Samsung Email App on Nexus S 4G - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am trying to port over the Galaxy S email app from the Epic to the Nexus S.
Root Explorer to system/app and doesn't show after a reboot. tried to install apk as normal and says app not installed. Any ideas why pushed to the app folder and instal won't work? Any other ideas to get it installed?
I backed up the original as email.apk.bak so it is there to redo, but didn't remove any other email items from other folders.

did you try checking the permissions?

Go to system/app, set to r/w, and check permission.
I believe all system app should have a chmod permission set 740 -
Check all Owner, Group, and Others for 'Read'
Check only Owner for 'Write'
Do not check any for 'Execute'
I'm pretty sure you don't have to install apk files. Copy email.apk to system/app, do the following above, reboot, and Galaxy S e-mail app should work.

Changed all those and still no go. Still will not show up when rebooting. I wonder what is going on in the app.

please give me the source! because this nearly not possible! you would need the whole ROM to use it and Galaxy S ROM in the DEV Section is Alpha and not booting atm!

Source for what? Who is porting the Sense Rom? It has been taken down for the moment, but who knows if it will brought back.

Install Instructions:
Download Sideload Wonder Machine (See bottom of post)
Connect phone to PC (Charge Only with debug on)
Download the .apk here.
Choose the .apk in SWM
Click "Update Existing Application"
Click Install.
Done!
Works on RCMix 5.9.7 after reboot.
i'm getting an error in SWM:

edit: nvm i just deleted htclockscreen.apk in system/app and then installed using swm (did not check upgrade existing app) and then reboot and it works great! pretty cool.

You do not. The lockscreen itself does feel a little choppy to me.
I'm getting a "Device not found" error. When I try and delete it through RE, it won't change the permissions. It says the system file is read-only. I have tried mounting the R/W, but it doesn't change when i tap it. I dunno
EDIT: Deleted the old lockscreen with TB, and installed the apk. Like above poster, it seems laggy at times. It's not as smooth as I've seen in some other videos, but definitely cool enough to use. Thanks
Is it just the simple lock screen or can you select between the different types, ie weather??

Got it to work. If you use RE, go to system/app, delete HtcLockScreen.apk (backup first), then place the new HtcLockScreen.apk and then install it from this location. Just placing the apk file or installing from other location didn't help.
Reboot and you should see the screen.

I was able to get it to work. Using root explorer make the system/app directory writable, delete the htclockscreen.apk. I rebooted, then took the downloaded new lockscreen and moved it to the system/app folder and then installed it from there. Rebooted again and had the new lockscreen.

[APP] Google Talk from 2.3.4 extracted: NOT WORKING, Help Needed!

Hi everyone,
I downloaded the extracted .apk from latest Google Android release 2.3.4
The .apk is atached below.
I have had no success in installing the app on my 2.3.3 ROM on my Samsung Galaxy S. I tried pushing it to /system/app via Root Explorer, but once you try to install package it just doesn't install by saying "Aplication not installed".
Im no dev or whatsoever,so I would encourage anyone who could help to make it work on 2.3.3, Google stated in Google Mobile Blog that Google Talk with Video Chat will be for 2.3+ devices, so it "should" work on 2.3.3.
Any help is appreciated! Share your thoughts!
Try pushing it into system/app and then change permissions. Reboot and post result.

I doubt that it will work until you upgrade the OS version to 2.3.4, it might be integrated with os changes.

That was my first thought too, but after downloading the entire update it looks like that might not be the case. There aren't a ton of changes in there, and only two updated system apps. One of which is gtalk, the other is an nfc app(for supported devices obviously). I haven't looked through anything else yet(I'm slacking off enough at work as it is), but it would appear the changes are minimal.
Edit: found a new libtalk_ini.so file in /system/lib/
That may help? Anybody have time to try?
I really wish I knew how to do this stuff. I would love to give it a try but I'm so lost! Time to do some reading! LOL
The manifest for this apk says the target and minimum sdk version is 10, which is 2.3.3....so there's a good chance that after some deodexing and supporting files this will work no problemo
That's the key. It should work on 2.3+ as stated by Google, so I think i'ts up to deodexing and adding the proper files. Sure someone experienced can do it

Generally, yes.
I got it to run, but I can't tell how to start a video chat. I pushed the apk, and odex file to the system/app directory and the jnk.so file to the system lib directory. Ran Talk and it opened fine...
HTC Hero with Cyanogen 7.0.2
Btw, its very possibly its simply running the standard install of Talk.apk instead of Talk2.apk... I'll try removing the Talk.apk...
-- Confirmed. I removed the Talk.apk from the system/app/ folder... lost my Talk icon in the launcher. Rebooting; maybe it will showup after reboot.
-- Ok, now I'm not completely convinced that you can get rid of Talk.apk when you push Talk2.apk. They both may have to be there.

I can't seem to get my system to mount R/W with ES File Explorer, so I can't edit the build.prop.
Furthermore, I have to manually change the "home" settings in ES to the /system folder in order to even navigate to it, then I can't even see the file even though all files are supposed to be shown (through settings) so I have to search for it.
Any ideas on what I might be doing wrong?
EDIT: Noticed that when it is mounted as R/W, build.prop is not listed at all, but it is when it isn't mounted as R/W.

big noob here! first, i take no credit for making this app i just figured out how to make it work with our phones.

-first make a backup of the stock messaging app. (i just renamed it and added ".bak" after .apk
-use root explorer and push the Message+CRC_1.apk to system/app
-change permissions to rw-r-r
-change ownership to root:root
-reboot!
-after reboot go into apps manager and clear data. thats it!

what exactly is going on with it? is it force closing? not able to send anything? i know when i didnt clear the data it would just keep force closing on me.
i just attached another one of the files. try renaming this one to Message+CRC_1 and following the directions again. maybe a cache wipe?
the file in the first post was pulled straight from my system/apps folder and is working great on my side. maybe this one will work for you.
EDIT: the name of the apk implies that you are replacing the stock sense messaging app. so if the name of your messaging app differs, try renaming the file to that of your stock messaging app.
So it worked for you? Awesome!
Running on stock 1.85 rooted. Working splendidly.

Any word if this works with Samsung Galaxy S III? I have tried several apps, and while I can get all of them to work initially, they all break after just a few txts. Also, how do you clear data in apps manager? 4.0.4 doesn't seem to have that option, on my Verizon variant anyway.

If you are using a ROM that is ODEX'd you need to rename the messaging odex file as well if delete it. Most sense ROMs right now are so double check. I've used this on every ROM I've flashed and it works flawlessly.
