Rooted and unlocked my Galaxy S 4G, but now it no longer is rooted..? - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

Hi I rooted and unlocked my Galaxy S 4G yesterday. Today I thought I'd try free up some space to get rid of some bloatware. But now my phone is no longer rooted. I noticed superuser was no longer installed. I re-installed that. I tried to install busybox as well, and it also says that I am not rooted. Titanium Backup also says I am not rooted, and root checker confirms I am no longer rooted as well. So decided to install superuser again, but it did no good. Anyone know how my phone could just unroot itself?

No idea why it would, but you could just try either using cwm or odin to install a prerooted rom on your phone.

when you unlocked your phone you probably unrooted it normally you would unlock and then root if I'm not mistaken could be wrong though

Thread moved to proper forum.

did you flash the Bali kernel over KD1? I did that, and it unrooted. It happened to me twice...then on the 3rd try, root stuck, the only thing I did different was when I flashed Bali, I only did the lag fix on the /data, not /system...but eventually I did/system as well, and still kept root.

I had to root the phone first before I could unlock it. Used 010 Hex Editor to get the unlock code.
Used this procedure.

just ran superoneclick. All rooted again. Hope this one sticks.

[Q] HELP!!! I cannot re-root my Droid Pro

I had rooted via Z4root, and everything was great.
Then I get the update from Verizon, and it unroots the phone when installing the update.
So now it is unrooted, everything works, but I am unable to root it again. It also has superuser still installed. I would like to know how to get the superuser app removed, maybe then Z4root would work again?
I would be willing to try and do a sbf wipe as well, but I could not find anything that works, or instructions to help an idiot like myself get it done.
I have already tried wiping it back to factory, but the superuser is still there.
PLEASE HELP!! I want my rooted phone back!

My guess would be that VZW plugged the exploit z4root was using to gain access. May be necessary to hold off until a z4root update finds a new one, or flash back to before your VZW update.
Good luck!

It's a Nexus, you can always root.
So I can root with the current root method with no problems?
Not to hijack your thread, but I didn't want to make an entirely new one and it's kind of a related question.
So I've never rooted my NS before and I'm on 2.3.4. Is there any way I can root without having to wipe my phone, or will I just have to bite the bullet and do it.
I've been perfectly fine without root up until now, but the new colors really bug me and would like to fix them.
Usually when you root data usually gets lost what are you trying save?. The only thing that u are going to be able to save are your contacts.

Not sure what the "current root method" is, but it's the same process as usual: flash ClockworkMod Recovery, mount /system, apply the su zip, done.
(with the usual caveats about doing things properly so the recovery patcher doesn't trigger and remove CWM just after you flashed it)
ok well this is my scenerio..
i just bought my nexus s yesterday.... i got the OTA 2.3.4 and updated it..
i just want to know the EASIEST process to root my nexus s as i am not adb literate. Every phone that i had has been rooted previously so i never had to root a phone but i am getting all these threads to root the nexus s and damn it has to do with adb which i have no clue how to use.. but once im rooted i can change rom change themes etc.. its just the rooting process.. well any methods are welcome..
p.s sorry to jack your thread man
the first time I used adb was yesterday to unlock my nexus s and it really wasnt too bad so you should be good
Will this guide work with 2.3.4 without wipe everything? (i havent unlocked bootloader) h**p://download-apk.blogspot.com/2011/05/tutorial-rooting-unlock-bootloader-for.html ? If it's not, is there any way to root my nexus 2.3.4 with stock rom without wipe? I would appreciate any answers. Thank you.

Rooting does not require wiping IF your bootloader is unlocked. An open lock is shown below the Google tag when booting if you're unlocked.
Unlocking bootloader will always wipe for security reasons.
Make sure to sync contacts before doing anything. Then start here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=895545
After that, flash a custom roms by the developers. They already comes with root and updated kernels. Hope this helps
Its almost 12 at nite, off to bed i go.

VRLG7 Update breaks root

I just applied the OTA update (VRLG7) and it seems to have broken root. When running the superuser.apk and attempting to update the binary, I get the following...
"Gaining root access... fail!"
Using the terminal app shows that /system/xbin/su has the "-rwxr-xr-x" permissions, but when I try to execute it, I get a "Permission Denied", but the usual popup that the superuser.apk app shows for granting superuser permissions. I checked the superuser.apk, and the terminal and superuser apps are allowed to have root.
Has anybody run across this? Do I have to re-root it? From what I can remember, rooting it just puts the superuser.apk and su binary in the proper locations....but if they already exist, how would re-rooting it fix it?
Thanks!
Yeah there's a few other threads on this and people were able to re-root and unlock.

just run the rootdebugfs program and reroot...no biggie!
Thanks for the responses. I left my usb cable at home today, so I will have to wait. I did the update at work, and I'm just kind of stuck for the time being.
Hopefully the reroot will work out for me and life will be good again!!
Thanks!
I am running the ( VRLG7 ) modem since I downloaded it 3 days ago and have not lost root or unlock, Maybe you missed it but one of the #1 rules is to not except OTA updates from Verizon because they will break your root and your unlock and possible brick your phone

you wont lose root by flashing a modem...he flashed the entire g7 rom update. this breaks root, no big deal, just need to reroot and unlock. this latest g7 ota update is safe.

I stuck to the #1 rule, but everybody here and everwhere said it was safe and you can still root and unlock the bootloader. I figured that since everybody said it was safe, why not.
Like others said, I re-rooted it and it was fine. Last time, I used odin, but this time, used casual. It worked well, but after the root, I went into superuser and did an 'update'. The phone rebooted into the 'lock' screen for a minute, rebooted, and things came up fine. Strange, but it worked. Hopefully, it's not a sign.

My phone restarted to clockwork and asked me if I wanted to install it. I took a chance and said yes and after holding my breath, clockwork asked me it looks like root might have been lost.. Fix? I said sure and sure enough after rebooting I had the latest update and I was still rooted. It did say update failed but I still have the latest firmware and there is no newest update.

HELP! 9.30.1 OTA (LOST ROOT) Is There a Different way to Gain Root Back?

Ok so heres my first question?........... Is there any possible way of gaining root access through linux for my android ? ....Like running certain commands to do so......I know u have to change permissions and make changes to the android file system......And was wondering since linux uses root in terminals and so on and so forth would it work to access root in linux and maybe use a file manager to open your android system files in linux to make these changes so u may root. .. Instead of waiting for a DEV to create a method or script that will work ... Isnt there a way we can gain this back without waiting for an actual script to release . I rely on my root for a vast majority of my apps and i am lost without it . I know it may be more complex and diffucult for some people but to gain root access back this way ... But it would be great.
I have a working linux set up on my comp already with working adb /sdk installed ..... If anybody can help me with rooting my phone it would be very much appreciated. Im not new to this at all im very familiar with linux and how to use it. i basically need help with the rooting process and what to do when it comes to that.
I do not have an unlocked bootloader if that makes any difference.
Took 9.30.1 OTA and lost root.
As far as i know there is no script/method to root for the new OTA 9.30.1 update.
Tryed rooting already with Linux but my file system wont allow anything to be written to it.. Its Read Only File System. I think it has to be Read/Write
I really hope there is a root script/method released soon if this way isnt possible
Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you

I doubt there will be another exploit. This phone is a year old now and most devs are focusing on custom ROMs.

Mostly likely none. Because at this point 95% of people know to protect root before taking an ota. Or just don't take it.

My phone is the not-unlockable one and locked.
I happend to click yes when this update question came. After realizing what was happening, I set my phone to flight mode, and the update downloading is now paused. Is there anyway to cancel this downloading/update process?
I have installed safestrape and backup my stock ROM before this. The worst is that I restore the backup and the update question will be prompted again, right?
Or is there other way to stop the update downloading in progress?
Another question, if root is lost through the OTA update, can I restore the backup through Safestrape and get root again? Or is everything gone?

Once root is lost after the ota has been fully applied, the backup will do you no good as there is a new kernel applied.
As for it being paused, I believe you should be okay. Just because you started the download doesn't mean it's been applied. Freeze the updater apk and reboot. I believe that will cancel the download and with the frozen updater, you won't get bothered again.
You could apply the update if you save root with voodoo root keep but if you ever have to reimage your phone, you will lose root permanently. I'd just hold off and wait and see if an exploit is ever found.

Anyone working on a root exploit for 9.30.1
So is anyone working on an exploit to root this update?? I just don't want to have to keep SBF'ing my Razr Maxx HD back to older versions and reconfiguring all my stuff. For what ever reason, I could not get OTA's. I was rooted(motochopper) and used superuser and voodoo. Protected my root, temp unrooted, downloaded the update, but then it would fail on install. I even tried flashing back to the stock recovery and it failed. So just to see what the 9.30 did, I installed it through Droid Razr HD Utility 1.34...of course I lost root, can't put a custom recovery on it, but my phone seems to run pretty good for a stock rom. So, I'm just wondering.

I had root with the 9.30.1 update. I backed up root with OTA RootKeeper but my phone was acting up so i factory reset it and all went to hell...!!! I protected everything and backed up hoping that would do the trick but unfortunately it didnt save the root like it should have now i sit I regret ever resetting it thats for sure. It was risky on my part playing with the reset option knowing there was no exploit out yet and i payed the price

im assuming your bootloader is unlocked?
if so, search for a flash-able zip of SU. you can root any build, problem solved.
I know our RAZR HD's are old, but there's nothing better out there. At this point, I'm willing to pay cash money for anyone able to find a new root exploit for this dumb 9.30 update. I took all the precautionary steps and have an unlocked phone, yet for some reason as soon as the update applied I lost root. It happened during the last ota and I got lucky that the warranty covered me. Not gonna happen now with a unlocked booty. So once again, please find a root exploit and I'll pay you. I dont want to get rid of my razr. Thanks yall

I've tried every su time there is in here and other sites. They fail every time. I've tried recovery through twrp and cwm and they both fail. As a matter of fact since I took the update neither one of those will work now either. I'll keep trying new stuff until I succeed or brick this phone. All other devices that are currently available can't hold a flame to the RAZR.

I get the "warning, boot loader unlocked" message every time I power up. Used *#*#4636#*#* and checked that device shows root. I took all the precautionary steps before installing the ota, and I was having problems that both 9.20 and 9.30 fixed. Was running eclipse as a ROM before all this went screwy lewy
tried using motochopper (no winning)
All boxers are checked, however when I get the true ending to check my SU, it gives me some bogus message about needing to update SU, however it says I have an HTC device, I'm very confused on this, and don't understand what it is even referring too.
Anyone know what I'm reading about here?

[Q] Stuck on 4.3

Ok so I never messed around with rooting until my phone got the 4.3 update the other night. I decided I hated the update so much that I did the saferoot method, and I'm now rooted.
Only after I did that did I discover that my bootloader is perma-locked and I can't try to unroot or rollback the android version or I'll hardbrick. I can't do roms. Essentially I can't fix what I rooted in order to fix, and trying to enter recovery mode and odin mode lights me up with a verizon warning. So:
1. Just what can I do SAFELY now that I'm rooted? I've already used titanium to uninstall the verizon apps, but I don't know what I'm doing beyond that to remove bloatware/make this thing faster.
2. Will there be a time in the future when I'll be able to totally unlock my phone and escape Verizon's tyranny even though I took the 4.3 OTA? I want to make it look like stock nexus android.
Thanks for any and all help!
1. That's about it. Maybe use Xposed and the Greenify module to hibernate apps that typically drain your battery. Can't do much more besides remove apps on TW 4.3.
2. Possibly or possibly never. Nobody knows if the Knox Bootloader and extra security checks put forth by Verizon will be overcome.

I use Greenify to hibernate apps I sometimes use and titanium backup to freeze apps I never use. I don't uninstall them just in case. It's running great for me, much better than 4.1.2
I know you can't downgrade from 4.3, but you can't unroot either?

Same situation...I flashed Stock_rooted_4.3 after taking the OTA and my phone said unauthorized software detected, take to Verizon. Luckily I found the original image and it flashed back to totally stock 4.3 build ML1.
Basic root would be fine for now so would you please link me to the method you used if you are also on ML1?
