Are the Android development books worth buying? - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

I'd like to learn a bit more about Android development and programming, and I see all these books about it. They're huge, so I'm wondering if they're actually worth the money.

Yeah I'd be interested in knowing too, I'm interested in this discipline.

there is a class im taking to learn some information on android and i'd have to say it really does teach you a lot. they started off asking $150 so i didn't do it instead i waited awhile. a week later they offered $99 and then 2 weeks after that they offered $27 so i took them up on the offer. i mean $30 is the cost of a book & i thought it might be better to take a class over a book anyway.
there are some free ebooks you can check out, here is 1
the class im taking now is offering the course for $31 right now. $1 buys the 1st week & then 2 $15 payments. here is the link. it comes with a 30 day money back guarantee.
i would guess if you can learn better from a book i would check your library 1st before investing in a book or online course. i checked them out and seen they can be rather expensive but i was able to find 2 books on android at my local library.

I love the Head First series, and if you don't already have an understanding of Java, I would highly recommend it. Their Android Development book doesn't come out until August 5th though. They explain everything in a really easy to understand way, with lots of "meta-cognitive" exercises. The best part is, I actually thoroughly enjoyed reading it ( Java version), it's the kind of book that you want to keep reading, it's hard to put it down.

Patrick, where can the book be bought?

Amazon, and that's where I bought mine.

New gTablet Review - Shares many of my feelings

I stumbled on this review while looking for info on new ROM's. It paints a decent picture of my ugly but hardy tablet. If I ever sell it, this article would be a good link to help bump up the price . It's a half decent read and at least half-way accurate. Check it out: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/8017833/viewssonic_g_tablet_the_best_android.html?cat=15

Ugly? I wouldn't say the thing is ugly.
The article's author is Chris Matier. The OP is 'matguard'. Coincidence? Perhaps. Still, good article.
Hmmmm, who is this really?
Anyways, very good review. It kind of explains why I still kept and use it after going out and buying an Ipad 2, and I am still running it stock.
The Ipad was necessary for the very good business apps I needed and really like and use. But other than being an owner of Ipods I have never been a user of Apple. Right off the bat, the closed society and structure grates me more than I thought it would. I could never go with their desktops or laptops.
By the way, I had used two credit cards on the Itunes store and both had the numbers lifted with attempted big purchases from the thief. Now only use Itunes gift cards but WTF? So much for Apple's security. They just go into denial mode when anyone complains or points out defects.
This review pretty much states my reasons for having the tab and loving it also. I jumped on it during a woot sale. Tried to go unrooted for a bit, but the rooting was easy, the roms are fun. I enjoy my tablet greatly.
This review is spot on. Explains all reasons I like and dislike my tablet. XDA is a necessity for this tablet to shine.

looking for a partner

I co looking into making my own first app and wanting some help on it.
I hope it's okay to ask that in here btw
I have an idea for an app which would be a paid app for a niche market.
I Am able to design the interface and familiar with photo shop and the like and know how it should be put together and perhaps in time some of the basic required code but there will be a need for some math calculation based on tables created by the user...
looking on the basis of whilst I learn a 60-40 cut me .you for a guaranteed year from release and on a continuous basis if the help is ongoing for updates and the like.
I Am going to be learning as I go but Am not currently employed so I can still input a lot of time to this project.
so two questions
is anyone interested in joining?
is there already a disclosure form commonly used by partnering developers?
Doesn't Google take a share from every sale? So, the profits would be less.
ouhh at first i thought xda turned into gays online ^^

Back on topic if thats okay...
And yeah, Profits will already be cut IF we choose to advertise through google play shop or what ever the hell it's gonna be called by the time this is done, But the left overs can still be split anyway we want...
My above outlines were just in rough, I don't know if there is already an established system in use by others like me...

[Q] How much money to make an application on Android?

I'm obviously new here but have been following multiple threads for a good while. I am thinking of making an app on android just for the experience. My past history was a web-mastering class that used html and various programs such as dream weaver and photoshop.
I'm thinking of getting a few books that explain how to code and create apps. If anyone has good resources they would like to suggest, it would be much appreciated. Or perhaps I need to take a couple classes at my university before coding?
My main question is, How much does it cost to create an app yourself. I've looked it up and I see people saying numbers like 5 to 10 thousand!? That sounds ridiculous. How much is it if I make it completely myself. No hired help? Is that possible?
It is possible, but difficult. And your app will end up buggy and poor quality most likely. Your biggest problem would be support for the app especially if it's a social one.
Build something that works straight out the box

I'm thinking something along the lines of gaming. Or maybe just start with a simple app that feeds info from a site I create. Right now I just want to get the gist of it. With enough practice, would it still be poor quality by making it myself? and How much would this cost? Just the money to buy the programs I'm guessing?
I am an active android developer. I have 4 apps in the market, all of them free. I have just 1 app with advertisement, I wait to get more install for my other 3 apps.
I make $10-20 daily from my 1 app that has ads (Monthly around $300-400).
How long did it take to make a single app ? Just 2 days
How much did it cost ? $0
For programs you need Eclipse + Android SDK, which costs $0 , both open source.
Poor quality ? No way, you are not going to write 10s of thousands codes here ? Scope is small, it will be less buggy.
Its all about an app that attracts user, you dont have to build new angry birds.
Thanks for the info moribitotech. btw, nice website. I'll give your apps a visit too
Let me know how it goes,I could even test it for you.
Good luck.

My son is making his first app right now. Only spent about $30 for 2 books (android /Java) and Google is free so very low startup cost

Coding mentor needed.

Well the title says it all. I'm looking to start coding and was wondering if maybe i could get some help doing so maybe a mentor to help me. I downloaded eclipse and the SDK files i needed so i got the programs just need the teacher I won't make it a waste of your time im currently pressed for money. But once i get on my feet (a month or so) I will defiantly start paying you. I just can't afford college or id go there for it
I'll be making the leap soon too. While nothing beats one on one teaching... There are probably a small truck load of books on the topic. SOme decent google skills will help find those publications in PDF or various other formats. *shrug* That's how I'm going to go about it at least.
Depends how committed you want to be but im sure I can offer help. I am guessing you want to write apps and use java

Trust me im very committed ive been thinking about it for a long time and if i had the resources to go to college for programming i would. As for what I want to do yeah an app sums it up haha i know coding languages are all pretty similar so if i learn java i can figure C++ and others out.
I learned the basics of C++ by looking at the library and being, "hey what can I do with this stuff" and by looking at code others had written and trying to understand it / make it better / do something else.
I'm going back to de-rustify and learn much more (haven't coded anything since high-school) as well as java and just plan on using all the free on-line resources out there and doing what I did before.
I'm sure there are forums for this stuff where you can ask anyone who's reading questions. I know I used to be on one and I liked solving problems for people because I didn't have any ideas of my own but liked coming up with solutions to random crap. Which is probably a good way to learn, too - figuring out solutions to n00b problems and advancing from there.
The learning process in on-line tutorials is much more streamlined than that if that's how you prefer to learn.
Some on-line courses are also pretty cheap, as well as community colleges - and you might be able to get a grant / loan / scholarship. I would seriously see if you qualify for any financial aid if you're hurting for money and feel you'd benefit from a traditional (or on-line) classroom setting.

Ideas for a 12 year old girl?

I have a 12 year old sister and she's not really "normal"
She's a bit slow in social terms and not much of a fast learner. Her father bought her a laptop for Christmas and I was really wanting to get her every Friday and just show her some tricks and tips and help her with her homework. Would be nice to influence her in some way because I believe she really needs it.
But I'm not much of a teacher when it comes to technology. I can do just about anything technically but I can't really explain even how to stop "Do you want this to be your default browser" popups to people who aren't so tech savvy.
What should I do? I've already showed her a YouTube series to watch for "Beginning with Windows 7" or something but she still doesn't really understand. I got it to where she can text me through Gmail but I still have to go up there a few times and click on my name because she doesn't understand how to open the chat window back up.
Any ideas? She doesn't really have a good computer. I couldn't even get those cheap "iSpy" games at Walmart to run stable. I plan to show her how to use Google and Wikipedia for school but what's something fun for a 12 year old girl? Besides Facebook. I doubt her Father would allow that.

Really? I never watch the news anymore. They dramatize serious subjects and it just ticks me off.
But yeah, I figured I could spend more time with her. She really has no one to really teach her anything, no offense to our parents. But she's getting to the age where I think she should consider taking things like education more seriously. I dropped out and getting into college was hell. My older Brother graduated but is nothing but a labor slave. Her Father and our Mother has their issues as well so she really has no role model. I think I should be more involved so if she does want to do something with her life, she doesn't have to go down the hard path like I have.

The minimum age for Facebook is 13 I thought so it may not be appropriate for her. And if by not "normal" you mean she's developmentally disabled her actual age she acts might even be younger than 12 and she would be vulnerable to predators on Facebook and other social media sites so be careful there. Opening her up to the world of the internet might not be a good call if you don't have appropriate parental guards in place on the pc she's using. Predators look for kids just like your sister, the most vulnerable are the easiest prey. I would at the least only let her on-line supervised by an adult and make sure she can't get on-line by herself.
And you can only teach her as much as you know. So the best bet is to learn more yourself and then you will be a better teacher. I have grown adults at work who have used pc's for at least the last 18 years and they still ask me do the simplest of tasks for them so she may never figure it all out. Turning it on and playing a game may be all she can do, hell that's all my boss can do.

Does she have any interest in programming by some chance? Or the general concept of it (being able to tell computers what to do)?
Could try learning some Java/Android coding (for Android coding, probably want to learn some Java first). Seeing example code you written actually run might be pretty cool
What about voice recognition software like Dragon? It could be fun for her and also help her with technology?

Was actually thinking of that but I haven't really read anything about it besides commercials ? Does it "it just works" or is it complicated?
I think I could show her a few things. But I really don't know what she likes. She has like a billion pets but that doesn't really relate to teaching her how to use a computer.

I've moved this thread to the General Discussion area... If you have somewhere else in mind, simply press the report button in the OP and list where you would like it to be.
I meant to post in XDA General but since I have this app to default to my favorites and Nexus 4 General is all that's there, I reckon it bounced me back here when creating a topic.
I apologize, but yes this is intended for XDA General.
I was shopping around last night and this morning and I'm thinking of getting her a used iPod from GameStop to play games with and stuff. Really the issue is that she's growing up and everybody still babies her like her 10 year old sister. I think the laptop is the only thing she's really proud of as her room is piled with dolls and Barbie's. The iPod is only $80 and maybe a $20 iTunes gift card. I don't know what music she likes. She doesn't even know who Justin Bieber or One Direction is.
