Does anyone know where the sounds for the ringer volume beep are located and if they can be changed?
Thanks!

They're in the same place they are on any android rom.
/system/media/audio

Thanks I know about this location. I think I may have not made myself clear.
I'm looking to change the sound of the beep when you adjust the volume up and down with the volume rocker. On Sense ROMs it sounds like a piano climbing the scales. On CM7 it is just a beep.
Can anyone help with this?

Just get whatever sound you want and make sure they're in mp3 format.
There are only 7 sounds and need to be named Volume-1.mp3, Volume-2.mp3 and so on. Then transfer them to system/customize/audio/ui being sure to rename the the other volume sounds by putting .old at the end.
You should also have to reset the permissions and owner of the mp3s you drop in to match the destination folder. Like below.
Long press on the mp3 and choose permissions...make it look like below.
Read Write Execute
(x) (X) ()
(x) () ()
(x) () ()
Then select ok
Now long press on the mp3 and choose change owner
In owner select 0-root
In group select 0-root

Edit: Is this what you are looking for? See attached

You know exactly what I'm talking about! Thanks for the sounds too!
Unfortunately I tried following your instructions but the sound is still the same. I created the system/customize/audio/ui directories since they didn't previously exist and added the mp3 files you attached. I also tried placing them in the system/media/audio/ui directory since it was already there and received the same result.
I was sure to change permissions and owner in Root Explorer and restarted the device several times.
Any other ideas?

Oh? What rom are you running CM7? Sorry!!! Don't create those folders. you need to place the files in system/media/audio/ui. Give proper permissions and ownership like before.

Ok, I'm confused?! I looked through all of CM7 sub-folders and I couldn't find anything? The string that I stated above is where they should be located but they're not? Just placing them in that file folder will not work I don't think?? Perhaps someone more learned than I can step in and help out? I'm sure that some xml or other file would have to edited to make them work (like point to the location of the new files).
Sorry I couldn't be of further assistance.

No problem. We just need to locate those pointers. I'm sure slayher knows where this all is but I don't want to bother him.

Disable shutdown/poweron sounds

Apologies if this was already posted- I haven't seen it yet. If you're looking to disable these and you have root, you can use root explorer (or another file manager may work).
Just drill down to "/system/media/audio/poweron" and rename the "PowerOn.ogg" file located there to something like "PowerOn.off"
The shutdown sound file is in "/system/media/audio/poweroff"
No more odd looks if you decide to reboot in the middle of a meeting.

Question about possibility of new ringtones.

Would it be possible to have a ringtone or even a start up sound that says Droid? Like a robotic type?

Of course. Any mp3 can be used as a ringtone or startup sound.
Ringtone is especially easy as you can simply select it to be your ringtone from your music player.
Just copy the mp3 into the music folder on your sd card.
Startup sound is easy too, but you need to either edit a ROM zip file or use ADB commands to get it to the right place.
Is this something I could do? Or ask someone with more knowledge than I? If so please point me in the right direction.

To change the startup tone you'll need to be S-OFF/rooted as you have to change the android_audio.mp3 in /system/customize/resource to something else (but keeping the file name the same)
Okay sounds easy enough now the next step is producing the sound to say Drrroooid.. Is there a program i can do this with?
Here ya go. How about the startup sound, and boot animation.

They are easy to instal, I have both working on my Sensation, Google Droid live wallpaper for the full experience, there are also clearer instructions on how to get it working, I recommend using Root Explorer.

Make a directory on your root SD card for your Nexus (I know it doesn't have an SD card, but plug in your phone to your PC using a USB Cable and from there turn on USB storage.
Once looking through the directories on your phone, create a folder called Media. Inside that, create a folder called ringtones and place your MP3 file in there. Your Nexus S should recognize this file as an MP3 and it will be selectable from your ringtones after you unplug your phone.
The same can be done for Alarms and Notifications.
For instance,
Media/Ringtones
Media/Notifications
Media/Alarms
When you unplug your Nexus S from your PC after you put files in the respective folders above, your Nexus S should recognize these files and you should be able to see them then next time you set a alert of some sort.
Hope that helps!

Excellent answer , sure that helps much.
Thanks
Found out that creating the Ringtones, Notifications, Alarms folders in the root of the SD card has the same effect. Might require a reboot too take effect.
You can also use an app called ringtone maker by big bang dev to edit and set ringtones.

A lot easier: Just download Zedge from the market. Will let you pick any song just anywhere.

Is the same methode of making a folder with "Media" name applies for a Wallpaper ?
I don't like the stock ICS wallpapers and I have a folder of the stock GB wallpapers on my PC.... How can I incorporate them with the stock ICS wallpapers ? is that possible ?

Text Message Tone

How in the world do I change the text message tone, or for that matter edit a custom sound set? I changed the notification tone but that didn't change the message tone and I do not see an option for it..
Sorry for the dumb question.
Thank you
Under settings within the messaging app?
Yes that worked, thank you... How can I edit a sound set? I created a custom one but all it did was duplicate the one I created and I don't see how I can edit it.
Someone else will have to help with this, I don't have my device yet.
Try going to settings>personalize and look at the bottom of the screen, you'll see sounds. Click that and you can change and adjust many different notification sounds from there. Took me forever to find that.
Also, if you want your own custom notification sound to show up on the list, create a folder using your favorite folder browser app (like astro) or by mounting to your computer and name the folder Notifications. Put whatever music or sounds you want in there and it'll show up on the system list.

Ringtone help

I've given myself a headache over this. I have a custom ringtone I want to use as a notification tone. Easy enough, put it in the folder media/ringtone/notifications. Don't show up. I do a reboot, still no dice. There is no + like in phone call ringtones to add a new one. I'm lost haha. Any help? Seems so simple, just a new ringtone!!

Create a folder in Memory SD card with ES File Manager.
Open File manager go to the SD card, and create new folder named as “media“(without quotes).
And open the media folder, and create another new folder named as “audio“.
Then open the audio folder and again create 2 new folders. One is “notifications” and another one is “ringtones“.
It must be in this path- SDcard> media> audio> notifications
Move the tone that you want to set as notification ringtone to the notifications folder.
You can also use the ringtones folder to set the ringtones.
After that, go to Settings> Sound> Notification Ringtone.
Now you can see the custom tone that you moved earlier to the notifications folder.
If the moved tone is not there, then restart your phone. Then check the ringtones settings. It might work. Has for me.

May have to go ogg. Or check orginal files to see what format they are and try matching. I never had a problem with mp3 or wav. Are you on a sense or aosp? Sense may be conflicting.

I have googled and it told me what you said. No other solutions but I'll keep hunting.
Sense. I hadn't thought about that... I'll wipe caches and if that don't work I'll reflash the Rom on running (venom)
Edit: clearing cache did nothing. Wiping and flashing now...

Just pulled a notification from viperxl. It's a m4a format. I will see if I can convert and get on to work on viper when I get home.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
Viper will not let me change it. Even tried renaming it to notification already there. I think it is a size issue. Maybe someone can shed some light on this because I have become very curious but do not have the time at the moment to investigate further.

Don't know if this helps. But I use ring droid. Its a free app from the play store. I downloaded the "droid" sound bite. And now I use it for SMS. I would suggest doing that and then looking in your notifications.
Sent from my Carbon-ize Evita using xda-developers app
I tried it with Zedge and Ring Droid on Viper. As long as you download tone it will show up. But if you put it in folder manually, it will not show. Uninstalled because Viper doesn't like android apps. No problem on Chameleon.
