Hey guys - I know this has been asked before, but I've been unable to find a decent answer:
Is there any Lynx-like browser for Android? I don't mind if it runs in the terminal or whatever, but I reckon it would do my limited data quota a massive favour.

why don't you just disable the downloading of images?

Have you tried Opera Mini? If you are worried about your data usage, I think you'll love its server-side compression technology. Well, depending in what are your feelings about your browsing privacy.
I know I can disable images, and yes, I tried a couple of browsers with server-side compression, but I was really hoping for the plain simplicity of a Lynx-like app. Thanks for the replies so far!

i second this
lynx it's so cool for reading some heavy news websites that i ssh to home and use lynx from there
Hm, SSH to your home pc eh? Tell me more.

The other thing you might consider is RSS. I read a lot of websites like this. Most major news websites now support RSS. Good luck. Lynx is hard to read and manage as it was designed for an earlier implementation of the web.
I wonder if it isn't easy to do since 1) it's all open source and 2) it should be a textbook JNI port...

There are some instructions here, in chinese. If anyone does get a working binary, let us know;
http://www.embedu.org/Column/Column294.htm
Update: I followed the instructions, and it works. Here are the results:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16050683
I read through the instructions... Very nice and detailed directions there! However, they're not even using the NDK, they're compiling an ARM executable for Lynx (so if we go that route, the result would be a binary that has to be run from terminal emulator).
Food for thought...
Binary compiled successfully!
Done it!
I just followed the instruction from the chinese professor, and it works fine for me. I have created a tread for it at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16050683
The zip file is there, along with the instructions. Enjoy!

TextOnly browser for android which displays only content from the article by stripping ads, scripts and images

There was something i used to do when i was browsing using an old Nokia dumbphone that might help.
Type the following into your address bar:
http://www.google.com/xhtml
Now search for the site you want to visit, i.e xda-developers, and click on the link. You should now be seeing it in a low data format. It's not pretty but it works pretty well on a mobile browser.
If you want you can then bookmark the site as it is, so that it will still have that formatting when you return to it next. Obviously, for every site you want to visit you have to go through the above, but if you also bookmark the xhtml version of google you can always start your browsing session from there and just bookmark all your reformatted favourites as you go.
For that mobile view you can just use the "mobile view (GWT)" option in Dolphin Browser HD

Little Web Browser is pretty similar to Lynx. Free, but a HUGE fee if you want to get rid of the ads.
It is amazing how you'll always have at least one idiot in almost every forum who has no clue to what the correct answer might be but instead of shutting his ugly mug he tries to be a smart-ass and suggest a retarded "solution" that the OP had already discarded even before he asked. "Eh, why don't you disable images on Opera? (monkey squeaks)" ... well no ****tard, that's not a solution not even a proper answer to the question.
Ive done a search and have failed to find help in other threads so here goes.
I recently upgraded to the sensation and i love it. One problem though, some of the sites i visit load up the mobile version of the sites even when mobile view is unticked. I figured this issue would be solved when i flash a new rom. So i have flashed Insertcoin, but despite there being an added option in the browser to alter the user string i still have the same issue. Is there any way round this?
probably the site reading what os/browser you are using
With opera on my old hd2 you could change what the browser presents itself as, might be worth looking to see if the android version can do the sam, or maybe Dolphin browser.
on the stock browser type in "about:debug" then go into the browser settings. I think there's an option. But will reset if you reboot your phone.

what the op is saying is that even with some of these ROMs, there is an option in the browser to change the UI string to desktop, BUT some websites still show the mobile version. Hopefully someone can get a fix for this
Yeah, what piimp says is correct. I've tried the above suggestions bet they don't start to work. And the custom roms I have used have an option in the browser to change the user string, but the mobile sites still show!

and it works.

This doesn't appear to work either.

You´re right. e.g. Paddy Power - never heart before - only opens android-mobile site with these settings. Changing UA settings to Desktop open iphones-site. Worthwile to see what´s submitted by one´s phone. I´ll keep an eye on this.

The easiest would be to create an app that has a web view that points to your site. This would be the same as navigating to the site from a browser except you would have a icon in the app drawer.

Take a look at the link below. This is assuming you know how to create a basic Android app.
http://developer.android.com/guide/webapps/webview.html
You can also use one of those websites that create a mobile app around a website. You might want to try those, for example:

2 Added Options
I've bookmarked 2 links. But, I'm not allowed to share the links as I'm new here.
But, lemme help you out.
Google these two titles:
"Best Places to Turn Your Website Into an App for Android and iPhone" - All in one option
"Convert Your Website into iPhone and Android Mobile Apps Space-O" - Customized option
The first one is an article by Matt Mansfield and the second is a service page by Space-O Technologies.
Check which one suits your requirements.
So, I've tried to access a few youtube videos as well as few websites that don't allow access to the videos on mobile devices (as well as some garbage pages that have poorly designed mobile sites). I was wondering if anyone knows of an app that will mask that the device you're using is a mobile device so you can access official websites rather than mobile optimized devices. I'm not sure where else to post so this seemed as good a place as any other. Let me know when you get the chance. Thanks, guys!

Dear Developers and members...
Facebook (App) for Android has removed all options to download videos..
Please tell me any working method to directly download video from facebook official application to

Hey there! Dude, if you wanted to download videos from facebook without using third party app, try using the site "fbdown". Try search it in google. I haven't tried it personally though, but it was recommended to me by my friend.
It was purposely for the desktop though but I think you could still do the process with a smartphone by using the "desktop site" of facebook in chrome. Just type it in the chrome browser (or any browser of your choice) in your smartphone and log in. Then find the video. There's a part in the site "fbdown" that gives you the procedures on how to download using the said site.
Ps. I don't know if this will work on smartphones because I haven't tested it for myself yet.
Ps. I am still a newbie at XDA so I can't show you the link here. Sorry for the inconvenience dude.
I hope it works for you.
Wish you luck dude.
Hope I helped ^_^

Thanks dude for reply.
I have already mentioned that the method should be of kind in which you don't have to use any other third party app or browser.
The method you have described is contrary to my query. I can tell you more convenient ways to download from FB other than you have described like UC Browser etc. which is having own built-in down-loader and whenever you play any video from UC browser from facebook or other websites even youtube, it display Download Icon. So thanks for your help, but it does not solve my problem.
I want to download from Official Facebook App of Android.

Oh, I'm sorry dude...
But, I think facebook removed the "download" function from the app... From which I occasionally see in my device... I think they removed it when they updated the app... I'm still not sure if they removed the function from the desktop site... But still, its worth a try.... If they did, I think you should stick to the third party apps or just don't download it..
Btw, sorry if you didn't get the kind of help that you wanted from me. ^_^
