I have a Wi-fi Xoom and I saw this thread regarding rooting the OTA 3.2 using the stock rom and it seems simple to do. I am curious if this would give me r/w access to the mSD card and also access to a USB stick using the usb cable? I am not really interested in rooting too far out such as Tiamt or other roms.
The thread is: [GUIDE][US WIFI ONLY] How To Root Your Xoom From 3.2 Stock

Thanks,

Need further changes
I too was incredibly dissapointed that the SD card wasn't writabe and decided to reroot using the instructions you refer to. No problem rooting but that alone didn't make my card writable. After not finding a hack that I was comfortable with I flashed back to Tiamat 1.1 and am glad I did. SD card is writable plus I have all the other goodies. Waiting for the devs to release their own version of 3.2 rom.
You can write to the sd card using root explorer or ES file explorer (free) on a rooted xoom running 3.2

Hi all.
I know there are other posts which do in a way explain this however they are not so simple for a newb like me to read.
Here is where I have managed to get to with rooting my Desire S, S-On.
Temp root achieved with Gingerbreak 1.2 apk. Managed once to get the SD card to stay mounted however Rom Manager refused to download, so I downloaded the APK and emailed it to my self which installed.
Then the SD Card disappeared, I have tried taking that SD card out and putting a new one in (still wont mount).
During this time I have Superuser, however I cant mount the SD Card.
Once I restart Superuser goes.
Maybe myself and everyone one else will have to wait until a software version comes out, something like ODIN?
No XTC things close to me
My question is, is there a way to mount my SD card via the computer? and if so how.
I guess you have to wait.
The only working way currently is with XTC Clip.
That worked for me.
Ok seeing as the title states newb questions, I have one - what are the benefits of Superuser?
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA Premium App
Allows root access to the phone, meaning you can install custom roms, mess with the cpu speed etc.
Thats my understanding anyway..
Thanks lucca - I thought that. I can see lots of messing around ahead!
can we achieve temp root on s-on ? as i would like to restore apps from my backup root
the question is if you must the SD to root the phone?.. it cant be done using the internal memory right?
Maybe you can try plugging the cable to a computer and taking it out... maybe it will block it(like it always do when you plug) and then unlock it...
I never even tried this stuff so i cant really help, but good luck with it!
does anyone know how to achieve temp root? with this gingerbreak can i use it to do this if so can someone [post an apk of which they used and it worked for them
gingerbreak 1.2 from chainfire is working
Hi . I have a wifi only xoom . Just upgraded to hc3.1
I saw many threads in here with sd issues in hc3.1 and how to fix
but some are saying it could brick the xoom
so , I want to know the good way to do that .
which kernel and boot.img should I use ?
please provide me with their links
You already have 3.1 installed so follow this guide only from step 4. You don't need to do steps 1-3.

The instructions Burden gave you above are correct, just follow each set as closely as you can and you will be fine. THe key steps are 1) Unlocking the Xoom, 2) Rooting the Xoom, 3) Installing Clockwork Mod and 4) Installing the Tiamat Boot image and Kernel.
As for bricking your Xoom due to the SD card, don't worry the Xoom is nearly unbrickable. The only way I know of to do that is by trying to Partition the SD card using Clockwork Mod, so avoid that. Word to the wise...NEVER try to partition your SD card on the Xoom, there is no need to do it.
I did download and installed the kernel . but still my xoom dose not see the sdcard . I created folders with sdcard2 and external but same thing nothing changed

Assuming you're on one of the EOS nightlies or the CM9 kang, you don't need anything special to read/write on your external sd. I typically use Root Explorer, but ES File Explorer and Astro should work, too. What problem are you having?

No I am not in EOS or CM9. I'm in [UPDATE] [ICS] Stock IML77 Android 4.0.3, Root via CWM Recovery (U.S. Wi-Fi MZ604
And the problem I face is this below
Hardware sdcard continues to be read-only permissions via documented application
Why? cause titaniumbackup makes backups in a folder located on the microSD card,
That's not a big problem, transfer the folder to the internal memory of Xoom. But if it were possible would prefer the old folder.
That s why I ask! Is this official rom, is there any way to change is allowed? Just like the EOS and CM9.
tks
Apparently the application is running.

I just needed to wait a few minutes after ICS was booted and yes i use the app to give me the direct write any app on sdcard.
tks
Yes. Had the same issue, but found it resolved itself after sometime (might have been after about the 3rd reboot). I think it takes some time for the ROM to configure itself on the tablet hardware so that al lthe associated apps can work properly. I notice this happens especially after doing a wipre/reset of data, and/or when moving to a new ROM like EOS or CM9 as mentioned above.
Hi all,
I'm new to this rooting and installing custom rom thing. I rooted my transformer using 1 click tool, installed CWM Rogue something.. installed Custom rom paranoid android 2.xx which is almost the same as cynamogen10 i think, and installed gapps.. now i have my play store working everything is working except i can't access my micro sd card and when docked and ext usb is plugged it won't read.
Could you advise on this? Did I miss important steps in the process ? It's kinda annoying that the tablet is performing much better now but it loses some essential functiionality such as reading ext drive.
So I got S-OFF as well as SuperCID on my phone and flashed the Dark Jelly ROM correctly (I believe), however when I try to tether my phone to my laptop or use bluetooth, I would be able to connect. In conjunction with that, I would lose the ability to mount the internal SD card on to my laptop to transfer files when I have profiles of my phone on my laptop regarding bluetooth/tethering.
So what I was wondering if anyone else was having problems or am I making a mistake somewhere in the process? I didn't want to post in the Android Development, but hopefully I can get an answer. Thanks.
