[FIX] [AOSP] Easiest GPS and VVM Fixes - EVO 4G Android Development

I'm writing for 2 reasons.
1). The zip file in the current AOSP VVM fix is outdated and you'll end up with either the Ghost notification and a notification to update VVM, which will fail
2). There are too many GPS fixes that just don't work
If you didn't make a Nandroid of your phone, Stock/Rooted, find on on here and flash it, after you make a nandroid of your current setup.
Once you're in Stock/Rooted, open market and make sure VVM is updated. Then d/l Titanium Backup and make a backup of VVM.
Now, nandroid back to your AOSP setup, and extract the app from the Titanium .apk backup.
The actual name is com.coremobility.app.vnotes-6334abeb61350a3ac2629cb6dc18c56e.apk.gz
Unzip that and extract com.coremobility.app.vnotes-6334abeb61350a3ac2629cb6dc18c56e.apk to your sd card. Using Root Explorer, or whatever you use, install the apk.
Open TB, and restore data.
Open VVM, compose a message to yourself.
Done
For GPS Fix, I do the same thing. Go to my Stock/Rooted ROM
D/L GPS Status
Open Maps, and get your location
Open GPS Status, click on menu > tools > manage AGPS
Click clear, then repeat and this time click Download Data.
You'll get a lock.
Open dialer and dial ##GPSCLRX#
Then put your MSL in the password box (You need MSL Reader form the market for this)
the phone reboots.
Then reflash your current AOSP Nandroid, go to maps, then go to GPS Status again, and d/l the data. You should get a lock!

I tried that GPS fix twice with no luck/lock. Plus its a bit of a hassle and pain if you dont have a nandroid of a sense rom. Also I found using the GPS status program, I had to release and refetch the AGPS data every few days and was often a unable to lock.
However galandy has made an impressive GPS flashable fix found {here} - all credit going to the original developer of this.
I get instant GPS lock, 1-2 flashes from the GPS icon on CM7 Nightly (newest d/led at midnight) and I'm locked.
There are several listed in the post. I used **NEW** - Qualcomm Vision GPS Driver v1.1 (recommended)

The Galandy fix didn't work for me and a bunch of people who've posted said the same thing. (Not to take anything away from his fixes, they were genius)
The whole idea of what I posted is you gotta have a sense ROM, and some of the custom ROMS have the epst bug, where the code does nothing in the Dialer. Hence my saying to use a stock/rooted ROM, which will always work.

I was unaware of this method not working, I have used his fix on at least 20 EvO's without an issue.

I understand the idea of your post, I was merely trying to add another suggestion to your post for the people out there that don't have a nand'ed stock/sense rom (such as myself), or that did not want to flash one.
I understand that most roms out there do not have the correct/working ESPT. Please do not let my post count here lead you to believe that I don't know about our beloved EvO's.

As I stated in my OP I was unsuccessful in my stock/sense rom fix attempts.
But if my advise/help is not needed/appreciated on this thread, then I shall go elsewhere.
Good Day

That's hardly the case, and I don' even know why you'd say that.
Explaining why I posted this shouldn't be discouraging you or anyone else.

I apologize if this has come off dickish. There is no tone when text is involved (the current mood/attitude of the reader fills in the tone of the original poster) and I perceived this as a bash to my alternative.

I hear ya, not all meant like that.

I have no GPS issues but android system is devouring my battery on decks rom. That's GPS drivers causing that? I've flashed every GPS driver I can find including ones I've used in the past on other evos and none are working for me now. Any ideas?

about to start my first root/rom

Hello group,
Wish me luck. I am about to start my first root/rom install. Going with Andromeda. This will be applied to my 5th replacement phone for the auto shut down issue. It just arrived. I am getting tired of getting replacements and waiting for a good one so that I can go to 2.2. I have read the guides. I have a couple questions that I can't find a clear answer on.
1) I already have a paid version of mybackup pro. Can that be used instead of titanium?
2) My phone is up and running on the stock 2.1. Is it normal to restore all apps, data and system settings from the 2.1 phone to the 2.2 install? Are the system setting compatible between the two?
3) I think I recall some mention of writing down some number from your original phone so that if you have to set it back to stock for warranty. I don't see that in the official instructions though. Is there such a precaution necessary?
Thanks in advance.

1. should owrk
2.Never restore system data. Your just asking for trouble if you do.
3. Back up your efs folder from system and copy it to your pc. As roms chnage android id and imei
cool thanks for the quick response. Nubish question from your response. How do I backup the "efs" folder I don't see it using the phone to browse the files or mounting the phone via usb and browsing via the pc. Do I have to root it first?

Yes you will need to root it first and then you will need a files explorer that will allow you to get to the system files. I use Root Explorer my self. One of the few apps that is well worth the money
good luck with the first go at it. I just did the same the other day and must say best decision I made with this phone.
What everyone else said is good. I would also back up your contacts and write down your APN settings. Some ROMs change the APN.
Contacts:
1) Contacts > menu button > Import/Export > Export to SD Card > you will get a vcard file saved to your sd card. You should also back this up on your pc.
2) You can also sync your contacts with your gmail account. I usually take the vcard from earlier and import it into gmail.
APN:
1) Settings > Wireless and network > Mobile networks > Access Point Names > just write down the settings in case they change in the future.

Instead of this nonsense
You will be nothing but happy after flashing. I do not mpost much on here, just read and read, but this site is excellent in finding what you need. I ran Phoenix for a while and it was very good, but I have flashed Serendipity 5.0 with the latest Speedmod kernel and its working great. Battery life seems to have improved for me with this combination.
So did you flash?? What was the outcome? Success? Check out Ceszar's continuum theme for Andromeda, just love that along with Andromeda 2.0
I'm curious too as to how everything went for you.

Yes i flashed. running andromeda for the past couple days. seems fine. much faster and the gps lokcs in seconds now. with 2.2 i can now use skype, flash, chrome to phone and use the power button for the camera shutter. All wins for me. I am not sure I get any more battery life out of this setup. I have been playing with it non stop, so I don't have any real world numbers on the battery life. I also learned that mybackup pro can't restore apps backed up from 2.1 to 2.2 I tried 3 times and every time the apps would fail at some point and I wold have to hard close them.
I have noticed a couple times that I have lost the data connections either on wifi or the 3g. Not sure it's the rom, hardware or just plain bad cell sites. but on reboot the connections were fine.
Over all impressed with the dev team for adromeda. They have an irc channel and there seems to be someone always there to answer my questions.

Just an update.
I rolled back to the untheamed 1.0 andromeda and then applied the DMT Dark Theme. did not like the battery meter so loaded modded circle one. Pretty happy with the look now. See the attached running launcher pro.
That looks really good.
I wish I had seen this thread before you installed that new ROM. I would have told you that stickies are for sissies.
Do it all from the seat of your pants and depend on luck. That's what I say. (j/k)
Do you see that business about restoring all system data? I tried that yesterday, I think it was. Got a good install of Paragon RC5. I think I then tried a full system data restore from TiBu. Rebooted the phone and it started back up so that it required a PIN to unlock it. I guess because I had been using that function before install of RC5. The PIN did not work. Tried this method not only once, but twice. Finally figured out how to use TiBu for real, I think. Makes me wonder if these locking schemes are worth using. I suppose they might buy you just a little bit of time in case of theft.
If you get to jonesing for something new, check out the ROM mentioned above.
Glad you're happy with your efforts!
.
Glad to hear it all went well for you. And I like the look you got going there. Seems like you did great for your first time

I am not responsible for anything that you choose to do to your device. This is just a guide nothing more. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.
I am just dumb founded by the amount of bull sh*t in the stock Rom. The amount of bloatware in this should be against the law. I will tell you this much. Once i removed this junk my phone is much snappier. Have fun with it guys. Always do a nandroid before removing anything.

I'd like to add SWM-C to the list. I have no idea what it does, but I didn't need it running, so I trashed it.
You can also add "Tmobile Name ID" to the list if you don't use or want T-Mobile's for-pay Caller ID service.
ECID.apk is T-Mobile name id.

While we're at it, you can look Here to see some others that have been found to be safe to remove.
I personally keep some of the ones on both of these threads, but that doesn't mean they can't be removed.
Also, i've removed the genius app and had no troubles with the system running fine.

Much appreciated. Wasn't sure what dockpanel was, and hadn't gotten to axing that one yet in testing.
I guess that means i'm stuck with latitude, since I need Google Maps, but since carhome isn't "supposed" to work with our device according to Google, once it's gone it's toast.
I mentioned earlier that I un-installed the Genius app, tossing carhome gets rid of the rest of that silly talk stuff I can't stand. It's a danged touch device for a reason...lol.
I realize different things work for different people - my buddy loves the talking to it to make it do stuff, just not my thing.
But I need Maps because the feature of emailing places to people has become invaluable in a business sense for me.
We all use Maps, and as people need to be places we just email locations back and forth - someone simply clicks the link in their email and it plots it on the map, and then Navigation automatically computes driving directions.
Auto-sync with email notifies of the new location ready to be input, and you can share the location right from starting in the Maps app itself. When a person gets a new location to go to, they send that and their current to payroll - and their mileage is logged and compensation is computed before they even get to where they are going.
Score a point for Google making my work life much, much easier, and streamlining taxes and payroll.
Edit - i'm the guy I linked you to - another lol.
That thread was a group effort we undertook here to find out what all you could get rid of and still have the system run right. On my working install I use in my day-to-day on the phone, I have a lot of the apps I mentioned were safe to remove in the thread I linked to.
When we first got root on these phones, the day revolutionary was released, it was an all-out delete-fest to figure out what could be safely removed. Some people went ahead and froze things, others went ahead and just uninstalled them. By comparing notes and tinkering with it, we figured out most of what we could toss safely.
Like I said, I use some of the things mentioned to be deleted - but the focus of the thread was what could be removed, and not what personal preferences were.
When i'm doing all my GPS / A-GPS testing, for instance, I restore to my original CWM backup I made right after root and do all my testing with all the stock apps installed. I don't want to contaminate any of the tests by running a custom tweaked install, the only thing i'm trying to tweak in that instance is the GPS stuff i'm working with at the moment. I'm also trying to replicate the environment someone will be in out-of-the-box (or as close as can be since the phone is rooted with CWM installed).
Don't think that I run my phone on the daily with nothing on it - that would be silly and kinda pointless to have a smart phone that didn't do anything. But in the interest of discovery, you kinda have to go beyond what you're happy with to figure it all out. (or at least that makes the most sense to me)
Having tested software for a living for a while...just the habits I got into. Another reason why I go so overboard on backups. You should see all the CWM backups I have stored of this phone in different states.
Just wanted to clear up any confusion, in case you thought I was crazy about trying to rip everything out of the phone indiscriminately - there is a method to the madness (...or is it a madness to the method? Can never tell... )
The things listed that you can delete in the other thread are a pick-and-choose option, you don't have to remove them all.
Using ES File Explorer...
Can't seem to delete anything .... says that it can't be deleted.
Do we need to be S-Off first?
If so, how do we S-Off for Mac users?
There isn't too much clear detailed info for Mac users...frustrating..

There is no Mac version of the Revolutionary S-OFF method. You either have to (A) install Linux, configure it properly and run the Linux version of Revolutionary or (B) install Windows, configure it properly and run the Windows version of Revolutionary.
Your only other option is to wait patiently for HTC to provide a bootloader unlocker for this device which may or may not ever happen. They've released it for the T-Mobile Sensation, but that's a pure HTC phone and not a T-Mobile-branded myTouch model.
I've used Revolutionary on Windows and Linux and both methods are fairly straightforward. You just need to know what you're doing -- if you don't, you probably shouldn't be trying to attain S-OFF in the first place. Just use the permanent temp-root.

In another thread here, someone also found out that by un-installing the stock Google maps version, then re-downloading it from the market, you solve the problem of it running in the background all the time. Check the battery threads to find the specific posting, I forget which one it was in.
Glad to see we are coming up with all the little details here, everyone has a different approach to solving the problems we come across on this phone. Everyone sharing what they know here is starting to paint a pretty good picture of the whole situation - good job everyone!
(Yep, I know car home works on the device, but once you remove it you won't be able to re-download it from the market because Google has it listed as not working for this phone, so it will block the download - thanks for confirming from another phone that it is indeed working though.)

[Fix]- VVM on all sense 3.5 Roms

Ok, I love all of the new roms we've had our great developers dropping on us. But on most of the 3.5 roms sprints visual voicemail doesn't work, due to sprint not having an offical 3.5 rom we have to use other carriers ports.
Anyways I figured out a way to get vvm to work on any 3.5 rom, here you go;
1. Have a titanium backup of a working vvm (with a couple voicemails on it)
2. Restore it to whatever 3.5 sense rom you want.
3. Reboot into recovery wipe cache, dalvik then flash attached .zip file.
4. Once phone is rebooted, install the attached .apk.
Let me know if anyone has issues!, I've tested this on a few different 3.5 roms, works fine on all of them.
Note- I have had a couple of times after flashing different fixes that it breaks vvm, if you get force closes, just reinstall the .apk and it will work again.
*****DO NOT UPGRADE TO NEWER VVM, YOU WILL HAVE TO REDO EVERYTHING OVER AGAIN IF YOU DO!!*****
I don't quite understand the issue here. I'm running PrimeXL 3.5 ROM and my VVM works just fine. Unless you are referring to the text feature that comes along with it?
Is there something else to it?

Yeah, it's weird. I think some of the 3.5 roms are based on different baseboards, like I was having issues getting newtoroots/mik's 3.5 roms to playback directv's sunday ticket app, which I paid for so on sundays I'd flash back to mikg so I could use it.
But it seems like some 3.5 rom's have working vvm, and some dont. It will try to provision the app, but it ends up producing a "general failure".
This fixes that on the other 3.5 roms that it won't work on.
I dont use VVM but i know one of my friends that does. I'll pass the info along. Good work!!!
Sounds great man will take this into consideration man thanks.
It was my understanding that all you had to do was flash to a 3.0 ROM, let VVM provision, do a TB of VVM and data, flash the 3.5 ROM, and restore VVM using TB. So what are the 2 attachments for?
I'm not sure this really "fixes" anything, as once it flashes, VVM does a FC and I have to re-install. A simple backup-restore with TB works just fine, IMO.

David- That used to work on many of the 3.5 roms, but as things have changed and gotten upgraded in certain 3.5 roms, it somehow broke that way of restoring vvm services, but if it works for you or anyone else then absolutely stick with doing that, it just didn't work for me.
Gyro- I tried to just install the vvm.apk but for me on any rom I tried to do that on it wouldn't work unless I did it in the way I listed above, trust me I wouldn't of posted all of that stuff if it wasn't necessary.

Easy way to change that;
When you get one of those messages open it up and press menu, then click "block messages", then it will ask you for a password. Just enter any password that you want (make sure you remember it)
Then it should start blocking all of the 9016 messages.

No, it does not work with the new vvm app. It will give you the "generic failure" message if you upgrade and it won't provision your vvm.

Save the 9016 as a contact and go into your messages APP, Now set up your block password and add the 9016 to the list of Blocked contacts. Problem solved .
Hit thanks if I've helped

I tried this fix on Radiance RC-2. Radiance came with VVM but wans't sure if it was working and what not. I restored from TB my VVM (the one updated by sprint) and then got a voice mail today, didn't work. So I ran the fix (had it sitting on SDCard) and it reverted it back to old voice mail, then asked me to update, so I went ahead and updated and sent myself a voice mail. No go.
As I can see in this thread that there is an issue with the new VVM and it not working on 3.5 anyhow. So how would I go about fixing this? Should I restore my VVM from TB (even though it's the New one) and then run the fix again and let it revert it back to the old VVM?
Thanks for the help and also the fix.

Yeah, do not upgrade to the newer vvm. And you should do what you said to restore vvm service, restore your titanium backup, flash zip and install apk, do not install update.
I will update OP so this doesn't happen to others in the future.
That worked Ron. Thanks for the help. Silly VVM
Worked perfectly, thanks!!!

[Q] Solution for GPS Issues in Galaxy S 4G?

Hi,
Has anyone been able to successfully solve the GPS issue on GS4G? I was able to get into lbstest mode when on Froyo and was able to get a lock in about 2 minutes, but since the time I have upgraded to 2.3.6 official, there has been not one instance where I have been able to get a lock by opening up Gogle maps(not even after like 20 minutes!).
I have tried the app GPS Status &Toolbox which seems to be the only thing that was able to give me a lock but it takes about 15 minutes for the first lock.
Has anybody been able to find a suitable solution to fix the GPS issue on GS4G? If so please share, I am sure it will be extremely helpful to countless users like me!
PS: I really do not want to install a new ROM or anything but want to know if there are ways of fixing the GPS issues with on the stock 2.3.6.
BTW, I have root access.
Please help.
Thanks,
Rakshith
If you are rooted, you can dl super manager from the market. Open in and go to the apk manager. Find the lbstestmode.apk, click on activities and then in the first description, click the "create short cut" and it will place a shortcut on your home screen. Then open the shortcut navigate to supl settings and change the server to supl.google.com. Oh, and don't forget to rip lbstestmode.apk out of an old ROM before you do this...

There are other threads in this forum with fixes for this issue. Also you can try the GPS Aids app from the market.

I tried the GPS Aids app but was not of any use. Also, regarding other threads, I was unable to find a concrete solution to this issue, that's why I thought I would put up a new thread.
Is there anything other than GPS Aids that I can try?
Thanks,
Rakshith
Hmm, I don't know. Did you find the thread regarding wiping out a couple of xml files? I'd link you but cannot sesrch @ the moment.
Also GPS Aids has a hard reset function thst might help. Fair warning - it will completely reset your phone so you will lose data, appd, and settings. Make a backup first!

AngryGPS
-Download and Install angrygps on your phone from above
-Create shortcut on homescreen (add > shortcut > activities > angrygps> ...angrygps)
-Run and click tracking test
-Let it run till the accuracy gets under 10m (it will get multiple satelite lockons)
-Your GPS should now lock fairly quickly from now on
This was taken from this thread BUT the CWM flashable zip never worked for me, so i just stripped AngryGPS out and installed it manually. The file at the top link is the AngryGPS.apk that i stripped from the CWM zip.
Let me know how it goes..
EDIT: Supposedly this program used to be included in certain roms, so you may already have it. I think it should be included simply because it seems to work for people to get their GPS going AND its only 106kb, so I don't think people would mind the extra room it takes up
Download Valhalla Black Final. Raver's got a custom GPS driver in it. Trust me, it works well. haven't had issues with GPS since I've used it.

I have noticed the GPS has been doing really well on Valhalla Black Final. I ran angry GPS just to make sure (it's something I do when I flash a new rom), but thanks for the information on it having a custom GPS driver. Good to know

He told me a few months ago when he made it that the GPS would lock in seconds. I didn't believe him at ALL (the default GPS driver on our phone is pretty crappy) then I finally got around to testing it and I couldn't believe how fast it locked. =|. Haven't really used others' ROMs in a while so I forget that the default GPS is pretty damn crappy.
Just wanted to mention that the GPS is working extremely well for me also since migrating to Valhalla Black...and that's after trying many apps, patches and hair pulling since getting the SGS4G a year ago.
Kudos to the crew for their most excellent dev work, keep it up!
GPS works fine for me on octane 3.0.
Of course I never had GPS problems even when completely stock.

There are many threads out there on how to pull and push apps from other ROMs, just search for them. Yes this did fix the issue. When you are in lbstestmode, hit the get position test button and let the phone set for a few minutes. After that, you shouldn't have much wait time to get a lock.

Aside from this, here's another way of using AngryGPS. This will install the system app with an app menu icon.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15721652&postcount=13
This has the same file, just not modded.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15695743&postcount=6288
In both cases a phone reboot is ideal, though not really necessary with the modded one. Both work the same and didn't require anything else outside of stock.
There are a lot of threads on this subject for many of the Galaxy S models by Samsung, and each model varies. The system application to test and change settings on the SGS4G (and probably the Vibrant) changes between stock Froyo and stock Gingerbread.
On Froyo (VUVKB5), the application, called LbsTestMode, is ready and easy to access with the Samsung system code: *#*#3214789650#*#*
On the 3 Gingerbread (VUVKJ6) phones I tested, the same code, along with trying out a few others didn't bring up anything. So I installed the AngryGPS (new name in 2.3) files linked above, allowing me to use the system code (or app menu if you installed the mod version) to access it.
You can also look at this simple hardware fix too:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1043034
Would the angry gps method work on the ICS roms? CM9, AOKP, etc.

And if it does, what has worked out as the best way to configure it? I had it working when I was on build 40, but it would always revert to it's old behavior of not locking if I rebooted or turned off GPS or even exited AngryGPS.

GPS issues on the TF300T? --- aGPS Patch now released, discussion over

DISCUSSION has ended. Post if you want, but SOLUTION is NOW available:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1904048
Yes, I brought a customized aGPS Patch for this device just like I've done for 30+ devices so far.
Original post:
Can anyone tell me how the GPS performs on this device?
If you all think it isn't great, I can bring my aGPS Patch to this device.
I will require the following files:
/etc/gps.conf
/etc/gps/ (all contents)
I resolved the TF101 and the Prime's problems successfully. I bet I can resolve this one as well.
Well google maps only works with wifi...
Same here, when i was on vacation my digital compas kept spinning around and google maps couldn't even get a fix.
Neither did GPSFix..
After i did some googling i found a couple of apps. All didnt work out and in once it worked.. no clue what did it, but its still not great, when there is no open air you'll never have a gps fix and if you have open air you need a lot of luck..
Now i have a iPhone 5 and it sucks even more.. lol jk

If you are on JB try the worldwide fix from Hydro JB Rom. Even indoor Ißll get a fix in less than 20 sec.
will get you the config files later. I am not at home.

How "cool" is it to download something, open it up, and see no real difference between it and my 1.x branch patch. And, I get no thanks.
I wonder how my 3.x patch would do here.
Just give it to me and I´ll tell you how it is
Which one of yours should I flash?
Just flashing
Download the Google Specific CWM Flashable build
Will test it out a bit

I would suggest the Google No-SSL 3.1: http://derekgordon.com/gps-files/agps.patch.google.build.nossl.v3.1.zip.
However, for the other Prime series devices I further modified data to work properly. There should be an XML file in /etc/gps/ which would require some tweaking for optimal performance if the 300 works like the 100, 200, and 700 series Transformers.

Just installing my Navi to test. Needs a bit, cause I just flashed a new Rom

Well, could you download the ZIP and just extract the \system\etc\gps.conf file to your /system/etc path?
My 3.x branch has a large gps.conf that I don't want to paste. I don't want to have to try and trim it down just to drop here for a quick paste.
The reason being is that I actually took the time to describe for people what variables or variable sets actually do. This, too, was ripped by others who claimed to provide detailed instructions on the GPS configuration and how to tweak it.
I swear, XDA has become a ripping and no credits **** realm. But, I still like XDA for the most part....
so i got the conf file to the right path.
Rebootet and no GPS fix at all
So what changes I have to make in the xml file. Already openened it in Editor

That doesn't make any sense at all. If you're using Hydro's, which is exactly 1.x, then there shouldn't be an issue.
You have Wifi connected I assume. Further, I assume permissions are fine.
I think two Notes apply to you out of my extensive catalog of FAQ.
First, clear Cache and Dalvik Cache. Conflicts can occur when switching to this branch at first.
Second, "Location is way off? Like, not near you at all? This means your GPS is not actually being used. Try the following to resolve it: Goto Settings -> Locations and disable ALL options. Reboot into recovery. Clear Cache and Dalvik Cache. Reboot normally. Go back to Settings -> Locations and only enable GPS. Reboot once more and try your GPS again."
I'd like to get ahold of the XML file in /etc/gps/ if you want to work with me to get a fully customized patch made rather than the quick markup of just the .conf.
Which permissions does it use to have?
Rebooting now needs a bit cause of wiping cash 160 apps to optimise
GPS is there in a bit
Just send me your mail address in PM and l`ll send you the file.
Mail is on the way
So that everyone has a chance to test this if desired, do a Nandroid backup (DUH!) and flash: http://derekgordon.com/gps-files/beta/agps.patch.asus.transformer.300.test1.zip
The above operates the same was as the TF100 and TF200 patches I made operate. You'll have a new conf and XML file.
I'll drop this thread and open a DEV forum thread upon some more confirmations.
