Do you guys with a GSM Nexus S or maybe the CDMA version experience some sort of wifi throttling?
It's like my wifi gets throttled and apps like XDA, Twitter, Facebook and even the market timeout. Websites also load super slow!
I know it's not my wifi or internet because I get 40Mbps down and 20Mbps up so there's no way its my internet. So I don't know what's up! And its really frustrating me!
So you guys know what might be going on? Maybe I need a radio update? I did install the Trinity kernel but it doesn't seem to have helped except maybe in the battery department.
And I also just got this phone 2 days ago.

Update your radio?
HTC phones have radios that control... well the radios of the phone so I don't know if the Nexus is the same.

What are you talking about? control what?
WiFi is completely fine. I know some NS4G users are having problems with it but it looks like you're using the GSM variant of Nexus S.
The radio is like a driver that controls wifi, network, and Bluetooth radios....
I read about the data drops on the CDMA Nexus. And yes I have the GSM variant

I know what a radio is. What I'm telling you to do is to update your radio if it isn't the latest (or use another radio than what you're using currently).
Oh!
You had said update your radio with a question mark haha...
Okay, the latest radio?

Recently i bought the Inspire 4G from USA through Ebay
and found that the only network i can use to be connected to the internet is GPRS
I started wondering if this phone support the UK network (HSPA)
i'm currently using Three (UK)' 3G network, my HTC Legend works fine with HSPA
Does Inspire 4G support HSPA?? or only HSPA+??
You have to play around with the apn there is a whole thread about it

u mean that's the problem with my APN settings?
So how can i find the correct settings then??
The DHD and Inspire 4G are one in the same with a few minor differences. If you've s-off and downgraded, you can directly flash the new stock Desire HD Gingerbread ROM without all the bloatware from here. You will have to root using Gingerbreak, then install the tinny audio fix from here. Works like a champ. Of course, there's all the DHD GB ROM's based on that same kernel which can be flashed using CWM. Lot's of options here...none include the stock AT&T ROM.
so you are saying that the problem can be fixed by flashing a new DHD rom??but not the own problem of inspire 4G?
Yup...give it a whirl. AT&T ROM's are preloaded with their own APN and do not allow you to use the built-in network configuration utility at first boot. Just downgrade and s-off first. It used to be that the original shipping DHD ROM's would cause the I4G to lose audio. Now it's just a bit tinny which some do not like.
i tried this before, it doesn't work, there is still only GPRS network
i even flashed the latest radio just now, but it just doesn't show the "H" icon at the top!!!!
please brothers, i am also facing the same problem in middle east using inspire 4g with vodafone sim card. mine is rooted inspire 4g and i couldn'd get the 3g connection.
Hmmm...unless the radio hardware is different, and I don't think it is, I don't know what the situation is. You flashed the whole ROM right?

This thread has so much wrong info in it.
The Inspire 4G will NEVER work with European UMTS(3G) bands. Only EDGE. The reason is frequency. The USA uses 850/1900 for UMTS. The EU uses 900/2100. There is no way to change this.

No you wont ever get 3g with the inspire in Europe. It only has American 3g bands.
I don't know why this thread got so many replies with nobody saying this, but it lacks the hardware for your country. Sorry.
OK...the European ROM flashes to the Inspire, radio and all, and HSPA works in the US without a hiccup. How does the DHD radio firmware work here if the hardware is different? I'm assuming that the same firmware works on both phones but the hardware to receive the 900/2100 mhz band is missing. Oh well, learn something new every day.
FWIW, you may try changing your band on the phone by using engineering mode *#*#4636#*#* and seeing if you can play around with network preferences. Other than that, I think the guys above must be right.

Different radios work differently for each person. You just have to try a couple and see how they work for you.

Yes the radio image is flashed thru hboot.
The RIL can be flashed thru cWm.
I have a similar problem. I am on CM7 and have the radio from AT&T's update and my connection to the mobile network is so inconsistent. I have been in the same place as my wife and her iphone 4 has a great connection and mine won't even connect to the mobile network. I quite often have bars that are grey as opposed to colored, meaning I have a connection for calls but not data. A
Any solutions?

Different versions of CM7 are using different RIL versions. Run these commands from a terminal window and tell us your RIL version:
su
getprop "gsm.version.ril-impl"
I've noticed that there are 2 rils for the latest ota radio. Who is using which one and how is it working for you.

I'm using 160HM. Network data performance so far has been outstanding, with a best ever speed test...I hesitate to say this, but 10.1 down /2.0 up...those are not typos . I am wondering if it has more to do with the new APN settings (hipri), and speculating my market takes advantage of them.
What are the typical speeds that most of you get on ATT with your Nexus S? I ask because Im using a Galaxy Nexus and I know it has a better radio than the S. I get speeds of anywhere from 1.5-3mb down. My niece in the same area is getting around 500k. I heard that I could flash the radio on the Nexus S to the KB3 and it would dramatically increase her speeds. (Apparently there is a cap on the current stock radio??)
I plan on manually updating her device to JB and i figured that while im at it, just flash that radio instead of the stock one. Would this make sense to do or does the stock radio on JB fix the issues that most have with data speeds on att and this device?
Is there a better option I should try for her? A different radio that is better? I would like to keep her as stock as possible as far as ROM goes but I dont have a problem trying radios if it would help the problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

It's funny, I installed KB3 radio and it's not showing up as HSDPA like it did with 2.3.7. I haven't checked the speeds, Usually the kb3 radio is much faster.

as far as i know , it seems all these radios depends on the area and your operator.
not always newer radios is better than older ones. you better test them all by yourself unless you find someone who lives in the same area and with same phone and even who has tested them all...

always upgrade, the radio interface layer needs to match the baseband files.

it works similar to how windows uses drivers to communicate with the hardware, it is basically the same way linux is able to allow the android operating system to communicate with the hardware layer of your network radio, incompatible RIL/baseband can cause dropped calls etc, if it errors out.

You know guys, I thought the same until I realized that cm7 and all ROMs based on it had mismatched ril when installed... sometimes I forgot to use getril for days and there were no noticeable issues.
IMHO I guess, but I have found a lot of such info on xda is belief based (GPS fixes are another example). Anyways whatever floats a boat I guess.

hello...
what's going on everyone... first off just want to thank everyone for their hard work on these forums. thought the whole rooting/modding thing seemed harder than it looked, but when i finally got down and dirty, it reminded me of when i modded my psp a few years back!
anyway, just reading this thread and decided to dl getRIL, and it does say my RIL/baseband don't match. i'm running the g2x with cm7/mazout's 2.6.32.60 GB kernel and the "new baseband fix" after having the popping/"hash hash" sound (can't recall where the thread is off the top of my head...). getRIL says i'm running v20c, i was under the impression that this setup was "v21y-ish"? i've had this setup for a few days now, and the only issues i've had were random reboots/shutdowns (85% positive it's a battery issue... it looks like it's swelling!). i switched from cm10.1 JB (yesss! JB on my g2x...waitaminit... can't call or text?!?!?! aarrgggh!) to EB ICS 4.0.4 for about a week to my current setup (as i like having HWA and a video camera.) but with my current setup, no data/radio issues so far...
basically the point is: should i mess with my baseband or leave it as is? again, thanks!!!
I would use getril to adjust your ril to the baseband just as i did.

It's the same as updating drivers on your computer, you either want to, or you dont. But if you start having issues with connectivity, it is advised that you update the RIL first.
Mine didn't seem like it had any issues either but I did it anyway in the hopes that I could get better battery life, call quality, etc. Haven't really noticed any improvements yet lol.....
So I did it... so far no issues n everything sounds fine as far as radio/call quality goes...

No real issues, just didn't want any issues in the future with RIL/baseband nit matching... plus I'm kinda OCD when I mod my gadgets. That's why I went back to GB from the EB ICS rom I was running, I had to have video camera n HWA functioning

question: why are phones sold with unmatched modem/RIL?
Neither of mine were?
Sent from my SGH-I317 using Tapatalk 4
It is almost always best to use the RIL that matches the software version it is meant to work with. The RIL is responsible for interpreting commands between the Android kernel and the hardware radio/modem that enable the phone to work as a cell phone. One of the reasons that the G2X won't work as a cell phone with ICS is the incompatibility of the GB RIL with ICS and no G2X specific RIL for ICS is available.
