Hi all, I am new to android having just gotten a Desire S. I was trying out Go Launcher EX which I liked a lot, until I realised that there are no toggle widgets for things like wifi, mobile data or gps. From what I have read, only Launcher Pro Plus has some of these widgets, is that correct? Is there any other free launcher which will give me these toggles the same way HTC Sense does? I don't mind paying in principle, but in the future I may want to use a custom rom. Thanks!
I use Beautiful Widgets. It costs a bit, but it's worth it since you get many toggle widgets (WiFI, GPS, Airplane mode etc.) and a nice clock+weather widget with lots of customization possibilites.

If you want a free app with only toggle widgets, you can use for example Toggle Widgets Pack

Thanks very much! Would you know if the Toggle Widgets Pack would work with a launcher like Go Launcher EX?

Yes it does. But I just noticed that Toggle Widgets Pack doesn't have a switch for mobile data. Here's a better alternative:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.jim2&feature=search_result
Has many more options and much more configurable
Get Quick Settings so you won't have to get a new launcher and waste space with widgets. All you have to do is hold the search key to bring up a window with the settings you need.
Thanks very much to you both, I will try both ways and see which I prefer. Thanks again!
I'd throw in another one: Elixir, not only switches but lots of other useful stuff too
+1 for Widgetsoid.

ADW.Launcher. Open source home replacement app. Features: Customizable desktop previews, Customizable application drawer (old one or iphone/galaxy one), Customizable drag drop action buttons, Unveil the Dockbar flicking-up the app-drawer button and drop another 6 shortcuts/folders/apps! Check the site for more information or meet me on xda! (For Android version 2.0 and higher)
Laucher pro Features:
LauncherPro Android App in a home screen replacement app that is a fork from the stock launcher from Android 2.1 (Eclair). By default you have 3 home screens which is configurable to up to 7 in the Settings menu. Along the lower section are convenient icons with quick links to Phone, Contacts, Android Apps Launcher Drawer, Messaging, and Browser apps. The latest release added numbered notification icons for new text messages, missed calls and new emails. When you open the Android Apps launcher drawer, apps are presented similar to Android 2.1 launcher only difference is the cool 3D roll effect is missing however LauncherPro features a faster and much smoother scroll… convenient when you have a lot of apps like myself!
Which one do you like?
ADW for me, works flawlessly.
i just used the ADW and so far so good
LauncherPro Plus. Resizable widgets and all the settings that really matter, including the scrollable dock bar...pure smooth awesomeness.
LauncherPro. I love the customizable dock with built-in notification counters.
ADW.. open source. customizable look, customizable dock, hidden dock, customizable widget sizes, it's fast and it's free :]

To any user who likes a phone to be used as intended:
-zero redraws
-zero memory hogging widgets/usage...
-fluid/fast responsiveness
ADW is the only choice period.
I've used Launcher Pro Plus (bought and paid)
and love the widgets he has created...
However when using the:
-people
-twitter
-sms
-calendar widgets
(in addition to)
weather widget donate
music widget
pandora widget
google search widget
power setting widget
Launcher Pro Plus will inevitably bring my phone's memory to
35MB, and well, you know the rest.
ADW is the best, most stable launcher.
Launcher Pro Plus... for me.. takes all the good widgets out of Sense..
By far the best IMHO
ADW for me too.
Love ADW...looks great and works like a charm for me.

LauncherPro is the clear winner, at least on older devices such as my HTC Hero.
ADW's performance is remarkably poor on my phone, while LauncherPro is completely smooth. Having said that, I don't use too many fancy widgets.
It is a shame LauncherPro isn't open source though. I wish it was.

What's the big deal of open source? Why is it a shame? I seriously don't get it.
ADW is deffinently more stable on my HTC Incredible BUT I lopve the customization that i get with LP....When I want my phone to be fast I use ADW...When I want my phone to be sleek and nice looking to show off my phone to my friends I use LP.

1) Open Source means (if you've got the dev chops) you can easily get at the code and work it to how you like.
2) There's substantial savings with buying open source...
Previously, I am big supporter of ADW.Launcher.
Now I am big big supporter of LauncherPro Plus.
LauncherPro Plus is much much rock than ADW.Launcher especially on speed, user friendly, stability and customization.
LauncherPro Plus even though I don't use the widgets.
Launcher Pro Plus
I do use the People, Messaging, and Twitter widget. being able to resize any widget is a huge benefit.
The additional row on the home screens is a big plus to me too.
I found that most of my memory based issues were resolved by setting it to the low memory profile. No real loss of function and no more force closing.
I find ADW a lot limited compared to LP, ok its grand if you want a fast phone they say use ADW, but why not reduce the widgets/look of LP, it is the more customizable launcher, hence why I find it better
LP+... seems smoother and simpler
The Faster Than Light Launcher
Make no mistake, this is the fastest launcher you'll ever run. Small, light, configurable. The Gingerbread launcher as it should have been. No useless stuff, no compromises. Performance and usability are the driving forces here.
On version 3.0, most of the limitations on the Lite versions 2.x.x were removed. 3.0 Lite users have almost the full 2.x.x Pro specifications. 3.0 Pro users have a all new game to play now: The Pro version can use existing ADW, GoLauncher and LauncherPro Icon and Dock themes, giving FTL and unprecedented array of possible theming. You can even mix Dock and Icon themes from different launchers. Google Play is yours for the take.
The Lite version still has some of the configurable options pre-loaded that cannot be changed. A lot more stuff is configurable on the full version, check the Pro Version Extras feature list below. Performance or user experience are in no way impaired on the Lite version.
Important: FTL supports all resolutions and ICS, but only 800x480, 854x480, 960x540 and 480x320 devices have 3D drawer enabled! Also ICS has no 3D drawer because it does not contain the "old" opengl interface. But as it is natively accelerated anyway, 2D drawer should be very fast.
Lite Version Features:
- Tweaked for extreme speed and smoothness
- Fully accelerated 3D Waterfall app drawer
- Option to use "normal" 2D app drawer
- Choice between 3 and 5 icon Dock
- Configurable Support for launcher auto-rotation
- Configurable Infinite looping of homescreens
- Configurable support for scrollable widgets
- Configurable number of homescreens: from 1 to 9
- Configurable bounce effect on homescreen transitions
- Configurable wallpaper scrolling
- Configurable transition speed of homescreens
- Configurable default homescreen
- Configurable "swipe up" to one of the following:
*show homescreen previews
*open app drawer
*hide status bar
*show and hide status bar
*open and close dock bar
- Configurable Homescreen grid: From 4 to 6 rows
Pro Version Extras:
- Theming support: The Pro version can use existing ADW, GoLauncher and LauncherPro Icon and Dock themes, giving FTL and unprecedented array of possible theming.
- Configurable support for resizeable widgets: only when adding them to the homescreen, you cannot edit them later.
- Configurable Homescreen grid: From 4 to 6 rows, and 4 to 6 columns
- Configurable Dock icons size
- Configurable "swipe down" and "swipe down" independently to any of the following:
*show homescreen previews
*open app drawer
*hide status bar
*show and hide status bar
*open and close dock bar
- Includes anim speed: precise control over core Android windows/transition animation speed
Basic Instructions:
- On first boot, homescreens will be empty. Long-press anywhere and start adding stuff!
- You can add/change the shortcuts on the dock bar: Long-press the place you want, and wait for the a popup to show, allowing you to choose what activity you want there.
- You can uninstall apps directly from the homescreen: long press the shortcut (even in the app drawer), drag it to the trash can that appears where the dock was. If you drop it immediately FTL will only remove the shortcut, but if you wait a bit before droping, FTL will offer to uninstall the app.

Sorry mate,
Currently it is for HDPI devices, 480x800 screens. It should be filtered by the market, I'll check it out.
But I'll try to add MDPI support in the future! Thanks for the heads up!
Cheers

The permissions are the standard one from the stock launcher, plus the WRITE_SETTINGS for configurations.
Those you are asking about is to be able to add contact shortcuts to the homescreens and calling from there.
Cheer!
lowveld thanks for developing this for us
don't mean to put you down, but i think there will be countless requests about new features and AFAIK merging new features might bring the speen down... so it'll be a hard way to develop a new launcher (given that there are many counterparts in market)

Don't worry mate:
No compromises!
I will not add stuff that brings performance down, nor will I turn this on some GoLauncher clone or such.
This is my personal vision of what a launcher should be like. Of course there's still some stuff missing that I really want to get working.
Cheers

Because of that you have the possibility to call numbers and read personal contacts. For me those are necessary functions
@lowveld: great work, but for me it's useless without widgets. What about calendar, weather, messages, email? I know everyone is telling you what's still missing, and I don't want you to implement this right now. But did you even thought about any widgets?

Ok guys,
This can be hard, specially when you're used to Sense, but FTL, or any other non-sense launcher, does not support Sense widgets.
So you can only use standard android widgets with this. Anything out of the market, not written specifically for a given launcher (hint, go Launcher widgets) will work.
Personally, I use Android Pro Widgets for contacts, calendar, facebook and etc, check it out, it's really good. Also, FTL supports native widget scrolling, which makes APW even better!
Cheers

Good evening/morning! (depending on your location )
May I ask a quick question?
I want to switch back to GO Launcher, but I really can't live without HTC's:
-Calendar widget
-Music widget (with lockscreen widget)
-Profile toggle and wifi toggle widgets.
Can somebody direct me to cheap or free alternatives on the Android market that can replace these HTC widgets, so that I can switch to GO Launcher?
I'd be very grateful for any help. Thanks so much

Hi,
1.Gemini calendar
2.Player Pro
3.Elixir
Im wanting to edit my lockscreen kind of like we already edit our homescreen. In particular im looking to get my agenda and a snapshot of the weather on the lockscreen. Is this possible? If so how, oh and im not looking to use a launcher as i like the layout and feel of touch wiz. Thanks
You can't without root. Some manufacturers (e.g. HTC) will have weather info etc. on their lock screens natively, but Samsung doesn't unfortunately.
Well thats stupid! Okay option two/three. Any good lockscreen apps that replace existing lockscreen that dont lag? Or any launchers that sill allow me to keep my own theme and app style and layout but allow me to customize the lockscreen?

I don't know of any lock screen apps off the top of my head because I never use any, but I know they're on the Play Store, so just do a search and see which one would probably fit your needs. Also, the launcher and lock screen are two different things, so installing a custom launcher just affects the home screen and app drawer.

I always used AcDisplay on my past android phones. I haven't set it up on my S7, so I don't honestly recall all the features, but I always liked it so that's a good place to start.
May just be for notifications but I really can't remember.
Try hi locker it uses the fingerprint scanner has good media and notifications has calendar and weather as well
I really like the Date and weather widget that comes stock in the Google Launcher on the phone. However, I've switched to using Nova Launcher because I like a couple of its features better. Is there any way I can get that widget on my homescreen?
Thanks!

Yes, it is built into the Nova settings. No need to download additional widgets. Just look for the Google search bar options and select the pixel style and enable weather display.
i would love to find the built in digital clock/date widget, i cannot find it in nova launcher, could you tell me how? i don't need the weather as a widget, just the time
