After using the promo-code somewhere in June to download three free games, and having exhausted other games, I decided to take a stab at SO:RoA. I've always been, and still am, quite vocal against Gameloft's way of doing things, and I mostly have found their games average (Star Batallion) or mere crud (Let's Golf 2).
It turns out they may be up to something here in Sacred Oddysey. Mainly because while I don't care the smallest bit about the plot or the game mechanics (I don't like Zelda games full stop), the voice acting tells me that the characters aren't caring either, and tropes are being subverted and played with easily. For Gameloft, whose games tend to take themselves too seriously for their own good, that's quite the accomplishment I'm not too advanced right now in the game, but I hope they keep this level of VA throughout it: not stellar, not engorging, but funny. 'Tis the first time that I'm laughing with a GL game!!

So, what you're saying is that the game is ****, but the voice acting is great?
The game is meh, but the voice acting makes you want to keep playing. It is a rare thing to see, because voice acting tends to suck in these games.
I am very sensitive about voice acting and sound...
Mine keeps randomly creasing... Common trait found on most game **** games.

I like Zelda style games, and this game scratches that itch. The game doesn't care about being a complete Zelda ripoff (like your horses being named Miya & Moto or the very first boss) and the gameplay is decent fun. But it FCs very, very, very, very frequently. I haven't been able to complete the Fire dungeon because of this.
Seems like Gameloft's QA department doesn't exist or is just too busy playing Angry Birds to care.

Pretty good game. Getting some artifacting in the graphics every once in a while. Big colored polygons in the sky which actually prevent you from seeing where you're going at times. Anyone else get that?
Sweet find thanks. Just bought it.
Works fine as far as GFX goes, but it keeps randomly pausing during a race....?
Anyone else getting random pauses?
No pauses here...try turning the graphics down in settings.....however i run it with graphics all the way up without issue.

with graphics all the way up the framerate is is very crappy , in my opinion there shouldnt be a option to turn down the graphics to gain performance when your promoting how advance the tegra chip is.
It's playable on max settings but pull it all the way to the bottom and you'll notice how much more fluid it is, possibly giving you a greater sense of speed.
I dont see how you guys stand the controls on these games. Maybe its because i am from the NES age buti suck with motion controls. Sad because it keeps me from playing some good stuff on here.

this game needs multiplayer, its good game for about 15 minutes or so then never to be played again other . multiplayer would bring hours of enjoyment if they ever implamented it
I was a big Hyrdo Thunder Game. I played it when it was on the PS1.
When Xbox Live had Hyrdo Thunder last summer I downloaded. A pretty good game for Xbox live and looks good Full HD.
I knew the guys that made Hydro Thunder was the same ones that made Riptide.
I played the Need for Speed Shift game on a the Best Buy Acer Tablet. I was trying to figure out which game. I ended up going with Riptide, just because it seems like it would be a little more fun over all. (I was never sure if NFS would work on the Transformer).
The Riptide game is for the most part just like Hydro Thunder. Thats good and bad.
Good because you know what you are getting. No real surprises.
Bad, nothing really that knew. Instead of collecting Boost like you do in Hyrdo Thunder, in Riptide you do tricks off of jumps. Not bad, but takes some getting use to. I do get some flicker problems a couple of times. But Over all no real problems. I'm trying to figure out how much Battery power this uses.
Over all I think it is worth the money if you are looking for a good arcade racer.
Their isn't a lot here. You are racing a jet ski around a course.
I bought this phone for my wife and didn't think it would impress me as much as it has. The screen is simply amazing and now I'm thinking of purchasing this phone. The only thing that is keeping me from buying it is the lag when I play some games. Is anyone here a big player of games like Grave Defense, Guns n Glory, Robo Defense, etc? Pretty much tower defense games. Those are really the only types of games I play besides the occasional angry birds and homerun battle 3d. I played Robo defense on my wifes phone and it started lagging which doesn't happen on my older droid incredible.
I'm hoping maybe rooting fixes the lag problem on these type of games. Or maybe the new EE4(I think that's the name) update? Or maybe this phone just isn't that good for gaming? Either way this phone is still really good for most people, just being the tech nerd I am I want to make sure I am able to play these types of games for the next couple of years. They don't seem that graphically demanding, that's why I was surprised with the lag when playing robo defense on my wifes phone...What do you guys think? Should I hold out for something else? Thanks in advance for reading my longer then needed post, but what do you expect on a Friday night (alcohol cough* cough* )

If you root and install the app "Chainfire3d" games will run much better. Found this out today thanks to Tornlogic. I haven't tried it on my Charge yet, others have and said positive things. I tried it on my Droid 2 and it improved gaming. I'm getting a replacement charge due to a spot on the screen, once I get the new one I'll be rooting and installing this.
I've read a bit about this shooting game, it looks promising, it is Xperia Play Optimized and I didn't dislike Star Battalion, though I muted the sound as I didn't want to hear "Barrel roll! Do a barrel roll!" ever again... However, it's got a quite hefty price tag, so I would like to know opinions about it before forking out the 8 euro it costs.
I love this game. Its more like privateer and other space trading type games. The actual space fighting is pretty fun too once you get used to it. The problem is there is no slow down or speed up. There is a thruster boost you can trade for but as far as pulling fancy moves, its not really possible. But definitely a really enjoyable game! Way better than gameloft games.

Shame about the lack of speed control. Haven't even bothered buying a thruster yet though. Should have been the first game I bought instead of the gameloft tat..
I find this game incredibly laggy when there are a few ships on the screen.
The main actors voice is hilarious, though kudos to having proper voices rather than just text.
The game is ok, it's not as good as something equally as simple as Space Rangers on the PC.
Can get a bit repetitive and tedious going from system to system, but I do enjoy these types of games, it's just the basic dynamics of the warp mechanic that annoy me.
Is it worth the cash? Just.
Is it way to expensive when compared to other Android games...yes!
After beating Samurai II in the hardest level like a breeze, and after a similarly boringly easy experience with Asphalt 6, I would like to ask you people if you share that feeling, that the Play controls make the optimised games too easy to beat, since they allow much more precision than a touch screen, and those games were designed with touch screens in mind.

I think its the other way, that touchscreen games are too hard. The controls are just not intuitive, and in some cases downright maddening.
I agree. I have clocked Samurai II in its hardest setting in a about a week playing an hour to two each day. But my friend who has Samurai II on his LG Optimus 2x has been playing it for well over a month and he still cannot beat the final boss lol, even on the easiest setting (maybe he just sucks).
I also prefer using the gyroscope or w/e it uses to control the car on Ashphalt 6. Its way to easy to drive with the controls. Its alot more challenging without. I guess we are gonna be stuck with touch screen games being optimised for use with the controls.
I like the way how the pad allows me to win every game of rainbow six online.
Hell, wasn't the gamepad making things easier for you to win against others online even part of SE's marketing for the Play?
I'm still not used to the pads but I do love the buttons.
The controls far improve any game that I have also played on the touch screen. Controlling the game shouldn't be part of the challenge.

Exactly my feeling, and why I wasn't much of a phone gamer until this came out.

I found Asphault 6 impossible to complete and unlock all the cars because of the bullcrap requirements. Getting some of the required stars was damn near impossible, after a while i just gave up and Uninstalled the game out of sheer frustration.
Please tell me your joking? your complaining because we have a PROPER gamepad to play GAMES?! There was me thinking gamepads were how games were meant to be played, wow......
Also, Asphalt 6 is honestly the only racing game I play on the Play, I've tried many others but none of them make me want to go back and play again and again like Asphalt 6 does, it is also certainly a very good looking game!
Where have I complained, pray tell?

It was tough but definitely nowhere near impossible. I have all stars on most of the game, just took a conscious effort to do them. Usually its just making sure you give every turn a good drift and smash as many opponents as possible.
Well, I just can't get used to touchpads. I've NEVER played touchscreen games a lot (only one was Angry Birds on my old X8) and I find it much easier to play BC2 on screen than on touchpads. Movements are too fast, because the small touchpad is allocated to the whole screen.
I dont like the touchpad either, but I think the problem is the way they are programed to work. They do not really work like a joystick. Im used to playing shooters on my Xbox360
Most games I have played on the pad you have to move your finger back to the middle and slide to the edge of the joystick to move the camera that direction, rather than just pressing the edge of the pad like on the left pad when moving your character position.

Ah... that takes me back to the first time I tried to play an FPS on a touch-screen phone. It felt like using a PS2 controller made out of jell-o while submerged in molasses. The touch-pads are a godsend... when they are used right.
Every developer making a shooting game that requires any level of precision shouldn't be allowed to call their game "Xperia PLAY Optimized" until they've played Dead Space or the latest version of Brothers in Arms 2... and made the aiming work on that level.

Re: Gun Commando out now on Playstation Mobile!
I will be writing up my thoughts and adding them here later this morning. Trust me.....its good. Both the game and my review of it.
Sent from my R800x using xda premium
OK, here are some of my thoughts on this game. In the 90s I was in my teens. And have many fond memories of fragfests of Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Duke Nukem, Star Wars Dark Forces, and many others.
Now playing Gun Commando reminds me of many of these games. Graphically it reminiscent of the early FPS shooters in the mid 90s. But there are some 3D elements to it, if you see the video Legion showcased you will see that mostly in the vehicles it has a psuedo 3D effect which I must say is done very well.
Controls are too sensitive for me off the bat so I lowered it to three and it played very well, smooth and fast.
The story is pretty basic and generic, but lets face it unless your thinking Halo or any modern FPS the story is always just there to give you something. But then again its like an action movie. No one sees an action movie for the story, its the action.
So to narrow it down to Pros/Cons:
Cons (Just to get this out of the way first)
* Controls initally way too sensitive (lowered to 3 for me resolved this)
* Story is pretty basic, but we knew that
* Levels are a little too short ( I played to level 4 so perhaps they get bigger)
Pro's
* Really like the comic book style opening, done very well
* Found the dialog in the comic sequences to be funny at times
* Graphics are lush, vibrant and look great with the light 3D touch up
* Controls, once adjusted, were great
To add to this, I have been thus far greatly disappointed in the PSM. I found the payment system to be highway robbery. Paying $5 at a time is assinine in my opinion. And after about 2-3 weeks since its release, PSM, I removed the app entirely from my phone. But with the release of Gun Commando I reinstalled and bought the game. And I must add that I am glad I did. First game I have bought (Ive purchased 5 games prior to Gun Commando) where I didnt wish I could get a refund.
So if you like classic FPS, and want to add one more to the Xperia PLAY with short quick levels, for that get up and go... Gun Commando could be yours, for a small fee. So enjoy it as I do.
And thank you Legion for making the video, it was very well done and I felt showcased the game nicely.
Side note - In an attempt to locate the Playstation Mobile Reviews that BrianChase was mentioning I came across this YouTube channel, have not watched them yet so dont know how good the makers reviews are.

I just realized 12 hours after posting my thoughts... the sound. Yes... the sound in this game.... excellent in my opinion. Pretty standard fare but it plays nicely with the fast game. As stated you owe it to your self to pay the $3 and buy this game.....
On a side not... I played 4 levels just now.... and wow..... me gots a headache.. but in a good way. The comic scenes.. love all the wife jokes....funny.. BUY THIS GAME...
The soundtrack is surprisingly good for a mobile game, and the duke nukem esque quotes are good for a chuckle. This game is a definite buy, you are right about that!
