Hi All, doclenny here, I'm new to the site and have rooted an AT&T Aria Android. I was looking at the different roms and the one that I think I need is R008 to allow apps to sd function. My questions are: Is this an appropriate rom? Where and how do I download it? I've looked around the site and can't seem to find a space to download other signed.zip files other than the R012 with a link. I've already installed the R012 but this doesn't seem to allow for app to sd with the 2.1 version and I'd really like to maintain the rooted phone. Thanks In Advance for Your Help!

Thanks So Much, Will check this out. I've worked with computers since a 360k floppy was a large storage space. This phone has been somewhat of a challenge to me however. I do have one other question You may be able to answer. I'm currently working with linux-ubuntu tools to learn the use of the terminal window. I've attempted to use the terminal window to delete pre installed programs like peep and stocks but when I follow the process it says a read only file which I understand requires a permission change. when attempting to do that it tells me no such file or directory with the "chmod 0777 dwrxwrxwrx /?file name. Thanks again, It's greatly appreciated. doclenny!

Hi everyone,
I'm looking for some pointers on the path to 2.1 on my x10 Mini Pro, and hoping the wealth of knowledge between you all can set some things straight for me?
I'll apologise in advance if I ramble at all or don't make much sense... I've been browsing forums for hours and am suffering from mild cross-eyedness and slight brainfreeze.
The scenario;
I have an x10 mini pro, running 1.6, on Vodafone UK. Yes, the ONLY network that have not yet provided the 2.1 update for x10mp users. The phone was rooted with universal androot and also had astro file manager and titanium installed. For about three months I have had the 'starting download' hang problem in Market which I have not been able to fix. I hadn't really wasted much time on it as it was of little importance at the time however I now want to update some things and can't. Today I got annoyed and did a factory reset, hoping to resolve the problem. It didn't, and now I have a blank canvas of a phone.
I didn't back up before doing the reset as call logs and txts are of less importance that the files on my sd card, which remain untouched. I don't really have any other 'important' stuff on the phone right now.
I realised shortly after that I had a backup from December which I ran, as a last ditch attempt, this did not restore my lost applications, but did restore some user data. I noted that my root privileges and titanium were gone too
B*gger it, I thought, since I've lost all my data I may as well go for a generic NON-Vodafone installation of Android 2.1, and hopefully that will also fix the Market issue.
I've had a look on forums here and would like to run the 2.0.2.a.0.24 firmware posted by shivenjuneja.
I've downloaded this via pc, and understand I need to also install the flashtool and xrecovery, both of which I have downloaded and saved in a folder on my laptop.
Now remember, market was not an option so I've downloaded universal androot via pc too and have saved this to the root of the SD card.
With my primitive blank phone, I am unable to browse to it without a file manager, so now I need to download Astro File Manager again.
I decide to have a probably fruitless attempt of doing this via the market (because saving it on the SD card is pointless as I need it installed in order to browse to it!) and much to my amazement, it's worked!! Woohoo Market is working again! But hell, I've still lost everything on my phone so I'll perservere with my android update, thank you very much.
Ok, now while waiting for Astro to download, I remember that I've also read on the forum that the upgrade to 2.1 is likely to be stuck in a booting loop if I upgrade with user data on the phone. If I do a factory restore I will lose my file manager and root privileges that I will shortly be installing, right?
So now, at this hour, I'm wondering exactly what order I need to do everything in to get 2.1 on my phone.
To install 2.1 I need to install the flash tool and xrecovery. To install those I need root, to root I need Astro and before doing any of this I need a phone that has no user data on it.
D4mn you Vodafone.
Could anyone advise the best method to do all of the above i.e in what order to do it all, or point out if there is anything obvious I haven't accounted for.
I don't usually have a problem with this sort of thing, hopefully it will look clearer tomorrow!
Thanks in advance
K
Also, does registering your google login to use the Market count as 'user data' when you upgrade? I ask as I may need to download and install Astro again from the market, if it's still working after another reset?
A lot of view and no replies? I could really use your advice guys if anyone could oblige...
From further reading I understand that I need busybox to install xrecovery and that I also need to be on 2.1 054 as xrecovery won't install on 1.6?
Is this correct?
It sounded so simple initially to flash from 1.6 to the latest version of 2.1, whereas now I need this to install that, need to be on the later version to install the app I need to use to flash to the next version up, and have to have a bunch of other apps and tools installed in order to the able to run anything!
All I want is a rooted 2.1 with all the network and SE bundled crap removed, so I can start putting my phone back to how I bl00dy want it with the apps I choose!
I hate you Vodafone. IhateyouIhateyouIhaveyouIhateyou
hi all. new user to xda forums.
a brief history of my foray into the upgrade and root realm:
i have an samsung epic 4g. i just updated to froyo eb13 from eclair. i used the update.zip from samsung and everything went smooth without a hitch. ( i even backed up my SD card before the update to be sure i didn't lose anything on it in case i had to reformat it.)
i decided i wanted root to backup my phone so i went with the oneclick 2.5.5 procedure. i tried it on ubuntu 10.04 using the SDK but it didn't want to work. adb wasn't an issue so it was something else...i didn't bother researching why it didn't work on linux so i jumped on my windows xp sp3 machine where the root process worked without a hitch.
during the root process two apk files are removed:
/system/app/Asphalt5_DEMO_ANMP_Samsung_D700_Sprint_ML.apk
/system/app/FreeHDGameDemos.apk
so i'm on froyo eb13, i have root and everything seems ok.
i tried searching on the apk file names here on the forums but didn't see anything which really explained things for me.
questions i'm hoping someone can explain:
1. why are these files removed? is it because there isn't enough space?
(the only thing i could find was this thread but it doesn't pertain to the oneclick root process per se: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=882567.)
2. will these files be needed in the future for other 'updates'?
since my main goal was rooting to back up my phone completely including all the apk files, it seems the root process took out two before i could get them backed up. this isn't a problem as i can get the apk files from another source.
thanks in advance for any explanations.

part of the joy of rooting is getting rid of some of the annoying apps that come stock on most phones from your carrier.
A lot of roms when installed will place the removed apk's in afolder on your SD card called "removed apk's", you can navigate to that folder with file explorer and reinstall them if you want to.
That is assuming that your new ROM did that for you.

What ROM are you running?
After more playing around and using CWM 3x, it appears this is how those 'hacks' need to function in order to install busybox. Since there isn't enough space within /system/app, something must be removed. Those two apk files are removed which in turn allows busybox (later in the install process) to exist.
I've since installed SyndicateRom Frozen Takiya 1.1.0 which removed all sprint and samsung bloatware (apk files) etc. For the two apk files I've needed (myfiles and memo), I've pushed those back using SdxAppRemover-1.5. If I need anything relating to the sprint or samsung apk files in the future to upgrade, I'll need to Odin back to stock at this point.
I downloaded the netflix.apk that has been floating around, and with a few tweaks to my build.prop, I was able to get it to work on the galaxyXT ROM.
You have two choices, either download the attached build.prop file and stick in into your /system/ directory... or make the modifications yourself. FYI, please make a backup of the original build.prop before you mangle it.
I changed three lines in my build.prop. Just find these lines in your build.prop and change them to this:
ro.product.model=HTC Vision
ro.product.manufacturer=HTC
ro.build.fingerprint=tmobile/htc_vision/vision/vision:2.2.1/FRF91/277427:user/release-keys
Reboot, and that worked for me! If you have different experiences, please be sure to post them here.
FYI, If you make the changes yourself, make sure they are exact, case and everything. Use Notepad++.
Enjoy!
how/where do you access the /system/ directory? I looked on my SD card but cannot find.
thx

Not on your sd card.
It is in the /system/ Use Root Explorer or something like it.
It's in the phones internal memory, not on your sdcard. You would either need a file explorer with root access (e.g. Root Explorer) or you need to push it with adb.
tried using root explorer & it says the system files are read only...
Nevermind, clicked the R/W button & it allowed...
I'll try Netflix now after a reboot.
At the top of window while in root explorer you'll see a MOUNT R/W button, you need to toggle on read / write access.
Wow! Works Beautifully!
Wow! Works Beautifully! Thank YOU!
Work on Dexter's 1.3 too!
Sorry for the ignorance but what is it?
Streaming movie/TV service. Not everybody has it, but its a big deal for Android phones to FINALLY get it since iphone and Windows 7 phones have had it for a while.
I'm not sure, but there are several apk XDA of netflix, and other folders, I can not understand yet. Apk is installed, replace the buildprop and that would be enough? You may be able to give us the link to the apk please because in my market does not appear.
For the payment of subscription must be from the website or can be within the application?
The truth was unaware of this application, it looks very interesting. Thanks for sharing.
can someone share here the apk..tq

Thanks for posting that. I couldn't remember where in the forums I had found it.
Hey I'm running stock 2.1 rooted on the xt720. I swapped out the build.prop you supplied in the .zip and installed numerous versions of the netflix clients to see if any would work. The apps installed fine but when I tried to open them (every single one) just opened to a black screen, then it force closed with a bunch of Japanese lettering. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Unfortunately
"Latest version: 1.2.0 build 819145-1.2.0-102 (for Android version 2.2 and higher)"
I got Netflix installed and everything seems to work. But when I hit play, it starts to load and says that I don't have a Netflix ready device. I have Dexter Froyo v1.3 on XT720. Anyone have this problem?

once you install the apk, you need to do the hack rev explained in the 1st post.
New APK
Has anyone tried the new "stock" Netflix apk with the XT720?
I running the 1.20 APK, haven't seen an apk for the 1.21 yet, though I haven't gone looking yet either.
This is my first android and only my second smart phone. My first was iphone 3GS.
I've had the phone for just a few days now and I'm beginning to understand things but I still have a bunch of questions. I'm sure it's answered in a guide somewhere already but I'm having trouble understanding the lingo to understand the guide...
So this phone obviously doesn't have an SD card port. But does that mean there is no way to create a virtual SD card? Is there one already on the phone that I don't understand how to access it?
In apps that require other files stored on an SD card it often brings up a browser with the location /SD card/. Is this an actual folder location? How can I access it and how can I put files there?
I apologize in advance because I probably will not be able to understand your directions since I just don't understand android talk yet.
I have no idea what sort of info you guys might need so here it all is.
HTC One X
AT&T 4G LTE

Rooted using [ROOT] 1.85 One Click Root! - ACT NOW, MAY NOT LAST FOREVER! (I'm not sure how I did this or if I was supposed to. Just following instructions...)
I have no idea what a bootloader is, just that it can be unlocked. Should I do this? What does that mean?
I have a vague idea of what a rom is and i'm running the vanilla stock one. Any advice of what the advantages are of changing my rom and how to do it? Again I looked at the guides but I can't understand it...
I have no idea what a kernal is.

It has an internal sd card, you can access it with es file explorer, or any explorer app, but es is recommended. And when you plug your phone into pc it will pop up with the option to charge or mount as mass storage.

Welcome...I'd advise for you to head over to youtube and just search for any questions you might have. That way you get to see it. Even if it isn't for your phone alot of the same basic principles apply. ie. search youtube for android basics or something like that i'm sure you'll find a lot of info to get you started.

Welcome to the world of Android!
Our phone's file system is as follows:
2gb for Apps (in the /data location)
10gb for User Data (known as the "sdcard", in the /sdcard location, basically a virtual sd card)
4gb for system files and such.
Use any file explorer to acces the files in /sdcard. However, you can only edit the other "partitions" (as they are called, basically the other parts of the file system as described above) with root.
Root is basically giving you access to those other parts of the system so that you cant usually access so that you can modify your system
Bootloaders are the things that load the device firmware. If you unlock them, you can write custom things to boot the system up, such as custom recoveries (used to install custom ROMs, back your system up, etc) and custom kernels.
If for now you aren't going to use any custom ROMs then don't worry about Bootloader Unlock. If you want to use custom ROMs then you will need to unlock your bootloader and install a custom recovery.
Custom ROMs really come in two different types: ones that remove extra crap that AT&T/HTC install on there but are still very stock looking and give you a faster stock experience, and also those ROMs that completly deviate from stock and have an entirely different look and feel.
The second category of ROMs also can be broken up into two categories. One of them is AOSP (Android Open Source Project) ROMs that give you the vanilla look of what Ice Cream Sandwich is supposed to look like (look up screenshots of a Galaxy Nexus to see what it looks like). An example of ROMs like this are CM9 and AOKP. They both give you extremely high customizability. There are also ROMs that deviate from the standard type of different ROMs, such as the MIUI ROM. These give your phone a completely different look and feel like the AOSP Roms except they aren't trying to mimic AOSP. Check out screenshots of the MIUI ROM to see what I mean of a different ROM.
Ask any more questions you have.

Thank you Rohan and Kleeman.
So I'm gonna keep asking if you don't mind. It seems to me that if I were to keep the stock rom then I would not be getting all I could out of the device. I think cleanrom is for me, but would I be missing out on features by sticking with SenseUI? Could you point me in the direction of a very very very dumbed down way to unlock it, preferably device specific? Simple google searches brought guides but not one I could follow. Oh, and when should I backup and how?
hi every1.
(first thread - be kind )
i have a friend who just bought non brand android phone, looks like iphone from the outside, from china (i hate him for that lol)
it's running an android GB (2.3) with iphone theme (to match its outside looks)
i wanna upgrade the OS to ICS or JB.
although i'm a pretty 'techi' guy i don't have the slightest idea about ROMs \ Flashing \ cooking etc.
because it's non brand i couldn't find the proper place in the forum to ask this question.
the Android Dev and Hacking forum looks like it's not for noobs...
maybe General discussion > General ?
where can i ask this? in what part of the forum?
(haven't attached any link to the on-line store or uploaded any photo 'cause i'm not sure this is the place to ask the Q.)
thanks in advance for any help.

You can install apps that will root the phone. Everyone has different experiences I used Universal Androot and it worked perfectly but thats not to say that it wouldn't brick your device. Anyway once you root the phone the next step is to set up superuser permissions to allow apps superuser access to the linux kernel. After you install superuser app get Rom Manger and connect yourself to a wifi network. You can install clockworkmod through rom manager into your phone's recovery partition. Once that's done put a custom rom on the sd card as a .zip file. then install an app called terminal emulator. open the terminal and type "su"... click allow superuser... then type "reboot recovery"... the phone will switch off and come back on in clockworkmod... select the zip to install and enjoy! *I am not responsible if you brick it*

hi,
thanks so much for replying.
one small question: can you recommend one the custom roms?
i see too many roms and build numbers, will glad to get an educated suggestion or guess to whats generic enough
not to brick the phone.

It depends on the device. If you can find a CyanogenMod 7.2 port for it somewhere I would recommend that.
If u can find out details and the specs (chipset, etc) u maybe able to find another Chinese clone that's identical that has ROM development for it
Search for different apps that'll give u this info, also try generic rooting tools
