[Q] Signal Strength - HTC Sensation

Hello guys I have a question or maybe a problem....
When my phone is on the table (I'm not touching it) and type *#*#4636#*#* enter the phone info screen my signal srenght is different from the signal strength when I have it in my hand...
There is a difference like 10-15 db is it normal or my phone has a problem
like iphone4 deathgrip...

Normal hand attentuation. Your phone's antenna has to pull the signal through your hand.. Try to not block the antenna as much as possible.
The phone could also be on a weaker cell site or sector and is waiting for the signal to degrade to a certain point before it switches over to the stronger signal.. Happens often.

thanks for the reply
but does this happen to every phone
because I dont remember something like that to happen at my nokia or sony eric...

which Sony Ericsson/Nokia?
I know the TM506 has an antenna at the top half of the phone so your hand doesn't block the signal nearly as much as it would if it was at the bottom. Some Nokia phones, especially the old ones had the same design of the antenna at the top.
Are you on the 4G or 2G network?

For example nokia 5800 xm
3g network

so this is normal ? I dont get it if you are with 1 bar you get 0 bars when you hold the phone ....

1 bar is not a strong signal to begin with. It's normal. The 3G network isn't as strong as the GSM network so the 5800 XM automatically had better reception because it was on the stronger GSM network and not the HSPA network.. unless you're not on T-Mobile USA?

I live in turkey
And as I know nokia 5800 xm also has 3g reception...
so the same must happen to nokia ?

or maybe its because of my selection in mobile network what is the "network mode" you use?
mine is gsm/wcdma auto...

weak signal with gsm

halo all, i come from hongkong,
i have my d2G running GSM/UMTS signal, and also the call quality. I get 2 bars or sometimes only 1 bar as signal strength when set to GSM/UMTS.
even i set is to global, it doesnt improve much.
what is the solution
That's how it works unfortunately. In GSM mode it shows signal normally. It is UMTS mode where signal is always shown as weak (despite signal readings showing ok in settings/about).
Despite the low signal indication, phone doesn't seem to suffer from that. On 1 bar I get 6+ Mbps download speeds and I never had a dropped call or even degraded call quality. It could be a purely cosmetic issue (inaccurate signal strentht display).
I only get 4 bars in UMTS mode when facing the tower within 100-150 meters at most...
Good to hear that, I suspected the same thing when I saw the signal bars on D2G and compared the speed with my N1
so the speed is as fast as your n1 , even it got only very little signal shown?
yes its more or less the same.

set UMTS only on an Huawei dongle E160 E173

not sure if this is the right place to ask this question but i ask any way (no harm in asking)
i have an Orange E160 and an Orange E173 (both locked to Orange UK) there are 2 UMTS (i call that 3g from now) i can see one of 3g towers from my house and 1 tower that is HSDPA (i call that H from now) that is less then 15% signal (must be far away) and that is giving me connectivity issues due to the stupid dongle (and mobiles as well) radio is preferring the H tower over 3g even thought 3g tower has 80%+ signal level
i really wish mobile device makers would allow users to disable H/H+ as it makes loads of issues (an H tower always has 3g fall back and normally GPRS as well unless its 3uk network as it has no 2g network) as well as HSDPA uses 30-40% more bat then UMTS or GPRS (to me thats fact as every 3g enabled device with H+ i have had i be lucky if you get an day out of the phone and the phone warms up as well, on gprs/UMTS 2 days normally phone norm stays cool)
the link below looks like the commands to set the speed to basic 3g but not sure how to apply the commands to the device
http://www.shapeshifter.se/2008/04/30/list-of-at-commands/
its the UTRAN command it looks like i want to use to make basic 3g working
or is there custom Huawei software that gives all options
just wish UK providers would Upgrade the towers all to HSDPA or make the Radio based off signal level not network type (UMTS, H or H+) as its cheaper to do (H is not reliable below 10% signal levels)

[Q] signal strength problem? switching between 3G & 4G

I have noticed that someone had suffered the same weak signal problem. After several days' observation, I have found my A2 had always full bars when the network is in 'G' but much fewer bars when it is in '4G' !! And it switches between 'G' and '4G' network automatically and I found no way to somehow fix it to only 'G' type !!!
Anyone have any idea how to fix the network type ??
Thanks in advance !!!
I constantly switch from 2 bars of edge to 1 of 4g and it is very annoying >.>
While it may be annoying to look at, are you actually loosing any data? Mine does the same thing but I usually don't ever see a drop in speed. Some times it does drop to G and then I will see a loss. Its usually not from 3 or 4G though.
You shouldn't notice any difference in a drop from 4g to 3g at all unless you live in one of the six major cities its launched in... Hahaha. I don't pay attention to signal type because of that very reason (unless of course its edge).
The annoyance for me isn't really the icon change, its the no signal for a moment while it switches over aspect.

Network signal

I have the s6 edge and i have really weak signal on 3g most of the time i only have 2 bars or only 1 bar or even none at times
On 2g i have full bars
But data speed and call quality arent really good on 2g
So i am wondering if anyone who got the normal s6 is facing the same problems i am facing or not
Me and many other face signal problems on the S6. If you watch your signal strength in the settings/about phone/status section, the signal will fluctuate wildly (on 3G), and the signal bars will also jump up and down while it fluctuates.

Could it be your service provider? The image you posted shows you have very good signal (-81)
Ahaa i think it might be yes... that's what i am gonna investigate in the next couple of days
My phone is unlocked so i am gonna try another prepaid line with another network provider to check whether it was the problem with the network provider or not

Cellular strength and throughput

We know how much you like to stream, ahem, "videos", and so cellular data is mega-important. Rate this thread to express how you think the Samsung Galaxy S10e's LTE performs. A higher rating indicates that it's fantastic: throughput is excellent and signal strength is top-notch.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add.
I don't go by the bars I go by the dBm's. The way this phone reads dBm's you pretty much show no bars after 117 dBm's. All other phones I've had showed 1 bar at 117. -97 dBm right now but still only have 3 bars. Should have full signal. -97 is pretty good. Anyways, I have an app that shows dBm's in the notification shade and that's what I go by. More importantly is the fact that my unlocked 6t has Volte with TMobile and my S10e doesn't. Sucks.

Signal Notification
The 4G signal is way less good than with my ex Huawei P20. And when it goes from bad reception area to a good reception area, it takes a lot of time to catch the actual signal, sometimes I even need to put on plane mode and then put it off.
Long time to capture signal

This. Takes a long time (minutes) to capture a signal from one area to another.
Anyone has experience with dual sim use in this phone ?
I barely get connection on the second sim and feels like the first sim has even worse reception when a second sim is inserted.
I got this phone like 2 weeks and very disappointed for cellular strength. As mentioned above, often i have to put on airplane mode to get connected to the internet.
This phone has serious problems with reception. It never really bothered me, I got this phone since launch, (exynos variant, dual sim) but now that I don't have broadband until my new provider sets up their network in the house, I have to rely on my mobile data, and it's amazingly bad. I have 2 sims in the phone, but it doesn't make any difference if I remove one or other. I'm in the UK, it could be Vodafone's fault, however I tried my sim in my previous phone (honor 8) and the signal was better (in dBm ofc) and I also tried my gf's sim in my phone and the signal was worse in my phone. I've spent days searching for solution and it turns out Samsung might went cheap on antennas so there isn't much to do. I've tried some 3rd party apps, tried to force only 4g, also tried 3g, reset network settings, reset access point etc; no luck. I'll transfer my number to an other provider and hope that it will help a little bit but to be fair, I don't think it'll help.
