[Q] Got S-OFF what next? - HTC Desire S

Hi,
I finaly got my Desire S S-OFF using the great tutorial for Alpharevx 1.2 in this forum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1162102
I followed the instruction and Bootloader now shows S-OFF
So what needs to be done next to get:
- root access
- install custom roms like saga lbc mod v0.5.4 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1048203
I am absolutly new to Android - Root - Custom ROMs etc.
So It would be cool if someone could write a small tutorial like the one for Alpharevx or tell me Link if this already exists.
Thanks everybody.

I am a noob too, but it's very straightforward. If you installed the Clockwork Recovery mod when S-offing with AlphaRevX then you are already rooted.
When you go into the bootloader, select recovery and make a backup of your current rom. Store this on your pc just to be safe.
Now look in the Development section of this Desire S forum and read the threads about the custom roms eg Saga LBC Mod, Virtuous Unity 1.29, or CyanogenMOD. Each thread describes what is in the rom, and usually how to install it. Most advise to do a full wipe first, then you just download the rom zip file to your sd card and install it via ClockworkMod Recovery:

after alpharevX
1.run gingerbreak , it will ask you to restart, do a restart(never pull out the battery during this step)
2.install 4ext recovery(link in my sig)
3.do a full nandroid backup using 4ext recovery
4.install the custom ROM you want
you can use this guide to install custom ROM

If you installed the Clockwork Recovery mod when S-offing with AlphaRevX then you are already rooted.

alpharevX only makes you s-off
you need to run gingerbreak & restart after that to gain root
or you can flash a prerooted ROM like LBC mod to gain root

Once S-off and rroted read the link foe noobs in my sigi.

Got Root now too by using Gingerbreak APK.
I installed Rom Manager and clockwordMod Recovery.
Within ROM Manager i selected backup. Device restarted in ClockworkMod Recovery. I then selected backup and the device is now backing up.
After this I can install my custom roms right?
One more question. What is a full wipe?

Backing up just backs things up, your going to need to delete the old rom before you flash a new one.
IMPORTANT. See sigi.

& if you are installing LBC mod install v0.5.3 first & apply v0.5.4 after that

OK. I got the ROM (saga lbc mod v0.5.3) successfully installed using the tutorial from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1176483
How do I apply the update 0.5.4?
The same why just without wiping?

Yes, that should do it

care should be taken when flashing radio, as this has potential to brick device.
As far as new radio goes, there is no harm to try with old radio and simply see how thing s go, if everything works and you're happy stay on the radio you are on, you'll see from peoples signatures that we're all on differing ones

As of the moment, revolutionary does not support the new hboot. The only way to s-off again is to downgrade.
Or you are able to unlock but will remain s-on by using htcdev site, which elk enable you to flash custom ROM and recovery but you must be aware that boot needs to flashed via fast boot

here you can see a procedure how to obtain superuser access to an S-ON mobile, and flash recovery and of course flash an unrooted custom ROM. I personally used the MIUI v1.11.11
I have a Desire S fully unlocked in the UK, looking to put android 2.3.7 on it. It has the latest version 2.3.5 on with hboot 2.00.002.
Has anyone achieved this yet?? If so how??
Thanks in advance!
Android 2.3.7 is available via CM7 or MIUI, not sense
Apologies but I don't really know what that means. I am wanting to remove all of the HTC software and run just android.
ok, I understand now, what I need to be able to do is S-OFF 2.00.0002?

You can gain full S-OFF on HBOOT 2.00.0002. You can unlock the bootloader at http://htcdev which will allow you to flash a custom recovery and install CM7.1 ROM which is based on GB 2.3.7.
Thanks very much
Should I follow these instructions??
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1314349&page=4
At which stage can I install CM7.1 ROM
Thanks for your help!
My s-on was taken down in a service by xtc clip. This is the simplest way...
Install through ROM Manager after all the steps?
better install 4ext recovery, how to is somewhere in this forum. Than you can convert your partitions to 4ext fs, what is suported by most of roms. 4ext works better for me. to manage your roms download 4ext updater from market.

Yes that is the procedure to follow. You can install CM 7.1 ROM after you have finished step 7, but I would go ahead and finish step 8 also. That will root your existing ROM so when you make a 'nandroid' backup before you flash CM 7.1, you will have a fully rooted backup of your system.

Sensation 4G ICS Rooting Guide Needed

Since im in ICS, 1- Which custom recovery should i install? (Regular or Touch)
2- which Root should i install Superuser or SuperSu?
3- is there a guide to accomplish this?
4- can any1 tell me or direct me or guide me or link me where to go to get this done?

Hi,
You should be OK to just install something like ARHD ROM
It contains root and recovery, which are installed when you flash the ROM...
On the [OP] is also a superwipe which will clean and prepare your phone for the new ROM.
Backup your stuff, place the superwipe and ROM on the root of your sd card and flash from recovery
Thanks for.your response but I'm really not interested in installing Custom Roms at the moment, just Stock Rom for now.
Can you please if u know or have any info on doing the.rooting and Custom Recovery by myself.

Easy enough ..find chainfires supersu thread and at the bottom download the attachment flash it..but before that..put your device in fast boot via USB..flash any recovery like say cwr(cwm) by typing fastboot flash recovery recoverynamehere.img then flash root file on your SD let me know if your confused

If you are SOff then either of the 2 methods should work.
Which recovery is that, CWM or 4EXT? Normal or Touch?

Revolutionary is an engineering (ENG) bootloader
Oh ok so ENG stands for Engeneering I thought it stranded for English, sorry but I'm still new to all this Android Terminology.
You know, someone should make a thread with all these android terminology and make it a Sticky.
Thanks for the info.
Btw, do you know since I got my Sm-Off back with GB and now I updated to ICS and I see that my bootloader says S-Off still, am I still good for Custom Recovery and Root?

HOLY CRAP! can this be any more confusing. I've been following this thread waiting for a final answer and still nothing. If anyone gets this done, please do a step by step for those of us not willing to blaze new ground here.
I know there are tons of us in the same boat. Upgraded to ICS stock and wanting to keep the ROM, just open ourselves up to CWM flashing options and root required apps.
Based on what the original poster is going through here, most of us do not want to chase down link after link.
I'll keep watching hoping for a final answer. Make the last post a link to the STEP by STEP.
Thanks all for your patience.
Look, you basically need a bootloader that says *unlocked*, *revolutionary* & *juopunutbear*.
If you are S Off but locked, flash an ENG Hboot.
If you are S On & locked, unlock using HTC Dev or S Off using JB.
Now, after this, flash 4EXT recovery & then root the device.
If your Hboot version is less than 1.27 flash firmware.
I'm assuming you are already on stock, so you have a stock rooted rom with custom recovery.
All of these can be done using my tool.
That's about as much I can help you with.
Also, when you talk about being new, look at when I've joined & when you'll have.
I got my first android phone a month ago & I'm on XDA since less than 3 weeks!
(No offence meant, but please try searching)

ok i just downloaded your tool from your the link under your signature and is version 6.4.2 and i think i remeber you or someone else suggesting that i needed to install the ENG option which is option 10 but then your tools says that option 10 in intended for devices who have been S-Off using the JB S-Off (juopunutbear or something, the wire trick thingy). so mine as you can see in the first post im S-Off but im still remained Locked from upgrading from 2.3.4 to 4.0.3 but i have never used the JB method, sooooo does option 10 applies to me or NOT?
how do i get the ***LOCKED*** to say something else? do i need a different bootloader or a different hboot or a different recovery or what?
what do i need to get: have in mind that im gonna try using your tool
***LOCKED*** into something else?
Custom Recovery?
Root? SuperSU or Superuser?
etc and everything else needed to have full control of my phone?
also can you tell me with your tool in order to understand you better what would be the steps i have to follow in order to achieve all this? for example: step 1 for S-off, then step 3 for custom rec. ext4, then step 4 root device, etc, etc you know what i mean just for me to follow up without screwing up my device, since im gonna follow ur instructions to the letter.
if you need more info on my device all you need is on my first post
thanks man i would really appreciate it

Too many questions, seems you're confused.
Please head to IRC & find me there. SigPic (REALTIME IRC) has link.
EDIT: To briefly explain, it doesn't matter Revolutionary S Off or Juopunut Bear S Off.
The ENG Hboot is compatible with both.
After this, you can choose to install custom recovery if you want to or, just root right away.
It is always advisable to have custom recovery installed.

questions about unlocking

Hi, I have my Desire S totally with the stock system. So S-On, bootloader locked and oficial rom 2.3.5 branded from Vodafone Spain. Finally I decided to unlock my desire S and to change the rom, etc. After reading a lot, the following are the steps i want to do for that.
Before all I would like to back up my apps, sms etc, contacts are in google so i dont worry about them.. ¿How could I do it with my stock desire S?
Once i have the back up I will perform these steps:
1.- First to downgrade de Hboot ( mine is 2.00.0002 locked) following this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1399331 or this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1443636
I read that this method has benefits over to unlock by htcdev when you want to fash custom roms, and you dont lose the warranty.
In this step what rom should I use to downgrade if my phone is vodafone Spain branded with rom version 2.10.161.3? maybe this RUU_Saga_Vodafone_UK_1.32.161.1_Radio_20.28b.30.0805U_38.03.02.15_?
2.- Once I have the old Hboot 0.98.00000, unlock it and s-off with revolutionary http://revolutionary.io/
3.- Root with this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1296916 or this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
4.- Install 4 EXT recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1377745
5.- and finally choose a rom, maybe MIUI, and flash it.
Any suggestion/correction or advice?
Thanks!

I was able to root my phone with S-On
now it has an unlocked root using HTCDEV Unlock | S-ON | HBOOT 2.00.0002 | 4EXT Recovery v2.2.7 RC5
Note on the HTC dev website you have to Select the bottom option 'all other supported models' from the htc dev unlock root website
as desire S is not listed
then I downloaded a fantastic operating system ( rom) called virtuous Saga which has Sense version 3.6 and android 4.04.
( also via this forum - more thanks to mdeejay - again unable to thanks you on the forum yet)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1669497
I did not flash the firmware because I have no idea what that means and it sounded potentially hazardous and I read somewhere you cannot do it with S-ON ( whatever that actually means) - I only installed the saga ROM which works fine with nothing faulty that I have so far tested
I just installed the virtuous saga zip on my sd card, installed it from the recovery screen and then had to flash the boot.img from the zip file using flashboot from my PC
Result - Bluetooth works and my phone has lots of nice updated features also Bluetooth keyboard works perfectly now with this (Again not sure if it makes a difference but this keyboard works using a bluetooth mode called spp rather than HID) And I still have the lovely clock and weather widget - in fact it does not look much different to my old android version - just faster and smoother.
If you try this make sure that your Google account is synced and all contacts are backed up . I also used BookmarksSB to back up bookmarks, Astro to back up all my applications to the sd card, and SMS back up & restore to back up all my sms messages. all free in the Google market.
I also took my sd card out when following the steps to format and clear caches in recovery mode because I did not want to accidentally wipe my SD card.!!
hope this helps

Your goal is to change the rom and backup your phone's current state. Right? You can follow these simple steps:
a. Unlock bootloader by http://htcdev.com/bootloader/
b. Flash custom recovery (4EXT)
c. Backup your phone by using recovery
d. Install new rom, dont forget to flash boot.img separately (because of your phone was unlocked by htcdev.com)
e. [Optional] Root if need
The steps you're going to take are right. You should write down what RUU you have now in case you want to go back.
It looks like you know enough about rooting and flashing and the alpharev way is the best. Via HTCdev you can't install ICS if I am correct.
Good luck and welcome to the world of rooting!

No, there is no "normal" way to keep your apps and their data.
You can gain temp-root and manually zip+copy the /data/ directory (to retain permissions), I suppose. But I don't think it's something you're able to do. And restoring data from it would be quite some pain, too, and require fixing permissions as far as I remember.

No way. You should s-off OR unlock bootloader first.
If you dont want to use htcdev.com to unlock bootloader, you can downgrade hboot and then s-off. Search in the "Desire S General" box, there are 3-4 thread about hboot downgrading and s-off.
Ok so I will do it without back up of apps. Just need to know wich rom to use to downgrade...
Thanks to all!
You could back up the apps without the data using go launcher backup.

Without the data means only the apk, right? So the file to install it that most of them are already in the play store. If it is like that, it has not many advantages, but thank you anyway.

[Q] Can i root?

I've looked all over the forums, but i can't find an answer, could someone tell me if i can root my phone using SuperOneClick?
Here's what it says when i boot into bootloader:

eMMC-boot
I would like to install cyanogen mod, and i'm on t-mobile uk if that helps

It was originally like that, haven't done anything to it
Your HBOOT says that your phone is S-OFF, which means you have full access to it.
On the other hand, not knowing your OS version, I'm not sure you can root using SuperOneClick - since it only works for Gingerbread.
Since you have S-OFF, just go and find "root for S-OFF users" thread in Development and do what is written there.
Download a rooted custom rom (usually a custom rom is rooted) then flash via recovery. You'll have your DS rooted.

Since your DS is already S-OFF you don't need SuperOneClick. You can root by flashing SuperSu from a custom recovery. You may already have a custom recovery installed by the person who S-OFFed your phone. If not it won't be too difficult to install a custom recovery. I recommend you 4EXT touch. You should also make a nandroid backup from the recovery of your current ROM before attempting to flash an alternate one. Titanium backup is also very useful in order to be able to restore your apps and their data after flashing a ROM. The pro version in worth the money.

Doesn't SuperSu require a rooted device? and i think 4ext also requires root access.

4EXT is a Recovery - has nothing to do with being rooted or not rooted

Judging by your answer, I strongly advise you to stay away from rooting your phone, and reading a lot instead.

One you've comprehended and then followed the advice given in the two posts above
Install a recovery and then use it to install a custom pre-rooted ROM. You'll find links in the INDEX thread along with guides, which should be read, see the link in my signature.
Did you buy you're device new?

Since your phone is S-OFF, you can flash a recovery with fastboot from your PC. It may not be necessary if a custom recovery has already been flashed to your phone. Check your recovery before proceeding to flash a custom one.
Once you have a custom recovery installed, your can flash SuperSu from this recovery to your ROM. You'll then have rooted your current ROM and will be able to make backups before trying to flash alternate ROMs. At minimum you should make a nandroid backup from the recovery ; it will allow you to come back to your current ROM in case your not satisfied with the alternate ROMs.
But take your time and read the stickies in order to be sure you understand what you are doing before proceeding further.

Rare, but I seem to remember over a year ago when we all had to use an XTC-Clip that some people got their phones already S-Off.

Not necessarily at all. Regular bootloaders, even when S-OFF, don't allow fastboot commands. If you try executing it on phone that was S-OFF-ed with XTC-Clip, for example, it'll fail.
For that the bootloader has to be re-engineered (or engineering bootloader flashed).
why exactly do u want to root your phone? do u want to flash a custom rom or do u want root access for the heck of it?
if u want to flash a custom rom then i suggest you go through this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1850574
it has links to some other threads.. finally please do make a backup of your original rom in case u dont like the custom rom

In his case, he got his phone S-OFF with a re engineered bootloader (2.00.2002). I find it strange that a stock phone comes pre installed with a ENG bootloader...

I hadn't looked at the hBoot version. Maybe his idea of 'New' and the shop's idea of 'New' are somewhat different - possibly a returned product that they hadn't checked properly before reselling.

[Q] HTC Sensation XE Root help

I am having a similar problem to this post i have found but it doesn't fully answer what i need to do.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1965792
I have s-on still but dont understand how to change the recovery from clockworkmod to 4ext. I assume this is what i need to do so i can use custom roms as i already have super user and clockworkmod installed but can't write or remove a rom. (If there is another way where i don't have to change recovery this would be great)
I made a post on reddit too which may explain it better and shows links to guides where i have found some info.

Sorry if i have asked an already answered questions but i can't seem to find it.

AFAIK you need S-Off if you're using CWM. Download 4EXT Recovery Updater from 4ext.net and install it. It will flash you 4ext Recovery without having S-Off (4ext Smart Flash), so you can flash every rom you want.
Thanks for both replies.
If i follow that guide to install 4ext do i need to manually remove clockworkmod first or will it overwrite that?
I take it after installing that i will need to follow the rest of the guide and then http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1614617 with a paperclip to gain s-off? After doing this i assume i should be able to install a custom rom?
Is this the best method or is it easy to just put on 4ext and install roms with s-on?
Sorry if this is a noob question but it seems a bit different to me as i have only rooted a htc desire and one x before and never had to use a paperclip lol.

Hi,
The link I gave you ,will help you install 4EXT,which will overwrite CWM.
If you read the whole guide, you will see, that once you have 4EXT recovery, you do not actually need to s-off.
You can install any custom ROMS which match your firmware.
What does your bootloader say?

Hi,
With a 1.27 hboot,you should have 3.32 or 3.33 firmware.
You should be able to install any of the current crop of ICS or JB ROMS.
