To install a custom ROM you must be rooted...
Check the forums for a development section of your phone to properly root. Or try Google. Google is your best friend.

Dude, the Gingerbreak thread states: "This specific exploit may work on various Froyo and Honeycomb versions as well." Also http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1049944 is specifically for your phone, even with Froyo...

Hi everybody i'm an happy owner of samsung gt i5800 /galaxy mini / galaxy 3.whatever
my phone is 100% clean like just bought so android v 2.1
i would like to upgrade it to froyo and put a new rom on it but i'm a bit nub about phones, i tryied to root it with several programs but didn' worked, can somebody kindly explain me what should i do and wich rom should i put on when i will able to root it?
thanks in afford
buddy.....u can root it using SUPERONECLICK ... but since you are on eclair(2.1) i wud suggest you root it wid Z4ROOT application which is available on the market or you can also download the apk from internet...Z4ROOT works nicely on 2.1 and after you have rooted your phone ...u can upgrade it to froyo by flashin 2.2 firmwares from herehttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125387 and this should help you but since you are new to this i wud suggest you to find a tutorial on youtube before flashin ..... hope this helps
Flashing doesn't require root. Just put your phone in download mode, connect it to your PC(with your drivers installed so your phone can be detected), launch Odin, tick 1 package, choose your rom thru one package and start flashing. Just follow instructions and it will be fine. All roms are prerooted. Check the features. Some are gingerbread, some are froyo.

Download any 2.2 custom or stock firmware.
Go to download mode. Flash it.
No need to root. Every custom rom is pre-rooted.
If it is stock rom, use superoneclick, assuming it is froyo 2.2
