When you visit a hotspot it will has for your phone number which my guess is to verify if you have the iphone plan on your line.
I have DSL from AT&T for my home computer internet. I use the "pro" version of DSL which gives me the Free WIFI access for my laptop and/or cell phone when I'm mobile. I have my cellular service with Verizon Wireless for my XV6800 and can use wifi on that phone free at any AT&T sponsored WIFI hotspot including many MickeyDee's or Startucks, Barnes & Noble, etc., etc. I can use my laptop with WIFI there as well, independently of each other.

I too have the fastest DSL from AT&T and I too get free wifi from AT&T hotspots. I have an iPhone 3G and also a Diamond (waiting for the Touch Pro "AT&T Fuze" to purchase) and I use free wifi even from before the release to iPhone users.
The iPhone and BlackBerry have created a class of know-it-alls who can prove their point about anything, be it geography, history or cooties, thanks to their mobile Internet connections. But the rest of us had refuge: Sometimes, they were out of range of a quick cell network.
how does ATT know that some people have iphones? I've never told them what kind of phone I have.
What if my friend gives me his iphone, how does ATT know that I have one?
I think the IMEI would rat you out or maybe even the contract you own.

Just double checking to see if this was possible on non-iphones...
its possible to change your imei but it is illegal to do so most places, AND if you ever got caught with it you would probably look REALLY suspicious, as in a terrorist
I live in Canada but Rogers has a unlimited web-browsing plan for $7 and ppl have forums on the internet talking about spoofing your phone to look/communicate like another phone (the iphone in this case).
I'll try finding the link.
Hi guys,
Was wandering if someone could help me out with, rather, strange question.
I want to use an Android phone to make calls, but do not want to sign up with any cell phone company. I live in New brunswick, Fredericton, we have free wireless internet.
I want to make use of it, but so far I have not found a concrete answer.
I have started a thread about this on another android forums, if you want more details, or just ask me:
http://forums.androidandme.com/topic/how-to-use-free-internet-with-android-without-cell-plan
Any help is Great appreciated!
http://www.techradar.com/news/phone...e-accused-over-android-skype-app-block-628218
maybe if they get it to work
with skype you still of cause are charged to pay when you call normal phones
Yeah, that's interesting.
I find the whole situation with cell phone companies stupid, charging outrageous rates for what should really be included in your home internet fee.
In any case, I was wandering if a solution exists for right now It doesn't have to be free, but at least cheaper than buying an unlimited plan from rogers or what-not.
Or are there other phones (except Android) that can do this instead?
Thanks
yes skype is out for
windows mobile
heck even iphone got it
but you have to remember that if you call normal phones
cell or land-line you have to pay skype as they offer the link to
gsm and land-line which have no connection to the Internet you get
when you connect to wifi
just wanted to make sure you didn't have the impression that it was 1 big network
it's not
kinda like one can't send an email to a person with not computer and expect a free service
which print the email and put it in the physically mailbox of the person
I understand that I have to pay skype or someone else for calling landlines. That is Fine with me.
However, with Skype (for example and iphone/windows mobile?), can I use the phone even if I don't have a SIM card/cell phone plan?

yes you can even use a non phone pda with wifi or an ipod touch
when you have wifi you have the same possibilities as with a computer
That sounds cool. Thanks,
Another question:
Is there a way I can use my phone/pda as a Gps device?
If I have no plan, I can't connect to satelite either?
Or do some phones provide some kind of tom-tom enabled capabilities?
Hi i have mobile wifi router installed on my phone (came with duttys rom) and i was wondering if using it my network could tell and charge me extra?
I have an unlimited data plan but i know I could pay an extra £10 and then my phone could be used as a mobile boradband device, does this mean that if i try to use the mobile wifi router program that my carrier would be able to tell and block it or charge me extra?
Also is there a way to share the phone connection with a pc without using wifi and without having to buy the networks extra mobile boradband package because I will almost never use it but its good to know i have the option if i go on holiday or whatever, maybe i want to prows the web in the garden soemthing like that
no wifi works even if you don't have a sim card in the phone
just like pda's with wifi and no phone
just like your laptop connecting with wifi to the router
just like your desktop connecting with wifi or cable to the router
no its not that, mobile wifi router converts your phone into a router so your laptop/whatever can connect to it and use its data connection to connect to the internet, I was just wondering if doing this the network can tell and then charge me extra as they usually charge for using your phone as an internet access point
the connection from the phone to the laptop or computer is free anything wifi
the cost to go onto internet will however depend on your satat rates, just to be sure id ask your operator
Hi thanks for trying to help, but thats not what I was asking. I know wifi connections are free what I was asking is if my operator will be able to tell the difference between my phone using its data connection and my laptop using my phones data connection.
The reason I ask is that I have unlimited data for my phone.
but
you can pay extra money to upgrade your account to allow your phone to be used as a mobile broadband dongle
but if they can't tell the difference between phone using its data and pc using its data then there is no need to pay the extra money.
is this the case or am i missing something
Depending on your operator, there could be a max of MB's. So it might be 500 MB/month, but also unlimited internet. With that, you are able to use it without any extra costs.
Is it possible to somewhat put up a wifi network on your phone via some program (WiFi Router is one I think) and connect to it and use it ON your phone?
aaah teething
as far as I know they should not be able to detect it
but I could be mistaken
If the usage is large 500MB/month, carrier might suspect unusual activity. teething is paid service with some carriers.
I have a G1 tethered on T-mobile USA. I have talked to customer service. They said they do not support tethering but that it is not illegal. Their solution is to allow a soft cap of 10gb of data service with their unlimited plan and once you reach the cap they throttle the internet speed down from 3g to 2g levels. Not to horrible. I play all my online games with my G1 connection, Counter Strike Source, Perfect World International, Flyff, and download quite a bit of music and usually only reach about 300mb a day which gives me a full month of service before i reach that cap. And at the start of the new month I get reset.
I´m in the same situation.
I´ve got an unlimited data plan, which covers phone/PDA use, but EXCLUDES using the device as a modem for a PC/Laptop (tethering).
I´ve tethered it ocasionally, and it worked.
My carrier didnt charge me extra, nor blocked. BUT i know the risk exists. I´ve tried to research.
What i read is that carrier COULD tell if you are tethering by traffic analysis (one way is looking the user agent of your web pages request, which identifies yor browser), but that this traffic analysys is not practical, and most carriers dont do it....by now.
So of you tether ocasionally, you are safe.....today, ....until carriers perceive there is a number significant enough to make profits,of people tethering under a data plan intented just for phone use, then they can start charging you.

ha nice, well im gonna give it a go anyway and see what happens, its just funny that they specifically advertise to upgrade your account to be able to do this as if they can somehow tell. I dunno what mobile boradband is like in the us but in the uk there advertising it all over the place as if its someting people really need instead of something that is ocasionally useful, apart from in your case its mad how much you do through your phone.

thanks for this, if the only thing they can do to check is by the web requests of your browser surely there is a way to pretend to be opera mobile for example which should receive the full web anyway. Anyway as you say I won;t be using it much if at all so if i do fancy it i think ill just take the risk and see what happens worse they can do is charge me a little extra and i may even be able to avoid that by pleeding ignorance

I don't quite understand this question, you could use the program i mentioned to make your phone into a wifi access point and use its data connection to the internet then anything you like could then connect to it e.g. another phone, psp, ps3 laptop .....
is that what you ment?
Ive searched high and low throughout the internet and found results in which didnt work what so ever...I pay for LAN and would love to use my connection on my phone and dont wanna buy a wifi modem..i live by mt rainier....NO SERVICE lol...i pay for 4g and unlimited data. So any help would be greatly appreciated!
It seems very possible since windows phones can do it. A program really needs to be developed for this situation....
I'm not so sure if you can reverse tether, but I know you can make your computer an AP if your computer has a wireless card. The term you're looking for is Internet Connection Share. ICS for short. I"m not an expert in the field, so i'm not entirely sure how to set it up.
I want to use a smart phone tethered to my home PC as my gateway to the Net. I've looked at all the plans available where I live and to help get some advice from the forum I decided to just pick the closest cell provider to me rather than ask questions about every phone available to me.
Metro PCS was the closest store and I assume their phone plans and phones will be a lot less than Verizon, also less phone choices. My "only" need of the phone is its Wifi connection. I want "all" the apps not necessary for such - gone. The phone will never be used for calls, text, surfing so I want apps like Facebook, Twitter, etc... all gone. I'm not going to need the browser(s) supplied afaik so deleting them eliminates hacker attacks as I'll never surf the Web via the phone. All I want is Wifi to get my home PC online.
Here's where I find things are a bit tougher to figure out. I see many root tools available but it seems not all phones can be easily rooted.
I see no reason to buy the expensive phones as I'm never going to use them, only the wifi connection. I've looked up some of the models and see that Samsung has a large following here. The J3 Prime, ON5, J7 Prime as well as LG Aristo, K7 and Stylo 2 Plus are "reasonably" priced, any comments on these phones?
I've read that some of you only freeze the apps, others root the phone and even change the ROM to get what you want. I will only be using my home pc to surf and know how to protect it but I'm not sure if I need any protection on the cell, especially if I never use it on the Net. Is my phone safe as I plan to use it?
I've started downloading software for rooting, Twrp, Odin, Kingrootz and Samsung drivers. I read that it's best to backup your phone before rooting, Titanium and one other (?) program were mentioned so I will get them too.
What other things should/must I do? Please post links to any threads that may have addressed this issue! I'm new to all of this but can learn. I am reading threads here hoping to get a better handle on rooting but getting personal proven advice just makes life so much easier.
BTW, I guess many of you use wifi tethering since it's part of your plan, how well does it work? I'm only checking email and doing searches, not into video, music or gaming. I probably could use Freedom Pop since I'd use so little data but am not sure how their coverage is in my area. Verizon $$$ and Metro PCS (cheap) have great coverage for me (tethering included in price). But if anyone wants to comment about providers or which ones are nosey about your surfing habits and if you use TOR or a VPN let me know, thanks.
Let me rephrase some of my prior post to hopefully get a response. When I tether a cell phone to my home PC, will the fact that the phone will never be used for anything other than connecting my PC to the Net basically keep the phone itself safe? I do want to root the phone to remove any apps that could spy on me, and remove the browser since the phone itself will never be used to surf the net. Questions still remain concerning the phone models I listed in my 1st post. I most likely will go with a cheap Samsung phone, following the rooting procedures that I can find on this site. Just would like to hear from anyone who is using their phone as a tethering device, are there any problems I might encounter? Should I ask my questions in a different forum?

Why not buy a hotspot then? Roughly the same monthly bill as using a phone and less issues because all it does is WiFi without all the phone stuff. No apps to snoop on you, no need to worry about security on the hotspot(its basically just a router, not a processing unit with an operating system that can be invaded), just access to internet. And no need to worry with rooting, the software involved in rooting, issues with rooting, backing up/restoring, deleting apps, etc..

But - where would I get the Wifi access to begin with? As far as I know there is nothing but open Wifi from my neighbors, hardly secure. I need internet access and felt that the cheapest way to go is Freedom Pop or Metro PCS cell phones. Cable and Fiber are $$$$$$$$ by comparison.

I'm talking about a mobile hotspot that is activated on a mobile network like a phone with monthly service(either prepaid or on a monthly billing cycle) but isn't a phone, it just connects to the mobile network and shares that network with the devices that connect to it.
Such as a Verizon 4G jetpack or a Straight Talk mobile hotspot from Walmart. All the mobile carriers offer them, including Metro PCS, US Cellular, Boost, Virgin, etc...
