I know about the original thread but it's too long and about random stuff.
So i flashed via Odin to the KG4, it's fast and smooth but i would like to root it so i can (a) get my apps back with titanium and (b) have some fun. However, when doing the z-image and z-image root files with odin, the phone would show a boot screen and then come back, it would do it every minute or so. But this only happened while rooted. I was wondering if there is another way to root KG4?
Also can i use a regular backup app to restore my apps and data even though its in a titanium backup file?
I take no credit for this...
Thanks to corradokng for this method and to dsexton for finding original root zimage!!
For Root Follow Below:
THIS IS FOR ODIN
1. Flash This zimage-root-tar
2. Let Boot Loop Twice, you should see a fish.
3. Boot Back into Download Mode
4. Flash this. zImage-KG4.tar.md5
5. You should now have Root
6. Hit Thanks

there is no other way to root Gingerbread as of right now, you will have to wait for corra's deodexed build that you can flash via cwm which will probably come out today or tomorrow, so you can wait or do the zimageroot.tar method

You can odin a ROM that's gotten rooted so you can use quickreboot or adb to get into recovery mode, then you can use CWM from there if you had it installed already. I just had to flash an old rooted ROM to be able to get to recover my CWM backup.

Just flashed with no problem. Everything seems to work fine. I dont see much changes just some of the menu settings. Phone seems to run smooth. Gonna use it for a bit and let you guys know.
Thanksssssssssssssssss!!!
To going to download mode first you must open ODIN. Assume your phone is off. Then press and hold the volume + and - then plug the USB to your PC. You should see a BIG yellow triangle on the phone said Download mode. Hope this helps.
Keymapping is changed in GB. Not familiar with your phone nut on the original Vibrant GB bootloaders now require one volume key instead of two.
I am not responsible for brick phones. This method worked for me. If there is any confusion or something is not clear, ASK!
I see Kaik541 has a thread in Dev section for an ODIN version of KF1
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14782572&postcount=1
This is for those who want to flash and root from using the tar files.
I personally always remove my external memory and sim card before using odin. It is not needed as people will obviously post and neither is doing master clear. I do these steps just to make sure I eliminate any possible issues that can occur during flashing.
1) Download Firmware from http://www.samfirmware.com/WEBPROTECT-samsungusa.htm
2) Flash back to stock JF6 w/ odin one-click and did a master clear.
3) Flash Gingerbread KF1 using Odin (see image attached)
4) Flash fugu kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1010141 (I attached the zImage-root.tar to post if link does not work)
In the first post look for and select the download link in step 2: (credit to nikademus)
How to use:
1: Flash the stock rom
2: Download the image for Heimdall or for Odin
3: Flash it with either Odin or Heimdall
4: Boot once, it will install root and crash/shutdown (it is preferred to let the phone connected to usb so it does not loop boot)
5: Reflash the original kernel
5) Flash stock kernel (attached kernelKF1.7z) credit to lownox for helping me on that
6) Settings>Applications> enable Unknown Sources (AT&T finally got something right)
7) Install busybox from market
8) ENJOY!
thanks for the write up man

honestly, I think it's easier to just grab one of DrHonk's rooted kernels from the dev section and flash that via ODIN, and it also gets you CWM.
Just make sure you don't try to flash a gingerbread (2.3.x) kernel over a froyo (2.2.x) rom and vice versa
Can i do this running 2.2.1? Like updating from Froyo to this firmware, or do I have to update to something else first?
Dr Honk also has froyo kernels posted. Also you could try any of the great roms here as most of them are rooted. Just be sure to read the Noobs guide to flashing very carefully. In the Android developement section RaverX3X has posted the latest stock kernel + root + deodexed + debloat. Your best bet if you want stock.

If you just want root, you can use the latest SuperOneClick. If you want root/CWM/voodoo lagfix you can:
- Install drhonk's kj1 kernel via ODIN
- Install bhundven's KJ6 Heimdall One-Click
I suggest the latter as it's based on the KJ6 kernel & only needs Java to install.

The upshot to the CWM in bhundven's kernel is that it's CWM 5 which doesn't have the problem with mounting /system on GB ROMs. However, you can't restore your previous CWM backups with it, either.
Didnt work for me, just sticks on the fugomod screen.
OK before anyone blasts me yes I have researched for two days now and feel like I have been run in circles. I have searched XDA and Google to no avail and no I'm not a noob. I myself have a galaxy s2 skyrocket but recently got my wife the infuse and I'm starting to think that was a mistake. OK this is what I've found...
I type in Google how to install CWM recovery on the infuse and every thing I find says it must be rooted first.
Running Android 2.3.6 update thru Samsung kies....
So I type in how to root the infuse and what I find is if you want to root without flashing a new kernal you must have CWM to install a zip file from the SD.
Seems like one big circle. To root my skyrocket was easy as flashing a recovery image in Odin of CWM recovery and opening a super user zip file to root. 5 minutes easy as 1.2.3.
So my questions are..
1. Can I flash a recovery image tar of CWM to the infuse using Odin?
2. If so where can I download the tar file. I already have Odin 1.85 installed on my PC so I don't need that unless the tar comes in a one click.
3. If I can't how can I root and install CWM without flashing a custom kernel?
Please don't give links to nothing heimdel. The last time I used heimdel was with my captivate and I spent 3 days unbricking it.
4. Will the Motorola exploit added in super one click work with Samsung or harm the phone in anyway?
Thanks ahead of time for the help...

Check with jscott. He may know for certain.
Flashing kernel does not alter data.
I made several root via heimdall versions.
Instead of heimdall, basically, if you can Odin an insecure kernel, boot into cwm recovery, you can flash my cwm root package.
It also remove all bloats. Check my uclb3 root thread especially post #2
And as far as I know, on the infuse uclb3, you can't root without an insecure kernel flash in download mode.
Well it may cost a phone of I may soft brick it a few times but I'm gonna put my programming skills to the test and see if I cant come up with a one click root to 1. Make life easier for everyone and 2. To make it simple for the noobs to figure out. I'll let you know if my java VB and other languages I know can come up with something. It may take me a while and a lot of lost sleep hair pulling cursing and crying but I'm gonna give it my best effort.. wish me luck cause I'm gonna need it...

For now, the normal exploits used for a one click root option don't work on the stock UCLB3 Gingerbread kernel. As qkster has mentioned, you need an insecure kernel to root UCLB3. Also, there isn't an easy way yet to change the stock recovery to CWM without using a custom kernel zImage that includes it. Check out this HOW-TO that I wrote up for an explanation of what it takes to root UCLB3 Gingerbread. This explains how to temporarily use a custom kernel to achieve root, and also explains how to go back to the stock kernel. None of this removes existing data on the phone.:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1603220
If you don't want to do all of the work required to root UCLB3 on your phone, then you can use qkster's Heimdall one-click packages or my Odin packages that he showed you earlier.
you can root the infuse with super one click... easiest way to just root it, and also might i add, the infuse is very difficult to hard brick, soft bricks are easy to fix, with odin or hiemdall but i haven't yet heard or seen a case where the infuse is actually hard bricked, now installing cwm is easy as well, just youtube it, very simple and that there should get you on your way to flashing

Assuming that you are talking about going back to stock Froyo to root with SuperOneClick? As of yet, you can't reliably use SuperOneClick on the latest Gingerbread release. Sounds like the OP wants to directly root UCLB3 Gingerbread.

Now, you're talking.
Good luck.
You will need to look at some kernel work.
You may also need to look at the pit files in the unbrick package.
If you can, also look at boot sequences of the galaxy device. Adam Outler did some neat stuff with the galaxy devices.
I felt this warranted its own thread, and is pertinent to development. So here's to my first thread in the development section!
As you know, the Charge is getting an update to its Gingerbread stock ROM, titled FP5.
I was one of the lucky ones to get it early, so I pulled it out of cache and uploaded it to Dropbox.
So here it is:
http://db.tt/feigCZuH
If you want to try it:
You need to be fully stock before you can use this. This includes being on RFS. Then download, rename to update.zip, place on root of SD, and flash on the stock recovery.
To Root (assuming starting at stock FP5):
Download the CWM flashable root zip, found at http://androidsu.com/superuser/ (its rude of me to hotlink it). Download the whole package for ARM, not just binary (get 3.0.7-efghi-signed). Put it on your SD card.
NOTE: Most of us Charge users have found that SuperSU (Chainfire's replacement for Superuser) is much more stable on this device. I personally recommend SuperSU, but if you want to keep using superuser, it's your call. Installation instructions will be the same, just Google SuperSU and download the zip rather than Superuser.
Then, get the CWM recovery, and flash it via Odin. Uncheck "auto reboot". Unplug your device and boot to CWM, mount /system, then flash the SU zip (I would wipe cache and dalvik just to be safe).
Your device will boot and be rooted, however the CWM recovery will be overwritten. Get root explorer and search for "install-recovery.sh" (in /system/etc) Change permissions, delete, rename, or otherwise maim the script.
Finally, reflash CWM in Odin. Your device will boot and be rooted, with CWM Recovery, with in the stock FP5 ROM. Feel free to debloat to your pleasing.
You want a video tutorial? You're hard to please.

the introduction is VERY off sync. Please don't turn the volume up and scare the crap out of yourself. Sorry, I can't make it available on mobile, something about copyright infringement.
I'll be making an Odin next week, since a user requested it. Just have to wait until I get back from vacation... EDIT: Odins are already available. None from me.

I look forward to see how the Tweaked version of FP5 goes & if anything will be of use to dwitherell.
Thanks for posting FP5. :victory:

I felt this warranted its own thread, and is pertinent to development. So here's to my first thread in the development section!
As you know, the Charge is getting an update to its Gingerbread stock ROM, titled FP5.
I was one of the lucky ones to get it early, so I pulled it out of cache and uploaded it to Dropbox.
So here it is:

I have no idea of you need to rename it to update.zip or anything like that, so if someone smarter than me could advise, that would be helpful

Thank you so much for uploading this Kvswim! Hopefully the developers can use your update to make an update of their own like Tweaked! :good:

You do need to rename it to update.zip before you flash it with the stock recovery

Thank you sir, can't wait to try it on my charge when it comes back from samsung...unless they send me back a nexus
has anyone tried it yet? I'm assuming it will work on tweaked 2.x?
I tried to flash it via CWM (before realizing that I needed to rename it to "update.zip"), but got "installation aborted". I did revert back to RFS first though.... I guess I'll try it again...
You most likely have to be full stock to use it.

You have to be 100% stock FP1 stock recovery
OK, so first off thanks kvswim for getting this out there so fast
Secondly, I'm out and about for a wee bit, but once I'm back at my computer (mid next week) I'll get to work. I'm not sure how long it'll take, but I always assume it'll take a while.
I would also like to put out a request. The last update I did I went through and updated every theme in tweaktools along the way. That took a LONG time, so I was wondering if there were any interested in assisting the theme update process. This will obviously not be relevant until I have the base all finished up, but if you feel you have some of the necessary know-how and are interested feel free to PM me. Most of the themes were made by folks that no longer have the device, which is why I updated everything last time. If I get a few takers I'll make a thread to keep things all organized as far as who is doing what, that way proper credit can be given to those that lend a hand.
Also, no worries if there is no interest/time to help. I have no issue doing it, it'll just take a bit longer.
Carry on.
I can probably make an Odin of this next week if anyone wants it.
Also dwith, I can't help you at all with the themes, I would need to walk through it at least once first. Never taken apart a theme.

Does this include improved radios? Will there be new radios we could flash before Tweaked gets updated?
Yes, there are radio updates in this. However I can't pull radios only until next week, and even then I'll need someone to help me.

Cool. I have no problem with waiting. I edited the fingerprint line in build.prop so I won't be hassled by the update. My phone runs fine.
You can only dump the LTE radio, you won't be able to get a dump of the CDMA radio.

Is there a new kernel with FP5 & will you update your own kernel fork with it? I found out that http://opensource.samsung.com has FP5 as SCH-I510-VZW_GB_Opensource_Update2.zip available.
I've returned to stock and then taken the OTA and can't seem to keep my root or cwm recovery. sooo im going to have to edit my build prop until there is a root fix for this.

There's a certain file that checks if your recovery "needs" to be overwritten by stock, and all you need to do is change permissions on that file. For the life of me I can't remember what it is though.
I would imagine that would help you with your root too.
