[Q] Pyramid Versions - HTC Sensation

Hi, maybe a rookie question, but what exactly is the difference between the z710a, and z710e, aside from the likely A(merica) E(urope)
and if that's the case, what hardware differences exist?

Different 3G bands.

We shall see what happens, although the bands are available in the "band" settings tab so it MAY be a radio issue.
Bit early to know yet, as there is only one user here so far who has hold of an AT&T Fuze (RAPH11000) we dont have a huge ammount of detail yet.
Both the newer 1.02.25.31 and 1.02.25.19 radios seem to have similar protocols (same QCT_BOOT and HTC_BOOT), it would be good if any user could flash the (apparently) older 1.02.25.11 radio and see if it does anything?
I really wish i could help out on this 3G front but no 3G in my area...
I can help...

I have the 1.02.25.19 radio here in Chicago. I know I have good 3G coverage from my TyTN II that I had previously. But why would you think the OLDER radio (1.02.25.11) would have U.S. 3G? ...jus curious.

I've installed the radio 1.02.25.11 and no luck with 3G in US ATT. only edge support.

I tried all the radios listed on the wiki too. None of them worked with 3G.

Its bundled with the AT&T ROM which is currently on the AT&T Fuze devices people are testing.
Higher radio version number doesnt necessarily mean a better one, as veterans of the Hermes will verify
The overseas Touch Pro cannot get 3G in the US. Just like the Diamond, the Touch Pro from overseas (RAPH100) does not have a WCDMA 850 radio.
Flash all the radios you guys want... it's not going to get you 3G on the 850 band. You'll have to wait for the US version/ATT Fuze if you're in the US and want 3G data.
Anyone know when AT&T sould release US version/ATT Fuze?

Until we have tested newer ROMs and radios that statement is pure speculation. MANY devices have had missing bands and etc...but have had them unlocked in ROM and Radio updates so it is too early to be writing off 3G support yet.
I have a TouchPro coming tomorrow. I called HTC today and (although I have about as much confidence in this as the paper I wrote this on) I was told by a lower level tech (I think he knew what I was talking about) that a "software" upgrade would allow for the European 3G enabled device to work in the US for 3G
... I sure hope so since I forked out the cash today
The Treo 750 didn't even start out 3G capable at all and was made 3G able with a ROM upgrade

Hardware
Maybe a very stupid question, but what about openning up an eu version to see if the quad radio hardware is there? I would assume the radio chipset would be labeled and numbered so that we would know once and for all.

I thought about this but cracking open a 900 dollar device and completely voiding the warranty really isn't worth it. If someone can get schematic from HTC which i doubt we could see if the hardware is installed.

I believe there is an asian hardware version, this is what the HTC techs keep mentioning that might have the 850 3G radio.
I have a case into HTC support asking them to answer the question for me around if the radio is hardware capable of 3G in the US and explained what bands I was talking about and that it was in the software to enable those. I Posed the question as if I was unhappy that I was selecting these bands and it wasnt working to try to get an answer out of them will report back when I am answered one way or another.

Just so you know - I sent a similar email to them regarding the 850 band on the Diamond and I was sent a very nice response informing me that the phone I purchased was not intended for the US and did not have the hardware capability to be used on ATT in the US. Low and behold the xda developers made the 850 band work. Now HTC offers a rom upgrade opening the 850 band they said was not in phone. Unfortunately the response you get will not be the definitive answer.

I understand yours and others' reasons for not believing me or assuming it's speculation. All I can say is there will be a lot of effort put forth for no reason, just like with the DIAM100, only to confim that the hardware everyone is trying to unlock isn't even there. If the efforts put forth do nothing more than prove the above to be true, then at the very least people can rest more easily with full confirmation.

I got a Z710e but need Z710a (850/1900)

I have searched everywhere and I am not sure if I can change the baseband (or if its doable at all) of my HTC Sensation to 850/1900. My carrier use those and I am stuck with a great phone but with 900/2100.
On a defy thread I found Fix_3g_850.1900Mhz-signed.zip (http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-944258.html) but I am not sure if it will work for a Sensation.
Thanks for your help...
As far as I know you can't change the baseband frequencies as it is dependent on hardware.

You need the Bell Sensation for AT&T bands. It's hardware only.
Or the Telstra version.
Thanks for the replies. Yes, effectively, I just hang up with HTC and its Hardware based the baseband so no luck to ever fix this issue. Such a bummer, I love this phone but I'll have part away from it. Its only 3 weeks old.

Because it is the official Thai model. All the other carriers work fine with it for 3G.. just AIS uses 900MHz. I bought it from a HTC shop not a carrier.
Still better than UK where we only got 900mhz 3g in January

I know this is an old thread but I am from thailand and I have the Z715e (Sensation XE supporting 900/2100 but would have liked 850MHZ). Moving from an iphone, which is quadband, i did not know there was an issue with frequency band and now I cannot use 3g on my network and am looking for some solution.
I see that Samsung Galaxy S and S2 also had this problem earlier regarding frequency band but with some internal unlock, they were able to use all bands. So, is there no similar way with the HTC Sensation XE or is it absolutely hardware only?? Would HTC invest in making two seperate radio ship for different phones?
Sincerely,
Ravit

[Q] have the inspire 4G and the Desire HD the same radio?

Since the Inspire 4G and the Desire HD are practically the same device. I wonder if they use the same radio. if they do, I think radio bands could be unlocked to work with a least 850/900/1900/2100MHZ WCDMA bands since the Inspire work on 850/900 and the Desire on 900/2100.

Like darunion said search. It's like this radios and Rils are different per Rom there is no better one and its all depends where u live and its a trial and error. Personal I never flash radio or Rils very often because each Rom comes with the matching ones. 2nd look in the sticky for the inspire thread for radios and if needed. 3rd desire hd is 99.9999999999% the same but UK but you can flash roms from the desire hd thread but search and search this has been talked 100+ billions of times.
Before you start flashing radios make a backup of what you have just in case.

ya the flashable radios are just firmware files. the frequency range that the qualcomm chip is using is set at the manufacturer. it cannot be changed, unless someone here works for qualcomm and can help out

Actually you don't need to work for Qualcomm to change it. I asked about Inspire and Desire Radio chip because I have a Droid Bionic which is "LTE-CDMA". but since it uses the Qualcomm MDM6600 radio chip which is CDMA/GSM capable, but GSM part is desactivated by Verizon. So searching in the Droid Bionic forum I could find the way to activate the GSM radio, turning the Droid bionic into a Global GSM smartphone.
So, I think the Inspire and the Desired has built in with the same Radio chip, but with certain WCDMA bands activated/desactivated depending on the model.
I just wanted to know the radio chip model, since I couldn't find it searching the web. I bet they use the same radio and there must be a way to activate all bands..

In fact is the same chipset: Qualcomm MSM8255. I am using the ARHD and is all the same for both of them: Radio and Roms. The thing is that the Desire HD has the 900/2100 UMTS bands enabled, and the Inspire the 850/1900.
According to the internet the Qualcomm MSM8255 chipset handle all UMTS bands but It can only have 3 of them enabled. So I am just interested in the 850/900 bands. So if I found a way to change the radio basebands I could enable the 900 band to my Inspire. But I couldn't find anything about it in the Web..

I can't find information about the QSD8255 in the qualcomm website neither the web, just some websites that claim the Desire HD also have it too..what a contradiction in the web..
NM8PD98120 is the FCC ID of the inspire if you want to do more digging.
you also have to consider, it may not even allow frequency changes from any kind of software side. Without a datasheet (which qualcomm wont allow public view) you wont know what components youll have to change out on the board to open up those additional ranges. And with phones having such a small life span (~2yrs till trade ins) not many are going to reverse engineer something they will replace soon.
which you could learn what to tinker with if you had both motherboards side by side and probed the pins
Hi dennis5pia,
Wondering if you had any luck in getting 850/1900 out of your Desire HD?
I know of 2 different Desire HD models the
1) A9191 (with 900/2100) http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=2598&view=1&c=htc_desire_hd_a9191_htc_ace
2) A9192 (850/1900) http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=2727&view=1&c=htc_inspire_4g_a9192_htc_stallion
I'm wanting to see if I can modify my A9191 to become a A9192.
Qualcomm's website doesn't even mention the A9192, but looking at the specs it certainly shares a lot with each other - including the same MSM8255
Whilst not as big a "jump" from a Desire HD to an Inspire 4G, I'd be happy just to get 3G on our Telstra NextG (850) network here in Australia.
Keen to know if anyone else has investigated changing between the 2 Desire HD models or successfully done this?
Kind Regards,
David.

I have the Inspire 4G not the Desire HD. Anyway there is a Desire HD from Telus (I think) that is a9192 and 850/900.
I couldn't be able to enable any other WCDMA band to my device. All I know is that most of the smartphone has a radiochip that can handle all WCDMA bands, but for hardware limitations they couldn't have all of them active or the carrier just lock some bands.
the MSM8255 handle all WCDMA bands but can only have 3 of them enable, but carrieres just enable 2 of them.
Hi, Thanks for the quick reply.
Yes I'm aware of other providers that have the A9192, but don't really want to go to the trouble of selling my A9191 phone & then buy a A9192 - would be great if I could just flash a new firmware onto the phone to switch off / remove the 900/2100 & then switch on the 850/1900 band - turning mine into a A9192.
So, whilst you haven't had any luck with your Inspire 4g do you know if anyone has been able to unlock / change bands on any of these HTC phones where the Qualcomm chipset supports other bands?
Best Regards,
David.

I haven't had any luck on this. I don't know anyone who had unlocked/changed/enabled bands on this phones.
I also found out that the Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon can handle 42Mbps but our phones only support 14.4Mbps. Companies just fool us..
Here is a link to a hardware mod site, that may be able to help.
I'll follow up with them & let you know if I have any luck.

change gsm bands

hello there
i`m from IL and i want to know if i can change the GSM bands to my location
as i saw a few post on that but iwm dont understan that
thank all
I think the gsm bands are for the network provider (tmo, att, verizon) you cant change hardware.
I assume you mean the data network bands not voice or 2G.
There are 2 physically different phones z710e (most of the world & TMobile US) & z710a (US AT&T). Look at the following and put in your country to check carrier compatibility.

The second post was for a completely different phone.
The first post (I had a quick scan and will look in more detail if I have time) didn't seem to address the issue you have.
As far as I know (happy for someone to shout me down) the HTC Sensation is NOT capable of universal frequencies, it is EITHER:
Z710a (2G GSM 850/900/1800/1900 ----- 3G HSDPA 850/1900) (US AT&T)
Z710e (2G GSM 850/900/1800/1900 ----- 3G HSDPA 900/1700/2100) (US T-Mobile)
That's fixed in the hardware of the phone and can't be changed. As you can see GSM is the same BUT the data side of things is where it gets different, you will always get EDGE as it's 2G.
The Baseband mentioned is flashed as part of the firmware.
The RIL (Radio Interface Layer) is the bit between the ROM and the radio. That will almost universally come with the ROM and will have a pre-requisite radio version that you have to flash separately.
Now if there is a way to change the 3G frequencies I'm sure there are many folks that would like to know how, it'd make the Sensation more universally available and hopefully cheaper in the 2nd hand market.
You haven't mentioned what your exact issue is, what are you trying to change and why ?
you answer me thank u and have a nice day

The second post was for a completely different phone.
The first post (I had a quick scan and will look in more detail if I have time) didn't seem to address the issue you have.
As far as I know (happy for someone to shout me down) the HTC Sensation is NOT capable of universal frequencies, it is EITHER:
Z710a (2G GSM 850/900/1800/1900 ----- 3G HSDPA 850/1900) (US AT&T)
Z710e (2G GSM 850/900/1800/1900 ----- 3G HSDPA 900/1700/2100) (US T-Mobile)

I was on the phone with HTC last night and according to the tech there the UMTS bands can be changed on the T-Mobile Sensation 4G, but this would require a custom rom. I am not sure if there are any roms out there that do this already.

[Q] Confused?

Might be a silly question but aren't devices that are the same made the same with the same hardware? Like is it made specifically for each carrier? They made 10 different version with different chips and whatnot for that carrier? what's making me not flash Sprint bootloader/recovery/Rom to a Verizon phone of the same device. Couldn't we just hack it to spoof to make it think its a Sprint phone? Im confused on why they would do such a thing, and maybe yes GSM/CDMA phones are different but i mean GSM to GSM /CDMA to CDMA. whats the deal?
