[Q] battery overheating question

hey all, maybe its just my paranoid self, but i just want to be sure;
i was charging my phone, and at the same time, i was playing slice it. suddenly i realized that the back of the phone was getting really hot, and i checked the temperature. it was about 45c, and i was gettin freaked out, so i took the batttery and put in the fridge for like 10 seconds, before realizing that was a stupid mistake. after about 5 minutes, it cooled back down to 30.5c. i believe that perhaps the battery was around 45c for about a minute or so.
I was just wondering, do you think my battery life will suffer from my idiotic antics? Im a bit worried that itll have a significant impact, even if it was for a few minutes? Did i 'burn' out some of the lithium ion cells?

Just curious, does only your battery get warm, or does the top half of the phone (above the battery) got hot too?

its just the back of the phone where the battery is located

Mine did the exact same thing last night with fruit ninja of all things. I also put my whole phone in the fridge for one minute and it dropped the battery temp from 45c to 38c. The battery condition also said "overheated" instead of "good" which it has said since then.

Mine got to 53c while doing absolutely nothing, any idea what causes this?

I don't think anyone really knows and begging for an answer is a quick way to get flamed.
I know that if you were to rapidly cool metal or another material in that same manner, it would crack. I don't know if that same issue would apply to batteries. I definitely wouldn't put anything overheated directly into a frozen environment like that.

Mine had the same problem. Whenever i put it on charge it would heat up within minutes and then upon unplugging it would cool down. I read somewhere in the forum to discharge completely and then recharge to full. I did that and its been 1 week since that and no problems with overheating and battery life is also improved. My battery`s health is still GOOD i checked using * # * # 4 6 3 6 # * # *

I undervolted the cpu. Overheating almoat stopped. I swapped battery and has been better since. Usually running two quadrants i would start feeling it get hotter and hotter. On new battery i run four an don't notice any major change.

out of the blue overheating
My phone was awesome...but now it overheats....??
I am going to try and undervolt and see if that helps my problems but my phone just goes crazy hot when it's asleep and idk what to do, even w/ a new warranty phone, and i could tell it's new cause it still had the green tap by the buttons and stuff...the old one got crazy hot, but only after cm7 build33....and this was also after i changed the recovery to 3101 ext4 supported one....can a recovery affect your roms (overheat it) i would't think so, it only loads on command idk how it would....hmmmmm my vibrant would be a dead cold 28-29c when on idle/sleep but w/ this phone it just gets hot and is about 37-43 when doing nothing.....i'm going to try the undervolt thing w/ cm7 latest build and faux123's kernel 0.1.1 and try to undervolt it, i'll search thru that thread for good undervolting starting points...and play w/ that......idk i'm just confused why it is just now happening and not before, i had it on launch day and no problems till last week....i'm lost..

Overheating with LED cycling colors

Heya,
Last night I was playing Angry Birds in bed while plugged in a Kidigi dock. All is well. Now let me define some preconditions first.
The phone does get hot while:
1. Charging
2. Screen is on for a long time
3. Heavy CPU load
4. That goddamn hot weather isn't helping either
Right?
Put above conditions together. Temperature is 48.3C. I never thought I'd need to use a cooling fan on a phone, honestly. I did that to an overheating AMD desktop some time ago...
The thing is I knew there was something going on not by feeling the hot phone (remember the dock part?) but by seeing the LED strangely cycling through all three colors. Anyway I shutdown everything running, turned off the screen and kept my fingers crossed. The flashing stopped almost immediately as it dropped one degree in an instant. Took it 15 minutes to cool down to the normal 38C.
I looked around and didn't find a definitive answer for this one, even on HTC's site where they supposedly list notification color meanings. Therefore I now define a new one, let's call it "I'm just about to blow up now, k10xbye".
Has anyone else had such a drastic overheating case with this type of notification?

Nope. My phone hit 52 degrees. Nothing happened to it. Just turned the screen off and it cooled down

yes, mine overheated as well while playing angry birds and charging at the same time.This happend two times since I've got the sensation.

What was the third color? Mine only flashes orange for when its dying, solid for when its charging. Flashes green for notification, solid green when its fully charged.

Charging is orange.

I monitor my battery temperature by dialing *#*#4636#*#* which takes you into a section called testing, and then selecting battery information. This displays temperature along with other info. At one time, it actually said overheating. it has not happened again but if it does, I will seek a replacement unit. There is no way that any of this, your sceneraio or mine, is normal.

It's not normal. Heavier games with 3D don't do that. Max temp achieved was 42.

My EVO4G used to do that when I had it in the tank bag on my motorcycle listening to Pandora. The plastic cover would cause it to heat up and the led would cycle and it would stop charging and shut down.
There is a reason to this. The battery is mainly lithium. Lithium is highly reactive (read lots of very hot flames and sparks and excitement that you probably don't want going off near your girlfriend or dog or sensitive government documents). They use the same type batteries in RC aircraft, only lots bigger, and youtube will show some pretty spectacular lithium battery explosions, if you care to search them.
Imagine that going off in your pocket.
Ouch, a little....

Heh shutting down is reasonable, heating up till shutdown during normal use is not. And yes I watched those videos on YouTube when I got my wrist charger.

I m also suffering... But only gets hotter when u use the phone while charging, or use the phone for almost 20 mins continuously...

Here you go. 20 minutes Angry Birds, no charging, 43 degrees. Decided to quit. Anyway I've had enough for today plus not so pleasant on the hands.

132 Degrees?

Wow this is a new high. I was talking on the phone with headphones in, set it down on the table, started playing words with friends and hanging with friends simultaneously over 4g, and I noticed that the SCREEN felt hot. At this point I started to download a thermometer app. After playing another round of hanging, my headphones made beeping noises and the phone went from 5 bars 4g to no service. So I checked my thermometer app and it said 55 Celsius, which I then googled to be 132 Fahrenheit!!
Is this dangerous for the internals? I think the software killed the radio because of this. I put the phone in the freezer for 30 seconds and it came out at 50 degrees and the radio worked fine again.

Yes. While the system internals may be able to handle this temperature (although it's probably close to max), it's pretty dangerous to the battery and can ruin it.

if it does this frequently its usually the sign of a defective or dying battery or possibly bad phone... they should be able to give you a new battery or set you up with a replacement no problem, I think its a common issue from what I've heard in the VZ stores near me
blazing through on my 4G Droid Charge

I ordered this from tiger direct and i can't really go two Weeks without my phone so no giving it back. Also this phone works perfectly besides this one incident and the GPS, so i would rather not get a replacement that has data dropping, for example

[Q] how much battery does bln use

I wanted to use it and wondered how much battery was used if the LEDs are left on for an hour or 2
Also does blinking use more battery than static? I wanted to have LEDs on for one second then off for five
I wanted to use this because I loved the notification light on my atrix 2 that I had before skyrocket

I'm pretty sure they use little to no battery. I haven't really done any real tests, but i have never noticed any battery drain at all while using bln.

Yes very little battery, you will not notice any difference trust me. Its a very helpful feature, and I recommend the bln control pro app, you can set the notification to blink and also put time limits on how long it can stay on.

The capacitive buttons use very little power in light, it's literally no difference having them on, then having them off.

I may have to give it another try then.
I tried BLN once. I got an email sometime during the night and the BLN were on all night. I woke up the next AM and half my battery was used up.
Could have just been a fluke, something else, I dunno. But I uninstalled BLN after that.

You can set it for certain times of the day, so it won't be active from say 7pm to 6am.

According to Siyah Kernel via ExTweaks the LED backlights behind the Galaxy S2 capacitive buttons are rated at 3000mV.

When you have an actual led notification, it has its own capacitor to regulate the power used to conserve battery, it charges, then discharges, causing the blinking, saving battery. Though the capacitive buttons aren't set up this way, they will save battery if you use blink.

How warm do you guys let your phone get?

Hi everyone,
I'm about a week-long user of the M8 so far, and I'm loving it. I've been a fairly long time HTC user as well - I started with the Ozone, then fell back to a feature phone until I picked up the Incredible 2, which lasted for a long time.
At any rate, I'm no stranger to hot phones, literally. During my commute back and forth to work, I would use my Inc. 2 to record the drive with Dailyroads Voyager, while simultaneously monitoring road conditions with Waze. My good old Inc. 2 would power through those tasks like a boss, while at the same time burning up, and usually unable to pull enough power from the car USB charger. The only way to keep my phone stable was by running my car's defroster to blow cold air over the phone.
Now that I'm up to date hardware-wise, the M8 is no exception in the power house category. It can even keep charging while it's doing these things, although it does still get pretty warm. It's currently in a protective case which seems to dissipate the heat pretty well.
My question is, how warm do you guys let your M8 get? (Note: I'm rooted, but still running stock with no sort of overclocking involved.)

The only time I've ever had heat issues was when I mounted the phone to use as gps. And this was under direct 90 degree heat. Other than that, I've had no problems with heat whatsoever, even on prolonged lte usage and video watching.
My experience might be isolated though. I'd say, if your phone is uncomfortably hot to touch, you should probably ease up on it to be safe.

Yeah, always with the GPS navigation it seems. I wonder if this is something that can be fixed software wise (I.E filling a bug report to Waze/DRV), or if it's more on HTC's end for software/hardware...

I would assume it was just the metal body absorbing direct sunlight but I might be wrong. My HTC rezound used to double as a portable heater the way it used to get hot with extended usage. This one doesn't seem to be like that though.

Usually only heats when running tether for a period.

That's been my experience from the Inc 2, as well. So it seems like the mobile radio may generate quite a bit of heat...

I recently accidentally let my M8 get too hot while listening to music with it laying in direct sunlight face up. Didn't think about the black screen absorbing so much heat, got so hot it went into safety shut-off. It was almost too hot to touch, but after a couple minutes off it was relatively cool and turned back on fine with no problems or battery issue.

Low 40s Celsius is when I start to get uncomfortable. It's still safe, I just simply don't like it that warm. I get mad when my OC'd Intel cpu hits 60c even though 75+ is fine. I'm just anal about temps I guess

My Car mount clips onto the AC vents so my phone is always cool (I block some of the air through. Too cold isn't good either(

I agree that the only time (and it was only once) my unit got hot was while I was using it in its car mount and GPS was on. Otherwise I have seen none of the heart issues that plagued my Rezound and my Incredible.

I usually put it in preheated to 400 degrees and flip halfway through at 10 minutes.

If you're rooted, install XPosed and than install "CPU Temp in StatusBar" to keep really good track of the temps. Mine doesn't ever get over 110F, even under hard WiFi and streaming use. I've never used it for GPS in the car. At idle, it sits under 80F.

Thank you, I've been looking for a CoreTemp-like feature for my phone. I'll give this a try!

I've been hammering on my new m8 (swapping roms, installing massive amounts of apps, running tests, playing games ) for over a day and the phone has never gotten beyond lukewarm. Nothing close to what my m7 used to do

I never look at the temp. It will auto throttle if it gets too hot anyway. Just use the phone how you want and don't worry about it...

Well, I gave the temp monitoring thing a try (very cool!) and I don't think my phone ever passed 65 degrees Celsius, which I guess is ok. So no worries it seems!

That's a hundred and forty nine degrees F. Lol you need more ac.
