3 (LG VS425PP) Stock 5.1.1 Firmware & Restoration

LG OPTIMUS ZONE 3 - UNBRICKING GUIDE AND 5.1.1 FACTORY FIRMWARE
This guide has two main objectives: (1) for those with a bricked device who want to restore to the latest factory firmware image; and (2) those who need .kdz Stock 5.1.1 Factory Firmware files.
1. UNBRICKING THE LGVS425PP:
The Verizon LGVS425PP comes, pre-installed on the device, a Windows compatible LG Software Upgrade and Repair utility. When connected via micro USB cable, your device will connect to your PC as an installer and, if you look in your PC directory, you will see an installation directory for the Verizon LG utility. Inside that directory is an .exe file that will install the upgrade/repair utility on your PC. When launched, the utility will auto detect your device, determine if a firmware update is available, and give you an option to repair your device. The repair option will backup your existing userdata (depending on the level of damage to the firmware), download the most recent firmware build for your device, and flash your device to complete stock condition.
Of course, there are those who bricked their devices before being able to install the Verizon LG Upgrade/Repair utility on their PCs. And this utility appears difficult to locate for download on the internet. So, below is a download link for the utility:
DOWNLOAD LINK
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B1Sfod4HWfk2elpGQ3JEbzF4Q0E?usp=sharing
The Verizon LG utility should install the correct USB mobile drivers on your PC. But just in case any driver issues arise, download and install the following LG United Mobile Driver package:
DOWNLOAD LINK
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1Sfod4HWfk2RHY2c29mTWg1Rkk/view?usp=sharing
Once the utility is launched, make sure your PC is connected to the internet, put your device in download mode by holding +Volume while connecting your micro USB cable for your PC connection. The utility will then detect your device. Select the REPAIR option and follow the on-screen instructions.
2. STOCK 5.1.1 FACTORY FIRMWARE
The following link is for four software versions of stock 5.1.1 Factory Firmware .kdz files for the Optimus Zone 3: VS425PP2, VS425PP4, VS425PP7 & VS425PP8. Also in the link is the LG United Mobile Driver, the LG-UP flashing tool, and the LG-UP .DLL for the VS425PP. Use these tools at your own risk. I am not responsible for bricked or inoperable devices. I want to thank each and every member in this thread who has tested and reported their findings and issues. That narrows it down greatly. And thanks guys for your patience.
As to rooting the Zone 3, several recent advancements have been achieved and full root access is now possible. Thanks to @Astr4y4L, a comprehensive root package is available for download. http://astrayalslanding.dynu.net:88/Android_Development/ Click on this link and scroll down the the bottom and click the projects link. His package includes precise instructions and alI the files you will need to root this phone. I am currently drafting a concise tutorial for downgrading this phone. Instructions for downgrading can be found within this thread, albeit somewhat scattered. I will update the OP accordingly as further progress is made. Guys, please be sure to thank @Astr4y4L for his unceasing hard work and development on this device. If you like his work and benefit from it, donations are always nice, even if just a couple bucks.

I was attempting to test this on a phone i purchased just yesterday. The about phone section identifies this phone as a vs425pp but under the battery it's identified as a VS425LPP.
The drivers install successfully. The LGUP and LGUP .dll install fine. But when i start LGUP i get an error saying that it can't load the model. looks like i can't attach a picture probably because i'm new but i do have screencaps. I've tried it on my laptop where i do most of my android stuff and on my desktop, same problem on both. According to the LG Mobile Support Tool this one has VS245PP5 installed.
LGUP will start without the phone connected telling me there is no compatible handset attached and then show me a com window. But when i connect the phone it throws the same error and exits.
I must be the biggest idiot, because I cannot figure out how to get into download mode - I power off the device, then while holding the power and volume up key I plug in the usb cord from the Computer. I get the buzzing on the phone, the Verizon logo comes up, and i'm on the home screen. What am I doing wrong?

never mind, I got it - it's the volume down and power, not volume up -

ok, apparently, that's the restore function, not the download mode - I can't seem to figure out the combo of buttons for the download mode - as above, I go volume up and power then when it vibrates I plug it in?? any suggestions??

I was attempting to test this on a phone i purchased just yesterday. The about phone section identifies this phone as a vs425pp but under the battery it's identified as a VS425LPP.
The drivers install successfully. The LGUP and LGUP .dll install fine. But when i start LGUP i get an error saying that it can't load the model. looks like i can't attach a picture probably because i'm new but i do have screencaps. With your device connected go to Device Manager. Look under Portable Devices, Ports and Com's, etc and look for LGE notations of your device. If you see a yellow question mark by any of the LGE notations, your issue is drivers.

i have a
Modems > LGE Mobile for VZW USB Modem - Operational
Ports (COM & LPT )> LGE Mobile for VZW USB Serial Port (COM4) - Operational
Portable Devices > LGE Android MTP Device - Code 10 device cannot start
I initially had the 4.1.1 drivers installed from the LG Mobile Support Tool. After uninstalling those and installing the 4.0.4 version from this thread i still have Code 10 error on LGE Android MTP Device.

Ok I have seen that MTP Device error before. It is not uncommon. Search the forums for a driver resolution. Off top of my head I cannot recall, but I do know there are threads on it.

The initial solution was to reinstall the drivers, did not work.
Second solution discovered in reference to samsung devices was to delete a registry key called UpperFilters from the WPD section. Did not work.
The third solution i've found involves downloading the Android SDK and installing it.
This last one seems sort of like a nuclear option. But i'm running out of ideas. the MTP and PTP transfer modes install and start correctly when the device is booted normally but when booted into download mode it just goes code 10. I'm working on the third option now but it will take a while to download.

Yes that SDK is a bulk of a download and installation. But may be your fix. Very odd I agree

It didn't work. Still code 10. I tried on a third computer, an old Dell laptop running Windows XP. It gave a strange error Code 28 saying something about an invalid service section of the INF. But i think this may be a red herring and actually be caused by Windows Media Player 11 not being installed. I'll have to setup an installation of Windows 7 to try that.
Edit: looks like i'm going to have to give up trying to fix the code 10 error because NONE of the information from google is relevant to this. All the information is for the phone being started normally and being unable to access the MTP file transfer through normal working operation. None of it relates to this "download mode" that LG has implemented. I wish this were easy like my Galaxy Nexus was back in the day.

Yeah tell me about it. The good ol' Nexus days were much simpler. I'm like you....I think its a Red Herring of some sort you are dealing with. Something so obvious and so simple that it is hiding behind a thin wall.
I'm searching right now trying to help too.
Hi MotoJunkie01,
I appreciate you putting together this guide but I have to say that I no further along than everyone else here. Similar to Metalchic I received the "can't load model" error from LGUP. Googling around i found that I was missing the LGUP_common.dll file. Found that and LGUP opened fine and found my device. Tried to flash VS425PP2 kdz got to about 9% and received "Secure device, But Unsecure image" error. And that's as far as i got.
As far as the LG Android MTP driver goes i also receive the code 10 cannot start error but only when the phone is in download mode. Otherwise the driver loads fine when the phone is "booted". I dont know jack about rooting phones and have never done it before. I had this one lying around and thought I'd try it. Hopefully all this helps to narrow down the issue.

Thanks for pointing out the common .dll file. I will edit that in my thread for download. I am not sure on the MTP error. I have two of these Zone 3s lying around and neither gives any type of error on MTP. Almost certainly sounds like a driver related issue though. Im going to uninstall drivers and everything on my end, do factory resets, and reinstall everything and walk back through the process from scratch. See if I can pinpoint the issue.

like roscoemctavish i was able to grab the LGUP_common.dll file and put it into ..\LG Electronics\LGUP\model\common and then LGUP started detecting my phone. It only takes the kdz file type under the Upgrade selection. But like roscoemctavish i ran into the 'unsecured image secured device' error. Still code 10 on the MTP driver but i don't think it's related to this. Maybe though.

So in your instance, did the .kdz file flash for you with no issue or did it stop at some point?

OK. So both you guys having the stop at 9% please try this. Rename the VS425PP2 file to the filename VS425PP6. Then flash the .kdz.
For now I'm editing the thread down to unbricking via the Verizon LG utility and I'll give links to the .kdz files. It's back to the drawing board guys. I'm very sorry. Please know that I am working hard on it.

No worries man and I appreciate just having this as a potential option. If it matters I have tried to root my phone with Kingoroot. Of course it fails but the software status has changed to "modified". Current software version is VS425PP5.
I did try changing the filename "VS425PP2_02_ARB00.kdz" to "VS425PP6.kdz" and flashing with the same result (Stops at 9% with unsecure image error). There is a log file in the "\LGUP\model\common\LOG" folder which when opened in notepad produces unreadable text. Let me know if I can provide anything else.
Thanks!
