I'll be moving to Sprint from T-Mobile in the near future, and I have some questions about the hardware keyboard on the EVO Shift 4G.
I was very interested in the Droid 2 Global on Verizon for the dedicated Tab, Alt-Lock, and arrow keys. I use ConnectBot (SSH) on a daily basis to manage servers, so I need a dedicated tab key for autocomplete. The Alt-Lock would also be nice for typing strings of numbers.
So I have some questions about the Shift:
Q1: Can I remap a key (the search key, for example) on the Shift to become a dedicated tab key?
Q2: Can I map the track-pad as U/D/L/R keys (Y+/Y-/X-/X+) for something like an SNES emulator?
Q3: Does the FN key cycle through Off/Single/On like on software keyboards? If this is the case, I don't really need an Alt-Lock or FN-Lock key.
Q4: I noticed that Cyanogen supports the EVO 4G, but not the Shift. What are some stable, lightweight ROMs for the Shift that provide good battery life and network control like Cyanogen does?
Q5: This is a more general question, but how happy is everyone with the Shift and the Sprint 4G network?
Q1: Can I remap a key (the search key, for example) on the Shift to become a dedicated tab key?i know there are apps that allow the remapping of buttons, but its also inside cyanogenmod itself
Q2: Can I map the track-pad as U/D/L/R keys (Y+/Y-/X-/X+) for something like an SNES emulator?never play games on my phone unless its angry birds or something like that
Q3: Does the FN key cycle through Off/Single/On like on software keyboards? If this is the case, I don't really need an Alt-Lock or FN-Lock key. push function once and enter one special character double tap and enter them till your fingers get soar or you click function again
Q4: I noticed that Cyanogen supports the EVO 4G, but not the Shift. What are some stable, lightweight ROMs for the Shift that provide good battery life and network control like Cyanogen does?we do have cyanogen mod thanks to toast, we also have evervolv and shift deck miui, but IMO sense gets the very best battery life i have seen so far on my evo shift
Q5: This is a more general question, but how happy is everyone with the Shift and the Sprint 4G network?[/QUOTE]
happy as hell with the phone there isnt nothing i havent seen it handle well, now for the network over the last 5 months has been worse then aol in the 90's so yeah i hate the network

i agree completley with the answer to number 5! lol
CyangenMod is available for the Shift and has been since CM 7. They haven't updated the main site, but if you look at their wiki or forums you will find its supported.

Hello everybody,
I just ordered my HTC Touch Pro and I expect to receive it tomorrow. Having played a bit with the Diamond, I already noted that switching from my Trinity will cause some changes from the hardware buttons perspective.
I'd like to know what's the best available software out there (commercial or freeware, doesn't matter) to remap the buttons of the device, and enables features like single press, "double-click", press-n-hold-short, press-n-hold-long, etc.
Thanks a million in advance.
I am also concerned about the same
I did some checking around and have these two apps for you to test
I didn't try'em out yet
And there's a third AEButton or something
I'll get it as well
Tell me how it goes

I have used this with my Kaiser and Hermes:http://ae.inc.ru/aekmap.php and I think it's pretty good.
I have a similar question, but not completely.. Is it possible to do any kind of keyboard mapping without any software? Just like altering the registry or something. I would like to get ctrl or FN + o to do ö and ctrl or fn + a to do ä. But i absolutely hate to run any mapping software..
AEButton Plus is awesome for mapping buttons... Check it out.

I seriously doubt you could use a quick reg edit to do that... But good luck.
Thanks man
had version 2.5.2
Hopefully will come in handy when I get my hands on my Raph
Which buttons did you remap?

I received my Touch Pro yesterday and I directly tried the apps you provided. Hbutton works only on the lower right key (open phone app), while the other doesn't work at all... I'm going to try AE Button and let you know what that gives.
I think currently both the Home and the Back keys can't be remapped -- without touching to the ROM, I mean.
green button
there is a dialer app (idialer) it has an add-on called greenbutton.cab it allowed me to hit the send/call key and bring up idialer instead of built in dialer from that key. I'd like to be able to do that for other dialers like OneDialer. I wish I knew some coding maybe modify the greenbutton app to work for me.
DCD's latest 2 CDMA ROMs (2.27 & 2.30) both allow you to remap all the hardware keys. Not sure how he did it though, but feel free to check them out. His ROMs are usually pretty lean, so you can install whatever you want, without much pre-installed bloat.
As the title states is there any way to do such? Im missing the arrow keys
arrow keys would be awesome... moving my thumb over the text to move the cursor is quite inaccurate, it usually moves one character to the left or right just as you let go.

Agreed! It makes for a 'clunky' feel of the interface.
Not good for a flagship phone!
Check out "Arrows Keyboard" in the market. It's .99 but might be what you're looking for.
I prefer smart keyboard pro, there's an option to show/hide arrow keys. And a lot of customization including skins. So you can even use the htc-like keyboard

i have an apk from a glacier's VU port, but i am not sure if it will work with the sensation
Swiftkey x has the arrows in its options and looks awesome. It actually performs better than the stock htc one too.
ive been wondering this since i got my S4G, but until we are fully rooted, we cant port/install that apk for full use
but smart keyboard pro its prolly the closest well get for the time being, its quite responsive, looks very similar, and has the options to change skins/colors
i fully reccommend SKP, then swift key, but thats just personal preference
Mods, would it be OK to maintain a "wish list" for mods or additions here in the Dev forums so that chefs / developers can take ideas and cuss from there. Kind of like a "meter" to see what the biggest (software) issues of the users with the device are?
If thats not desired here in this subforum please move or delete this.
My first suggestion would be the "Three dot menu fix" already out for the One X by blubbers. The new buttons on the lower end of the screen take some using to. I still miss the menu and search key.
Ideally it would be awesome to get the entire three key panel hacked to allow multi-custom presses. Such as:
Left "<" Press once for back, press and hold for task switcher
Middle Home button: Once for homescreen, double tap for Apps drawer?
Right key: Tap once for old school menu, double tap for quick-search launch
Maybe even triple uses are possible later on, such as press and hold, with either hard coded functions or customizable functions.
---
Second Idea:
In standby mode when playing music the side volume rockers modify volume which is nice. Maybe it is possible to modify / enhance the behavior to do a previous / next track skip by pushing and holding the upper / lower vol key, while maintaining the volume adjustments on short presses.
I know this is probably quite far off as the development is just kicking into gear, but a collection of such ideas might be a nice thing to have, although it might be the wrong subforum for such a collection.
Thanks for your attention
have a look at the virtuous rom, it already features some of the changes you want...

Another one might be to allow the 4 shortcuts on the lockscreen to be different from the ones in the dock. I know I don't always want them to be the same. This was one of the better features of sense 3 which has been lost.

Number 1 this is the wrong section to post it in should have been posted at "One S General" and it's not a good way to start off the phone by requesting things.
Thread moved to general... this is a wish list... not development
And I would add that wishlists are so specific to each person, maybe you should create a poll or something to see which general wishes people have so that a ROM can be made to satisfy as many people as possible...
I like that idea! Would it get rid of the big black bar with the 3 buttons coming up on some games? Hate that so much!
EDIT: Having had a look at that new ROM looks nice. Going to have to learn how to do it at lunch!
Does anyone know how the virtuous is getting on?
The phones rooted now anyone busted the uptake kitchen yet? Or tried sys tune. Not even got my phone yet lol
I think in regards to mods...toolsets wont take long to appear the biggest question is will asop ever arrive I know quite a few devs have gone to the x...
Forgot to ask...anyone tried changing dpi yet?

I know there have been a couple of posts dotted around asking about the keyboard dock but I've seen nothing definitive.
I have the dock and it worked great with Honeycomb. I neglected to think about how it would work with a custom ROM before flashing one.
I've gone for the CM9 ROM and although generally typing on the keyboard works it is far less functional. The majority of the (very useful) hotkeys don't work.
Including:
Home
On screen KB up/down
Menu
Play/Pause Media
Makes the whole thing far less useful :-(
I'm interested in if anyone knows anything I can do to make this better on CM9 or even if it's likely to work better with any different ICS ROM?
Yes, the keyboard dock hotkeys don't work, all except the back key. But even more annoying it is that the software keyboard shows up and it shouldn't.

I do not have a genuine Samsung keyboard (yet) but you should be able to map home, menu and the media buttons with my app: http://www.apedroid.com/android-applications/external-keyboard-helper
You can also specify up to 16 apps and create shortcuts for them. For example you could start the browser with Alt+B and Gmail with Alt+G if you want to.
Yep
I remember that happening occasionally before but it's constant now and even more inconvenient without the convenient hotkey to hide it.
Can I assume this is pretty constant regardless of the ROM used?

Yes I think so unless it is a HC rom based on a stock ROM.
I'll fix some of it in the CM9 port once I recieve my BT keyboad case and have something to test with. If you just want to get rid of the on-screen keyboard you can use my free app that does that and nothing more: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apedroid.hwkeyboardhelperfree
If you want full control you need my paid app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apedroid.hwkeyboardhelper
Free demo: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apedroid.hwkeyboardhelperdemo
Thanks for the advice. Your app looks really helpful.
I've no problem buying the pro version but want to have a play with the demo one a little more first.
I'm having slight issues trying to map a few things:
App switching: can map keys to this but doesn't seem to do anything
"Internet" / "Mail" - these two keys aren't picked up by the mapping config as they immediately jump away launching the browser (I'd love to remap to chrome) or asking me whether i want Gmail or Mail (and not remembering my selection)
I've mapped home (hooray!) but although it takes you back to the launcher it doesn't necessarily take you back to the default screen as the onscreen home button does (that's a really small issue!)
Any thoughts about those?
On the subject of the demo version of the app... Is the only thing that's different between that and the pro version that the spacebar is mapped to: _This_is_a_demo_version!_?

The problem with keycodes is that some are handled erlier in the input queue before I can process it in my app. App switcher and Home is two examples. I managed to do a workaround for Home but I have not yet found a way to bring up the app appswitcher programatically.

Same reason here. Android propably picks up and processes these before the app get a chance and therefor the scancode is never passed on. However, when I get my BT keyboard dock I can investigate this more.

This is due to the nature of the workaround. I just launch the launcher which gives almost the same effect as when the system processes the Home keycode (apart for the difference you noticed)

The versions are identical apart from the space button and some strings (demo vs pro, buy vs rate) so you can test out everything before buying.
You really should try the application shortcuts. Choose apps for A0 to AF and enter A0 to AF instead of characters when doing a custom layout. You could put the Email app on Alt+E and Gmail on Alt+G etc... Setting it up could be bit more userfriendly but once you figure it out it is not that hard to do.
Have got the pro version now and the overall effect is not much worse than the keyboard was under honeycomb so thanks very much.
Have setup a few short cuts (chrome and Gmail) and mapped them to some of the otherwise non-working function keys so that's great too.
I have AOKP Milestone 6 installed and I love how it looks, especially the Hide Notification Bar option because it makes my TF feel more like a netbook when I have it docked. The only problem is that the long press shortcuts don't work on the keyboard (ex. long pressing the home key doesn't give me the recent apps menu, it just brings me to the home screen).
I was wondering if there was a way to re-map some of the shortcut keys in the top row (bluetooth toggle, camera, internet, etc...) to my own custom actions such as launching the recent apps menu, killing a window and bringing up the notification bar. I know it's possible to do this in Linux since I just did it for a remote that I use with XBMC (the remote emulates a keyboard), I just didn't know if they feature is extended to Android or not.
Sent from my TF101 using Tapatalk 2
its possible but not easy. Some things can be remapped in the users/ect files such as ausec.(c something) but other more complex things like recent apps have to be done in framework-res.apk as far as i remember
Check out /system/usr/keylayout/asusec.kl.
I'm not sure if you can map keys to specific things like killing a window or bringing up the notification bar. However, recent apps is accessible through alt+tab (try it!) and so you may want to swap the Search and Alt keys.
EDIT: Some useful key names to look for and replace:
ALT_LEFT: left alt
ALT_RIGHT: right alt
SEARCH: search key
FORWARD_DEL: delete, as opposed to backspace. not mapped to anything by default
ESCAPE: escape key. I have this bound to the wifi key because I always accidentally hit it, and sometimes escape is useful in terminals or remote desktop

Thats right usr/keylayout not user/ect don't know what i was thinking there. I know there is a way to exchange the stupid alt-tab icon recent apps to the cards recent apps but i don't have time to do that right now. I was also going to work on getting a guide set up on how to remap everything because it seems to be a pretty common desire.
Edit:
Found it
