Hello all,
I am looking for a way to back up a bunch of text messages (either in 1 string with 1 recipient) or a bunch of texts to different people, to my PC (windows 7).
Whats the best/simplest software to do this? (I already have Android Manager WiFi, but it doesn't seem to do texts/SMS's.
Thanks!

go sms backs them up for you in settings and gives you the choice to save only to disk or to email them as well.
Sorry, forgot to mention: I don't want to back them ALL up, just copy certain ones I choose onto my PC.

Hi could some one please help me delete some old partnerships in activesync, I use windows XP and activesync 3.7.1, everything works fine, but as i keep installing crap on my old XDA and also the new XDA-2 i oftern hard reset and then reinstall new or different programs.
The problem is each time i do this i have to make a new name for the partnership, i.e john-xda, john_xda, johns-xda etc etc, i have about 20 existing names listed , I know this is not the end of the world but it is anoying, and when you go to send a file via IR or BT from the laptop up comes a list of at least 20 old xda partnership names to choose from.
Please any ideas how to delets all of them apart from the one thats currently in use
Thanks
John
have you tried under activesync ? would seem logic to make it possible to delete partnerships from there
otherwise you can delete the folder made by the patnership under
my documents
Thanks for the ideas, I have looked in activesync but there are no options there to delete them, I have deleted the folders in my documents ( and the desk top short cuts to them) but when i try and send a file i still get shown the list of 20 plus names to send to, but the real problem is you cant use the same name twice.
thanks for trying tho
john
have you tried doing a search in regedit on the pc
it would be a typical place to store them
Go to ActiveSync while there's no device plugged in. Then select 'File', "Delete Partnership' until they're all gone.
Thanks Peter thak worked fine, i had looked in activesync but this was with a device connected.
thanks for bot of you for your help
John
is it possible to 're-link' the old partnership with an XDA after a hard reset?
b
why would you want to ?
you can still use the same name
you can still get access to all the files
you can still get access to the backup
so then why do you want the get the old patnership ?
just thought it might be easier than deleting the old partnership and creating a new one.
Also, do you know if the SMS messages are stored when the XDA syncs up? If so, how do I get the back onto my phone after a hard reset?
Cheers,
B
Old Partnership
If when you delete the partnership you answer no to delete files and the XDA has the same name the new partnership will use the same link area (/my documents/pocketpcXXmy documents)
ah HA! Awesome. But do you know about the text messages (SMS)?
B
Hi. If you had a partnership with your pc when you first synchonized and now you hard-reset your device, you might want to delete the old partnership if you don't need its documents anymore. That could be done in a very easy way even when the device is not connected. the steps are:
-Turn on pc
-double click active sync incon without connecting the device
-go to file>mobile device and select the partnership's name you wanna delete, when selected a big black dot will appear next to it.
-then file>delete parnership
Done!
Fantastic!! Although that still doesn't really answer my question
b
you cant sync sms's back if you took a backup and restore it you get the sms back or if you used the tool at yorch.net
With all of this ROM flashing, just wondering if anyone has come across an app that can save texts from one ROM, and load it onto another? I know it seems ridiculous, but its kind of annoying to have to reflash an updated ROM (when it says wipe and flash), and lose all of your texts. Some of the text messages have important info. Just wondering if anyone has come across something like this....
There is like 100 on the market..
search sms backup and 3 are on the top
has anyone found an app to backup farts for easy transfer from rom to rom?
check out txtarchive sms backup
stores sms on sd card
Can you load them on to a new rom? How would I back them up on my computer?
After reading through some.. Try "sms backup & restore"

Some of them, like the ones i just posted, save the text to the sdcard. You could move the files to your computer and have a backup.

Yup, just tried it and I'm extremely satisfied. Thanks for the reco guys.
I like SMS B & R, but for some reason I can never view the backup file on my computer in a readable format, even though it says it can do xml in browsers. The only thing it can do is backup and restore on the phone.
SMS Backup
I've always liked SMS Backup. It may not be able to restore your text messages onto your phone, but it will back up all your messages to your gmail account, allowing you to browse through them at your leisure. Beyond that, if you enable the automatic backup feature, as soon as you send or receive an sms it will automatically push it into your gmail for you. If you don't want to clutter up your inbox, it can put them all into a separate sms folder, and mark them as read as well. Just my two cents.
When I first got the Hero, I looked into making a symlink to the SDcard for the SMS Database. I never really got very far with it - primarily just to lazy to edit the Apps2SD script to include it.
Maybe TrevE would think about looking into moving SMS to the SDcard???
This would be the ultimate solution, assuming that the ROMs you are switching between don't require an EXT wipe and will all use the same A2SD version.
Seems like most of the SMS backup apps I have found don't restore at all or don't restore well to the native SMS app.
I really like "sms backup by christopher studer"
It's free, and backs up seamlessly to my gmail account.
Here ya go took me all of five secs to find it

Alright i have 2 other threads made but not all my questions were answered and i have a couple more
1) I wanna know how to backup my stuff so its not all lost just in case... Like a good app that at LEAST gets my contacts, sms and perhaps some app data? Only because i have ultimate password manager and it is a pain putting them all in
2) Im having trouble getting the drivers for my phone on my computer... i know i can press install driver in kies to get them but my computer keeps failing at that... what mode does it ahve to be in? Samsung ezupdater, media or mass storage?
3)can i just get a download link so i can install kies mini because i guess that is what i need... Correct me if im wrong
4) the main thing i want from rooting is the under/over clocking thing and i wanna get rid of the sms messages from my call log... Does the infused gingerbread kernel from the thread in the link below help me get that or do i ahve to find a rom first?if so what is a good rom?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1197248
5)Any help is much appreciated... thanks a bunch
Download the drivers from Samsungs web site.
Contacts - open contacts, tap menu, tap export. If you have an external micro card save them to that.
Once rooted, use Titanium Backup to back up your apps & app data.
Not sure how to save sms messages.
Overclocking can make your phone unstable.
I like Infused 2.1.0. Very stable and gets rid of the sms in the log.
Cranky...

Try SMS Backup and Restore for free in the market. Works like a champ
Contacts - I strongly recommend syncing contacts to a Google account. If you do that, backup/restore of contacts is seamless and automated.
Apps/app settings - Titanium backup. Don't use it for system apps/settings. Note that you still need to manually copy the TiBu backups from the SD card though.
SMS and Call Logs - There are two apps, SMS Backup and Restore and Call Logs Backup and Restore. Just like TiBu, you'll need to manually copy the backups off of your SD card periodically.

As far as drivers go just download samsung kies on your pc and install it. Then you can uninstall it if you want.
Infused should have some instructions to flash in the op. Just make aure you read through them a couple times before going ahead with it.
And honestly syncing contacts with google never worked for me lol. So i couldnt help you with that one

It doesn't work when i try and install the drivers... It keeps failing... hope my phone isn't screwed. Is the infused gonna work on my canadian infuse 4g on rogers? and ill try the contacts another way... maybe an external sd card... thanks
I would recommend going to the market and searching for "contacts to SIM", it will backup all your contacts to your SIM Card so you can just pop it in if you get a new phone.
Also, Titanium Backup is great for applications (and their data).
For the drivers I'm not sure, I would say uninstall Kies and plug your phone into mass-storage mode, if you're on Windows it should download and install the drivers automatically...
Alright contacts to sim worked perfectly... Titanium says I need to have root access so maybe I will need to copy those pws... And for the driver situation... I'm on windows 7,and when I plug in my phone on mass storage, it comes up with the windows that has like browse files and that stuff, kind like when you put in a dvd, it has play and in all the programs you can play it with... Does this mean I'm all set?

The SIM is very limited in terms of what contact info it can store for each contact. I'd strongly recommend syncing to Google, as it should backup nearly everything.
If you want a "non-cloud" backup, GMail supports exporting contacts in multiple file formats.

I wanted to do that but it doesn't seem to work... the check mark is there to sync them in my gmail app, but it doesn't actually show up on my gmail. i just bought an external sd card so i guess that'll do...now one more thing... If i want to root my device and have infused 2.1.0, do i still need to do the root that i had linked to below?http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1197248
Like what i am thinking has to be done, correct me if im wrong, i would root the device with taht, then that allows me to use the rom, im thinking in the rom downloader?
It is possible to install Whatsapp on a Asus tablet.
But you must have Whatsapp already working on your Android phone.
Just make a backup All apps and data with Titanium backup from Whatsapp on your phone.
Go into the TitaniumBackup folder at your phone and copy the three files starting with com.whatsapp to your Asus tablet. U have to put these files in a folder named TitaniumBackup.
Then download Titanium Backup on your tablet.
In settings, applications, Development enable USB debugging and allow mock locactions. At applications enable Unknown sources.
Go to Titanium Backup and scroll to the com.whatsapp file.
Restore app and data.
Now you should have working Whatsapp !
Hey it works! Great and so simple
Only although I have all contacts on my TF, only the phone numbers appear at my whatsapp chats. Any fix for this?

do i just put the 3 files straight into the titanium back up folder since i had it installed before or do i need to make a new folder and search for it with titanium back up?
the .comwhatsapp files are not showing up in titanium backup after i put then in titanium back up.
It works!
Yeah, just put those three files in titaniumbackup folder and restore with the app (app + data ofc.)
The contact problem can be solved in app by pressing a contact with only a number and clicking "add to existing contact" and selecting the right one from your contacts.
Hope this helped!

Great, I'll try it tonight.
Another question, I resumed an existing chat with a friend and all replies returned in whatsapp on the TF but not on my phone.
Next I asked my GF to send me a message in an existing chat, and the messages came on my phone and not the TF.
So, can I conclude only replies to a message initiated from the TF get returned to the TF but when someone apps me it always appears on the phone?
*edit* well, I just noticed that when I was away today I received some apps on my TF which did not arrive on my phone so as long as I cannot synchronize this it nis not very handy...
Just to add to this and hopefully make sharing with your phone easier.
1) Install Droidwall from the market on phone and tab (assuming you've got whatsapp working as above).
2) Change to blacklist mode on Droidwall and select both settings for whatsapp (3G and WIFI).
3) Save rules
4) Then just turn on the firewall on the device that you don't want to receive messages.
You can switch in seconds between the two. I've been using this for a couple of weeks with no problems. You obviously need to be rooted but Titanium requires that anyway.
Hope that helps.

Not at present unless whatsapp change something fundamental. Failing that you'd have to keep swapping files with titanium but that would be a real mess.
hm. ok. i thought this already :-(
another question:
if i install it on both, i can write from both on same time?
example:
i receive an message on my phone, but i answer from the tablet.
sure, i can't see the messages from tablet on the phone, but my fried receive the messages?
or rather: receive both devices the message, or do only one?
background:
it' s only interessant when i'm @home, because tablet has only wifi, so i text @home with tablet and "on the road" with the phone...
u now what i mean?!

You can send from both devices simultaneously but, unless you firewall (with Droidwall or similar) the device you're not using, the replies could go to either phone or tab. They won't go to both. Droidwall is very easy to set up and as you have to be rooted to use Titanium it's no hassle.
Your English is fine, had no trouble understanding you
hm, ok.
i think i'll test it and then we see if this is practicable for me
thank u for helping.

I can't believe there not a way to do this.
You won't be able to pull anything that will help. It's all encrypted by default. If you don't have an encrypted device then you will have to pull the contacts db file.
They should be backed up to Google.

Not sure if you have only saved your contacts locally on your handset however when you put in a new contact you have the option to save it to Google contact at your email address i believe new contacts are saved to your Google account as default so you should check if this is the case ,
